As far as ambiance, it was a very busy restaurant. We waited and were eventually seated. To be expected on the island on a Saturday morning. One mom stayed with her kid at a table after eating for over an hour just sitting. I know she's "entitled" but also, come on! That grinds my gears. People were hungry and waiting this is long island! Move along... So honestly the "ambiance" or I should say environment made me anxious and feel constrained by tight quarters instead of relaxed. Maureens is very nostalgic for me. My best friend and I have eaten here together since we were young and the food has always been amazing. So much so, that you can almost guarantee a line out the door and some sort of wait (totally worth it though!) They are cash only so prepare ahead of time. They always have an awesome pancake selection and my personal favorite is Pistachio. They also have incredible granola that is a must try! Fabulous sandwiches as well. Can't go wrong here. My sister & I had to persuade our parents to try some place out of their usual "go toplaces; it was a huge risk we were willing to take. I'll make this as short and sweet as I can. Drove 8 miles from port Jeff (each way) to get to Maureen's kitchen early enough to get a seat. 3rd customer to arrive, was greeted, ordered food, went to restroom. First restroom on left was filthy. Urine and pubic hair on seat. As well as a puddle of urine on floor in front of bowl. Immediately used the 2nd restroom on the right. No urine, but a group of fruit flies had to be shooed away from the toilet seat. Considering the fact I was the first customer to utilize the rest room; it's obvious that the filth came from one of the employees who didn't clean up after them selves or even worse, the facility wasn't properly cleaned from previous day. To make matters even worse, after I used the second restroom, there was no toilet paper.. in either one of the two dispensers. I had to pull my pants up and over my $hit covered a$$ and enter the dining room. The first bathroom I turned away from was my immediate option to retrieve a sanitary wipe for myself, but that door was locked with someone inside. I literally had to enter the dining room and grab a napkin off one of the tables. I was a walking health code violation and it makes me sick, and should make every and anyone else sick as well. I handled my business with a dinner napkin, washed my hands and went to the bar top where my food was waiting and asked to speak to a manager. No manager on site, no surprise . Third world experience from a place that has fed millions of ppl over the decades. As a professional who has run restaurants ranging from The Ritz Carlton, to Tellers Chophouse, Morton's steakhouse and more for over 15 years; I know well enough to have declined my food. In my mind I'd like to ask for reimbursement for the gallon of gas I used to drive from port Jeff, as well as a new pair of underwear, but I'll find peace in knowing I can warn others instead. Maureen's Kitchen is a classic! The cow theming is so unique and it's a great experience every time I come. A little tip I've learned is to grab a seat at the counter when they are super busy! I personally think it's cooler to sit there since you can watch the food being cooked. I got a classic grilled cheese with tomato (which was a double decker sandwich) with fries, and my mom got the roast beef sandwich. All the workers are so kind and helpful as well! It's a great, family friendly atmosphere in a fun building & can get crowded on weekends---Our party ordered a variety of brunch items and felt the savory items lacked seasoning. It's the most important meal of the day. Or it WAS, at some point. But like every assumed truth you grew up with, the purpose of breakfast has been added to my bucket of existential crises. These days, I don't usually eat my first meal until noon or so. Not because I'm one of these intermitting fasting fanatics with their 12/8/4 or 6/18 or whatever they're calling their program. It turns out, I'm usually not that hungry shortly after I wake up. And not always because of a regrettable round of midnight Mallomars. But I LOVE breakfast. It's my favorite meal of the day. Pancakes for dinner? An Egg McMuffin at 3pm? This is America! Now, I can make a good breakfast. I whipped up that French omelette with Boursin cheese and potato chips made famous on "The Bear," and my buttermilk pancakes rival those of any IHOP. But I do enjoy the indulgence of being served, and sometimes I'm not in the mood to do my own cooking, and sometimes I want to just get the hell out of the house. Which brings us to breakfast restaurants. And Maureen's, specifically, which is an alternative to the not-quite-as-ubiquitous-as-years-past diner scene. Just about everyone within a 25-mile radius of Maureen's has HEARD of Maureen's, and if you show up between, say, 9am and noon on a Saturday or Sunday (or even during the week), it might feel as if everyone within a 25-mile radius of Maureen's is AT Maureen's. So if you possess the patience to wait up to 40 minutes for a table, you'll be rewarded with some of the better breakfasts you can find, other than that French omelette with Boursin cheese and potato chips I mentioned earlier, if you're into that sort of thing and I'm available to whip one up for you. The offerings at Maureen's can be loosely categorized into (1) traditional breakfast combos (eggs and/or French toast and/or pancakes plus meat plus potato), (2) omelettes, (3) breakfast sandwiches, (4) none-of-the-above breakfast options (oatmeal, muffins), (5) lunch, (6) anything else I forgot to mention because I never look further on the menu. I said LOOSELY categorized. In the past I would hit up the combo options because making choices is an existential crisis even more dire than the purpose