Even though this place has been here for quite awhile this was my first time there as I very rarely go out for breakfast, though they serve both breakfast and lunch. I got there a bit after 8am on a Tuesday morning and about the half the tables were filled with a mix of families, working people and I'm guessing a few retirees. Many must be regulars since they were greeted by name. I sat at the counter so as not to take the only remaining table for two that was available. I was greeted immediately and given a regular menu and a specials menu. A cup of coffee almost magically appeared and I have to say it was one of the best cups of restaurant coffee I've ever had! They have an extensive menu, everything from pancakes to waffles, eggs in every iteration you can imagine, to oatmeal! I decided on a spinach/mushroom/onion omelet with home fries a side of bacon and rye toast. You choose omelets come with one filling, additional are $1 each. The omelet was good but was helped by some salt & pepper. The home fries were tasty with just the right amount of onion but the bacon was overcooked for my taste though I know many people like theirs extra crispy. There were two waitresses and they both were friendly and attentive. By the time I was ready to leave every table was taken but there were still seats at the counter. Now I know why the parking lot is almost always full, especially on the weekend. If you are looking for Home Town restaurant with good food & great coffee this is the place for you! read more

Despite its location in busy downtown Islip, private parking, which can get a little crowded on busy days, such as weekend mornings however tables turn over quite quickly, so bring your patience. Old style counter dining is also available for single diners or those who just want to enjoy the best cup of coffee I found on Long Island. The staff seem to be a constant at this place for I always see familiar faces behind the counter or serving at the tables. Great for groups, especially after church or sports. Very small dining room so as mentioned, you may have to wait a short while, but the turnover is pretty quick. Food comes out hot,fresh, great portion size and priced accordingly. Love the kitchy, decor, and all of the signage that includes every coffee, pun known to (wo)man. I've always wondered about their business hours, especially when I see Liquor behind the counter and a dartboard. Starting to think they may run special groups out of this location, but I'm not sure. If you can't park in the parking lot, there is safe street parking and again just an all-around great experience when it comes to diner cuisine. read more

Less options than an Oconee, but much less busy. I got one of the salads converted to a wrap, and my kid got the grilled cheese which came with an ice cream. We will definitely be back! read more

I love Hometown Cafe! It's more affordable than the diners nearby and the food and service is fast and prompt and friendly! Constant refills of coffee and always service with a smile! It's a small spot but you're never waiting more than 15-20 minutes since fast service is there niche! I love their pancakes but decided on avocado toast this time and absolutely loved it, the iced coffee was perfect and kept me alert for my Saturday shift. I had a very enjoyable experience at this food and drink establishment. I personally ordered a Reuben sandwich with fries and my wife ordered a chef salad. The food was amazing and the service was equally amazing. I also like that they serve breakfast until 3pm, so the entire menu is available practically all day. Although this establishment has been here for awhile this was my first visit. Met my daughter for a light lunch and since she's on a tight schedule they were extremely accommodating and happily took our order over the phone before our arrival . Within a few minutes of us sitting down our order was brought to our table ! Extremely pleasant and friendly employees ! The restaurant is small and cozy with a handful of tables . There is also a counter area with stools with a quaint bar ! There is an extensive menu with breakfast items , sandwiches , wraps , burgers , salads and more. Unfortunately the vegetarian options are very meager ! Since time was limited I had the Garden Omelet, it was very good with lots veggies ,it Included tasty home fries . The coffee was pretty good too !Just so you know they stop serving breakfast around 1:30-2. My daughter got the minestrone soup which she said was a bit bland, but it looked like it had plenty of veggies in it . I think this is a nice alternative than going to the diner ! read more

I'm not from the island but upon a visit w/ my brother, who happens to live in East Islip, I decided to pop into the Hometown Cafe for some breakfast. My brother has never been here but he is now going to make it a point to come back. They have amazing omelets!! And for four people, under 30 bucks? Come on! I wish this place was near my house but looks like I'll have to come back again for another visit! When entering, the girl just stood there, didn't say hello or how many people just stood there . When the table became available she just said follow me, put the menus on the table and left. Terrible customer service on her part. Our waiter was pretty great and the food was just ok. I would not recommend simply based on their customer service. The hostess needs to be properly trained to say hello, have a nice day, how big of a party.. just basic customer service skills. read more

