These guys do 2 things only..... Meat & Bread, and they do a great job. Well they also do soups and salads, but you go here mainly for the meat sandwiches. Going here just for a soup or salad is like goin to McD's for a salad or goin to a hooker for a hug. Their porchetta sandwich is the bomb. Tender pieces of pork seasoned with salsa verde & topped with crispy pork rinds served on a ciabatta bread. Tastes like heaven. There's a long line up all the time, but it moves quickly. Also they are open from 11am to 4 pm only. Tip for Low carb-ers : You can ask em to skip the bread and just get the meat in a bowl Food : Awesome Service : Friendly / Quick Ambiance : Casual Worth the price : OH YEAH read more

Best sandwich joint in Vancouver! Honestly when I was first introduced to this placed 5/6 years ago, I knew that I could never look back. I ordered the porchetta and instantly knew that it would become a favourite of mine whenever I was in the area. The novelty of ordering from the meat carver themselves was exciting, and seeing them cut up a slice of roast pork, add some crackling and top it with salsa verde made my mouth water each and every time. Plus it's so simple, it's literally just meat and bread and the size is very good (I used to be able to eat two, but have since cut back to eating one). For $10 I think it's an amazing buy, and they're incredibly consistent across their locations! read more

Went to meat and bread today for quick lunch. Had the Vego. The bread was nice and crispy on the outside and soft inside. The content was a bit soft and somewhat salty. In my opinion not as good as the classic porchetta. read more

Alright - so I've been constantly been prodded to check out Meat & Bread from all angles. As with most hyped up stuff, I was fully expecting disappointment or I'm just a contrarian douchebag - I think I fancy myself as the Voltaire or George Orwell of Yelp reviews - just less witty or relevant and more far annoying and suffering from delusions of grandeur. So this is the new Coal Harbour location of M&B and I came in on their second day of business. The large windows and slick, trendy decor suits the area and it's more geared towards take-out/nearby businesspeople as the small table has about 8 seats. They were playing Jaydiohead -- you're too cool and cannot decide between listening to Jay-Z or Radiohead? Why not mashed-up and at the same time? As we were eating, tons of people in business attire poked their heads in and some even got free soup as samplers. Although I did get jealous as the cheap Chinaman in me I wished I got free soup as well. It's simple as can be: 4 sandwiches on offer (one daily special), 1 soup and two salads on offer. That's it. Things are off to a good start. To my tablemates' dismay, they sold out of the veal special and we weren't feeling the location-exclusive corned beef - so we got two of the much-lauded porchetta sandwiches for $8 each. Okay - I love pork. I had my romances with beef and my adventures with chicken, but my porcine friend has always been there for me. Like Sonny and Cher: "I love you, Babe." So, it's really no surprise I enjoy the shit out of my porchetta - delicious fatty pork, crispy crackling and the sharpness of the salsa verde was awesome. Also, the ciabatta bread had a good amount of chewiness and crunch. (Side note: Swiss Bakery on E. 3rd - run by my homegirl - provides the bread for Meat & Bread and Japadog). I ate in silence - it was good. However, my friend didn't enjoy her porchetta due to the strong insistence of the parsley salsa verde (she's clearly in the minority judging by the reviews at the other location) and wasn't able to finish her sandwich. To be honest, I was hoping she won't finish so I could shovel more delicious pig fat and carbs into my mouth. 'Finishing the whole thing'/'picking up leftovers' is definitely one of the big advantages of being a fat guy. I always feign that I'm being imposed upon as I try to stifle my nefarious chuckle as I take their plate and send the remainder of the meal to a good home. If you're into rage comics, insert the 'I Lied' face here. I was also pretty impressed that one of the staff noticed the 'yuck faces' she made and checked if everything was okay. And was even more impressed that he mimicked her 'yuck face' . Well - in short, it didn't piss me off and I can understand the hype. That's enough for 4 stars. Well done, Meat & Bread. read more

Nommy bread? Check. Nommy fillings? Check. Good salad? Check. I don't mind the long line, because their sandwich was nice and warm. I got today's special, the hoisin bbq pork sandwich. It was very flavorful! A little messy to eat, but no worries. And their packaging is super cute. I'm more in love with their salad, to be honest. It was like...caesar kale salad, and the dressing was salty and creamy, complimenting the fresh kale leaves and the thick bacon bits (or was it ham...?). It just left me wanting more of their salad. I hope they still have some tomorrow... read more

