This bakery/patisserie has been a staple in South Eugene for years, and they never disappoint when it comes to quality and service! Although everyone else has attested to their baked goods, I have to stand up for their fruit smoothies: real fruit, yogurt, and honey (no ice) makes this one of the freshest and tastiest smoothies offered in Eugene, and at only $4 for 20oz it's a full, fresh meal at a great price! Overpriced and the young woman who cut my piece of cheeee cake was very stingy. She gave me a "one-biter" slice. Seriously, it was so small even a mouse would turn it down! How they stay in business is beyond me. Their staff also lack the zest of customer service. I've had lunch here many times, but today was a disaster. Their quiche has always been good, but today it was so undercooked that I could see raw egg and strips of grated cheese. When I took it back to the counter a woman came out and told me that it wasn't undercooked, it just looks like it. Seriously? I know what raw egg looks like, and the cheese wasn't melted! Then she just shoved it back at me and walked away. Gee, great customer service! I guess at Metropol the customer is always wrong? Had a chocolate filled croissant and caramel latte in the afternoon. The croissant was surprisingly good for being served mid day and stored in a sealed plastic wrap, but the espresso was really bad. I would stick with baked goods here and avoid coffee drinks. read more

Shout out to Metropol Bakery I found them after calling a few other bakeries in Eugene. I needed a Birthday cake delivered to my Duck in her favorite red velvet. They don't have this flavor on their regular menu but do make it over Valentines and agreed to make it early for her big day on the 26th. They made and delivered it right on time before she started class and for about half the price than all the other places local and online. Best of all, my Duck was surprised and she and her roommates all agreed it was one of the best cakes they'd ever eaten. #scoducks #metropolbakery read more

Apple cake made me want to cream my pants.. Super dense, this stuff made my knees buckle. Chocolate rasberry moose cake was a bit rich for my taste but my wife loved it, she finished it all. Im pretty sure she licked the plate. Slices are about a dollar too high for me at 5.75/slice to be a frequent customer but the cake is on point. EDIT: Treating your longtime customers like shit because they dare to ask for a plastic bag is just not cool. I was floored that after browbeating me for being one of "those people," the counter person went off similarly on the next guy in line, who mentioned he also liked to freeze Metropol loaves in the plastic bags. On my next visit I politely inquired whether maybe they'd brought back the plastic bags, and a *different* person behind the counter gave me a bunch of shit about it! Now, the issue isn't really the bags, it's being rude to customers. That said, there is no prohibition against providing plastic bags for grocery items, and the ones they used to provide are by far the best way to freeze their bread for any length of time. I'm all for sustainability and carried my own reusable shopping bags years before they became fashionable, but there are a few applications for which plastic is practical and this is one. I still go once a year, to buy my dad a carrot cake for his birthday, because he loves their carrot cake and I'm willing to be treated like something they found on the bottom of their shoe to provide it to him. Metropol is where grown-ups go for their bread. Whereas other bakeries in town offer sugary sweet treats served with a modicum of disdain, or perhaps stale pastries offered up by bored, forgetful college students, Metropol offers the real deal. Professional people prepare your quiche (washing their hands first, and then wearing gloves no less!) and the folks who handle the register, wash their hands before touching your edibles. Ah, food handling. If being clean isn't enough to get you there, how about the EXCELLENT breads? My long-time fave is the birdseed bread. That stuff will cure what ails you. I'll never forget packing a loaf of it for a week-long hike. The bread survived being stored at the bottom of my backpack in a brown paper bag for days. We brought small vials of wonderful olive oil and balsamic to drizzle on chunks of it at the end of a long day. Dreamy. But I digress. Metropol also offers a whole wheat sourdough boule that is second to none. It's so good, in fact it doesn't seem like whole wheat. All the better. In addition, their baguettes, ciabatta rolls, and the Fig Hazelnut aim to please. Breads are really the staple here, rather than sweets, but believe me-- once you have bread by someone who specializes, you'll taste the difference. Anyone who makes great bread is aware of the power of fantastic soup--right? Metropol is no exception to this rule. They've become my go-to spot for a quick lunch or an early dinner stop. Wonderful, amazing soups. and with a hunk of their bread a person is really set for the rest of the day or evening for less than $6. Since I've moved away from Eugene, this is one of the few places there that I truly miss. I love the seeded baguette, but I never remember to pack the floss to get all those poppy seeds out of my teeth afterwards. Metropol has the one and only dessert in the world that cannot be duplicated anywhere, and that is their famous September 7th cake. Chocolate sponge cake, cream filling, and an addictively-fluffy mocha icing. Oh My Peace. Way, way better than Sweet Life. They have much more balanced flavor, and their desserts are not too sweet. I love the odds and ends case at the end of the display fridge. If I'm feeling indecisive, it's a great decision-maker. Their September Seventh cake is to-die-for. I love that it's not chocolate frosting, but mousse on the outside. I had a Marion berry Scone which was great along with a Mocha Malt that was also great, albeit, it scalding hot! Dummy me! Everything in the counter looked wonderful. Today is international Pi day, March 14, so I figured I should go get some pie to celebrate. Found this place on yelp and the pictures of the strawberry tarts looked absolutely amazing, so hopped in my car and went. Their cake selection was beautiful and the place is very cute. Ordered chicken pot pie (comes with salad and bread) and a strawberry tart. Total was $18, a bit pricey for a college student like myself (but hey, it's a national holiday so why not treat myself?) I was severely disappointed with the strawberry tart. The one I was served did not look like pictures from other reviewers- frankly it looked and tasted at least a day old. I got through about half of the mini sized tart before I couldn't make myself eat anymore. The strawberries were dried up and dark and the crust was embarrassingly stale. I was surprised a bakery would serve a tart in this condition. I gave a couple stars for the pot pie which was very cute and pretty good, and the salad and bread were, well, just salad and bread. Also, to go boxes cost .05 which isn't much but if you've already paid for your meal it's a bit ridiculous to have to do another transaction for this (they will wrap your leftovers on a paper plate for free if you bring it up to the register, kind of odd) Anyway, for $18 I wouldn't buy this meal again. Probably won't come back, not much love in me for a place that serves old food. read more

