Huge dinner place quite cozy but a little cold. We are upstairs around 8 past the dinner crowd. Had a nice guitar player playing some songs. We ordered a wedge salad was the best food we ate out of our dinner. I ordered the special baby back ribs with mac. Sauce was not very authentic and the ribs were dry didn't pop out. Taylor our server was so great! She has such good recommendations. The friendly hosts, and bar staff started the meal off with a pleasant attitude. We were able so sit outside and enjoy the summer night. We ordered the calamari, the chipotle sauce is so good! Taylor suggested the crab cakes in the first picture and they were very rich and balanced well with the Cesar and pancetta Brussel sprouts. My co worker got the New York Strip Topped with Demi-Glace and added the Cajun goat cheese crust. Hands down the best steak either of us have had. It's hard to see under all the onion stings in picture two. We ended the night with both the berry cheese cake (not pictured) and the chocolate torte. Great way to spend the night after work! Very nice family owned restaurant, has been here for years , food is from scratch and well made . Staff was excellent ( I was with my 79 yo mom who is disabled and often demanding /picky and they bent over backwards to meet her requests . Saturday night date night. As we walked in, I could hear a nearby waitress describing the nights special. "Béarnaise sauce and fried mushroom cap" is all I heard. She had me at Béarnaise. We ate inside in one of the back dining areas and of course, I ordered the special with a starter salad. She had me at Brie on that one. Spring greens, caramel pecans bits, thin slices of Granny Smith, vinaigrette dressing and of course, Brie. The special was 2 medallion, one with a red wine peppercorn the other with... yep, Béarnaise, a medium sized fried mushroom cap and loaded baked potato. MmmmMmmm! Washed it all down with a red wine sangria muddled with fresh fruit. My husband ordered the lamb chops with a Mount Carmel beer glaze and Caprese salad with balsamic reduction. Man, was that good and the bones were neatly cleaned. Beautiful display! He ordered the rosemary fizz. Gin and tonic with simple syrup, infused with rosemary. Tasty. read more

Food was ok, if a little pricey (read on). What really took this rating down was that the music was WAY too loud. Six of us were on the 2nd floor, and only two other tables had customers seated. We could barely hear the server. We had the mussels (ok, nothing special), the Meritage Burger (very good), and the French Dip (also very good), one cocktail, and iced tea. With tip, $84. Warning - the sweet potato fries looked like they were seasoned with salt, but it was actually sugar. This was not mentioned in the description. I'm diabetic, and would've appreciated a better description on the menu than just "sweet potato fries". I've not had them sprinkled with sugar anywhere else, and had to give them to one of my dinner companions. read more

A total miscommunication on behalf of the waiter left my friend with a sore hand smashed in their elevator. She told the waiter that she had a reservation with a friend (me). He told her it was "downstairs." Not knowing that he was referring to the floor they were on, she told him she had a bum ankle and couldn't use steps. He showed her the elevator which took her down to the basement. She came up and, while trying to tell another couple that there wasn't anything downstairs, she got her hand smashed in the door. The staff didn't want to hear how they could better inform their customers about where the "downstairs" really was. Relative to the area, this place is pretty expensive. Coming here for dinner, you will probably be looking at spending $30-$50 a person. I got the fish tacos with a side of sweet potato fries coupled with some white sangria. Fish tacos were slightly spicy and came on a large flour tortilla. Could have used some more robust flavoring, but was very average. Sweet potato fries were great, but came with Heinz ketchup.. for a small $5 side, it would have been nice to have some house made aioli or mayo mix. The sangria was my favorite part; large in size and flavor. Huge wine glass filled with strawberries and white sangria. My friend ordered the red sangria with blackberries, she did not end up finishing the drink due to the bitter flavor. read more

Ordered a carryout for lunch. Got the potato soup and mixed green salad with ranch. This is the BEST POTATO SOUP in the city. It doesn't have chunks of potatoes they are pureed. It is smooth going down, has some garlic in it, you don't even need the cheese and bacon on top, but added anyway. Wound up here after thee restaurant we booked (Vincenzos) abruptly closed for lack of help. Very pleasant experience. Really more of a neighborhood bar and hangout than a destination restaurant. Ate upstairs which has a nice bar and a couple of private rooms as well as a main dining area. Comfortable tables, well spaced out. Good service, attentive & prompt. We weren't rushed and were able to converse easily. Good salads ..the 4 of us split 2 adequately. The main courses were good although we thought the bbq rib special was a bit dried out. Fish entrees were good as was a huge hamburger that had to be disassembled to get it into our mouth. Reasonable prices. Decent free parking. Staff was all masked and friendly. My wife and I came here for Valentine's day and left disappointed. We decided to try the new location because of positive experience at their previous location but the new Meritage is a shadow of its former self. From cold side items and undercooked risotto to the oddly loud sports bar like atmosphere ending with a dry chocolate cake with a grainy and to sweet icing. We grew tired of sending food back. Nice remodel! Salads were pretty good, you can get a half size of any salad with your entree for $5! We both had 6oz filet and twice baked potato, the potato was huge and not really that tastey, she liked hers though, our steaks came out almost perfect so good job on that! And then came the Creme Brule, it wasn't set up so it was just like pudding, and they had way too much sugar on the top, was like a brittle on top! All together not a bad dinner though! read more

