The cake is a very light cake with a mild chocolate flavor and not too rich. The frosting is very light and not over sweet, like a buttercream frosting maybe? Service: The service was genuinely warm and welcoming. The lady behind the counter was incredibly friendly and patient with us. We were torn between the marionberry and the cherry pies--the marionberry was our first choice, but the cherry looked so tempting! She let us customize our order with 1/3 of a marionberry pie and 1/2 of a cherry pie, which was so kind and accommodating. When we asked if the cherry pie was made with sour cherries, she wasn't sure, but mentioned her husband really loved it. What sold us was the gorgeous, golden, crumb-topped crust that looked absolutely irresistible. The Pies, the honest scoop: Cherry Pie: Yes, it's made with sour cherries. Unfortunately, the crust that looked crumbly and sweet was actually very thick--about 3 times thicker than the base crust. Most of my bites were overwhelmingly doughy, with only a bit of cherry filling here and there. It wasn't quite what we expected. Marionberry Pie: Delicious. The flavor was vibrant, the crust was just right, and it had the perfect balance of tart and sweet. We all agreed that the marionberry was the clear winner. Verdict: If we could do it again, we'd stick with our gut and go all-in on the marionberry pie. Still, we appreciated the excellent service and willingness to accommodate our indecision. I've been a Metropol fan for years. Love their bread and in general, the cakes are also very good. However, I recently stopped by for a slice of chocolate buttermilk cake. I came to Metropol recently for a particular item - their Birdseed Multigrain bread. I haven't actually had this before, but was visiting a friend later that day who loves it (and lives outside of Eugene) so, I wanted to bring her a loaf. Unfortunately, they didn't have any out that morning. I was surprised since I was there only about an hour after they opened. One of the workers informed me that they were training a new baker, and believe they just ran out of time to make it that day. Bummer! However, the tides turned quickly when the other person working went back to check their day old stock and with some luck, there was one loaf left. "I'll take it!" Along with that, I purchased a whole wheat sourdough loaf and chocolate croissant. The croissant was gobbled up right away. Flaky, light, buttery, not greasy at all and a healthy amount of chocolate in there. Yum! We've also been joining the sourdough as toast in the morning for the past few days. Metropol's location is on the smaller side, maybe 5 or so tables, some along a large long wall bench one side of the space. No outside seating as it's part of a strip mall. The walls feature an eclectic collection of artwork with no real theme (maybe just what the owner likes), and I couldn't tell if the artwork was for sale or not like some cafes. The interior felt in need of a good deep cleaning in the customer space, at least. A lot of crumbs, etc. on the floor/tables left behind by patrons. I noticed a "Help wanted" sign still up in the door as we exited so maybe this has fallen behind on being short staff. Metropol is out of the way for me, so I likely won't be back soon. I came to Metropol on a Monday morning around opening and there were already people waiting outside which I took as a good sign! I've seen their pastries being sold at local coffee shops in the area so wanted to give them a try. They have a good amount of pastry and bread options as well as cakes and other desserts. The dessert case was a bit foggy/had some condensation on it so I couldn't see much, but a few cakes looked really nice. They also had food items like breakfast sandwiches and a lunch sandwich menu. I think a lot of people come here for their fresh baked bread loaves which I'm sure are great. I ended up getting a coffee and lemon raspberry muffin. The coffee was solid! They only offered 12, 16, and 20 oz sizes. The muffin was delicious. Strong lemon and raspberry flavor. Very sweet. I loved the glaze on top. Perfectly moist too. I took everything to go since it was a bit dark and musty in there. I don't think it's the type of place to sit down and do work. Metropol probably wont make my weekly coffee rotation but I would definitely come back for the muffin if I find myself in the mood!! Great bakery with delicious pastries and coffee! I'm not a cheesecake person, but a friend ordered a cheesecake for a birthday celebration. It looked good so I tried a small bite. It was really good, and I had two more bites. I normally can't stand cheesecake, so this is pretty impressive. Since then I've tried the bear claw (delicious and HUGE!), the croissant breakfast sandwich (delicious!) , a cafe Borgia (best in town,not sickeningly sweet), and the cream puff (delicious and massive!). I got my dad a cream puff, as it's his favorite dessert. He said it was the best he's ever had.l and I agree. I liked that it also wasn't overpoweringly sweet. Purchased a chocolate pudding tart and a slice of chocolate buttermilk cake. The tart's crust was reminiscent of concrete, the chocolate custard reminiscent of a supermarket powdered box mix. It was inedible. My husband's cake? Stale. To pay over $20 for fresh, made-from-scratch, quality sweets is never a problem. However, paying that for stale pastries? Shame on them. It's been a good 7 years since I have been to Metropol so I thought it was high time I gave them another visit. I remember having a good experience that first time. On my return trip my experience was just ok. The vegan apricot