I'm a devotee of Meat & Bread, but the Gastown location is kind of far to go for spontaneous "I'm dying of hunger need Meat & Bread" jaunt. Living in the West End I was stoked when M&B opened up a place that's a wee bit closer and a BFF (one of many) and I RUSHED ON OVER to check it out. Like rushed. As in, we were waiting for them to officially open! Sad to say it was a huge disappointment. The service was slow, barely friendly and just...unenthusiastic. Our "stay in" sandwiches (which were cold) were saved in little take out boxes instead of the lovely wooden boards that you get at the original location. It seemed that everyone was getting takeout boxes and the garbage in the place was OVERFLOWING with used takeout boxes. Can you say lame? I did. Several times. When queried on this the cashier responded with "it's easier this way". So... you waste paper, drive up costs, inconvenience your customer.. because it's "easier" for you? Whoa, so not cool. You know what else was so not cool? The layout of the place. Normally it's not something I really pay a lot of attention too, but here? It was just weird! There are two huge windows in the place that overlook the streets, but there was only one (ONE) table. Smack dab in the middle of the room. You know what was weird about the table apart from it's weird and totally random placement? The fact that in order to sit at the table, you have to move it. In other words, the (uncomfortable) metal chairs are RIVETED to the floor but the table moves freely. This place was a complete disappointment. The service was bad, the layout was uninviting and the food was barely lukewarm but..dry?? Weird. I'm never going back to this location and if I *really* am craving a juicy porchetta or meatball sandwich - I'll just make the trek to Gastown. Meat & Bread, what happened? read more

I have gone to the original M&B several times before always with great results. However, having one downtown is quite a bit closer and much more convenient for me. As per usual, I ordered my standard porchetta for myself and one for a friend. We were both unimpressed. The bread seemed dryer and harder than I ever recall it being before, while it was also very greasy and way too salty. Quite a big disappointment, but at least I can still rely on the good ol original Meat and Bread in Gastown. Fingers crossed. read more

I just finished my first sandwich from Meat and Bread. I ordered the Sandwich of the Day, Veal, and I'm sad to say that I'm not that impressed. I found the meat to be a bit greasy, and the bread a bit to crunchy. For me it just wasn't a good combination. I also found the sandwich really messy, so for those of you in business suits, be a bit more careful and watch for the drippings. However.... They sell the most amazing chocolate bars! The bars are $3.00 each and worth every penny, splurge and try one! The service was super quick, in fact the quickest I've come across in the city. The servers were friendly and the establishment very clean. I don't know if I will return, but it is worth going and checking out for yourself. If they added a roast beef sandwich to the menu I would definitely give that a try, but would not go back for the veal. read more

One word. Overrated. Wanted SO badly to love this restaurant as so many people flock to this place and the lineup every day at their downtown location is a huge advertisement for "EAT HERE". But was so sadly disappointed. I had the Porchetta because it seemed to be a signature dish and what carnivore doesn't like pork fat?! But instead, got a bad dose of LBTT (Looks Better Than it Tastes). While the portion size was very generous, the meat was dry, bland, and the overall sandwich was just plain boring. In fact, it was so boring, I didn't even finish half the sandwich. Retired the rest to pasture as even my lunch mate wouldn't eat it. Maybe it needed more salsa verde. Maybe it needed more crackling. Maybe it sat too long and dried out. Maybe I got a bad batch. But not quite sure what the fuss is about. And not quite sure why the daily lineups. Maybe the other sandwiches are better, or the other location has more flavorful Porchetta. But love the concept of short menu, big delivery. It's just too bad I didn't get the delivery the day I went. Maybe I'll go back and try a different sandwich. But I don't think I'd line up for it again. read more

The fillings are wonderful - I've had the Porchetta and Lamb thus far. But that bread does not do the sandwich justice. You need jaws of steel, especially around the edges of the bun. Limited seating inside. Some benches in the building courtyard. Remember to take lots of napkins! read more