Independent restaurant and somewhat pricey, but stellar yet relaxed service and a creative, fresh menu makes it worth the extra dime. Met a former colleague for lunch and we both agreed that the place is a winner. Why 5 stars? Beautiful yet easygoing environ, good ambiance, great pace of service, outstanding food options. We both had sautéed walleye and salads. Creativity in their menu; great breads for munching prior to the main course. Food was good enough to be memorable a month later. Will definitely return for dinner sometime soon! Cant rave enough about this place, and defy you to find a better restaurant in Glendale, which is filled with plenty of solid choices. Last night I had one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. Good food at a restaurant is important, of course, but just as important is the ambiance and the service. Meritage didin't disappoint in any of those areas. Meritage used to be the Gas Light Cafe which was nice. The new owners have kicked it up a notch. Meritage is a converted house in historic Glendale. The decor is contemporary but cozy. There was a guitar player performing in the bar area where we had a short wait while waiting for a booth. The dining room is small but doesn't feel overly crowded and isn't noisy. My wife and I were celebrating our 22nd wedding anniversary and wanted to splurge a little. We started with the scallops which were prepared to perfection. I don't know why so many people have trouble sautéing scallops which should be quite easy. But, they are often overcooked or don't have enough color on them. Ours were prepared to perfection, not overly done, and with a wonderful chili sauce. The general manager recommended an excellent bottle of wine that I was not familiar with and we loved it. My wife had the wedge salad and I had the Caesar salad. The wedge salad was great, if you're a fan of bleu cheese (which we both are). It was loaded with bleu cheese dressing with crumbles of bleu cheese a bit of a balsamic vinegar reduction. I'm a traditionalist when it comes to Caesar salad. I did notice the menu said it came with bacon. But, I skipped over the fact it came with red onions, too. In my opinion, it wasn't really a Caesar salad. But, it was good. For the main course, my wife had a fish we can't recall the name of. It was from South America and was really good. It was most similar to grouper. I had been to Merigae for lunch once and had a fish sandwich, I do recall that fish. It was golden tile and it was the best fish sandwich I've ever had. So, if you go to Meritage and you like fish, try the fish of the day even if you don't recognize the name of the fish. My wife's fish was pan fried and served over a bed of rice with asparagus. I had the prime rib which was done to perfection. That came with a loaded baked potato. For dessert, we were both stuffed. But, we had to try to the creme brûlée. Frankly, I'm not a huge fan of creme brûlée except for the caramelized sugar on top. When it came we both sighed because the portion was huge. But, we ate the whole thing. I think it was the best creme brûlée I've had anywhere. The service was excellent. I like the little things like they kept our water glasses full and our server, instead of telling us to keep our forks between each course, brought out new silverware for every course. The prices are reasonable for such good food and a wonderful atmosphere. read more