almond cookie was very good. The chai latte was fine. The interior is nice with a lot of natural lighting. However, was pretty bummed to find out that they don't have wifi after I got myself all setup for some remote work. I even made sure to confirm it said they had wifi on their Yelp page before making the trek over. So I had to pack up and go somewhere else to do work. Being a huge chocolate lover, I had to try their mocha, mousse, and chocolate croissant -- which were all very reasonably priced! The mocha was actually one of the best I've had in a while, their mocha sauce is rich but not too sweet. The croissant was delicious toasted, and the design on top is a nice touch. I drove 45 minutes out of my way to buy my son his favorite marionberry pie for his birthday. When I arrived, they had two marionberry pies in the display case for sale for $47 and some change prior to me leaving to the Metropole bakery. I looked online to make sure they still had the Marion Berry pie and they did and it showed me the price of that pie as well online and when I arrived at the Metropole bakery to my surprise, the pie was $48 and the ladies behind the counter told me that the website is wrong and they couldn't sell me the pie for what it is listed for online because Google screwed it up and won't change it so I drove the entire way thinking I could afford the $35 pie and when I got there it was 48 and I had to turn around and leave without a birthday pie for my son. I ordered a cake for my younger sisters memorial. I asked for something delicately decorated in a light pastel pink, a simple shell border with delicate flowers would have been perfect. When I picked it up I saw that it was a dark pink, not pastel and I do not know where the basket weaving idea came from. THEN on top of that the cake was extremely, horribly DRY. It tasted like it had been sitting out for a few days and yes we had to drink a lot of water. I do not write reviews good or bad but the fact that I paid over $100 for the cake and picked it up literally 2 hours prior to the event there was not much I could do. After I tasted the cake I quietly asked a few others and they all agreed that it tasted really old and said I definitely should write a review, so here it is. Borgia. That delectable mocha-esque beverage with a zing of orange zest is the reason I might return to Metropol. (At $3.50 for an 8 oz serving, it would be only an occasional splurge.) I ordered mine sans the standard whipped cream and it was served with a lovely cappuccino-esque design. Nice. There are other good things about Metropol too. Starting with their bread, which is very good. In particular the sourdough whole wheat, which makes great sandwiches. And if you order a sandwich at Metropol, they use good quality ingredients and the sandwich (under $8.00) is large enough to feed two. Four stars for the above. But for other elements of the bakery / café factored in, we end up with three stars and "A-OK". . Meaning we're glad we've tried it, but Metropol is not on my hubby's and my short list for destination recommendation to other visitors to Eugene nor is it a place we make it a priority to visit when we're in town. I seem to be in the minority here, given other Yelp reviews. But the bottom line is with only so many calories, dollars and time to spend during our periodic trips to Eugene, Sweet Life Patisserie remains our first choice for bakery / café and the one we recommend to others. Good people can agree to disagree. Different strokes for different folks. With only a lukewarm review rating for Metropol bakery / café (although we'll continue to seek out Metropol's great bread at other retailers), I'll mention those things that put us off here: The interior seems as if it needs a good polishing up. As example, our most recent visit was about noon, so still pretty early in the day, and everything from windows to floors to tables to pastry cases seemed to need a cleaning. Fair or not, we like bakery cafes to be well tended. Different strokes. Pastries and desserts here have been not as good as expected, although they do make a really good cherry almond Danish using a flaky, croissant style pastry. Otherwise, my experience has been tarts and cakes don't deliver in taste what they promise visually. Different strokes. The location, in the aging and not so well maintained Willamette Square strip mall and positioned between a Waffle House and SuperCuts, isn't great. We prefer bakery / café's that have a neighborhood feel for location. Different strokes. Also for location and accessibility, Metropol itself is level in and on one floor - good for them. However, the strip mall where Metropol is located seems pretty much in need of accessibility tune up. There may be accessible (aka ADA) parking in the strip mall lot but I sure didn't see it and I looked each time. So it may be there, but not easily identifiable for means to get from car to door, which I add as note for Yeeps and other Peeps who need to consider in advance wheelchair accessible parking and path of travel. read more