Sticky bun roll review only -- Bleck. How can you go wrong with butter, brown sugar, cinnamon and walnuts? There wasn't any sticky bun glaze -- the sugar was still granulated, but somehow it was still greasy and overly buttery. Hard and stale most of the way through, even though it was supposed to have been from that day. It's a sad day when I don't feel like finishing a sticky bun :( read more

I recently attended a meeting to which someone had generously brought along a box of Metropol cookies... and was reminded of how classic, comforting, and simply yummy Metropol's pastries are! I don't live on this side of town and thus prefer to frequent Noisette for my pastry and bread-y needs... but may now find myself on South Willamette more often. Metropol's cookies -- walnut chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, and crackly, chewy chocolate-- are a divine taste of Americana, made just the way I love; simultaneously chewy and crispy. A number of the cakes are sweeter than I'd prefer, but overall, it's obvious that the pastries are fresh (that is, never frozen) and that makes a huge difference, esp. in the Eugene baking scene. If I hadn't been among the company of others, I would've put away far more than the ... five cookies... I had at the meeting. read more

It's been a while since I sampled Metropol's products. My last time was before the pandemic. Their buttermilk chocolate cake is the best simple chocolate cake I have had around town this summer. It's flavorful and not overwhelming sweet. Their sourdough bread is also on point; just right. Customer service was very good. I'm glad I came back. One of the poorest quality baguette I have had in a while! I use to love their bread, about twenty years ago.... Way too large(as in the size), over-yeasted, under-fermented, over-salted, seriously most grocery store bakeries have bread made this way! I am a professional baker, so I don't like to eat other people's baked goods unless they can truly deliver. Of all the bakeries Eugene has to offer, Metropol is one of my favorites. Their display cases are nicely balanced between super fancy cakes, basic comfort foods like cups of mousse, pastries and artisan breads. Everything I have eaten at Metropol has been excellent, with each bite savored. I especially love the mousse and tarts, along with some of their more breakfast friendly pastries, like the Cinnamon Guy. If you don't want sweets, they also have excellent sandwiches. I wish their space was a little bigger and that they had an area where you could bus your own table. Their current set up has them bussing tables and during peak times it can get a little crazy finding a clean space to grab. That's not a big deal, though. read more

I have fond memories from my early days of the original fifth street location. The baguettes, the cookies, and occasionally the cream puffs were, and still are, top notch. When in the area, I've still been known to drop by this new location for their amazing cream puff. The chocolate is strong, but still plenty sweet, the cream filling is splendid and the pastry shell is just the right puffy/crisp consistency. Also the portion is sufficient to feed la Grande Armee. I'd give Metropol four stars for their bread: the ciabatta, sourdough, baguettes, and croissants are all delicious. The desserts are not as good -- the chocolate cake is on the dry side, and the truffles are nothing special. I've been disappointed with their espresso drinks, too, and overall, it's overly expensive for the quality of the items offered. read more

We wish we could combine Metropol's delicious goodies and easier parking with Sweet Life's customer service. That would be like the best little spot ever. :) Metropol makes wonderful cakes, breads, sandwiches, coffee, just everything! But we experience hit or miss customer service. Sometimes you get a lovely welcoming sort of person taking your order and assisting you and other times you get someone who makes you feel like you are either bothering them or a hoity-toity you don't deserve to be there sort of attitude. We love the days when the customer service is great, because everything else is so good! We took one star off for the sometimes bad customer service, and also because the indoor seating area could use a redo to make it a bit more comfortable. Other than that, it's wonderful. I am becoming a big fan of The Metropol. The bakery items are beautiful to look at and even more fun to eat! Yesterday my daughter-in-law and I had a simply scrumptious chocolate mousse! We also split a chicken salad sandwich. Of course, the bread is fantastic! My favorite sandwich, though, is the turkey. I was not as fond of the mushroom soup. It was a little too grainy for me since they had pureed most of it. The other nice thing about the place is that the tables are close and people go in there to read, work on their computer, and meet other folks to talk to. We have met two scholarly people who come in regularly to discuss current affairs. Yesterday we were there for over 2 hours eating and talking to them! It was fun. read more

