I used to come here every Sunday for chicken and waffles. They were always very fresh hot & crispy, not overcooked nor undercooked. Same with the waffles. Everything was very delightful. I stopped coming here maybe 2-4 months ago because of the inconsistency of freshness and flavor of the food. I've come to think maybe they started frying the chicken at a lower temperature than before because the chicken is now very very oily. The chicken I had before had very little oil, which is expected because it's fried. also its not very crispy anymore, Waffles are still alright-ish? Waitstaff are nice and helpful, I hope to comeback sometime soon and test the chicken and waffles out once more. And depending on that I might change my review. read more

My friend has been trying to get me to try this place for quite some time. I finally got a chance to today and I definitely plan to come back. I ordered the chicken and waffles. First of all, you get half of a chicken. They mix a little concoction of syrup and hot sauce at your table when you order it but I added more hot sauce. It also comes with a strawberry butter for the waffle. I've had chicken and waffles from many restaurants and this was definitely one of my favs! My husband is a creature of habit. Usually I am the one insisting we try different places when we're in a new city-especially unique local businesses. But when he found out there was a Metro Diner near us, he insisted we eat there "to see if it's as good as the ones in Jacksonville." What can I say but yes, it is as good as the Metro Diner in Jax! There's just something about being able to go into a restaurant and order your favorite dish and it'll taste the exact same way wherever you happen to be! They did have a breakfast specialty item that I haven't seen in our local MD-Strawberry Cheesecake Waffles. He and I really enjoyed that dish. I hope our local MD has it if not now, then soon! I would definitely order it again! Metro Diner never lets us down. I love the consistency and the reliability that the food we order will always made the same way, and with quality ingredients. But I also love that on top of the items on the menu, there's always a Specialty dish (sometimes it's DISHES) that's brand new. To begin, I rarely write reviews and especially negative ones but after several really poor experiences at this establishment, I felt compelled to write. The food quality is average at best. I've tried several things over different visits and while it looks good in the menu, it somehow never delivers. Most of the breakfast food is just a notch above Waffle House in terms of flavor or presentation. My kids like pancakes so I have sucked it up so they can enjoy their dinner. The last few times, even the kids complained about the food quality. My biggest complaint is the wait staff. I've been on multiple occasions where it took forever to get someone to take our order, or once the food was delivered we never saw the waiter for an extended period... no coffee or water refills, no check-in or anything. Tonight, I decided to stop for dinner on the way home from work. The diner is close to my office so I thought "sure, it's close so why not?". I went in and was asked to sit at the bar that faces the grill. The girl tried to convince me this was something amazing by saying.. "look, you can see them prepare your food". Ok, whatever. After the hostess seated me I waited patiently for over 10 minutes as waiters walked past, stood at the hostess station with their hands in their pockets, cooks peered at me from across the glass and no one made any effort to take my drink order, inquire if anyone else had helped me, etc. The restaurant was probably only about 25% full and there were plenty of people on hand. I finally just got up and left the restaurant. I've decided to vote with my feet as well and not go back and waste my time or money any further. I know restaurants hire lots of young people and I get that but it's a complete failure of the management to let something like this happen. read more

Metro Dinner is a nice break from the typical brunch/breakfast chains I've grown tired of in the area. It gives off diner vibes but isn't a true diner. I've had their fruity waffle 3 times in a couple of months....yes I want to try other things on their menu but its just too tasty and fresh I haven't been able to pull myself away just yet. I love that they always have a steady flow of patrons but not too much that there's ridiculous waits or any of that. The staff are all sweet and helpful...very down to earth overall. Normally my family has not had a bad meal at Metro Diner however this afternoon was an exception. The recommended chicken salad though not bad, was flavorless. It contains sliced grapes and could have used more and yet still avoid it from being too sweet. The fish and chips... fish was good as provided coleslaw not bad but the fries were over cooked and had a chemical taste to it. My daughters kids chicken and waffles was only ok. Her chicken was dry and seasoned with too much pepper. I have had the adult sized chicken and waffles which is great and the metro club too which I also recommend. Ok, so I had high expectations from this place, considering the rest of the reviews. I really wanted to like this place, but our first time experience didn't really live up that. First off, our waitress seemed really out of it. She wasn't very friendly and seemed in a rush to get things going with our table. Since it was our first time, we decided to order food items that were a "fan fave". My husband got the holy davoli burger, while I got the fish and chips. The waitress asked how my husband wanted his patty cooked and he asked for medium well, and when he got it, of course it wasn't, it was pretty rare. And it was pretty soggy by the time it got to us. And with my fish, it was completely bland. I couldn't taste anything. My order also came