We arrive and find a walk up window is the only way to purchase anything. The service person wasn't enthusiastic or energetic and almost seemed like they didn't enjoy being there. It is hard to see any of the offerings and the goods that we were able to see were unlabeled and unpriced. For us, shopping for baked goods is a visual experience. We had to squint through a glass door at an angle into a glass cabinet with reflections obstructing the view of the products The blueberry scone was light on blueberries but the glaze added a sweetness and some flavor. The Mushroom gouda turnover was a hot pastry that was flaky and had a nice buttery taste. It was a very flavorful combination that worked quite well. read more

I was so happy to hear I could still get Vanilla Jill's frozen treats so I rushed over to the location. It was a bit difficult to find but it is in a cute location. I got two scoops of ice cream. The portions were like a baby size & even though it was delicious I won't be back. I also found the cashier unenthusiastic & could not really tell me much about the banana bread pudding. I really want to love them, I do. They are great for a good many people who struggle with gluten intolerance. Unfortunately I also struggle with cane sugar, corn syrup, dextrose and maltodextrin, as do a lot of celiacs and gluten intolerant people. Finding sweets or even bread that use other sugars is a nightmare. And while they will ignore the question and tell you every single Reason they use cane sugar when asked what sugars they use (I actually understand the basics of baking), it turns out they do in fact use cane sugar in the majority of their baked goods. Except the sourdough, as is the nature of sourdough. So we got some, because I love a good sourdough. It was not, in fact, a good sourdough. A thin baguette shape, it was very dry and mostly thick tough crust with a massive air bubble throughout, that was a hard day to have a bread craving. Like I said, I want to love and support them, because the rest of what they make is, I'm sure, delightful. And they're passionate and experienced and generally friendly and widely available... but not for us. read more

Everything we tried was very dense. Also the donuts and cupcakes tasted as though they had been frozen at some point. The frosting on the cupcakes was delicious though so we just ate that part. Sourdough bread was off in flavor and texture and so thick. We needed up throwing everything away except for the banana bread. That was only thing that was good and worth the money. So If you come here, I recommend only getting banana bread. read more

Yes! I am so happy that this place exists. I am someone who tries to stick to a strict vegan diet but it's a struggle when I also have an enormous sweet tooth. But I love that I can satisfy my sweet cravings without regret at Elegant Elephant. They offer desserts that are gluten-free, nut-free, or vegan. On this visit I basically ordered everything they had on the menu that was vegan. (The fig bar I ordered wasn't vegan but I HAD to order it. I had to!) Everything was very good. I had originally found this establishment a couple of years ago, when I was driving down some random road in Eugene (I live on the coast, and I don't know Eugene very well) and saw their truck in a parking lot. We loved the items that we got, but the things that looked most irresistible were sold out and we were advised that calling in a day or so ahead to place an order is the best way of getting those particular items. The fact that this is a dedicated gf facility really ensured that I would be patronizing this store whenever I'm in Eugene. So this time, I placed (and paid for) an order in advance, and I am so happy that I did so. The cheese danish with pineapple/passionfruit compote was simply amazing. Not as flaky as a traditional danish, but I wasn't expecting it to be. Baking without the help of gluten really is different. But the pastry itself was delicious- moist, tender, not overly sweet, to provide the perfect foil for the sweet, delicious filling (which was very generous in quantity as well). They got the proportions of pastry to filling exactly right. The gingerbread people are adorable, and also happen to be delicious. The vanilla donut with lemon was delicious, although it had significantly more vanilla buttercream than I would have preferred. That didn't stop it from being delicious though, and next time I will eat it at a time other than while driving, so that I can take some of that frosting off. I don't fault the bakery one bit for this, I realize that most people prefer a lot more frosting on things than I do. I'll be updating, or writing another review, after I've had a chance to try a couple more items. I have high hopes for the cinnamon roll and the cream puff. And of course the chocolate donut. I wish that I had thought to grab a sourdough baguette and a loaf of some kind of sliced bread. Probably potato. Next time, for sure. These talented people really know their way around a kitchen, even a gf one. read more