This is a review of the baguette and nothing else. Ok, so it's better than the grocery variety, including Market of Choice, but this baguette is far too dense for my tastes. It feels like it weighs about a pound and half, and is more spongy inside than light and airy. Reminds me a little of Essential Baking in Seattle, which I also don't like. Great chocolate croissants and Oregon Chai Latte. The latte wasn't too sweet or too spicy, it was just right and while it could have been steamed for a little longer, I was happy it wasn't scalding hot. The croissant was flaky and buttery and filled with chocolaty goodness. The Eiffel Tower chocolate design on top was why it got it...I couldn't resist sharing it with my boyfriend whose from France and knows a good croissant when he tastes one. The women at the counter were friendly and they have a great selection of day old bread loaves as well as day old pastries. They serve food items like quiche and sandwiches and tempt you with cases of cakes and other decadent desserts. Next time I go in I will definitely be buying a loaf of bread to take home and enjoy with my roommates. read more

Do they really expect gimmicks like decorating chocolate-filled croissants with the Eiffel Tower to really work?!@! Because they do work! My wife stopped in here earlier this morning while we were waiting for breakfast next door because she saw the photos on Yelp for these croissants and the next thing I know she comes back with one of these and a blueberry tart as well. Blueberry tart could have been better, but it isn't blueberry season anymore. The croissant was good too, but we didn't eat it until much later in the day -- I am sure it would have tasted much better if we had eaten it when it was more fresh. read more

I had a delicious slice of marionberry pie here. It was perfect and delectable. I want to go back to try the other options. I also like the art scattered around the bakery. I was almost tempted to buy a piece! The only flaw of this place were the dirty tables. There are crumbs and little food leftovers on the table. The employees should really wipe down the tables. It's a health hazard and it just looks dirty. Perhaps, the management should implement a bus-it-yo-self practice because it seems to work at other restaurants. I was also off-put by the columns at the storefront. That's a little much, but I guess the baked goods speak for themselves. New to Eugene, I read about this spot on Yelp. I ordered the Parisian Chicken Salad sandwich on seeded baguette (thought I should try this bread since I'd read great things). I LOVED my sandwich! The chicken salad was all white meat (covered in some kind of yummy nuts), apples, and celery .. mixed together with mayo. It was an indulgence but well worth it. I also got my little one a plain crossiant that was lovely. I will definitely be going back with my family to try other items. The service was also very good. I went in around 11:00 a.m. on a Tuesday, so the odds were in my favor. The gals working there were patient, helpful, and nice - allowing me to sample some bread to see if it was what I wanted. Also, my sandwich was ready really quickly. While in there I noticed a couple of moms eating with several kids, so I am glad it's a child-friendly spot. On my second visit, I tried the tuna melt and did not enjoy it. It had too much cheese and the tuna was a bit too dark and fishy tasting for me. The tuna also lacked the crunchy stuff I like in tuna salad, so it was just mushy and fishy. However, the seeded baguette never disappoints. BUT I also had a chocolate croissant (for dessert!) and it was awesome! I got a blueberry muffin for my son and it was also insanely delicious. So, I plan to keep going back but I will steer clear of the tuna melt. read more

French bread and desserts from the Metropol have been a Eugene staple for decades. I remember watching the baking staff work while waiting in line in the basement if the 5th Street Market years ago. First time I have been here and I will be coming back soon! The chicken soup of the day, even though I can't pronounce it or attempt to try to spell it, was delicious. A mix between minestrone and french onion. Parmesan melted into the soup, large chunks of juicy chicken, lots of vegetables, and perfect seasoning. The boyfriend ordered a ham and cheese croissant and we shared a veggie sandwich that came with everything! The croissant earned his stamp of approval which is a very hard thing to do. Thick layers of ham, melted cheddar cheese, deliciousness. I love the decor! The rounded textured ceiling made me feel like I was in a loaf of bread, not a bad place to be, and the style was elegant. A great place to study. The pastries looked like small adventures waiting to happen. I will need to try one the next time I am in the area. Until then, Metropol remains a definite fav. read more

First the cakes, etc are first rate! Alas the service doesn't measure up late in the day and on week ends. The popularity of Metropol often puts the staff in overwhelm trying to keep up. Last weekend I went in and after waiting in line for about 10 minutes I got my raspberry/chocolate cake and coffee...first rate. Alas I had to use a paper cup for the coffee and a plastic fork for the cake. This same symptom of understaffing has happened before and appears to me to be chronic. I am posting this with the hope management will address the issues presented and fix them. In the interim I suggest taking the excellent cakes home with you. read more
