A few months ago, I got married. The day before our wedding, our cake baker called us to inform us that she had a house fire (everyone was fine), however, since she operated her business out of her home, she could not make our cake for our wedding. So, we needed to figure out how and where to get good quality cake for 75 people on very short notice. Our first thought was Metropol as we had been there many times before and loved their baked goods. Unsure of whether this was a possibility, we went in and told the counter person our story. She was incredibly understanding and helpful to our situation and said that they could definitely make us some sheet cakes for our wedding. At this point, we did not care much what they looked like, we just wanted to offer a sweet treat at our wedding. So she helped us out with picking our flavors and calmed our semi-panicked moods. What they gave us was much more than we expected, providing beautiful and classy decorative frosting on the sheet cakes and everyone was raving about their chocolate and lemon flavors. I have friends and family that travel two hours out of their way simply to get a seeded baguette. Best thing ever. Gotta try it. Their deserts and other breads are incredible as well. I am at a loss for words I love this place so much. I always get a cream puff, which takes at least three people to eat (though I do my best to eat it on my own). Occasionally, one finds a place that exceeds one's expectations. Metropol blew right past them and landed in sweet heaven. Seriously. this place is amazing. Modestly tucked into a shopping area, this bakery offers drinks, pastries, cakes, breads, mousses, and savory breakfast/lunch items. My father and I got their lemon mousse and their chocolate cheesecake, both of which were stunningly good. The mousse was light and bursting with lemon flavor, while the cheesecake was smooth and decadent. I wish I could have tried every single item there!! The ambiance was charming and had cool art on the wall. First the cakes, etc are first rate! Alas the service doesn't measure up late in the day and on week ends. The popularity of Metropol often puts the staff in overwhelm trying to keep up. Last weekend I went in and after waiting in line for about 10 minutes I got my raspberry/chocolate cake and coffee...first rate. Alas I had to use a paper cup for the coffee and a plastic fork for the cake. This same symptom of understaffing has happened before and appears to me to be chronic. I am posting this with the hope management will address the issues presented and fix them. In the interim I suggest taking the excellent cakes home with you. read more

I have been here multiple times and have finally learned my lesson. Their customer service is terrible. Today was the last straw. They had a 50% off section with two cakes with no labels or information. No problem, I asked at the counter, the nice looking dark-haired woman I spoke to was interrupted by a silver/dyed hair woman who was nowhere near us and she said "there's only x and y cakes and everything else is $4.25." No smile or any friendliness. Okay. I asked to verify they weren't Gluten-free, in case it was my lucky day. The answer is no, again no problem. Then I scanned the menu and found "fresh, organic orange juice, 8 ounce and 12 ounce". I ordered an orange juice. The dark-haired girl was trying to figure out what to do because there are no 8 ounce cups. A plastic 12 ounce was going to be used. I said "do you have a glass?" The silver haired girl said if I only wanted to pay for 8 ounces they could just put less in the cup. (Duh, and really? ) My picture of sitting at one of the many available tables with a lovely glass of orange juice was starting to fade. She held up a paper cup. I hesitated as it's a throwaway item also. I said perhaps a mug? She said that I didn't "have to buy an orange juice if I didn't want to". (Really?!!!) I told her I could handle thinking of that concept myself. There was a set of mugs right in front of all of us and she picked one of those up. Great. I saw a basket of oranges and was looking forward to seeing the next fun part. Instead, the girl disappeared in back. As that was happening I asked " is this going to be from concentrate?" Since I got something akin to an eye roll I pointed to the sign that said "fresh organic". She pulled out the Tropicana bottle and said "it says fresh". I said give me my money pack, and you can try being friendly to customers instead of driving them away. Holy mackerel!!!!! Horrible!!! read more

When someone told me the Metropol Bakery has desserts that are comparable to Sweet Life's both in price and quality, I assumed they were as nutty as the turtle cake. After my first visit my allegiance is officially split between the two. There may not be as many desserts to choose from but there is enough that you must flip a coin because they all are tantalizing. I had an Eiffel Tower chocolate croissant (they sell them at Kiva as well and along with other Metropol pastries). The croissant was about 3.5 stars. The coffee was 3.5 stars, good enough for an Oregonian but not life changing. The item that boosts the score to 5 stars was the magical and mystifying "September 7th Cake"! It has a decadent chocolate ganache exterior and fluffy whipped cream interior with moist chocolate cake keeping the peace between the two. Yes, you read that correct, whipped cream in the center. Metropol is the quickly underrated bakery in town, in my estimation. Along with Hideaway, it's the best place to get bread. My dad, a seasoned traveler, declares that he sourdough is the best he's had in his 74 years. I much prefer their cakes to Sweet Life's - I find them lighter, not as cloyingly sweet, and generally more interesting. The cream puffs are giant and wonderful. Their pastries are great, and the bear claw is a standout. Breakfast are good and simple. Not a ton of options, but eggs on croissants or a slice of quiche are satisfying. read more