ONE OF THE BEST TURKEY SANDWICHES I'VE HAD IN MY LIFE (that someone else made besides me). Is a bold statement and I'm sticking to it. My first visit to Meat & Bread was late last summer, happened to be walking by and saw a buzz around the entrance. There have been a lot of "trendy" type places open up in the area in the last couple of years and most all of them have not disappointed me so I gave it a go. Talked to one fellow patron outside who was on a bench and asked his opinion and he promptly said "Best porchetta I've had in my life." and while that was a ringing endorsement I instead opted for the sandwich of the day which was the turkey. Where do I begin? Other then the mountain sandwiches I make after any holiday where I cook a turkey this was the best turkey sandwich I've ever had and it was different how I would have done my own because I think it was simmered in gravy. The sandwiches are simple and that's meant as a compliment, they literally let their meat and bread stand on their own which shows a lot of confidence in their product and that confidence is not misplaced in the slightest for every sandwich there that I have tried with one exception. LOL, here comes the criticism after all the good. Their signature sandwhich, the porchetta which I did eventually get around to trying, gotta tell ya I was very underwhelmed. The actual pork meat itself was pretty good but it was fatty as heck and while I know that fat usually means good taste when it comes to meat (I am a Memphis Blues fan and love a fatty Montreal smoked meat) this one misses the mark and I think it's because the fat doesn't really marble into the meat, it's just hunks of fat. You can bite into that sandwich and have most of that whole bit be fat, kinda of turn off and I might be in the minority but I really didn't enjoy the cut up crispy skin they added to it. The price also seems a little high for a lunch time sandwich which is a bit of a deterrent for me to go more often, but with a line up out the door at lunch I'm sure they won't miss me that much. All that being said about price, I'm really never put off by paying a little more for something that is quality and this place in my mind is that. The other sandwiches I've tried have been the meatball and the jerk chicken and both were above expectations and will continue to be a patron of this establishment and it will be a place I take out of town visitors to. Just to finish up, I really love the decor the butcher shop theme they have going on in the place, it really adds to the vibe if you can actually find a place to sit inside that is. Place is highly suggested and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was based on price and their "Signature" porchetta sandwich was a let down. Other then that feel confident that what you're paying for will be a quality item. read more

Used to be one of my favourite lunch spots in downtown! While a lot of people gush about their Porchetta sandwich, I've found it to be hit and miss, occasionally it's amazing, while other times it's bland and flavourless. The same goes for their specials which are usually some sort of slow cooked meat, with some vegetables, something crunchy, and usually a creamy-ish sauce. That being said, when their sandwiches are good, they are REALLY good and definitely make you want to eat another (even though one is already pretty heavy). Either way, definitely worth trying at least once or twice if you are visiting or work downtown! Just like everyone else says - show up early!! The line gets long after 1130. read more

Just ate the corned beef, and it was just frickin' wonderful. A great balance of meat, kraut and mustard. The black bean & quinoa salad was delicious, and I'm not a fan of quinoa to begin with, so that's saying something. I have only one concern and that is for seating. I got there at 11:30am and it was already full inside...because there are only about 10 seats inside. The wealth of outdoor sitting spots around the restaurant would make for a wonderful lunch experience on a warm sunny day, but unfortunately today was neither sunny nor warm. read more

After having gone there a few years back to try their infamous Porchetta sandwich, and to see for ourselves what the hype was all about, we were thoroughly disappointed and just thought it was overhyped. Since we're Chinese, pork is nothing special to us. Pork in a sandwich? Pffft. Having said that, we admittedly had high expectations for this place, which may or may not have hindered our thoughts on the oh-so-great Porchetta sandwich. This time, we went to their other location on Pender Street and tried their daily special. Bang Bang Turkey - $9 (3.5/7) We can't quite remember what's in this sandwich, but there's turkey, of course, some peanut sauce, some spicy sauce, and a bunch of random veggies as pictured above. This is definitely NOT date food. The mixture of sauces starts dripping onto your plate, and probably generously slathers around your mouth. The taste of the sandwich itself was eh. The peanut sauce didn't mix with the other ingredients. It's as if they needed to put sauce in this sandwich but didn't know what, so they just blindly used peanut sauce. Overall, we'd probably go with the Porchetta next time. ....If there's a next time. $8/9 for JUST a sandwich is extremely pricey, especially since the sandwich is probably just a 6". read more