Stopped in here for a weekday lunch after a business call in the area. The ambiance was quiet and a bit up scale-great for a business lunch, meeting friends, or a date. Our server was attentive and perceptive in allowing us to stay a bit an catch up. I was a bit hesitant going in, assuming it would be a $20 lunch based on the menu I peeped quickly before heading in this direction, but the $9.99 lunch special saved me-I had a sizable bowl of chili and well-portioned sandwich which left me feeling full. The ingredients were high quality and the lunch left me able to continue working in the afternoon (you know those lunches where you feel gross and like you need a nap? this isn't it!) So glad this restaurant is in the neighborhood! It answers all the needs: cool, easy going bar and nice, groovy dining room that's not too crowded or loud. Good lighting, good sound dampening and good service. Queso and flour tortilla chips were yummy and the stuffed mushrooms were decadent and tasty for our apps. We love the menu (not too many choices, just something for everyone and all done well), and we three diners had salmon, prime rib and scallops. Always love the braised spinach and mashed potatoes. Sides and salads all first class, too. Desserts were creme brulee and blueberry pie with extra ice cream. Again, no complaints, ate every bite! Add a few cocktails and wine, finsih with coffees and dessert: it was another wonderful experience all handled so well by our charming and efficient waiter. This restaurant is COZY and COMFORTING. Warm and inviting decor, friendly knowledgeable waiters who can tell you all the dishes and ingredients by memory, and modern dark wood/leather furniture. Our waitress asked us if we wanted lemon in our water which is always a huge bonus point for me personally, it is a sign that the little details matter. I appreciate that this restaurant is an independent and local business as well! We were here for dinner and ordered the steamed mussels in a white wine sauce which come out hot with pieces of bread as well, perfect for dipping into the flavorful sauce. I had the filet mignon which was prepared perfectly. My wife had the pan-seared scallops which were also cooked just right. Went there last night with my wife for a nice night out away from the kids. I have to stay, from start to finish, this was probably the most enjoyable meal we have had in a very long time. My only negative was that the restaurant was quite noisy. Perhaps some better acoustic tiling would help in that regard. We started with the queso dip, which was excellent. The homemade chips were still warm and the dip was great. Next, I had the French Onion Soup. Probably the best I've had in years. Nice and cheesy and the broth was very flavorful. For our entries, my wife had the 12oz Prime Rib and she claimed (being a prime rib connoisseur) that this might have been the best prime rib she'd ever had. From the few bites she let me have, I couldn't disagree. I have their special, which featured Thait Glazed Salmon, Rock Lobster Tail and Pan Seared Scallops. Honestly, of the three, I was least looking forward to the lobster tail since I typically prefer main lobster to the rock variety, but it was absolutely delicious! The salmon was also wonderful, as long as you didn't overdo the dipping sauce. The scallops were prepared perfectly and were nice and buttery without being overdone. No desert, but we were both stuffed by then. Our waitress provided fantastic service and we will definitely be returning! read more

Came here last night for dinner with my mom. I remember when the space used to be the gas light cafe and it was very crowded and the bar was right at the entrance area. Well since the new owners have taken over the space and named it Meritage it looks wonderful with curry colored paint on the walls and nice wood tables and black booths with some paintings on the wall. Upon entering the restaurant we were greeted by the general manager and he showed us to our table, our server came right over and filled up our water glasses and went over the specials and highlighted the wine list. We agreed upon splitting a bottle of Other from the Meritage section after a suggestion from our server. After looking at the menu I decided on getting the mussels in a white wine sauce for my app and for my main I ordered the bistro steak sandwich, my mom ordered the melted brie and tomato sandwich. My mussels were very good, I will say however there was to much mussel sauce in the bowl and could have been reduced down. The flavor was good and the toasted garlic bread served was a nice touch to sop up some of the sauce. The bistro steak sandwich was very good and served on a hoagy roll and cooked to the temperature I asked with some creamy horseradish and melted cheese and even grilled onions and the sandwich was served with fries and au jus sauce. My mom's sandwich was also very good as I got a bite in, the brie cheese was melted perfectly and had tomatoes on sourdough bread, usually it is served with potato salad, but my mom substituted the Meritage salad. As for dessert, another server came over and explained the house made mango cheesecake and then I wanted to order it. It was served with a raspberry coulis, very fresh and perfect for a hot night. My daughter and I needed a girls night out. Wanted something delicious, but not pretentious or fussy. Meritage fits the bill perfectly. We both ordered the prime rib special. It came so quickly which was perfect for us. It was late and she was hungry! On the downside, our prime rib was much fattier than expected. Still delicious and prepared as requested. Our sides were also fantastic. Our server was kind and appropriately attentive and friendly. The musician in the bar was a nice touch. He was talented! I didn't share his taste in music, but he was still good. Friendly hint: watch out for the utility pole in the middle of the parking lot. Can be a pricey trip to the body shop. read more

Warning: They are moving locations, so the location attributes may stop applying in the near future. It is a nice place to bring a date. I suggest dressing up, even though I showed up stag in a T-shirt & jeans & they took me in. Take the back room (which I did), as the front plays music & the sound surrounds you so much that you wouldn't be able to hear your date. The darkness of the backroom gives it a cozy, intimate setting, perfect for one-on-one conversation, especially the booth I sat at. The food was okay. The price was expensive $27 before tax & tip, but the salmon I had was some of the best that I have had in a while. read more

