We received a recommendation for Merit Moving Systems from a neighbor who was very happy with their move. We hired Merit Moving Systems to pack and move our belongings to a storage unit in July 2017. John Horist gave us a very professional walk-thru of our home, taking many notes, and sent us a written quote within one day via email. The price was more than fair and included insurance. On moving day, our crew chief Manuel and his two crew members arrived on time and got to work immediately. They were friendly, but professional, quick and efficient. They never stopped moving the entire day except for a short lunch break. Any time we happened to see one of them or pass by them, they always had a smile for us. Our storage unit was a bit smaller than it should have been, but they fit everything in like a puzzle....it was truly amazing! I recently moved with Merit from Fort Worth to Brownsville. My coordinator, Shellie, was very helpful and communicated well and I was happy with her performance. My only complaint is that the local moving company that was selected to unload and rebuild my furniture was difficult to work with. I even had to call Shellie to get them to assemble my belongings as per the agreement as they initially refused. Shellie got them to do but it made a hectic day a bit more stressful. read more

This is the second time I have used Merit Moving Systems and I will never use anyone but them!! Head mover Ibys and his helper, Jose, were prompt, professional, and respectful. By that, I mean that they treated every one of my possessions as if they were their own. And these guys hustled!!! I was going from an upstairs apartment to a downstairs apartment and they were literally running up and down the stairs. Ibys even suggested where I put my furniture, which was a huge help. Even more important, when I unpacked everything, nothing was broken or damaged in the slightest way. This firm over promises and under delivers. I was forced to take early delivery. not having housing my items went into storage. Because of that, when I finally did get them unpacked at home and found damages I WAS NOT COVERED!!! Not covered because I would have had to unpack every item in storage at time of delivery to maintain the triple insurance coverage I bought and paid for. WHAT A RIP! Frank promised to help every step of the way and disappeared after the initial boxes were delivered. The driver harassed me and tried bullying me. He was rude beyond belief. My wife and I recently moved from West Hollywood to Washington, DC and couldn't have had a better experience. Frank Buckley was incredibly helpful, responsive and worked with us to meet our budget. The three-man crew (I forget their names) they sent the day of the move was professional, friendly and treated our belongings with great care. The front office stayed in touch with us while our stuff was in transit. Our stuff arrived no worse for the wear. A few wrinkled boxes maybe, but this was a cross country move... We were concerned that the moving industry was full of shady companies when we began the process, but were pleased with Merit's service at every step of the way. This might read like a dummy post written by someone at Merit, and I'm not sure how I can prove that I'm legit, but hopefully your experience will be the same and you can post as much right below us. We had a horrible experience with Merit. We moved from LA to NYC and used their packing and moving services. They were rough with our items and lost about five boxes. They underestimated the amount of items we had and needed an overflow truck. I can only guess this is how our items were lost. They worked very hard but were not considerate. They also left a lower kitchen cabinet full of items that we had to have shipped to us by our old apartment manager. They did not label things correctly. The disassembly of our furniture was a joke - they would take everything apart and throw all the screws/nuts/bolts into a bag labeled "parts" without any explanation of which pieces they came from. The guys who reassembled them on the east coast just threw whatever screw they thought fit into whatever hole. We had very tall, industrial shelves hanging on by the wrong screws. Chairs that weren't assembled correctly. It was a pain and dangerous. Shelves were tipping out and chairs were wobbling. They didn't care to do it right and it took weeks to get a third party assembler to put it all back together. Some items were broken beyond repair as they tried to jam the wrong screws into places. They banged up our doors, put dents in our walls and dirtied our upholstered furniture with black marks and hand prints from all the dirt. They lost feet to cabinets and when I asked about the feet they told me it must've been lost from the start. My husband went into the moving truck and found the feet under moving blankets. They gave no f*cks about our stuff. They also would shake their heads yes at requests then do whatever they wanted. I left the mattresses in the sheets and asked to leave the sheets on so they were protected, then all I'd have to do on the other end is wash dirty sheets. They told me they would be careful, leave the sheets on and put the mattresses in plastic. Well, they took the sheets off, didn't have clean hands and our mattresses were covered in dirty handprints. No need for that to happen at all. And they did not reimburse for ruining the mattresses. We don't have spare change laying around to replace mattresses so we're stuck with dirty mattresses. A completely avoidable situation which I communicated about from day one while getting the quote. "Yes, no problem, our guys are very careful and will wash their hands before handling upholstered and fabric items." Bullsh*t. None of them cared at all. They just wanted to get the job done and did whatever they could to do it. They broke and cracked the Pax wardrobe. They didn't feel like taking it apart so wrapped it and moved it whole. Feet were broken off, doors cracked and bottoms