OK, this has been a bit late, but this location is as visit-worthy as my other 5* review for meat and bread http://www.yelp.com/biz/meat-and-bread-vancouver?hrid=Y7MteDkMgNP2c-YWuaW7cA&utm_campaign=www_review_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct) Same menu, same great service, just helping a different work-i-er crowd of people. What makes me give this place an actual 5.5*'s (I know, impossible... it's madness, blah blah blah) is the kindness of the owner letting me stash my iphone there as I did my US embassy visit. If not for that, the scenario would have gone down like this: 1) reschedule my interview and never move to the US legally 2) say adios to my phone There aren't many businesses near the US embassy in Vancouver. I'm not saying that you should make a habit out of using this delicious restaurant for your own non-food-related needs, but hey: isn't it sick knowing that they're more than just a sandwich shop? I was in town for a conference, and was excited to see what Vancouver had to offer. I saw this place in my research, and decided to try it out for lunch. What ended up happening was that I ate here for just about every day of the trip! Day 1 - Half Porchetta, half Korean BBQ Chicken. Split two sandwiches with my GF. First time trying their famed Porchetta. Pretty dang good. Korean BBQ Chicken was also tasty, but it didn't taste like any KBBQ I've ever had. Could be different in Vancouver vs SF Bay Area Day 2 - Lamb neck, roasted pepper, eggplant. I don't like lamb, but I was intrigued by the special. Good sandwich again, was able to overcome my aversion to lamb to enjoy this. Nice job! If you like lamb, I bet this sandwich was extremely off the chain. Day 3 - Turkey with Feta Spread. Again, something I don't like: feta! But I love turkey, so I went for it. Great sandwich. How do they keep doing it? Day 4 - Pork butt, broccoli, fennel mustard mayo. This sandwich was unbelievable. Amazing amazing amazing. Top marks!! Day 5 - Porchetta. I thought I'd close my trip with the Porchetta. Interestingly, I didn't enjoy it as much the second time as the first! I think the specials are so varied and interesting, that it made going back to a simpler sandwich tough! But still very tasty! My friends who went with me all got the Special that day, based on the Fraser Valley Beef. They all loved it. Maybe I should have gotten the Special! I hope to make a trip to VAN soon. This place is quite wonderful. And I would remiss to not mention how nice the staff was here. Easy to talk to, willing to offer advice, gracious when complimented. P.S. Watch out for the big white seagull patrolling the plaza just south of M&B. He wants your sandwich. And he'll get it if you give him a chance ;) read more

Is the sandwich good? Yeah. Is it worth 10$? Certainly not. You only have a few options. porchetta, the special, and another meat option and a veg. Quite honestly one of the best sandwiches I've had in Canada. The bread to meat ratio is good and the garnishes pair really well with the meat for really good flavouring. The bread is also the main reason why I think it's one of my favourites- it has a crisp fresh crunch yet it is super soft, light, and not chewy. To catch up with a friend whom I hadn't seen for a while, I decided to try this location out. Even though it was lunch time we found seating easily and the decor is very similar to their Cambie location. I would suggest showing up just before noon to beat the crowds. I tried the Porchetta which was good but on the dry side and didn't have the usual taste that I had experienced at the Cambie location. Overall this is a good lunch spot for a quick bite but not as tasty as I remember it. read more

I love the concept more than I like the sandwich. And the sandwich is very very tasty. Porchetta, corned beef or lamb, doesn't matter, all very well executed! I am so jealous of this concept, because it's so simple, but oh so well put together. I can come here alone to enjoy the simplicity of a succeeding business idea! I just changed my initial 4-star quotation to a 5-star, people tend to get a little crazy when they are in love, and I am in love with Meat & Bread. I do love a good sandwich and Meat and Bread's Tuesday special, the roast turkey is as good a sandwich as one can get. It is a great tasting sandwich. Freshly, in-house roasted turkey tastes every so tender with a nice sauce that brings the sandwich to life. The bread is good, tastes fresh. The drawbacks: a messy sandwich. Most of the sauce of my friend's sandwich ended up on his pants. It leaked through the little take-away box. This is not the first instance I have heard of where it happens. The price: $9 plus taxes is a bit high for a sandwich, especially when compared to a similarly priced salad that is more filling. read more

Porchetta, yes. So good and such a tasty sandwich. Been here three times and every time I haven't been disappointed by the quality of the food. It can get busy though, so I'd recommend that you either come early, or else bring someone you wouldn't mind chatting with while waiting to order. Seating is a little limited, but then again it's so great to be able to order your food on a nice day and head out to the park and eat there. Hands down, great place for sandwiches. read more