Awesome product, horrible value. $6.75 for a slice of cake - okay, I accept inflation hit everyone hard, and all that, plus it's awesome cake, and I don't indulge often. But, imagine the sadness when the slice I got was actually a sliver. It was significantly less than two inches at the thickest end (my nearest quarter says it was just a smidge over an inch tall), and it was less than 4 inches from exterior to center (precisely 4 quarters, to be exact). I've always understood the cakes were divided into 12 wedges. The piece I paid full price for was only about 3/4 of what I expected from a regular slice. I dunno if it's shrinkflation, or if I looked like the sort of person who wouldn't raise a fuss over a ridiculously small piece for a ridiculously high price (good guess - I didn't because I loathe confrontation), but I think Metropol and I have come to a final parting of the ways. The slice was fine for me to take home - it certainly doesn't feel very indulgent, but I probably didn't need all the calories anyway (who does?). The real problem is that it was so embarrassingly small, I wouldn't dream of gifting a piece to anyone else as a treat, and I used to do that for all my out of town guests or anyone who needed cheering up. Unfortunately, mean and stingy baked goods do not convey the cheerful message I like to share. I wish the company well - I know they struggled with the pandemic like everyone else - and I still have no complaints about the quality, but the value has sadly tanked to the point I can no longer justify the indulgence or risk the embarrassment. First of all we ordered the cake to say "happy birthday (name)" and they didn't put that on there but the cake was not good AT ALL anyway. THE MAIN reason for one star is because of the awful customer service. We went to pick up a order and the employees behind the counter (3) DID NOT GREET US OR EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE US. Also, their cream puffs for those special occasions are the best (next to Dana's which is only available a few times during the year!) Metropol has a rich blend of custard & pastry cream, and they chocolate they use is so flavorful! I've compared with Sweet Life, and while they have many marvelous treats, neither their cookies or cream puffs come close to Metropol. Found this bakery on Yelp and was not disappointed! We ordered the Metropol Cream Puff. Metropol Cream Puff: It was big! I needed two hands to hold the plate! The cream was perfect, not too thick like it was going to choke you and not too thin like it was watery. Perfect consistency. The "bread" part could be better. It was a bit drier than I would like, I would prefer if it was more spongey so that it soaks up the cream better; however, the bread isn't the main star of the show so I will let it pass. The chocolate was AMAZING and oh so rich, not like that chocolate that has more sugar than cacao. It was a nice compliment with the cream and bread since it was so rich, and it wasn't too soft so that it was oozing everywhere and it wasn't too hard so that it was like a rock. It slowly melted in your mouth so that by the time the cream starts to overwhelm your taste buds, the chocolate comes in to cut the sweetness and add some richness. Overall, I would come again! After reading about their long history I had to stop in! Unfortunately it was a major letdown. First it looks like they haven't spent a dime updating or cleaning the place in a very long time. I can get over that if the food and service is spectacular, but unfortunately it wasn't at all. Desserts were nothing interesting and the chocolate mousse was terrible. The world part was the service. I understand if you hate your job. Take the time and find another but don't stay and be miserable. It is obvious and really reflects poorly on the business. Went to Off the Waffle for overpriced but delicious waffles and it was slammed so me and 2 of my kids walked next door to this confusing place. First impressions, dingy and outdated. Decided from the list of breakfast sandwiches, chose 3 "ham and cheese on a croissant" breakfast sandwiches for $6.50 each. Ordered a macchiato for $2.50. Bill came to $28. Huh? When I inquired, I got a flat "those don't have eggs, the ones with eggs are $8.25". After staring at the menu for 10 minutes I guess I understood? But why list it under all the breakfast sandwiches (that include eggs)? And why charge an extra $1.75 for a couple of mediocre scrambled eggs? I said the menu is confusing. The cranky girl shrugged her shoulders. Kids also saw these cool Oregon Duck frosted cookies. I said ok, then saw the $5.95 price tag. What the frick, I know weed is legal but are you that high? Overall, three mediocre breakfast sandwiches (the butter croissants used were very good and the 2 slices of orange were good), the smallest macchiato I've ever seen (I felt like Andre the giant holding what I can only assume are toy china tea cups) for almost $30. I love love love Metropol Bakery!!! I've been coming here since I was a kid and the level of service and the quality of food has only gotten better. Considering the amount of new restaurants and bakeries that have been springing up around the neighborhood for years, has not deterred this locally owned bakery in the slightest. Two days before Christmas my mom and I got to Metropol to pick up our order (thank god we called ahead) and there is a line out the door and down the side walk! We ordered a seeded baguette, stollen bread and cream puffs. The seeded bread is one of my all time favs. Their homemade french baguette covered in a variety of seeds is heaven! I've given this bread away as gifts for friends who live out of town and they can't get enough of it! Since I was about 6, their cream puffs have been my 'thing'. I always get their cream puffs. These sugary, chocolaty, creamy concoctions are pretty much bigger than your face and you have to share because otherwise you just look like a pig...which is me normally. My mom and I like to come here and have lunch and coffee every now and then and the ambiance is quiet and cozy. They have amazing soups and quiches, and of course the bread. read more
