Merit Moving Systems handled our cross-country move on behalf of Mayflower, a National Moving Company. The two-bedroom condo move was from LA, California to the East Coast (New Hampshire). Merit gave us the quote with a virtual walkthrough (thanks Robert Borson) and Ellie Soltero, the Relocation Coordinator from Merit Moving Systems, held our hand throughout the process. Mayflower/Merit quote was transparent, very competitive with no hidden charges. They also addressed our many concerns (whether we need to disassemble some furniture - answer is no, they will do it and also re-assemble at the destination, or whether we need to get a city parking permit for the truck to park on a busy street - again no, Robert knew the area and Merit took care of it as needed). The move itself went smoothly. Carlos and crew loaded furniture and boxes from a two-bedroom condo in LA. They were efficient and very careful with the flooring by laying runners along the floor and stairs. After nine days of cross-county trip (dropping off in other locations along the way), the truck arrived to deliver the goods. The crew weren't as careful with the house (not enough protection for the flooring and the carpets like Carlos) and may have damaged some areas of the hardwood floor (hence one less star). But they were still efficient and good in placing the furniture and the boxes where they needed to be. Nothing was broken and we are happy with Merit Moving Systems and Mayflower. We hope we don't have to do another cross-country move again soon (or ever) but if we need to, we will call Merit Moving Systems/Mayflower again. Merit Moving Systems contracted Figueroa Relocation LLC to move my father. Never use this company! They contracted Figueroa Relocation LLC in Coachella, California to move my father. My father and I recently did an inventory of my mother's jewelry so we know exactly what was in the jewelry box. We do not have anyone else in the house. After the move, I noticed a watch was gone from my mother's jewelry box. I will leave it up to the public to draw their own conclusions. I would never use this company again and I would hope the public would never use both of these companies. read more

When quoting with merit for an out of state move I worked with Joe Almeida, I provided a list of all large items and their dimensions a video walk through in which I showed inside every cabinet, drawer, and closet in my home as well as a virtual walk through with Joe. He quoted me 36 boxes for all the miscellaneous stuff. This doesn't include mattress, tv, wardrobe. His quote was also much higher than others. I expressed that I thought 36 boxes was extremely conservative as I had downsized significantly in prep. He assured me that it's to make sure my price is no more than expected, but if I didn't use those boxes my price will be adjusted to reflect the volume actually moved. He also gave me the pitch about how merit is one of the good ones and every one with be a merit employee, and the trucks are their trucks etc. I decided to use merit based on these assurances. They did not need 17 of the 36 boxes, which I thought was great. But when talking with Ellie, I discovered that no what Joe told me is not accurate it is a firm quote and my cost will not be adjusted. So I paid for a significant overage for Joe's extreme conservatism and was misled about the companies practices Additionally, I found out that every person I interacted with was actually an independent that works for all moving companies, merit provides them t-shirts to make it appear they are direct employees. The trick was a third party contracting, the packers, the movers, everyone. So yet another misleading statement. The kicker, days after my move I got a bill from merit in which I actually need to pay them more than their "firm" quote despite the fact that they moved about 50% of the volume I was quoted. I got lucky with the contractor I was assigned and he did a great job. But I give merit no credit for this. They are not actually a moving company, they are brokers and I was directly misled. I would encourage you to look elsewhere. read more

Amazing experience from LA to NYC. My wife and I just completed this move, and we were so nervous about picking a moving company after hearing horror stories from friends about the estimates being wrong/things arriving late/broken items/etc. We booked the move with Mayflower, which is a national company that has ongoing business with regional moving companies to coordinate big moves like this. They connected us with their team in LA that is under Merit Moving Systems. Our experience with Merit was the exact opposite. From start to finish, we had an incredible experience working with Joe (our estimator) Ellie (our move coordinator) and Steve (our driver). All of them were friendly, communicative, and professional in every aspect. Ellie was with us answering questions every step of the way, and Steve, our driver, was updating us with estimated arrival time basically as soon as he had an idea, and his date was spot on. My wife had to handle the move getting loaded in LA by herself and Steve and the local team he hired were friendly and helpful. Along the way, Steve was the only driver, and all our items stayed on his truck the entire time, apart from the side-loading into a smaller truck for arrival in NYC. (Can't drive a semi down these small streets.) Everything was properly inventoried and barcoded, and arrived safely. Any furniture that had to be taken apart for the move was reassembled by the local team. Ellie also followed up as soon as the move was over to make sure everything went well. We hope we don't have to do another cross-country move any time soon, but if we do, I'll 100% be booking it with Merit and Mayflower. read more

I was helping my elderly aunt move from California to Minnesota. I contacted Merit Moving Systems/United for a quote. Joe Almeida came out and provided a quote. We also got quotes from a couple of other national moving companies. My Aunt ultimately wanted to use a moving company with a local agent that was closer to her house in La Crescenta. Even though I could not convince her to use MMS and United, Joe provided the low bid for the move and did so professionally. I also researched the local agents we were considering and found MMS to have the highest ratings of all of the other local agents for national firms. If it had been my decision, I would have used Joe and MMS/United. read more

AVOID AT ALL COST!! I contacted United Van Lines for a up coming move. They came out and gave me a quote, all was good. I was under the impression United would come out instead merits came out and picked up all my belongings. On some box's I had my address and others it was on the inside they still managed to lose about 15 box's. How is that possible? My stuff went into storage while I looked for a house. When I was taking inventory I found all these things missing. The driver let me see if I can find them so I started loading my truck with box's and let him alone, when I came back he said he found everything. I should have never left him alone all he did was check off the missing items as found. When I did find a house to move into that's when I realized how many things were missing. Thousands of dollars in items gone including a hospital bed that I badly need. They could fix this problem if they wanted to but they don't care. Use at your own risk. read more