I really liked the sandwiches here. Tried the corned beef. It was a bit heavy on the mustard but it was good. My boy actually preferred this one. Saw this place on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives then another friend HIGHLY recommended this place...ok so it was on my list of to-do's in Vancouver. I mean..a few sandwhiches on board..so I didn't think too much of it. But being a rebel...I decided to get the Vegetarian.. My friend was smarter and decided to order the Porchetta (that's what they are known for) and I think we were debating if we should get another one..because I ate most of what I was suppose to be "sampling". I don't usually like pork but omgoodness this Porchetta hugged by these slices of scrumptious bread was to die for. If I could have any sandwhich being my last sandwhich ever....I choose the Porcheta from Meat and Bread. Maybe because I am a visitor..the locals I talked to didn't rave about it as much. But you know how it is..you always want what you can't get (all the time). I don't care..I love this place. I want to try the one on Cambie since I think that one is the older one with a bit more character. This location is a bit more in the business area and small. I think there are some bar seats and two tables outside. AMAZING A ++++ all the way! read more

Wow, I can't believe what just happened when I went in to ask the man behind the counter if they carry gluten free bread. I had asked several months ago if they had any gluten free bread and they politely told me, "no, but you can have any of our fillings as a side." So I thought I would go back and inquire if they now carry it. The response? "We will NEVER have gluten free bread!" I said, "Never?" and the fellow said, "No, NEVER." I have to say that his demeanour, tone of voice, and attitude have made my decision for me NEVER to visit this establishment again. Its really too bad that they have decided to cut out a segment of their potential customer base this way. Met with friends for lunch and someone suggested this place. I got the corn beef with potato bacon salad. First of all I feel that the sandwich is too try and flavor is quite lacking as all there was was the sour cabbage and mild beef taste then bam with Dijon finishing. What disappointed me the most was the salad. Potato was severely UNDERCOOKED. If feels like the potato was just chopped up and thrown together in a salad bowl. Now the dressing... It is so overwhelming salty that I had to buy a cup of coffee to wash it down. Boy. And also bacon? I only found two bits of bacon that was the size of a rice grain. Honestly if you say potato bacon salad I was hoping to actually chew on bits of bacon. I'm definitely not wanting to come back again. read more

The lineup at lunch time was way out the door... A telltale sign that either people were crazy and enjoyed standing in long lines or that they truly liked the sandwiches. It only took a couple minutes to get through the line and order one of the 6 daily specials; Meat and Bread has gotten their sandwich-making efficiency down to an art. After forking out $10 for a sandwich, I looked for a place to sit... There was a large communal table and not much else, so I took my sandwich to go. I'd give the sandwich that I had a 3.5/5. There was a solid amount of spiced meat on the roughly 6" sub and the added sauces provided a pretty tasty undertone. Was it worth $10 though? I'll leave that for you to decide. read more

Meat and Bread. Sounds simple, and sadly, the porchetta sandwich they serve IS simple on the palette. Given the reviews, I was expecting more but it's basically roasted pork (for those of you familiar with Chinese BBQ, it's like crispy roasted pork... "siew jui") on a toasted ciabatta bun with some salsa verde. The bun isn't overly fresh, in fact, maybe a bit stale. The pork was cooked well, but I could really get that meat at a Chinese bbq place. The salsa verde didn't really come through. All in all, an average sandwich. It's not bad, but nothing special. read more

I stopped in for a quick lunch on a recent trip to Vancouver. The menu options are somewhat limited and seem to vary from day to day so keep an open mind when walking through the door. I believe there were 5 sandwich options on the menu. I shared a Porchetta and a Corned Beef sandwich with my son. Both were fresh and prepared with quality ingredients. The corned beef was reminiscent of a banh mi with sambal aioli and pickled slaw joining the corned beef on an artisan bun. Messy yet delicious. The Porchetta was very simple but tasty. Carved pork loin with chicharron on a bun. My favorite was the corned beef but both were very good. read more

Oh meat and bread... My first time having it was at the gastown location for a nice breakfast and it has changed my love for sandwiches. So I can never resist. The crunchy skin just gives it that extra texture.. The verde on it.. Mmm delish. I'd suggest you go super early... 1145 at the very latest if you're wanting to skip the line. It does go by pretty quickly though. The service is great, everyone is super friendly and I've never had a anything but wonderful service from the people that work there.
