We can not recommend the chicken and waffles enough. We all agreed it is some of the best prepared fried chicken we have ever had. The crispy flavorful skin perfectly encrusted the tender juicy chicken. The Belgian waffle comes with a strawberry butter that would be perfect on its own. Combined with the chicken? Incredible. Then there was the Yo' Holla French toast. This fruity decadent platter is surprisingly light on the pallet, and not too sweet. We could have ordered this as a dessert for the table to share. Huge diner portions and high quality food. We each had the Bold City Burger which has Provelone cheese, caramelized onions, bacon, sausage, fried jalapeños, lettuce, tomato and garlic aioli and we ordered without the brioche bun. There was just enough fat in the burger to be flavorful but not at all greasy. The flavors we're all very well balanced. For the included side we each ordered the sautéed vegetables which included a generous portion of Zucchini and Yellow Squash. Great flavor and cooked just enough to retain their firmness. I also ordered a side salad (for only $2.89) which was large and included a hard boiled egg as well as everything else I would expect. The service was fast and friendly. I will definitely eat there again when visiting St. Augustine. read more

Metro Diner is one of those staples that has an awesome breakfast selection and is always reliable. I was visiting St Augustine with friends and we came here for breakfast Saturday around 10am. It was a little busy and we had about a 20 minute wait. For breakfast I got two mimosas (under $3!) and the breakfast sandwich. There was a minor issue with my order and not only did our server handle it quickly but the manager on shift came by our table to apologize. They remedied the problem quickly and through my check. Ok... though it's relatively simple diner food, I LOVE this place. Everything is made from scratch and is very tasty. I would give it 5 stars, but I have to set off the 1-2 star experience with the service I just had. Didn't help that I was famished. My waitress, Lamara, I believe was the reason that the experience I just had was so subpar. I hate to call somebody out in a public forum, but, as a former waiter, I am very forgiving, and have a hard time leaving less than 20% even when I have issues with the service, but in this case I think I'll make an exception. To begin with, it took a while to get noticed. When I finally did, I ordered a peach tea. She asked if I wanted it sweet. I said sure! I got regular peach tea...kind of what I usually expect, when I order a fruit flavor tea, but I never got any sugar with it...and I could seldom find her, or get her attention on the floor. Eventually, I ordered a soup and a shepherd's pie. I ordered the soup because I was so hungry, I needed something NOW. Waited and waited for my soup. Never came. Maybe 20 minutes later, I got my entree. Reminded her then about the soup. She may have apologized (I'm sure she did), but I only recall her saying she forgot about it and later saying she didn't charge me for it. Well, DUH! She was entirely absent the entire time I was there. I kept looking for her, and on the rare occasion, when I spied her, she didn't look my way. This is a basic waitering skill. It's called multi-tasking. You should be constantly vigilant of all your tables. Waited forever for her to come back to order some dessert. She came by, and didn't ask anything...just quickly came by and dropped off the check. She came back by fairly promptly (for her, I mean). I said I wanted dessert. "Oh," she responded. So I ordered the bread pudding. Didn't ask me if I wanted anything with it -- like a scoop of ice cream. It's called upselling, and it's another basic waitering skill. I would've said yes. Brought me the bread pudding and the new check. I would've found a way to try to make poor service up to the customer -- more than just an apology...pay for dessert or whatever. No such skill/common sense. Wanted to leave her a note saying: "I looked for you through the whole meal. Now you look for the tip!" I have only ever given one bad review here before. I generally believe if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything. I just think this lady needs a wake-up call. As I said, I love this place and will be back because the food is really good, and the prices are reasonable, but if you want to get a lousy review from me, you just found out how. read more

It was quite crowded but that doesn't bother me since it usually means that the food/service is great. I rated this location a 3 because it definitely has less than the stellar service received at other stores I've been to before this one opened. This also includes the food which many times left me shocked at how much different the quality was and how its was cooked and prepared. I stopped going for a few months but my guy friend convinced me to try again. I've seen a lot of improvement and found out why. I would share but it's hearsay but I found enough truth to believe it myself and I've seen what improvements has happened since. Five stars for the chicken and waffles! From reading reviews, I was a little worried that ordering the full portion of chicken and waffles and crabcake eggs benedict would be too much for us, so I suggested getting half portion of chicken waffles. The hubby said no. Boy was I glad we got the full portion because it was the best chicken and waffles! The fried chicken was amazingly crispy and tasted similar to Korean fried chicken. It was served with a spicy sauce that the waitress made by pouring maple syrup and adding a drop of tabasco. Maybe she thought we couldn't take spicy? I had to add a lot more tabasco for it to actually be spicy, but it was delicious with the fried chicken. The waffles were good and the strawberry butter was out of this world. I need to learn to make strawberry butter or buy it somewhere. The crabcake eggs benedict was also nice and perfectly cooked. Portion sizes were large but it wasn't too much food for us. Monday morning while staying over in St. Augustine, I stopped here to get breakfast before running some errands. I think I saw the advertisement that this was where the locals went to eat. I sat at the bar instead of a table since I was by myself and the waitress was very attentive. I ordered the Bissell breakfast ($9.49) and a coffee ($1.99). I ordered my eggs over medium and when I got them, one was cooked perfect and one was over cooked as there was no runny yolk at all. The worst part about the eggs and why I'm giving them three stars is because they were covered in that fake butter they use to cook with. Besides tasting horrible it gave me a stomach ache. I also had bacon, home fries and a short stack of pancakes. There was so much food I was only able to take a couple of bites of the pancakes. Portions are large - the huevos rancheros was enough for 3 people (and looks like breakfast nachos). On our second trip I was debating what to order as the chipped beef on homefries looked really good, but seemed like it'd be too heavy.