I've worked in the service industry for years and I NEVER complain about human error on my food orders but this is the second time I've ordered food from Metropol only to have my order made incorrectly or be missing a crucial ingredient--which wouldn't be the end of the world but when I've asked (politely) for a remake or a refund the staff has been borderline abusive. Repeated calls requesting a manager have been ignored. Honestly for what this place charges for sandwiches one would hope that they could put it on the correct bread or include the cranberry sauce as advertised, etc.I'm gonna stop trying to give them extra chances do not recommend read more

I would give this place no stars if I could. I was just in and the lady was absolutely the rudest person I have ever spoke to. I was planning on buying four slices of cake two were going to be the same kind and two different. She wanted to try and put everything into one box, but I am allergic to what one of them includes on it so I asked her for another and she informed me I would need to pay for another box. If I'm paying 5.50 per slice and you can't give me a separate box there's a problem. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE. I have been going here for over ten years and will never be back. The first thing you notice walking into metropol is the changing artwork on the wall, followed by the case of desserts. Best place to get fresh bread in south Eugene and worth the drive if you live elsewhere. I live for their fig/walnut loaf and the wheat sourdough. I tend to buy the wheat sourdough after 4pm when you can get day old for half off. Fresh is always worth the price though. My favorite cake is the lemon chiffon, but I'm also a sucker for all of their pies and the macaroni and cheese. They also have daily soup specials which are always a treat, and good loose leaf tea. It is rare to go in after 5pm and not see a patron with some bread and a pot of tea as they read one of the bakery's complimentary papers. read more

I remember when Metropol was in two locations, serving up their fine baked goods! For many years they had a long term staff that was wonderful! I came to visit from out of town today and I was so disappointed in the customer service! The two girls working were messing up several orders in a row. Not listening to what the customers said, and just came across as untrained. A customer in front of me mentioned to one of them that they got his order wrong and they looked at him like he was a bother!? They weren't even very busy! :( read more

I can't comment on the food, as I ended up leaving empty handed. I have been on a sourdough kick, and really wanted to try this place after doing some research on local bakeries and reading about their sourdough on the company's website. I'm not out willamette st very often and made a special trip across town on my day off to buy some. There was a pretty long line, but I figured it would go quickly. I was thinking people were there to purchase baked goods, which is a quick transaction. But it seems like everyone was buying coffee. Unfortunately, there was only one person taking orders and making espresso drinks, even though there were several other people working there. After waiting more than fifteen minutes in a very cramped line (there wasn't any space for people who had received their orders to exit between the people waiting in line and the tables where people were eating their food) and still having 3-4 people ahead of me I decided not to wait another 10-15 minutes and just left. read more

It doesn't surprise me that at least half of the reviews mention the downright substandard customer service. Maybe management hasn't cared enough to improve that significant problem in their small, local business--but they'd better start caring soon. Today, I intended to order sandwiches and drinks, and while doing so, I asked the young woman if she could please put her mask on. It was sort of stuck down on her chin, entirely ineffective. She flat out said no. She said, "I can't breathe with it on." My daughter pointed out that she's serving food, waiting on many customers, etc., and the server said she didn't care and refused again to put it on. One of us said that maybe it would be a good idea for us to find food where the food workers respect STATE LAW and the woman nearly pushed us out of the cafe, waving her hands at us to leave. I'm not a pastry chef, but I am well versed in baking however even if I try to fool my girlfriend that i am not {she bakes me pie) I think though and probably due to to some cosmic union contract that states that everybody named Jevon must like croissants and dip them in their coffee like donuts and call that breakfast. While I've lived in Eugene for a number of years i had the misfortune of having to have inferior mornings due to my lack of French quality croissants, so flaky, so buttery a light and crispy golden lining. Then I found the Metropol and I gotta tell ya, I'd love to see them compete with some Parisian bakeries they got it perfect and they're consistent good job you guys!!! read more