split. We also had broken tables and chairs, broken desks and glass tops, broken mirrors and cracked lamps. It was a mess. Then we had to sit with the driver and go over every item that was moved and check off that it was "okay" but we hadn't even seen every item. I'm not sure who can unpack every box and unwrap every piece in 8 hours. I'd like to meet those superhuman people. When I circled and item or wrote "broken" on things I saw were broken, I got dirty looks and "well if you have to write that" and it was awkward. But yes, noting that our items arrived damaged is exactly what I did, I wasn't going to pretend everything was great. Getting reimbursed for the broken items took over three months and the process was awful. We've never had any follow up about the missing items. They told us they'd file a claim and then the company does a search. Never heard a word back. They make you feel like a nuisance and that you're wrong for trying to find your items. They seem nice on the phone but they give you the run around. Sandy could only help with X so they send you to Ketty who can only help with Y so you get sent to a "team" of United people somewhere in another state who are "overwhelmed and behind and doing the best they can" and first Brian helps you then won't answer your calls so then you're calling Dana and Mike and Brett and NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR CLAIM because there are 50 other customers with claims needing to be filed. Stay clear of Merit and United for any long distance moves. We've moved 8 times as a family and this was by far the worst move ever. And it should have been the easiest since we paid for all the premium services. I would've packed us but they insisted their packing was superior and our items would arrive undamaged. We also had an 8 week old baby so I thought it would be best to have them do the whole thing. I was wrong. If you want really nice people who don't give a crap about your crap, by all means hire them. I'm still mad I tipped. Wish I didn't but felt pressured. We should've gone with Bekins even tho they were more expensive. Lesson learned. United and Merit suck. read more

I used Merit for a move from Torrance, CA to Placerville, CA and was very happy with the professionalism from the sales rep (Frank) to the driver (different Frank) and his crew. By moving day I still did not have a place in Placerville to live, so when Frank made the drop in Placerville we had to do it at a mini-storage. On that day it was raining and he used a couple of guys out of the Sacramento area to unload the truck. On both ends it went as smoothly as possible. We recently sold our large house and moved into a smaller condo. At the time of the impending closing we weren't sure where we were moving to, so the original idea was to put our things in storage while we searched for our next home. As it turned out, a few days prior to the move we found the condo and I switched to "move to" location from our storage unit to the condo which in fact was much closer in terms of distance and drive time. A friend of my wife's recommended Merit as they had used them on 2 occasions and were happy with the service. I contacted the man they suggested who became our contact person and he was very responsive and polite and after doing a bit more research I decided to go with them. He gave me a written bid and told me that the final cost would not exceed the bid but very possibly it would be less depending on how fast they were able to complete the move. This bid was given when we were thinking that the stuff was going to the storage unit. However we later told him prior to the move, that the destination was changed to the condo. The guys that came to help pack and do the moving were all terrific. They worked quickly, took care with delicate things and overall did a wonderful job. Throughout the process, someone from the home office, contacted me on several occasions to make sure everything was going smoothly and to my satisfaction. All great so far. The reason this review is not a 5 star review is because at the very end, there was a glitch when it came to making the payment. One of the guys handed me a bill which was higher than the bid maximum. I challenged it and said I'd only pay the bid maximum because that was the deal. So he charged me for that amount and left. Several days later, the guy who was our contact person who gave me the bid in the first place called me up and asked for the additional money. He said that when we changed locations, the bid went up because it took more time to travel. This is totally false and I suggested if he check the difference in mileage between the two locations he'll see that the new destination was clearly much closer and took much less travel time. If anything, I probably should have been charged less. He claims he'd sent me a revised estimate prior to the job being done which I never saw. I'm not saying he was lying about that but I never saw it and if I had I would have challenged his assertion as to why he was increasing the cost. He got a little hot under the collar and was getting aggressive about it which left a sour taste about the whole experience which otherwise had been 5 star. I still recommend this company. Perhaps we had a communication problem which caused problem at the end. read more

