Found this via Trip Advisor in St. Augustine, FL. The menu was interesting, with a decent variety of diner standards and unique favorites. The staff was friendly, although not always around when you needed them. The Metro Melt (burger with swiss and grilled onions on toasted rye) was good. Not outstanding, but worth eating. The kids menu left something to be desired. The regular menu was filled with great sounding items, but the kids menu was left with only 4 standards (not even a burger!) Overall decent experience. My wife and I like food...a lot. So when we travel, our meals are planned in the same manner as our activities; they're that important to us. Needless to say this was our first time at Metro Diner. I didn't think it was possible but somehow these guys perfectly executed three of my favorites dishes...corned beef hash, fried chicken, and waffles. We moved here from Chicago 9 months ago. We know great local food places and diners. This place is outstanding and better than any I know of in Chicago!! I know that's a bold statement but HEY!!! Try it! Ok we have now been here 5 times. Today is the first for breakfast. We can in at noon for a very late breakfast, we had about a 10 minute wait then got seated. The service was pretty quick. I ordered the corn beef hash with poached eggs. And split a waffle because I just had to try one here. The corn beef special is simply the best I've ever had!! During you meal almost always the manager drops by your table to see how the service and food is. It's kind of cool how he explained the process they use to make their corn beef so good. He said everybody who has it the first time just rave about it. So, go out of you way and get to Metro you will love it Ok we're here for 50th visit, at least.....very good as always, we had Stefani waiting on us tonight, had her 5-6 times before, consistently excellent service. My husband and i had dinner at Metro Diner tonight, it was our first time at this restraunt but will not be our last I had the most amazing chef salad the ingredients were very fresh and it was huge! The young lady who served us i believe her name was Kelly very pleasant and very attentive my drink was refilled before i even ran out she often checked to see how our food was and if she could get us anything else. I wish i had service that pleasant and efficient every time. My husband had the chicken and waffles and said it was delicious. I highly recommend this eatery i will definitely be back and will be asking for that server. read more

I was surprised to hear the restaurant is a chain. Everything is homemade. We had some of the specialties and all were excellent: meatloaf, monte cristo, fried chicken, Mac and cheese and mashed with gravy. They served local craft beers and the soups change daily. It's just another diner. Nothing special. The menu is just like every other diner in the US so you don't even really need it. It gets pretty busy but plenty of parking outside. Our food was decent nothing spectacular. The fries were frozen and there was a lot of them. The entrees were so-so. No big deal. After a short wait we were seated in this classic diner. It felt like a southern rendition of Jerry Seinfeld's favorite diner--lots of character without beating you over the head with theming. We ordered the kids chicken fingers with a biscuit (the prerequisite item to determine a breakfast spot's worthiness), cheeseburger benedicts and a classic Monte Cristo. Expectations were high based on the inventive menu and word-of-mouth. The coffee was fantastic and the earthenware mugs and advertising placemats complete the homey feel. Breakfast arrived pretty quickly although the Monte Cristo was a tad late. Our waitress brought a biscuit so no one had to eat alone--nice touch. Metro is my favorite restaurant in St Augustine---- for regular food. It has so many yummy items I spend way to long trying to make a decision. Service has always been excellent and food is always hot and fresh. Skip peak times because it's busy---- that's a good thing. We go around 2:00 and never wait. Been here every once a week, every week for the past 6 weeks on Monday or Tuesday. Service has been good, but was outstanding today. Her name was Alexis. Around when you need her and not intrusive when you don't. Outstanding. Food has been good to very good. Poached eggs are tough to get right. I get it. Over done today. Continuing to improve. Amazing breakfast spot! The food is very tasty ! We also brought our four legged partner in crime as they allowed outdoors seating with pets , this is a much added bonus! The portions are large and the food is absolutely delicious, they're sweetened peach ice tea is a specialty of the house and I had 2 refills! Wow that was a memorable breakfast. I got the Croissant French Toast. I wanted to try something I have never had before. We were visiting on vacation from Connecticut. This was just amazing. It was flaky and hard to describe the awesomeness. It was a very unique taste and texture. Can not recommend it highly enough. I asked and apparently they do offer real maple syrup for a small upcharge. Service was extremely friendly and very efficient. I can't think of a bad thing to say. Perhaps they should mention they offer real maple syrup. It is sort of a big deal to us New Englanders but please do remember it goes A LONG WAY compared to the fake stuff. Our waitress Ashley was great, really very helpful. If you are looking for breakfast in this area then wow, go there and get what I got for sure. This was a great local's place - food done their way right next to Ohio State. Their soup they had when I was there was crispy potato soup- YUM! I could've eaten tons of it. I also ordered a 2-egg scrambled breakfast with added mushrooms, hash browns, and sourdough toast. That was average, what you'd expect, and it hit the spot. Went Friday morning during summer, wait estimated at 15-20 min, actually seated in 10. Waitress Rebecca was excellent, friendly, attentive. Food was top quality, we had breakfast burger that was cooked perfectly, bagel and lox that was very tasty, and egs benedict that was also tasty and perfectly cooked. The newest place in St Augustine and already so popular there's a line out front for bothering breakfast and lunch. They supply chairs and ice water while you're waiting, though, and it's kind of sociable. The place has a huge Southern-style menu and equally huge portions. The staff is cheerful and efficient and seems to like working there. Even though it's busy, the food - a creative take on diner food - is piping hot and served quickly. Everything is super fresh and well prepared. They serve both breakfast and lunch all day. The blueberry waffles looked great, btw, although I was busy with another excellent dish. While visiting Saint Augustine we wanted to try a new place for breakfast and we decided to give the Metro Diner a try. The diner sits in a large retail center with plenty of parking. When we walked in we were greeted by an enthusiastic and smiling young lady who took us to our table. A smiling waitress, Cassidy, and her trainee Didi, came over quickly and took our drink orders. While looking over the menu we saw a smiling waitress help a handicapped man in a wheelchair put on his jacket. You can see the theme here, friendly, smiling, helpful. How refreshing. Coffee and ice tea came first. Coffee fresh and hot, tea strong brewed and flavorful. My wife ordered a Spinach and Cheddar omelet with fries, and an English muffin. I ordered the eggs Benedict with grits. The food came hot and was delicious. The spinach was fresh, the omelet fluffy. The fries crisp and not greasy. The English muffin was lightly toasted. My Eggs Benedict were great. The eggs poached perfectly, the Canadian bacon was tasty and very lean. The hollandaise sauce was light and creamy. Grits were hot and smooth, not clumpy or instant. Throughout our meal Cassidy came back multiple times to refill coffee or ask what else we needed. Didi was also very helpful. Although the room was getting full by the time we left we never felt rushed. My wife and I both commented this was one of the most pleasant, casual, and satisfying meal we have had in a long time. The food was great but the service was outstanding, not just by our waitresses but by the entire staff around us. I stopped here for breakfast the day before the St. Augustine half marathon. The diner was pretty full but I easily found a spot at the bar. I ordered egg whites, hash browns and probably the best chocolate chip and blueberry pancakes I've had in a while. I really liked that I was able to substitute the toast for a pancake at no additional cost. It was also very affordable! Will be returning next time I'm in town! read more

This place is new and very busy but as our group was waiting for our table I noticed that they really have the flow down right. Turning tables quickly while being friendly and not making the experience seem rushed. Food was good. As expected for a diner. Had the veggie burger with tabouli. I was then informed they were making more tabouli and it would be a few minutes until more was ready so I ordered onion rings instead. Three people checked in with me to see if I wanted something else instead of the tabouli! I got the onion rings and they still brought me a side of the tabouli to. Very nice service.
