Great spot downtown, but if you're coming for happy hour, come early! We came at 5pm on a Wednesday to do happy hour before the 7pm UConn game and barely grabbed 2 seats at the bar! It was crowded but definitely worth it. Happy hour drinks are 4 to 6 dollars including beer, wine, Prosecco, a martini and some mixed drinks. They have some small plates too and buck a shuck oysters! Yum! Buffalo cauliflower barely tasted like cauliflower, it was amazing! Tater tots and the pretzel were also super tasty! Can't wait to come back for dinner! read more

For good quality food and libations, this is a solid place to catch a professional ambiance, good food, and to mingle amongst Hartfords who's who. The service and hospitality was extremely professional, and the service was excellent. I had the salmon which was cooked perfectly, the noodles were okay, I think next time I will try rice or a salad. For dessert we ordered the cookies - these might be the softest and warmest cookies I've ever had - the ratio was perfect! Lol. All in all great place to eat. read more

I've been here twice, but only for Taste of Hartford. The first time I came, service was amazing. Our server was so nice, knowledgeable about the menu and drinks, and attentive. We loved the bread, if they gave them in a basket (instead of individually), they'd probably be all gone before our appetizers came. Every one of our appetizers were delicious. Entrees were mostly great too (I'd recommend the prime rib over the sword fish which was a little dry). While the desserts were generally on the sweet side, my group tried all 3 on the Taste of Hartford menu, we still loved our experience. The second time was more of the same, except that the service was only good, not amazing. I would definitely come back and try their regular menu. Reservations are a must though, as it can get pretty packed. Parking can also be a challenge if you don't want to valet park. read more

Had reservations set for three after show atXL center. 1 Hr early, staff tried to accommodate with not much luck. Finally sat down at "first come first serve" bar area. Server did not know what came standard on a Kids Cheeseburger, not a make or break probably not a lot of nine year old's frequent the establishment. Food and drink were average, the disappointment came with the Pierogi dish, 3 very small pierogis with maybe an ounce of lobster meat poured on top for $18.00 ($6.00 Pr) very overpriced, and they seemed store bought. read more

We had the Roasted Sea Scallops and the Sesame Crusted Tuna - both outstanding. Paired with a bottle of Buehler Cab. Finished with Coffee, and Salted Caramel Baked Alaska. All insanely good! We went here for Valentine's Day dinner, so the menu is fixed with plenty of options in all three categories. Starter, main course and desert. This isn't our first time visiting Max and again, it was delicious and the staff is exceptional, kind and very professional. When going to a place with prices such as this, you want to be treated the way Max's staff treats you. While it was very busy we did have a longer waiting period than usual between each course. I started with the Lobster bisque, and WOW. Chunks of lobster are visible as they set the bowl down and the flavor follows suit. My husband got the pierogis to start and thoroughly enjoyed the soft exterior and flavors surrounding them in the sauce and toppings. Our steaks were cooked to perfection with the exterior having a beautiful sear. My steak came with crab on top that melted in your mouth and wasn't over flavored, I loved being able to taste the crab itself. We finished with two different desserts, one being the chocolate soufflé and the other was a Russian honey cake. The soufflé had a hard, crunchy crust filled with a delicate and delightful chocolate center. And the Russian cake was the perfect amount of sweetness and moisture with every bite (didn't get a picture because I had already eaten it!) The whole evening was heavenly and it's always truly an experience there. Whether you live in the area or you're visiting, I always recommend Max Downtown for a date night or special occasion. read more