with cole slaw and it was dry. There was barely any dressing on it. Metro Diner offered Christmas dinner through a caterer. The process was simple and efficient. The food was excellent. The portion size was generous. The turkey was moist with plenty of gravy. I had the corn and mashed potatoes while my husband ordered the corn and macaroni and cheese with the ham. After we said water and placed our order we waited 20 minutes to receive half the order and another 10 minutes to remaining order. After finishing the meal we waited 10 minutes to receive a check which I had to alert s server passing by we were ready to leave abs wanted our check. I have been here 3 times now and while each time the portion size are quite good, the temperature of the food have not been consistent. My daughter ordered the chicken and waffles-quite good as it was freshly made and the strawberry butter to die for-the other 2 dishes were barely warm when they were all served together. The last time there the soup my father ordered was so salty, but the cheddar potato they replaced it with was great. I love the fact they make a lot of everything in house. Do not believe the hype! So the wife and I had breakfast this morning after seeing the reviews. We both went with high expectations only to have them come crashing down. This is another example that I think maybe the people that write the reviews are so overwhelmed by the amount of food served they over rate the quality. Seriously there was enough leftover on my plate that I scrapped off to easily have 2 Bagels toasted and just use the leftovers to top it. My experience today at Metro Diner was okay but nothing impressive which disappointed me because I really wanted to love this place. I've read all the rave reviews and heard great word of mouth from friends but my wife and I agreed our experience this afternoon was just average. We arrived around 2PM, there was plenty of space available in the private parking lot shared with the rest of the businesses in the shopping center. The lot appeared in good repair and was free of debris. We were greeted by the hostess immediately upon entering and asked our preference for a booth or table. We were escorted to a booth right away. I appreciate the booth table not being stationary so we could move it slightly to make ourselves more comfortable. The table was clean and properly stocked with condiments and seasonings. Our server (I think her name was Carrie) arrived immediately after the hostess departed. She took our drink orders and asked if we'd been there before. We hadn't so she explained that anything on the menu could be ordered at any time of the day. I appreciated that she also offered some suggestions and pointed out some of the most popular items when I asked for suggestions. My wife ordered the ever-popular Fried Chicken & Waffle while I went for an item on the specials board, the Texan Burger with french fries. The food arrived quickly, everything appeared fresh and hot. My Texan Burger featured a humongous eight ounce hamburger patty with cheddar, bacon, grilled onions, lettuce and tomato on a brioche bun. It was advertised with BBQ sauce which I asked to be omitted and replaced with mayonnaise and ketchup, they were happy to comply. It was cooked a perfect medium as I specified. The burger was pretty good, not the best I've had as it was a little bland but adding a bit of salt and pepper really perked it up and made it quite enjoyable. The french fries were hot and crispy with a soft interior, delicious in an ordinary way. I really enjoyed the dill pickle spear garnish. It was cool and crisp and delicious, a nice touch. On to the much-anticipated Fried Chicken & Waffle I've read so many rave reviews on. Carrie had previously brung maple syrup and hot sauce to the table which she mixed in a small bowl for dipping the chicken and waffle. The waffle was a big hit with that amazing strawberry butter and maple syrup. The large waffle was quartered and stacked on the plate, it was hot and crispy yet still soft and moist on the inside with a wonderful flavor. It was truly delicious, a real delight. The chicken, not so much. It was a real let down, not delicious at all. It was hot but seemed to be fried way too long, to the point where it had a dark appearance and some of the breading had burned off. It was dry and when you bit into it a lot of the breading was beyond crispy and just kind of crumbled into dust. For $15.49 I expected much better. We thought about sending it back but that's not really in our nature. I'm pretty sure this was an anomaly because there's no way people could be raving about this chicken if it's like this every time. I may give it another try another time just to satisfy my curiosity. Service was excellent throughout our meal, Carrie was professional and friendly and always there when we needed her. She was energetic and delightful. My only quibble (I'm guessing this is just the way Metro Diner does this) is that when the bill was presented it wasn't on a tray but rather just placed on the table. It's not a big deal but when there are wet spots on the table it can make a bit of a mess of the paper. The men's restroom was clean and properly stocked though it only accommodates one person at a time. Everything functioned as intended however I would have liked there to have been disposable toilet seat covers available. Another sore spot for me is the toilet paper dispenser which is mounted in such a fashion that one needs to be somewhat of a contortionist to unroll the paper while seated on the commode, at least for a big guy like me. Overall, I find Metro Diner to be okay. It's certainly good enough and has enough potential to entice me back at some point to try other items and perhaps revisit the fried chicken. 3.5 stars rounding down to 3 with room for improvement. I will return at some point and will adjust my rating if merited. read more