I really like their products, some of the better GF baked goods that I've had. Their almond bread, dinner rolls, scones, and cupcakes are all particular favs. (The almond bread can get a bit dry but I've found if you keep it in the fridge and/or just toast it before eating it, it stays moist a bit longer.) When I go to the storefront, it's usually to get a scoop of Vanilla Jill's--I miss the VJ storefront, but I'm glad the products still exist, and I love being able to get tasty flavors that fit my dietary restrictions. This rating is based on experience at the store. After having their products and appreciating how conscientious they are with dietary needs/allergies, I decided to pay a visit to their shop, figuring that I'd have tons of options and be able to confirm allergens right from the source. The store is on the east side of the building, and there were several parking spaces right out front. The shop was small, but it was an inviting, modern space. There were two tall seats available inside, and a two-person table outside. The trouble began when my friend ordered an oat milk cappuccino. The girl behind the counter got super nervous, and said she didn't know if they had any oat milk. She opened the fridge, found something in a jar, said she didn't know when it was from, and doesn't know how to make cappuccino. My friend walked her through it, but she got even more nervous, and said she didn't know if she was doing any of it right. She then charged full price for it, and it turned out to be virtually undrinkable. They had several baked goods listed as vegan, but no other allergens listed next to the item (like I've seen at Vanilla Jill's). I asked if the oat bars contained soy, and she said she didn't know, and didn't make any effort to find out, so I was unable to order any desserts. I'm on crutches right now and it's a lot of effort for me to get out, and it was disappointing to not get what I came for. I did get a sourdough baguette which tasted great, and my friend loved her banana bread. Hopefully my experience was an anomaly, because I have no idea why they'd leave someone there by herself who was unable to make the drinks on their menu, or give any ingredient information in a place that prides itself on taking allergies seriously. read more

After meaning to go for over a year and then stopping by a few weeks ago when they were closed, I finally made it to the shop! I don't need to be gluten free for health reasons, but I like to try foods that cater to different dietary needs. They've got a solid set up for COVID: customers stand outside and order through a plexiglass divider across the door. Baked goods are visible through the door, and I was so appreciative that they use a speaker system so it's easy to hear and the customer and server aren't shouting through plastic at each other. I ordered the server's recommendations: a cream puff and a ham & cheese croissant. I heated up the croissant at home. To be honest, it wasn't my favorite but I think I would have liked it with different filling. The pastry was tasty, albeit brittle. The server said it's a top pick for customers, so I'm sure I'm an outlier here. The cream puff, on the other hand, was delish. Texture was different from a traditional cream puff--a little bit tougher--but that's to be expected with a gluten free product. Overall, I'll likely be back to try something else (ice cream next time!) and I'll definitely recommend this to anyone who eats gluten free! read more

Oh my god the strawberry rhubarb muffin was actually straight up the worst thing I've ever put in my mouth. I can't even describe how gross it was. Me and the 2 people I was with all almost threw up because of how disgusting it tasted. I legitimately think it was rotten rhubarb. Even smelling it was horrible. I used to like rhubarb but I don't think I ever want to taste it again now. My Mother in Law had a cake made at Elegant Elephant for my daughter's birthday. Lemon with raspberry fill and it was beautiful appearing . It was the most horrid tasting thing any of us had ever tried. There must have been a mistake in the kitchen because I couldn't get the strong chemical taste out of my mouth for over 30 minutes. I'm a bit afraid of what non-natural substance was used. Obviously the cake was taken back (very expensive) but they have so far refused a refund. We will not return and I strongly advise avoiding this place. Update : The "elegant elephant" in the room was located! (they responded to the complaint after a week). They agree that it was a really bad cake, but also feel compelled to explain that they shouldn't accept all custom orders, that the mix of lemon and raspberry and other ingredients was not a good idea (so we are partly responsible? It was kind of like an angry apology from an abusive partner). They said that they have fully credited her credit card, but we haven't confirmed this. My previous suggestion to avoid the place is changed to: Stay with what they know (ask for a sample?). read more

Stopped by to try some sweet treats from Elegant Elephant. The location is a tricky one even using google maps. It sent me to a red building called the sollaria. This is not the location, they are actually in the grey building in front of the red. Once I got that figured out, it was easy enough to locate. They are a walk up window down a small set of stairs. One thing I noticed is that seeing the offerings available is difficult with this set up. The display case is in the left corner and hard to see clearly. There is a menu but I have no idea what is what unless it is painfully obvious. The other thing I noticed, and you will see from the menu, almost everything is sold out. I am not sure if this is normal for a Sunday. I arrived at 11:30 so maybe the morning rush left them low on inventory? I got the red velvet cupcakes, mini donuts and a cream puff as well as two scones. The donut was a little bitter, perhaps the cocoa powder? The Cream puff was great but not sweet at all, which I love but may turn others off. The scone was good but a little gritty aftertaste. The food itself I received is beautifully decorated. This is a cute little place that I may try again perhaps earlier in the morning. read more