Just celebrated our 31st anniversary here Saturday evening, and everything, and everyone was amazing. From our greeting at the door to Kassi, and Dan our servers. Both were attentive, knowledgeable, and made us feel special on our special day. We had clams(from the amazing raw bar) and the tuna to start both were wonderful, and the tomahawk steak for two for dinner it was incredible! Probably the best steak I have ever had. My wife also loved her drinks, (spring tyme, pear martini) I enjoyed the whisky bar which really there aren't enough words!! Unreal selection had the EH Taylor, and Weller 107 enough said. Me and my wife, cousins and my sister's birthday brother-in-law eight of us went there last night for St. Patrick's Day. My wife ordered steak and they had to take it back a lot of grizzle. The service was OK. I asked for water three times and did not get it. The manager did come over and calm the dinner and a birthday cake. The never serve that. And my cousins husband had called me from cabbage and cabbage wasn't cooked right and it was very salty. The corn beef. read more

We came here for restaurant week and had a wonderful experience! We started with a creamy mushroom chowder. It was quite rich and filling and my favorite part was the parmesan croutons...yum. For dinner, I had the filet mignon with cheddar mashed potatoes and roasted root vegetables. The steak didn't have much seasoning on it but it was cooked a perfect medium and honestly, it's a high quality filet mignon---it really doesn't need much. My husband had the Hawaiian blue marlin and really enjoyed it, especially the subtle flavor of the coconut carrots. For dessert, I had a delicious vanilla bean creme brûlée with an espresso. Finally, I have to mention that while the food was expertly prepared, part of what made the experience special was the ambiance and service. I almost never mention service in my reviews unless it's exceptionally good or bad, and our waiter was so friendly and personable that he made our night out even more enjoyable. Above and beyond in service and cuisine. We hosted our post wedding brunch at Max Downtown two weekends ago and could not have been more thrilled. Beyond the warm, friendly, amazingly efficient service, the restaurant epitomizes everything that makes the Max group so entirely exceptional. Our group of 40 was positively blown away by the tremendous attention to detail and beautiful ambiance. And the food? Well, let's just say it wasn't your average continental breakfast spread. From Cajun shrimp and grits with cheddar polenta and andouille creole sauce to classic eggs Florentine, smoked salmon and bagel platters, and decadent ciabatta French toast, each dish was more remarkable than the last. Truly a perfect balance of breakfast staples and savory lunch options. And the desserts? Well, if my 8 year old niece's bugged out eyes were any indication, I'd say Max nailed that as well. An exquisite array of housemade pastries, cakes, chocolate covered strawberries, cheesecake pops, and more. The icing on the cake? The staff came out with to-go boxes for our guests! 1.) Just to warm you up: I read the mixed reviews, and was always iffy on coming here. I believe a couple reviews noted this place for being bland and not so creative with their cooking. I can be honest, I sometimes like to feed into the hype. But that day I decided to be my own source of truth and reason, and let my taste buds do the critiquing. 