And by the law of averages it was a 3. They have now opened this new location, and are decidedly below average. The bread was once again a slightly past its prime commercial ciabatta. They really need better bread. A 2 for the bread once again. The pulled pork was underseasoned, had no sense of smokiness, and quite frankly was quite bland. This location is quite close to my work so it's the main Meat & Bread that I go to, however, quality and quantity is quite consistent across the board at all locations. My favourite option is the porchetta. I've had the other options and while they are delicious, the porchetta is the one I return to time and time again. It's always stuffed full of that roasted pork with dispersed pieces of crispy skin and the quality and taste of the sandwich is the same, year after year. There aren't a lot of tables to sit and eat at this location but it works for me because I usually take it back to work with me. The assembly line of the operation is a nice smooth transition from ordering to paying to getting your food. If I remember correctly, there are usually 2-3 sandwich options to choose from so it's not overwhelming in deciding what you want if you're indecisive. read more

This place is completely perfect for the busy, downtown lunch crowd. My friend and I chose it as a convenient location for both of us, and boy am I glad we did!! The line up was well out of the door when I arrived, which put me off, but I'm glad my friend had arrived before me and was already halfway to the door. I have been to both Meat and Bread locations here in Vancouver. I prefer this location simply because of the environment. The original location is a bit sketchy and is impossible to finding parking. The porchetta sandwich changes the way you think about a roasted pork sandwich, including a Cuban. The panzanella side salad was good, but I would have liked more veg and a little less crouton. Coworkers have come back to the lunchroom with their little white boxes; there is always a lineup outside (even in the rain and snow!); on sunny days the courtyard is full of nice looking people ok their lunch breaks looking happy with these little white boxes in the laps. So I finally gave in. Pros: - the lineup, while deceivingly long, gors by pretty fast. This is probably because... - they only have 4 types of sandwiches on the menu: the porchetta (what they are known for), corned beef, veggie, and a daily special. One soup. one salad. i like this concept. - Prices are very reasonable. $7-9 for a pretty hearty sandwich - service and staff are super friendly Cons: - Everyone said you HAVE to have the porchetta so I did. The crackling pork was delicious BUT with the salsa verde sauce made it quite salty. Too salty. - The Italian sausage soup, while tasty, just reminded me of a runny spaghetti sauce. Unfortunately, because of all the hype, I did expect more from the food. This won't deter me from going back again...but it did make for a lackluster first experience. The bread (same bread they use for all sandwiches) has a chewy crust which isn't great when the fixens are saucy...a bunch of the chicken and sauce just come out on all sides after the first bite even despite using my best messy sandwich eating technique. Bad choice of bread IMO. Also not enough slaw... meat to slaw ratio is paramount !!!! and they must be using a 6:1 where I prefer more slaw..like 3:1 or even 2:1 (meat to slaw). I just don't understand the Meat & Bread hype. The good: love the vibe of the restaurant and its minimalist concept. The assembly line method of serving customers really appeals to me in this context. The bad: the individual cutting and assembling the meat on the bread should be wearing gloves. I had the banh mi. Aka the Vietnamese sub. Unfortunately I am still unable to find a good one anywhere in Vancouver. The tofu element was better here than most but the bun , which seems to be the staple for all their sandwiches doesn't work for this kind of sandwich. Too chewy. I would think if they lost the sriracha toned down the pickled veg more cilantro and some sweet soya it would be pretty good. I also had a chickpea salad which was good value. Service was fast. The location itself is not as good as the one on Cambie, because it doesn't seem as lively to me and is smaller. Prices are ok. I don't know why but the workers here don't use gloves. I generally tend to arrive before the usual rush at about 11:45 but fear not, if you do see there's a line making its way out the doorway these guys are quick. First off, being a meat eater I would say this place is perfect. For my vegetarian foodies out there you can give it a shot but they only have a single sandwich. I myself prefer the Porchetta which is super tasty and crispy, honestly words can't describe the joy I get when eating one. Anyways after you've ordered and paid for your food the inside seating is usually crowded but they do have some picnic benches and tables outside. Best sandwich joint in Vancouver! Honestly when I was first introduced to this placed 5/6 years ago, I knew that I could never look back. I ordered the porchetta and instantly knew that it would become a favourite of mine whenever I was in the area. The novelty of ordering from the meat carver themselves was exciting, and seeing them cut up a slice of roast pork, add some crackling and top it with salsa verde made my mouth water each and every time. Plus it's so simple, it's literally just meat and bread and the size is very good (I used to be able to eat two, but have since cut back to eating one).