Merit helped us move from Orange, Calif., to Texas. The move could not have gone better. John gave us a maximum price quote so even when the load came in a little heavy we were not charged more. Everything happened on a precise timeline. Sam, our driver was right on time and actually delivered our furniture a day early (which was nice because we were sleeping on an air mattress). Sam and his helpers (Johnny and another Sam) were great. They were careful with our furniture. They made sure everything was re-assembled. They put everything in its place. They were pleasant, hardworking young guys. While we are still sorting through our many boxes there are has been zero breakage so far -- which is pretty incredible. My experience with Merit was unpleasant. They were referred by Earl Noyes Van Lines in Maine (?). The Noyes company quoted what I thought was a next day move from SF to Bakersfield. On the day of the move--after I had totally torn my apartment down to ready for the move and 35 minutes late and counting after the 2 hour pick up window--I was told matter-of-factly by contracted out Merit that the delivery day would be 4 days later. When I said whoa, wait a minute, why 4 days? they gave me excuses about California labor law, vans driving slowly, you're not our only stop, blabity blah blah blah. I was F'd. How was I going to live in an empty apartment for 4 days? They begrudgingly said they'd pay for a single night's hotel stay because that would sinc with dates on the the vague and bloated quote for over 3 grand. I canceled the pick up and Merit was unfazed and unapologetic--easy come easy go. Avoid Merit Moving. read more

Found damaged large items, missing smaller items, and missing family heirloom (stolen?) that I am certain was loaded on truck.....never appeared at new location. The female associate(foreign anscestry) Merit employs to handle claims was VERY difficult to understand, and had NO solution other than offering minimal % allowed without launching full complaint and investigation. We had a great experience with Merit Moving Systems. Frank Buckley began by itemizing my mom's belongings, explaining materials involved (packing, wrapping, blankets) and going over each line item involved in arriving at an estimate. Sandy Hemphill kept us updated and noted any changes leading up to moving day. On moving day, Manuel or Manny (lead), Julio and Michael arrived a little after 8am as promised and promptly began loading after a brief survey. Manny kept the crew on task while packing and wrapping furniture and fragile items, with Julio doing a great job of packing the truck and securing items and Michael (the new guy) following Manny's experienced commands and encouraging advice. Just before we pulled out, Mom fell (she is 90 years old) on the way to our car, the crew was instantly there waiting to assist us if needed in getting her back on her feet. Michael especially, showed a lot of concern and was very relieved she was OK, telling her he always helps older people in his family. The care they demonstrated with her belongings also showed in their interactions with her. I must also single out Manny. He still shows enthusiasm (after many years in the industry) for his job evidenced by his professionalism ( he is VERY organized with packing materials) and his cheerful banter with the crew. Kevin and Sandy in the office listened to my needs -and they were very patient with me, despite my ever-changing plans! On moving day, Frank and his team quickly packed up our entire 4 bedroom house in the Bay Area and delivered half to our storage unit and half to our new home. All members of his crew spoke English. (Don't laugh, I've used movers where only the foreman spoken English and the rest of the crew spoke Russian or Spanish) Frank's teams in the Bay and LA were extremely professional and not one item was broken! I couldn't even believe it myself. Merit's initial quote might be higher than other companies, but in my experience those other companies have so many hidden fees and have broken or lost my items that they ended up costing more in the end! Each of us had decided on a piece of furniture that was picked up and delivered by Merit Moving Systems. There were three separate delivery locations, one was an upstairs apartment in Santa Ana, one was a home in Orange, and the last was a home in Long Beach. All three items were heavy, bulky furniture delivered at the agreed upon time, and by a professional driver and his helper. This is a great company, with the exception that they charged for mattress packing boxes that we didn't use. Normally I would say they get 4 stars for that, but because they did give us a refund for it, I am giving them 5 stars. Overall, this is a very good company that moved our belongings direct. We worked with Frank Buckley who was knowledgeable and extremely professional. He was the most professional sales rep out of all the moving companies from which we received estimates. I have since recommended him to others who need movers. Anyway, we moved about 700 miles. We got very lucky because our things were delivered the very next day! We know it isn't typical, but we were so happy the move was so fast! Merit contracts with United Van Lines, they don't use sub contractors either, which is what we wanted. Our belongings went from our house, to the truck, then on the road. No warehouses or double handling, which is how it should be. Merit does things the right way. Merit was so organized; every time we called them, they knew about our move and were on top of every small detail. Very impressive. The driver and all the crew were United Van Lines. Our driver, Brailey, was fabulous and kept in touch with us through the whole trip. Loading and unloading was done by him and other United people. Items carefully padded, wrapped and handled with so much care. Overall I would use this company again and I feel very comfortable recommending them. ********Tip about OTHER MOVING COMPANIES: Beware of those companies that pick up your stuff, put it in a warehouse, then deliver it two weeks later and charge you way more than they quoted you and you have no choice but to pay them $$$$ because you want your belongings. Those same companies give you appealing estimates over the phone and never come to your house. Usually they are the lowest estimate, but they charge you way more in the long run. Also beware of jerks like Bekins that say they will deliver 3-7 days, promise no items in a warehouse and a direct move. Then show up at your door on moving day and say,"Oh by the way a driver hasn't even been assigned to your move...it will be at least two weeks before your things are delivered.