2.) What your eyes may see: Upscale. Conservative. A place where ties, suits and brief cases come to for lunch and dinners. A place that people who are more established would be able to eat (aka, middle aged and higher). Outside there's a valet parking guy, who is dressed up for business. This area right here almost reminds me of Manhattan, NY. A business professional type of atmosphere. At the host stand I was greeted by two smiling middle aged men with suits. Perhaps the Maitre'D? Perhaps the managers? No pin pointing it because it was lunch time. What your eyes may see is always what your hears may hear, a somewhat pretentious bunch. When you are there, I guess you should do as the romans do there, if you feel your lungs are vulnerable to the toxic air of snobbery. Grab a friend, family member or know one of the staff there and you will be set. 3.) Food: The first thing I had was a small bread with butter and sea salt. The bread was soft and butter milky, and the butter was very rich and creamy. I had the veal and meatball panini. It was juicy, it was tasty. It came with parmesan cheese and spinach. Served with a side of parmesan fries, they cooked it to the way Anthony P. likes it which is crispy. I had a Pino Noir. I don't even remember the name. 4.) Service: I sat at the bar side. My bartender's name was Scott. He was a very good guy. It was like he was a one man band, being able to gracefully serve food and drinks to the 10 patrons sitting at bar side and for the rest of the restaurant. 5.) Impressions: I am coming back here to have some drinks, share some laughs. I'd like to check out more of the lunch menu and explore the dinner menu. I recommend dressing up a little, even if it's lunch time. Having been to several of their Happy Hours (Monday-Friday: 4-6pm) I finally had the opportunity to dine-in, and what a wonderful experience it was! Got things rolling with the "Brewtus Maximus", a special house IPA brewed exclusively for the Max restaurants by Thomas Hooker Brewery, it was equal parts hoppy and delicious. My buddy went with the dirty martini, and it was exquisitely made. We all started off with the "panko crusted calamari". Wow, seriously, hands down some of the best calamari I've had. A large portion and well-made, the accompanying aioli was good too. For my main course I went for the "Cast Iron Seared Berkshire Pork Chop". Ordered medium-rare, it was the most moist and juicy pork chop I've had. With herb-roasted potatoes, brussel sprouts and a bacon salad -- it was a sizeable plate and super yummy. My friends went with the "Downtown" Burger. As the most affordable dinner option, it was a hearty wagyu beef burger that was served on a hot slate and came with these really irresistible smoked-beef-brisket potato tots. We rounded out the fantastic dinner with their "Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Cake". With chocolate and caramel sauces, and even candied macadamia nuts, it was heavenly! Whether it a be a business lunch or romantic dinner, Max Downtown doesn't spare any expense in delivering on quality, especially when it comes to outstanding dining and great service. Be it the waiters in black vests and white aprons, or the tall ceilings, giant wall murals, and ornate chandeliers -- I really appreciate the contemporary yet upscale atmosphere. Another Max restaurant succeeds I. Providing great service and a great meal. I would say, however, this was a higher level of service than I've had at Max Fish or Max Oyster which may be by design. Lauren was a great assets - helpful for questions, perfect at pacing courses as well as keeping our glasses full. It's a great chop house and two in our party had fish which they said were fantastic. One was salmon from the menu and the other a beautiful striped bass special. We got appetizers from the menu and one of the specials: warm fig, truffle and goat cheese Beignets served with melon balls that were a perfect match the cut the sweetness. The steak is as expected - tender and delicious. The sides you can order separately are big enough for two or three to share. There is a dessert menu just no one in my party made it that far. Valet parking is available for $9 right out front. A drop in the bucket to save time and compared to your dining check. It's all worth it. read more