My experience with Merit Moving Systems has been nothing but great and smooth. I relocated with them through my company so I cannot speak to final costs, quotes or initial estimates. However, what I can speak to is the entire moving process. First of all, I loved the customer service treatment I got through Merit. Any and every contact was professional and reassuring. I never felt like I couldn't pick up the phone and ask a couple of questions or double check a few details. They were also really responsive via email and followed up with my me frequently. The packing and moving was very quick and very efficient. We lived in a single family townhouse in Sonoma County and were making our way to Southern California. Our household is small (just my wife and I) but we're artists and designers and so we had a few things that needed special attention. Merit took care of everything nicely and our driver Frank and his team packed and loaded everything in a day and half! He was awesome and I'm grateful for his expertise and care. Highly recommended. They could have delivered everything within 5-7 business days for us but we opted for temporary storage until our move in date. When it was time to deliver our items, they took care of permitting, which was a real relief, and delivered everything quickly and professionally. We did lose two items out of the 300+ they packed and moved, and one of our wooden stools broke in the process, mostly from being stored in correctly. Considering I had vintage speakers, a tv, a projector and dj equipment transported, I was thrilled how well everything else arrived. I intended this to be a moving facility, but it turned out to be move/store/move . My issue , I guess, was with the storage. Don't use unless you insure your items for full value. Missing or damaged items are valued only by weight. My mistake is, I went with basic coverage, 0.60 per pound and didn't read the contract thoroughly. A 50" TV was refunded at 80 lbs. X 0.60 = $48.00 A recliner sofa @250lbs refunded for $150.00 . my queen pillow top mattress had water stains on it.(the container must have leaked) There were few boxes that went missing. I didn't have a complete inventory so I could document what went missing. The movers were fast , efficient and courteous. Consider the prices they will charge: Charge by the hour with a minimum number of hours No access to each container. You are charged by the hour with minimum hours for them to unload/load it. When moving time came, I was charged to unload my containers into the truck and then charged to unload the truck to my apartment. The drive time from their facility to my apartment is doubled.(eg. 1hr drive time. charged for 2 hours) They did everything correct , by the book and contract. Just be aware. read more

The movers were all very professional, and the coordinators were very communicative and helpful throughout the whole process. Merit coordinated the packing, loading, and unloading of all household goods on a short timeline of a couple of weeks, and most everything arrived in perfect condition aside from a few broken plates and a mirror. The movers were meticulous in wrapping all fragile and high value items, and they even disassembled a few items to make transport easier. It was evident that the moving crews were experienced. Merit handled our move on behalf of United Van Lines. Frank came out to do a walk thru and give us an estimate. He was very personable and accessible for follow up questions. He did miss including the crating of one of the granite table tops and an email adding another. Fortunately, it was able to be taken care of and new paperwork signed the day of the move. From a price perspective, they were lower, but the timeline was longer. Other places offered a faster delivery without sharing a truck. However, knowing that our items were all grouped together with color coded stickers and accessible without unloading and reloading others belongings seemed like a fair trade off for us. The driver (also Frank) was with us on both sides. He is very personable and knows the roads well. Our street was too narrow for the large truck so they loaded our items into a smaller truck for delivery to the house. Unfortunately, one of the trucks had a leak and a few boxes got wet. Nothing was damaged from that though. We did have some items break. A word of warning--be sure to tape the bottoms of boxes well. I didn't do that on a heavy box and the bottom fell out as it was being placed in the house and items broke. The rest of the items were brought in safely and placed were we wanted them. I asked Frank about the uncrating of the table tops and soon afterwards I received a call from the office to tell me when the third party would be contacting me. We decided to uncrate ourselves and I was issued a refund later. After the move, Ellie followed up with us. She asked if I wanted to file a claim for the broken items. We didn't feel the need to file a claim. However, she let me know that it would be no problem to do so later if I changed my mind. In short, Merit is with you the whole way and really wants you to be happy. read more

Highly recommended! We were supposed to use a different moving company for our cross country move from California to Dallas, TX, but the moving company we hired initially bailed on us the day before. Thankfully we contacted a few different moving companies ahead of time and got quotes from them before. United Van Lines (Merit moving systems) was one of them. I called John and explained the situation, asking him whether they can help us with our move or not since it was an emergency. Our targeted moving day was THE NEXT DAY. ( I know it was a crazy request because it's a cross state move, not local) He checked with his team right away and called me back within 5 minutes, with a YES!! Merit really saved us!!! They came on time for pick up on moving day, wrapped our furnitures nicely secured with blankets very well. John and Ellie kept updating us the status for the delivery date and took really good care of us during our big move! I did not need to worry about anything at all. It was just simply amazing customer service! When they delivered our stuff to our new home, NOTHING was broken. They are so professional and the price is very reasonable (We had 5 different quotes, John's quote was the second cheapest). The lowest quote we received was not from a legit moving company, plus no insurance. (Merit does offer you insurance for your property!) For your move, do not contact a broker. You will receive a bunch of emails and phone calls. And do not use any non legit moving companies, because they might bail on you or break your stuff and offer no insurance. Make sure to wrap your fragile items with bubble wrap or paper. You have to wrap these items carefully. So at least you are covering yourself. They did mention that if it's not wrapped correctly, things will break and it's not the movers fault. Just contact Merit, you won't regret it! Top notch service! read more