I took my child here after school and was immediately impressed by the Christmas tree decorated in pretty gingerbread cookies. We ordered a hot chocolate, mocha and a butter croissant alongside a snowman sugar cookie that was expertly iced. The barista added lovely feathered swirls on our drinks, which were just sweet enough, and the croissant was the perfect combination of flaky, salty and tender. Metropol is the European style bakery/patisserie cafe where you can have coffee with friends, chat, grab an inexpensive sandwich, and pick up your daily bread. Their freshly baked breads draw from various European traditions, especially French and Italian style breads as well as croissants. If you stay for lunch you can get your sandwich made on any of these breads, your choice. You also get a piece of bread of your choice with a cup of soup. Metropol also functions as a patisserie serving pastries, scones, fruit and pudding tarts, mousses, pies, and cakes. Seeing their display case always brings a smile to my face, not only because their sweet treats are mouthwateringly delicious, but also because it reminds me of my childhood in The Netherlands. Growing up, I always looked forward to the morning 'coffee and cake' get-togethers that are the Dutch equivalent of going out to Starbucks together. Whoever was hosting would go to the bakery and get a box with a variety of pastries, slices of cake, etc so to bring home. Then when your friends came over, everyone would get to pick a piece (I inevitably fought for the 'tompouce', sort of like what you call a Napoleon in America, but with yellow custard inside, and PINK icing on top). On the days when my mother was at work but we were home from school, our housekeeper would occasionally take us to the bakery and let us pick a treat to take home. I've missed those days, but now I have Matropol bakery, and even though my mother lives far away, I now go to Metropol with my mother-in-law to split a sandwich and a treat, and chat with our fellow bakery lovers. What have I eaten here so far? I've tried two soups, which come in a huge mug even if you order just "a cup". The carrot soup wasn't great, too thick and starchy. The mushroom and sherry soup was fabulous though, I would definitely buy that again. I've also had their croissants and a chicken salad sandwich. The chicken salad has a good ratio of apple to chicken, and comes on your choice of any of their delicious breads. Could use more salt/pepper though, it was kind of bland. I've also had their chocolate creme parisienne tart which comes in a little pieshell that is half dipped in chocolate (!). Heavenly! The chocolate mousse is great too (my mother in law says it's the best she's ever had). The number one reason we've been coming here though is the conversation. I know Metropol is just a bakery and can't single handedly revive the European ltierary cafes of the 19th and early 20th century, but Metropol certainly attracts a fascinating crowd. We've met several people here, like UofO professors, with whom we've had extensive discussions about politics, education, the media, law, and American history. Something about the table setup makes it so easy to meet people here and engage in conversations. I love it! We've ended up sitting here for three hours at a time talking with complete strangers. So whether you're just looking for a great bakery or a European style cafe, Metropol's "got your back". PS: Apologies to other customers for us being so loud in our debates haha. read more

When other yelpers use words like "amazing" or "great", than I have to wonder if I'm being too harsh. I don't think I am because I've had these forgetful baked items thousands of time in the past. Metropol has got a good thing going. Everything I've tried here is delicious: the breads, pastries, cakes and other desserts, soups, salads, and sandwiches, hot and cold drinks, you name it. These folks clearly take pride in their work. The service is usually pretty friendly, considering the volume of customers they serve from a single cash register. Be prepared to stand in a long line at certain times of the day and especially on the weekends. Standing in line in a place like this isn't so bad, though. First of all, the arched ceiling and wheat-colored walls make you feel like you're inside a loaf of bread. It's very cozy. And, in addition to getting to look at the mouth-watering breads and confectionery, there is also a gallery of paintings and photographs by local artists. My husband and I visited Metropol Bakery for the first time today, and were very pleased with our experience. While the sandwiches took some time (10 plus minutes) to prepare, they were worth the wait. My husband had the Smoked Turkey Breast on "Birdseed Multi-grain" , and I had the Parisian Chicken Salad on Eugene Sourdough. Fresh ingredients, and so flavorful! The staff was friendly and helpful. I bought a loaf of Whole Wheat Walnut to bring home. Also delicious. So glad we stopped by today! read more

Each celebration I'd insist on bringing the cake so that I could indulge again. Great work Metropolers. This is the best seeded baguette I have ever had. Get there before 9am and you can likely get a hot one. The fruit danishes are amazing--cherry and cream cheese is a personal favorite. The carrot cake is ALWAYS moist and the best I've ever had. My husband cannot get enough of the Chocolate Amaretto Mousse cake. The owner has been doing this for like 35 years. I'd say she knows what she's doing. They make homemade soups during the colder months and there is not a single one I didn't like. What am I forgetting? Amazing and huge sandwiches for lunch. Delicious organic espresso drinks. I love every thing they bake. Their breads are even great! Their sandwiches are excellent. Even their coffee tastes good. I prefer it to Sweet Life... yes, you read it right! Without turning this into a review of Sweet Life I will tell you why. Sweet Life has become too big, and too much. Most of their desserts feel like they lack the flavor and time that Metropol seems to have in abundance. Metropol does not have as big as selection but every single dessert in that cooler tastes wonderful! I also prefer the vibe of Metropol. The staff is pleasant. They don't act like their too hip, or too busy, to take my order. Oh and the pieces of cake and pie are much bigger. I only wish they stayed open longer... but then again maybe I don't or I would be there too often. read more

ugh. this place used to have the best baguette in town. then about 5 years ago they switched to some sort of automated system that measures the dough for each loaf and it all went to hell. the sweets are still killer but bread is what's hard to come by in eugene. sad story. i still miss the good ol' days of the chewy, crunchy, seeded baguette. read more