On Friday, September 23, a group of us met for the monthly Happy Mouth Supper Club outing. It was Wendy's month to select, and she chose MERITAGE (which rhymes with "heritage"), a new restaurant that has opened in Glendale. It was a great selection, and we (Ted, Tracy, Carrie, Ron, Terry, Julie, Jay, Wendy, and me) very much enjoyed the food. They offer "classic food with a twist", and have kept the menu small and reasonably simple, but flourishes appear here and there as the "twist". The classic Steamed Mussels in White Wine Sauce features a couple pieces of nice bread (however, the bread should be served alongside -- rather than soaking in the wine sauce and getting soggy), and the Grilled Brie Sandwich is outstanding with it's smear of balsamic reduction on the plate (if you happen to find the tomato soup on the menu, it is a natural pairing with this sandwich!). The Fried Eggplant and Zucchini is surprisingly light, and the roasted garlic aioli compliments the crisp, fresh vegetables nicely. A previous visit, I tried the Bistro Steak Sandwich, which was cooked properly and tasted nice, but the large vein of sinew running through the steak made it chewy and slightly difficult to eat (this is to be expected with this particular cut of meat, but perhaps the kitchen could jaccard the steak before cooking). The fries were fresh, crispy, and very tasty -- a treat. We found their selection of wine to be very nice, but were surprised at the limited number of wines by the glass, especially considering the name of the place (meritage is a type of wine, "Bordeaux-style without actually being Bordeaux"). I hope in the future to see additional wines offered by the glass. However, we found pleasant choices by the glass. We stayed for dessert and Wendy & I enjoyed a piece of their Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting. Nicely executed, with a thick layer of sweet frosting on top of dense carrot cake. The only thing missing, one of my dining companions noted, was the little frosting carrot decoration! It was a good Happy Mouth, and we have high expectations for MERITAGE. read more

Yeesh. My husband and I nipped over to Meritage for a quick dinner and man was it disappointing. We got there around 5:30 and the place was pretty dead, but it also seemed overstaffed. When heading down from the bathroom (on the second floor), one of the staff was racing up the stairs and dropping the f-bomb in a really off-putting way. So really 1/5 stars for atmosphere. I ordered fish tacos. The filling was just fine but the actual taco was cold! My husband said it looked like they just opened a bag of tacos from the store and threw the ingredients in. My husband enjoyed his burger and fries, and the bread was nice and warm. The icing on the mediocre cake of this dinner was their creme brulee, which came highly recommended: another issue with temperature! Underneath the barely browned surface the filling was lukewarm, and NOT SET. As in, I took a bite and then the missing space was filled with liquid. When I informed the waiter and asked him to take it off our bill, he did, but did not offer anything as compensation or to apologize, or even ask if we wanted to order something else. Wow. Did I mention this place isn't cheap?? We walked away spending over $40 on two entrees and a beer, and the meal just did not cut it. read more

Typically I enjoy dining here with small groups. I would not recommend for large group or preplanned menu. With a preplanned menu no deletions are able to be made for food allergies and steak cooking temps can't be increased. (From medium well to well) A steak that was ordered, menu said medium well, arrived rare. Blood covered the plate and the sides on the plate when it was cut into. When patron asked for the steak and side to be replaced the same steak after being "cooked some more " and side were returned on a new plate. How and where, during COVID, do you recooked a steak that has already been handled and cut into be considered acceptable to return to a patron. Along with the same side that was covered in blood. My bill had to be corrected to have an item removed. When it was returned the service charge for a large group had been increased from 18% to 20%. The service charge increased even though my bill decreased. I guess someone thought I wouldn't notice. Others in the group had varying service charges. Some with higher bills had significantly lower service charges. After dining here many times, I would only recommend for parties of less than 6. Past visits with groups of 4-5 have gone well with to issues. read more

Ever wonder why you *didn't* listen to the little voice in your head telling you there's a reason why the restaurant has a sign saying 'immediate seating available' out front, and it's probably NOT a good one? I convinced myself and my friends that this place was an undiscovered gem and, given some of the reviews here, you'd think it was. It's NOT. Problems we had: a) Bar screw ups. A member of our party asked for a mixed drink. First time it came out there was a *major* ingredient missing and the glass was half full. The replacement was okay, but the second one ordered had a different taste and clearly had been mixed using different portions, which is just...wrong. b) Fish special. For some reason, one dinner came out *several minutes* after everyone else's. Not a little later, the rest of the table -who had been told to please go ahead and start - were halfway done with their dinners and one pretty much done when the meal came out. Then when it came out... nothing special about the dish at all, very mediocre. Honestly have had significantly better at mini-chains like Bravo. c) DRY food. Steaks were served with huge pats of butter, which two members of our party removed. Underneath the steaks were very dry. And one was rare! And the salmon was over cooked as well. The only good thing were the salads, fresh and very tasty, and the service, our waiter was fantastic (hence two stars). However neither of these outweigh the deficiencies in the food. We don't be back. And next time I'll listen to that little voice. read more

This is my favorite lunch spot! The lunch menu is bountiful and ever changing. The salads, vegetables, and entrees are super fresh and delicious. The menu is sophisticated, but not stuffy. The same can be said about the decor and atmosphere. It's upscale, but quaint and comfortable. The wait staff is always friendly and knowledgable. I've never been here for dinner, but would like to sometime. It seems like a great date place for a week night or even a weekend. Historic Glendale is such a neat area! read more