Elegant Elephant does truly make elegant gluten-free bakery items that are impossible to distinguish from gluten-filled treats. They are beautiful! I am giving a lower rating because the sugar content in these items is over the top, equal to a Safeway-style sheet cake. The sugar overwhelms all other flavors and makes me feel like an addict. I would love it if they would use some alternative sweeteners to cane sugar, and decrease the quantity. Maybe think about doing some keto and low-carb treats, so all of us gluten-free folk can enjoy a treat once in a while without going into sugar shock. read more

Appreciate the bakery catering to gluten-free diets but both items purchased, a coconut cardamom muffin and a chocolate croissant are inedible. The chocolate croissant is raw, the pastry seems like it was meant to be pie dough. There's no buttery or flaky element. The cardamom coconut muffin is a rock, grainy, and no distinguishing flavor other than some sugar on the top. Both pastries were boxed up and given to us completely cold- like they were thawing from being frozen. 8 dollars can get you a damn good pastry elsewhere in Eugene and I highly recommend you find your sweet treat at a better business. read more

I love the banana bread. Unfortunately, I ordered a sugar-free chocolate cream pie for mother's day and it was inedible. I wish I had tried something sugar-free on a smaller scale before ordering a special dessert for a special day. I had seen a picture of a sugar-free dessert that they posted on Facebook some time back and it looked beautiful. The chocolate cream pie was beautiful too, but no one could take a second bite. The chocolate was so overpowered by the taste of stevia that you would have never guessed it was a chocolate dessert. Chocolate and cream don't need much sweetening to be tasty, so I thought it was a safe bet, but the only flavor was stevia, overwhelmingly stevia with a powerful and lingering bitter stevia aftertaste. I absolutely respect what they do here. Just be aware of this in case you ever hope to have a sugar and gluten-free dessert. read more

The Elegant Elephant is a wonderful idea, but I think they need to play with some of their recipes in order to create consistent and delicious treats. Gluten and dairy-free baking has gotten so good these days, so the standards (and expectations) are even higher than before--especially if that is going to be your expertise in a retail setting. I love to bake and am no expert, but I've stumbled on some recipes that produces cakes that are moist and really enjoyable, often making people wonder if it is dairy and gluten-free. What we ordered could have been bad choices, but they were heavy, dense, and lacked flavour. We ordered the cream puff, 4 vegan cupcakes, ham/cheese croissant, and brownie. The brownie was the best. We aren't celiac, but gluten-sensitive and my daughter is allergic to dairy. We were pretty excited to see all the variety of options they bake, but we expected to be "wow'd," especially after having spent almost $30 on the above. I am happy that some people like this place, but I am doubtful that we'll be back. read more

I can't eat gluten at all and some of the options make me think I haven't given up gluten at all, they are such accurate replacements. However, other items are a little dry for my taste. Only three stars so far.. the owner needs to understand that we are trying this bakery because we have problems with food. Usually!! Anyway, having someone be able to engage with the customers at the counter would be nice. Also I spent $24.75 on items but at the last minute decided to change a hand pie to a blackberry hand pie giving me a credit of $1.25. The poor girl had no idea what to do. I had told her to just throw a cookie or a small thing in. To make up the difference. Rather than doing that since nothing was $1.25 she told me she would credit me... I dug through my purse to find nickels and pennies to come up with the extra 75 cents. I was late for a doctors appointment.. not her fault. But seriously!! She needs to be able to make judgment calls on being able to add a small cookie or mini cupcake to the order. I owned a flower show for year's and I would have excepted my employees to add tissue or a bow to the order even if the customer didn't have the 75 cents. Just like flowers this is a product that goes bad and has to be thrown away if not used. This young lady seems to be the same person who came to the window with not a lot of knowledge about the products from other reviewers. With that being said... I eat the cupcake with white frosting and chocolate cake. Again as other reviewers said the cake was very cold and tasted as it was being unthawed. It wasn't bad just kind of hard. The frosting was to die for!! Like really delicious! I have a hand pie and other stuff I was going to try tomorrow. Again to the owner.. please explain that you need to make judgements on each order and it really wouldn't hurt to throw in something to make up the difference in this situation. I did tip her a dollar on my credit card also. In my mind I thought we'll use the 75 from your tip. Not trying to get something for free either I just decided to get a lesser price item. It would have made a difference of my opinion of this quaint little place. I am all about great customer service. Delicious gluten free food. I love the flavor--it doesn't rely on sugar to cover up disgust tastes you often find in gluten free. The deserts especially are just good. Those on a GF diet for disease will be in Pastry heaven, and many desserts are paleo, making them less likely to pack on carbs, which pack on pounds. The only complaint I have is they run out of goodies too fast! read more