of breakfast. For years the only combo available was called the "#1," which includes juice, toast, coffee, two each of eggs/bacon/sausage, and home fries. Eventually they added a #2 and a #3, but the #1 was my go-to, even though I couldn't understand how any human could eat more than one of those sausages, which are bigger than Andre the Giant's middle finger. When I first discovered Maureen's, the #1 cost 8 bucks or so; at my last visit it was around $18. The oatmeal is a standout option but be warned that it's a hearty slab from a dense baked loaf, not a poured bowl of the traditional Quaker variety. It's served with warm milk you can pour over it, or I suppose you can drink it if you're into that sort of thing, and I hope you're not. My love of the French omelette with Boursin cheese and potato chips aside, I'm not really a fan of omelettes, so I tend to avoid them. They are, however, quite popular and there are several combinations available, including as a rotation of specials, If you're a huge fan of pancakes, especially a huge fan of huge pancakes, then you won't be disappointed by the dinner plate-sized discs that Maureen's offers in a variety of options. The only version of pancake disappointment you WILL experience is being defeated by a full trio of pancakes that no healthy human appetite can conquer. (Fortunately, you can opt to order a single or pair of pancakes instead.) Lately, I've been finding a satisfying bang for my buck in the egg sandwiches. I used to avoid this part of the menu because I'd be like, "I can get an egg sandwich at any deli! Why would I order such a trifle at a classy establishment such as this?" However, the egg sandwiches at Maureen's are not much more expensive that what you'll get at your local Bagel Boss/King/Chalet/Emporium, and are of a much higher quality. The service is remarkable, considering the volume. If you're alone (sigh) or a couple, consider the counter, where you might get served quicker and you'll also have a view of the food being prepared, from the legion of bacon to the mountain of home fries. I don't go to Maureen's often, but it never disappoints -- as long as you steel yourself for the long waits, often-challenging parking situation, and cash-only policy. Went on a sunny Friday morning for some breakfast at this cow-themed diner. Although there are a range of reviews, let's discuss my experience. The parking lot has ample spots. The restaurant is adorable with a cow themed motif. It was very crowded but we had no problem being seated immediately. We chose to sit on the porch which was quite pleasant and less noisy. Our table was not level and shook most of the meal. The restaurant was clean and the bathrooms were decent. Our server was lovely and friendly. We ordered the Eggplant, Asparagus, Roasted Pepper & Mozzarella omelette, one with all egg whites and both NO cheese. We substituted the home fries and toast for lettuce and tomato (both were required to give up to get the tomato and lettuce). We also ordered 2 coffees. The coffee came in a large mug which I like. The coffee had a faint taste of hazel nut which I found pleasant but my wife found a bit vinegary. When the omelettes were served they both had cheese on it. No worries, and with apologies, the food runner retrieved the plates and took them away. A minute later, our main server returned with the plates. She explained that the kitchen "scrapped" the cheese off the top and being that "the cheese was only a slice melted on top", the meal was good to go. The regular eggs seemed fine. No cheese residue and the omelette stayed intact. The egg white omelette was ripped at the top from the scrapping. Trying to be accommodating, we forged ahead to eat. Unfortunately the omelette with the egg whites did have some cheese inside the omelette. The waitress immediately ordered a new one and was so, so apologetic. It was just odd. Both omelettes should have just been re-done. It just felt a bit cheap. The omelettes themselves were good. A bit skimpy on the vegetables within the omelette, but good. Would I say this was the best breakfast I've had? Far from it, but still good. At the end of the meal, we were told that they ONLY accept cash! No credit cards at all! But...they had ATM machine inside if we had no cash. (Now luckily I always carry cash, but most people, especially after covid, don't carry cash. So many people had to go to their ATM and withdraw cash and pay double ATM fees...which you know people will be annoyed about this added expense and undoubtedly the servers will be compromised with the tip they receive). Here's the thing, there is ONLY a tiny sign about this cash policy on the far side of the front door when you enter. I searched everywhere....No sign inside, on the menu, etc. Plus, the sign is on the wrong side of the door when people enter. Due to the poor placement of the sign and it's size, I guarantee most people have no idea that this is cash only. (See my pic of the sign). So, despite the very cute atmosphere here, the handling of the food order and lack of communication about payment coupled with the food being average, I probably won't return....unless I'm in need of a cow gift for someone-which they conveniently have at the entrance! read more

This traditional diner satisfied all my cravings!! l really wanted a milkshake and man they delivered! The vanilla shake had solid vanilla ice cream with lots of vanilla seeds. The portion was huge and texture was just right - not too watery but not too thick either. The amount of whipped cream was also very generous! The croissant french toast special included cannoli cream and strawberries. Not only was the fruit super fresh and sweet but also the cream was just right in sweetness and mixed with melted chocolate chips! The crossiant itself was chewy too!
