I love Mellow Mushroom, plain and simple. It might not be my favorite pizza in the world, but the atmosphere and good vibes here more than make up for it. The staff is always welcoming. The place smells amazing also, the freshness of the pizza being made and that sweet, sweet smell of pizza sauce with a hint of oregano. Great background music and decor, too. On this particular visit we just shared a large cheese pizza. The crust is a bit too chewy for my liking but the pizza overall tasted great, especially the sauce. Our waitress also informed us about the drink special going on that included $3 Bloody Mary's, yet they tasted more like $9 Bloody Mary's! So good. They are a must try if you like your BM's spicy. Our waitress was great and seemed very cheerful. It seems like most of the staff here is like that. Medium sized pizza and large salad with one iced tea drink and tip: $43.00! The salad was OK but the pizza we expected would "Wow!" was perhaps a 6 on the old 1-10 scale. J&Js always had the best pricey pizza but sadly they're long gone. BUT, it was the waitress that was our problem. My sister and I ordered BYO large pizza half and half. Both halves were almost similar, we both ordered anchovies for our pizza and other extra toppings. The only difference was that I ordered garlic on mine. (Like actual garlic, not just oil and garlic as base) Our pizza didn't come with anchovies and garlic, though. But pizza was so good, 2 ingredients lacking was something we didn't find to complain about. Not a big deal at all. At the end of our meal, our waitress asked how was the food, we told her how good it was. We figured we have to at least raise our concern to her, but not go on full Karen mode about it. We said "We noticed there were no anchovies or garlic in our pizza. But it was still really good." It was her answer that threw me off. She said "The garlic dissolves in the pizza. But for the anchovies, I don't know what happened." As someone who knows how to cook, garlic doesn't just "dissolve" in the food. And for someone (for everyone, really) who has common sense, garlic doesn't just "dissolve" in the food. I mean, come on. If she didn't know or made a mistake when she took our orders, she could've at least be honest about it. Maybe let someone higher than her handle it, or be professional enough to apologize. She probably thought were were stupid and would actually believe her. Her answer seemed like she was convincing us to believe her stupidity, but in return it made her look even more pathetic about her knowledge--or lack thereof. Our waitress promptly disappeared for the next 20 minutes or so before I was finally able to give up and get a water. Picked up a Kosmic Karma through online ordering and it was a great experience! No waiting for our pizza when we arrived to pick it up, despite the restaurant being really busy. The pizza was absolutely delicious, honestly one of the best pizzas I've ever had. The only complaint that I have is that they could be taking social distancing more seriously. I've grown up going to Mellow Mushroom, it's one of my most favorite pizza places. I lived in Denton for 2 years and loved the Denton location. I recently came back home and brought a friend from out of state to try MM for the first time. We showed up on a Friday at 2pm and it was empty but we were seated right away. I have to say, I have never truly had a bad experience at this location the many times I've been but the ONLY issue we had was the entire restaurant reeked of sewage. The issue seemed to have been coming from the bathroom as I couldn't even stay in there long enough to use the restroom. We were sat near the restroom so our entire meal was masked by the smell. The pizza was amazing as usual but it was not what I was hoping to show my friend from out of state. We had to eat as quickly as we could. The staff were super super friendly but seemed completely unphased by the smell since no one mentioned it. I was told by another local Denton establishment that all of Hickory has an issue with sewage. I hope whatever the issue is can be solved because that really left a bad taste, in more ways than one . read more

Vegans! We got the Localvore Brutus salad. SO FRIGGIN GOOD. They sauteed the mushrooms in oil for us instead of Garlic butter- and we didn't even have to ask! They are so vegan knowledgeable. I love it. We also asked them to take off the Feta cheese and do Balsamic Vinegarette instead of Caesar dressing. We also got a side of Garlic Oil to pour on it. The answer I got was there was only one person in the kitchen, but She still couldn't seat me and my guest. If you're only going to serve one table at a time, why even bother to open for business? I'm so surprised I'm writing this on what was my formally favorite place in Denton - ever since they've opened. I mean, I've always had some, um... interesting dining experiences here but I've simply chalked it up to just part of the experience. But today, it legit felt like an episode of Punked. Well, after a total lack of consideration for my teenage boy who's brand new new to crutches (broken angle, shattered foot), upon arriving, it just went truly downhill. Apparently, the manager has started some Great 2020 Ranch Dressing War against customers. The place was just downright bizarre and uncomfortable today - in a very awful way. P.S. if you're going to be so "environmentally friendly" that you refuse plastic straws for customers, then actually be so. The endless plastic side dressing cups and plastic cocktail drinks are a very easy way to reduce plastic - just use reusable dishes! Ugh, I'm just over the place. It's become an annoying struggle, every time, to eat here. I'm such a longtime, frequent customer but after today, I'm done. Best of luck to them, anyhow. read more

Mellow mushroom is a fun restaurant with really good pizza, but pretty expensive. The restaurant is nice and open with lots of fun decorations. There are a lot of comfortable booths and the bar is a fun place to sit. The kitchen is open so you can see the dough being thrown up into the air. There are lots of tvs if you want to watch a game. The booths are really deep so if you are in a date you kinda kinda escape all the other distractions. The servers are always very friendly and helpful. They do a great job checking on you and getting everything you need. The menu has a very large selection. They have multiple types of appetizers, pizzas, salads, and sandwiches. I have heard the the pretzels are really good, but always stick with just pizza. They have a large selection of pizzas that sound great. Now the main reason that we eat here, they have vegan cheese and crust. For a small extra fee you can get vegan cheese on any pizza. We always get the veggie pizza with the vegan cheese and it's delicious. They overload veggies, including broccoli, my favorite on pizza. The crust is nice and soft and tastes homemade. The pizza is really really good. The only negative about this place is that it's s little expensive. Would eat here a lot more if it was little cheaper, but makes for a special pizza outing. On Saturday January 22nd. I experienced one of the worst customer service events in my life at this little Denton Pizza joint. Simple scenario, a surprise birthday bash for my wife at a fantastic wine bar in downtown Denton. I sent in an order to the Mellow Mushroom restaurant 50 yards away to get food for the party. I sent in the order a day previous, setup the exact time of pickup, and called two hours ahead of time to reiterate how important it was to have the order ready in time! ( surprise party) the staff said, absolutely! We will start on it very soon. Sent our son to pick it up. NOT READY. He waited 20 minutes, as the time for the surprise loomed closer. Still, NOT READY. No apologies, no options like ( go to the party, we will deliver it when it's finally done ) in fact, they gave him attitude, like he was being the jerk here. He finally got the food ( missed his mothers surprise birthday expression ). The general manager Tori gave him her card, but again, no apologies. The following day I called the general manager, Tori. I introduced myself, her reply was " I know who you are, it's really busy right now, can I call you back later?" I asked if I should call her in about 2 hours ( to make sure we actually did talk) she said No! I have your number, hung up. NO RETURN CALL. Just so you have perspective, this wasn't a few pies and some drinks. This was around $200 in food. As a journalist of 30 years I have seen this kind of lack of professionalism in many fields but it always feels more ironic coming from the service industry. If you are not even remotely interested in the customer outcome why are you in this job? Can't be the money! A simple lack of respect and ability to admit fault by staff and management caused a ripple effect that could easily have been avoided. Management 101 here. If you look over the reviews on this MM location the comments in the negative column are specifically about hours long waits or staff attitudes. These are management issues. Bad mangers have bad staff working for them. This might speak to the fact that there are now only 4 MM franchises in the DFW area, one of the largest and still fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country.