Max Downtown is one of those places where with every bite you just blurt out, "Wow. This is damn good." I came here for a long, delectable meal with Joe B. and Thien N. Highlights included the panko-crusted calamari, which might have been the best calamari I've ever had. The breaded-ness was perfect and allowed for the squid's essence to shine. Each bite melted in my mouth. The burger was also a top 10 for me - and I've had lots of burgers! For $19 (cheapest dinner option), I got the wagyu beef burger, which was served on a hot slate and came with these really irresistible steak potato tots. Such a unique, fun, and tasty side. Lastly, we finished the the Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Cake, which was decadent and delicious. Downtown is definitely a place you go for a nice occasion. It's bustling with waiters carrying beautiful plates and classy diners chowing down on delicious, upscale dishes. read more

This place is a home run every time I come. The staff is warm, inviting and attentive. They don't rush you. This place is fancy but not snobby. It's expensive but worth it. Let me tell you about my most recent visit. When I walked in, the hostess immediately complimented my outfit and was gracious enough to wave off the fact we were late for our reservation. Our waiter was friendly, provided suggestions for wine and when I wasn't in love with the first glass, he threw it out and worked to find one I did love. By the way-- great wine list. And surprisingly, they have a great selection of very affordable wines as well as luxury options. To start, we couldn't decide between the grilled figs or bruschetta, so we got both. The simplicity of the dishes does not equate to lack of creativity. Elegantly plated, the sweet figs and melon complimented the salty prosciutto perfectly. The homemade lemon ricotta cheese and firm, fresh (local!!) tomatoes were heaven on crispy French bread. We didn't touch our dinner rolls so I can't comment on that. For my entree, I had the Florida snapper special, in a tomato broth with summer squash. My husband had the prime aged rib eye and a side of bacon simmered brussel sprouts. My fish was crispy and light, despite being a firm fish, and my husbands steak was cooked perfectly. I stole some of his vegetable because they were so delicious. I ate everything on my plate, which doesn't happen often after splitting one appetizer, let alone two. We couldn't eat another bite so we skipped dessert, but I've had the desserts here many times and they never disappoint. If you want a fancy dinner to remember, come here. Will it be expensive? Yes -- but you aren't just paying for dinner. You get a dining experience not too many places in CT can replicate. Apparently this restaurant doesn't listen or doesn't care! I attended a luncheon with 48-60 people today 09/13/2018. The diners were offered a choice of Salmon or Cobb Salad or NY Strip Steak. I ordered NY Strip Steak. I told the waiter NO SALT, NO BUTTER, NO SEASONING! MEDIUM. When my Steak arrived it was covered in seasoning. Apparently the waiter didn't give the message to the chef OR as in the case with other restaurants the meat sits overnight in SALT to soften the meat. And BUTTER to give it a better taste. read more

Compared to another restaurant that I'd been to recently, this one certainly has much better customer service. The staff here are friendly and accommodating, and their prices are also pretty reasonable. I've eaten here a few times over the years, and have always enjoyed several of their pasta dishes which they serve. My only suggestion is for them to maybe incorporate a bit more gluten-free products into their menu. Overall though, my experience here at Max has always been very pleasant. And it's also nice to see how vigilant they're being towards ensuring sanitation and cleanliness efforts, even though I'd opted for the take-out option. This continues to be one of my favorite occasional take-out places whenever I am passing through downtown Hartford, which isn't all that often. read more

Nice to return to an older standby and see that the service and food still measure up to a great dining experience. This steakhouse does it right and has a solid selection of steaks, chops and fish to choose from in a varied menu that changes from time to time. The chef changed the creamed spinach preparation and it was not anywhere near what that dish use to be, and it use to be among the best I've ever had. No problem for the waiter, he deducted the charge from the bill when I asked about the change in preparation. Tower of seafood appetizer for 4 was excellent, caesar salad was excellent. On a busy evening our table received constant attention and this was worth the visit downtown. read more

My friends and I came here for the annual Taste of Hartford event, and we were not disappointed. For the fixed price menu, the portions were very generous, which we liked a lot. Some restaurants are cheap about it which was why we chose a nicer restaurant. The fixed price menu was $30.16 (16 for 2016) per person, and consisted of an appetizer, entree, and dessert. Drinks not included. I ordered a salad appetizer, and my friends ordered gazpacho, and peach burrata. The most prominent thing about this dinner was the phenomenal service we received. The server was amazing, super attentive and friendly. Not only our server, the other servers worked as a team to assist each other when the other was busy. One male server noticed that half our table members had cleared plates, while the other half of us still had our plates. He immediately asked if we wanted them taken away, and we agreed. In my eyes, that was outstanding, and indicates that these servers are trained well and are dedicated to providing top notch service. For entrees, our table ordered the NY strip ($10 upgrade) with creamed spinach, colossal shrimp calamarata (handmade pasta-delicioso!!) with swiss chard, roasted chicken and corn risotto. Everything was scruptious and we ate every last bite. Definitely felt that we would have a food coma later on... but well worth it!! We paired our dinner with a bottle of Sauvignon de Loire ($30). As dinner service went on, the lights gradually dimmed throughout the evening to set the mood with the sunset. The design inside the restaurant made you feel like you could be at a NYC restaurant! My favorite thing about the restaurant (besides the food & service) were the floor to ceiling windows. The views gained from this design is simply great! Now onto dessert... We each had vanilla creme brulee and whipped lemon ricotta cheesecake with blueberries. The cheesecake was more of a deconstructed cheesecake, not a solid piece of cheesecake which was kind of cool. If you're still with me, wow you're dedicated!! This restaurant lives up to its name, and everything was great. Food, service, and atmosphere, 5 stars. OMG! Max's was delicious. We stopped here before a concert. We started with the appetizer sampler. All of the seafood was nice and fresh, they also had different sauces for the varieties of seafood on the platter. The cocktail I ordered was pretty good also. For dinner I tried the filet mignon. OMG again! It was one of the best steaks I've had. I usually get filet mignon when I visit nice restaurants that have a good reputation for steaks. All of the staff was accommodating and friendly. This was my first time in Hartford but this place had good reviews so we decided to give it a try. I'm so glad we did. I SO wish we had one of these in DC. If I ever have a reason to go back to Hartford Max's will definitely be one of my first stops. read more

