Metropol has very nice ambiance, yet a casual Eugene feeling. Good, solid bakery for bread and cakes, plus a nice storefront for sitting with a sandwich, light meal or dessert. Their carrot cake is absolutely the best in town, with very well balanced cream cheese frosting and crushed walnuts. They do a nice breakfast sandwich with eggs and bacon on a croissant or bun, which comes with fruit. They'll put it on bread if you request it--the birdseed is fantastic. If you order it to go, they'll wrap it in foil on a paper plate. It's just nice. However, I often find my eggs underdone, so remember to ask for them dry if you're squeamish like me. Gooey egg whites pretty much ruin an experience for me. I also recommend the macaroni and cheese, which is a nice classic mac and cheese baked with tiny cubes of bread on top. It's a bit of a small serving, but comes with salad and leaves room for an opera cookie or lemon mousse. read more

Every time I have to drive to Portland, I fortify myself for the trip with a Cinnamon Guy and a cappucino. So good.

I bought a sweet life cake for my wedding and 2 cakes from the metropol Everyone loved the met cakes but had a number of complaints about the sweet life cake. Way to much frosting and dry cakes. The decoration on the outside wern't quite what we had in mind. read more

Coffee Review Only: Simply put... Wonderful Latte! The coffee is dark and strong, the foam is creamy and white, the taste is wonderful, and the mouth feel is a close to perfect as possible. The staff is happy, and good to the customers, and the costs are not that bad... The wait is short... All in all, I was very pleased with my Latte. This place is tucked in downtown so you might miss it if you weren't looking for it, but I love the bread here, and its a really nice place to pop in for a quick afternoon pick-me-up coffee and treat. I am writing this review in a somewhat flabbergasted state of mind. My fiancé and I just happened upon this bakery while waiting for some nearby "to-go" dinner order. We happened to walk in at exactly 6 pm on a Sunday, not knowing it was closing time. As I walked in I noted "wow, why do we always drive across town to Sweet life when we could come here?!" I unfortunately realized the answer to my question as we perused the cake display. Looking for a quick to go bite to eat, the woman behind the counter tells us "sorry guys, we are closed. My manger will be here shortly and we have to do some stuff..." At 6:00 pm... on the dot. I guess I know now why we don't frequent this establishment, if they weren't willing to stay open 2 entire minutes longer to sell us two pieces of cake to go. Absolutely ridiculous. Neither of us will be back if this is the welcome we receive for trying to support local business. read more

Product is consistent been going to Metropol since it opened friendly staff and great food. The issue which has been happening of late is the size of cake slices which you would think would be about the same each time. But as a regular you know the portion sizes and when you receive on a occasion which has been more and more consistent of late almost less than half the normal portion and say something they look at you like you have know clue about the portion sizes. Then they have the audacity to talk about you as if you are not even present while standing in front of them. The cake size is not as crucial although with regular you would like to see the same each time but when they are rude and comment about you that is totally unprofessional. read more

I have to agree with several of the people who have expressed that the attitude of the counter employees, I often feel as if I am imposing on them. I adore their cream puffs and they have the best cheese cake hands down. I visited the 5th Street location often for desserts and bread, but since the move, I only trek across once a year for my birthday treat to myself. I wish the employees were friendlier, then I would love to sit and enjoy this wonderful bakery more often. read more

Just went to get a loaf of bread @ 4pm and saw a 2 for one day old sign up. Cool...picked up 2 and was told it would be $7.00. I questioned $7.00 for one loaf of day old bread? I was told it was only if they had excess. I saw about 20 loaves on the day old shelf...Don't know why they put that sign up but we opted for one loaf. Should have asked for a fresh loaf or walked out but didn't want to argue. I am done with Metropol. Going the Corporate way I guess...too bad. Eugene City Bakery will have my 3 day a week business from now on. read more

A local small bakery done in a French rustic decor. Absolutely outstanding desserts, breads and coffees. Many recommend their breads. Lots of pastry and coffee customers. The food choices are limited but adequate, The chicken pot pie was great with a buttery crust. The mac and cheese was average and a bit dry but nice and cheesy. We were there mid afternoon so probably the last portion. This with a coffee was $24.25, a bit high. One of the young ladies there needs a bit more customer service training. The response , after thank you, should be "your welcome", not " no problem". Asking, may I help you, rather than a blank stare is the way to do it while standing at the counter. And of course, a smile like the other ladies there would be nice. Maybe the management can help. The take home cake slice for $6.50 was truly delightful but about half the size of other bakery shops and overpriced. We would go back for a dessert and a coffee and hopefully a courteous smile. We would pass on the food. We are well traveled boomers with a keen sense for the sweets, and this places's desserts are worth trying. read more

this bakery is SO hit and miss......the product they DO have is very good. HOWEVER..........there is NO consistency in what they carry. Dirty store, filthy floors. If the front of your shop is in this state I can't imagine the state of the areas where the food is made. Used to love this place but after a long absence I am sad to see the decline. I still purchased but the state of the store really made me want to walk out. The quality of the baguette was OK the sticky buns were gooey and not in a good way, the sourdough was a little better than OK....all in all nothing special or worth the trip. I wouldn't recommend. There are cleaner places that serve baked goods just as good or better. read more

We are serious bakery buffs, and this is our favorite in Eugene. The croissant are amazing, the soups are always great, the baguette is legendary. Try the chicken pot pie - it's so beautiful. The Metropol Chocolate cake is my definition of perfect cake. The desserts are never too sugary like some other places. Friendly atmosphere and quite a wonderful art collection too. read more

My wife and I are semi -regular customers(once or twice a month) and have yet to have anything that has been sub-par. I am addicted to their "cinnamon guy", soooooooo good with a cafe au lait, and my wife loves tgheir almond croissant. Their bread is consistently good and hearty, and their apple crumb pie is always a hit. We've had lunch there as well(mushroom soup, salad etc) and it was a nice change of pace. read more