I had dinner here last night and am here again tonight. I'll return several more times over the next few weeks while I'm in town. 'Nuff said. But, wait, there's more! Tonight's special grilled stonington calamari over a salad of lightly-dressed chopped arugula, shaved fennel, castelvetrano olives, cherry peppers, chicory, and lemon oil (ordered and served without the roasted garlic) is exactly the kind of creative, complex, compelling, and delicious dish that should be on the regular menu. Dial back the heat a little, and add a little char to the squid, and, Max, you've got something that other restaurants will copy. Also, sitting in the bar is quite comfortable. The servers are great (thanks, Liz!), the drinks are large and well-mixed, and the Jazz is neither too loud nor too jazzy. I have also enjoyed the salmon entrée and the haddock riff-on-chowder entrée. On the latter, I say go easy on the salt, chef, because the thick, slab bacon -- or was it cured pork? -- adds to saltiness. But, the chopped veggies showed great knife skills in the kitchen. The chocolate chip ice cream cake is great. It is really four tastes of dessert in one: chocolate, brownie, vanilla chip ice cream, and caramel. But I don't "get" the tall-food phenomenon that so many joints present these days -- give dessert to me horizontal, Baby. All of the desserts look interesting. Offer a to-go dessert, and my hotel room would be so much better! I thought the caesar salad was overdressed and garlicky, but I am sensitive to the consequences (i.e., dragon breath today, much to the dismay of my colleagues). The lettuce was crisp, and the croutons were delicious. Anchovies were well balanced. Overall, a winner. Five stars for innovation, service, and atmosphere. *Almost* five stars on execution but for the garlic in the Caesar salad and salt in the deconstructed chowder. Price/Value? Not bad. Good for expense accounts or a hot date with a foodie. I hope this review was constructive. Not trying to be snarky. This place is great and would be even better with a few tweaks. read more

Someone once asked me what my favorite restaurant in Hartford was. At first I thought it was a question I could not answer. There are so many different things i like to eat. My favorite dinner out is a great steak for which I go to Max Downtown. Their Prime Aged Rib Eye is unbeatable. Although, sometimes I want a romantic dinner of a shellfish tower and fresh fish. Huge fan of these, particularly the seared scallops, at Max Downtown. Either way, the Brussel sprouts are a necessary addition. On occasion I am looking for a quick lunch in a nice dining room. Then I get the gumbo or chicken Cobb Salad at, you guessed it, Max Downtown. Or, on a cold winter day, I like chili or beef stew and nobody makes those better than Max Downtown. Then there are the times I want a burger and a beer. Then I go to the Tavern at Max Downtown for a Dry aged prime beef burger or a scrumptious Brisket burger. But there are also times in want wine or a martini and a light bite at a piano bar so I go to....wait for it...wait for it...Max Downtown. Hmmmm, no matter what I want to eat, it appears Max Downtown is a winner. Great service, amazing food. It is my first choice pretty much any time. read more

I agree with all the other 1 star posts. I waited 10min for the valet. Then walked in told the hostess was under 1 of 2 names, she said oh yes.. are u joining them? Like DUH! Who else would I be joining? Then i sat down. The rest of my party was 10 min early for our reservation. My party told me when I sat down at the exact time of the reservation that the server said well i hope your other guests arrives soon because the kitchen closes in 30 min.. like what? First of all dont let people make a reservation 30min before closing if its an issue and why is your staff making that comment like we were not on time. Now we order the appetizers... three times during us eating the apps the busser came over and asking to clear the plate? Like we arent even half threw. The third time i looked at her and said yes im still eating and do not ask me again and stop rushing me. Ive had the food for 10min. We finished the apps and the main came which was fine. Also we had to ask 3 times for bread and it when it finally came it was all hard. We got desert too. After the bill cane the server asked if anyone valet the car. I gave him the ticket and he said we will get that pulled up for you so the car is nice and warm as it was a very cold evening. 15min later the valet guy came over to the table and was like heres your keys and pointed outside where he parked my car. Like are u kidding me? Thats your valet. I will never be dining here again. The service, rudeness from start to finish was appalling! One of my favorites for my wife and I to really treat ourselves. When my son joined us the restaurant staff, manager and chefs all made sure he meal was prepared in a safe way- he has a peanut allergy. I just hosted a dinner party for work here - 17 guests. A forgetful night at a usually wonderful restaurant. Terrible service, never offered bread or anything other than tap water. Our drinks came after our food was served. It's like we were forgotten about, maybe because the tables around us had large parties. Waited over 20 minutes for our waitress apply our points to our MAX vantage card. We have come here many times and have always had wonderful experiences. Unfortunately not tonight, a dinner for 2 ( that cost us almost 300 dollars) should come with better service. Over the years I have been to Max Downtown many of a times for different events and occasions. As of recently I have been attending their happy hour at the bar. There is a certain traditional, old school vibe to the establishment that is easily recognizable from the moment you walk through the doors. The waiters are all very professional and great you with warm smiles. When sitting at the bar you are given a plate of "snacks" which include olives, mixed dry roasted nuts, and spiced cheddar crackers. The variety of snacks are delightful and satisfying. I find the best part of sitting at the bar during happy hour is being able to watch and smell the bartenders prep all of the fresh ingredients for their cocktails. The aromatics of the fresh squeezed citrus and the fresh herbs is intoxicating! The happy hour food and drink offerings are always great. There is a little bit of everything for everyone, whether you enjoy tequila over bourbon...they have you covered. If beer is more your speed then you are in luck. The beer offerings are your typical $3 Coors Light bottle and selected draft beers. Their food offerings change monthly, but one thing that does not change are their $1 oysters. They typically offer the Blue Point variety of oysters. The plate sizes are reasonable and satisfy the post work appetite. One of my favorite drinks that is traditionally offered is the "Max Manhattan", a must try if you enjoy a well craft Manhattan. Aside from happy hour, Max Downtown has a wonderful dinner menu. Max's is the perfect place to celebrate an anniversary or special event. The waitstaff makes the moment special and provides top notch service. The entrees are always consistently delicious and presented beautifully. I have also visited with a group of about six friends, which was easily accommodated by the restaurant. I do recommend making reservations ahead of time. Max Downtown is one of my favorite fine dining establishments located in downtown. Their food and service makes them a cut above the rest. Came here with a group after work. Kind of your typical downtown steakhouse, but great quality. We split the buffalo mozzarella, tuna tartare, and fries. All were tasty. I went with the scallops, served with pork belly, and veggies. I also got a side of roasted cauliflower. Nothing disappointed. Others tried the salmon, tuna, a variety of steaks, and even a hamburger. Nobody had a negative complaint. For dessert, we split a baked Alaska, creme brûlée, and a plate of cookies. Again, everything tasted was delicious. If you're willing to pay steakhouse prices, you could do a lot worse than Max's. read more

This service is very fast and checks up on you multiple times so you never have to call them over and the food is so so so good everything here is really good and the truffle fries with garlic aioli to die for I recommend coming here read more