I'm not the biggest breakfast person in the world but I got a very good deal when I came here for an egg sandwich and some home fries for a total of two people the bill was under $30. That's a freaking steal now and the food is very flavorful. Definitely returning but if you do come here just know if you pay with card they do charge like a 3% fee. That's why this place is only getting four stars instead of five so bring cash. read more

We are moving to the area shortly so we have been stopping in here to eat. The staff is always so so friendly and welcoming. The food is served quickly and always very good. Even when it's busy they are very attentive. They have a big bar to eat and drink at. A bunch of tables also. They have a dart board and serve dinner which I have yet to try. The bathroom is always super clean which is a plus. Definitely a great place to keep coming back too. read more

The prices on the menu aren't what you are charged. When it says add one are a dollar then you get charged 1.50. I know it's only 50 cents but when you see random fees tacked on as well it irritating. Update your menu or honor what you advertise.... read more

Love Hometown Cafe!!! Breakfast is incredible and the prices are very reasonable! For lunch I recommend the Turkey Reuben with either Sweet potato fries or a side salad. Yum yum yum - so quaint and soo absolutely cute. The guy in the overalls bellied up to the bar was just the cherry on top - walked in and it was pretty crowded - we found the last table and took a seat the table was not really wiped down but we just grabbed the busboy and he wiped it down no problem - ordered eggs Benedict and an omelette with a side of sausage - came out in no less than 7 minutes! Waitresses were very nice and courteous but mistakenly brought two sides of sausage and charged us for both but it didn't really make a difference it was so delicious that we ate it all up anyway! This is a very basic place nothing special at all. It is true on the other posts about small Portion sizes, example the large order of Pancakes look like something you would get from the kids menu. From are food and the other people eating around us I do not get the impression they spend much time making there food from scratch. I just moved out to the area and took a Sunday morning drive just exploring Montauk highway. Got Hungry around 8am and found this place on the road with my girlfriend. We sat at the counter because it was busy at the tables (a good sign) and were treated warmly from the second we walked through the door to the signature on the check. Perfect spur of the moment stop on a Sunday morning. All of the staff was very warm, welcoming and professional, particularly the young man at the counter. We're definitely coming back! read more

Horrible service. Starting with asking the host for a table, she was very dismissive and it was such a awkward interaction. We were seated within 10 min however people we're crammed in with zero effort made to adhere to social distancing. Everyone was literally back to back with other tables. Finally we sat for at least 15 min with no one coming to even ask our drink order. We noticed three other groups of people come in after us and we're waited on without them paying any attention to us. Finally a waitress saw us, said hi as she busily rushed past. We tried to tell her we needed waited on and she was too rushed to even stop and listen. We waited for her to come back and she rushed over to another table that was sad after us. At that point we got up to leave and not one single staff member stopped to ask why. We told the host as we left no one waited on us and she was not apologetic, just repeated what we said shocked. Horrible service. Will be reporting to NY state for not adhering to social distancing and will never be returning for lack of service. read more

I had heard the staff of Poppy's in Islip opened up Hometown Cafe but hadn't had a chance to visit until now. I had breakfast here today and it was delicious. Had an omelette with spinach, onions and feta cheese. The home fries were yummy with bits of crunchiness. My husband had the banana pancakes which he also thought was excellent. The coffee was solid and all in all, it was a very positive food experience. Our waitress Heather was very sweet and attentive. I'm happy for Hometown Cafe but sad that Poppy's is not doing as well since I'm in Islip and prefer to patronize local businesses. However, it's worth the short drive to go to Hometown Cafe. I'm curious to see if the food is as good for non-breakfast fare. For now, this is the place I'd go for breakfast over Oconee Diner and most definitely over Poppy's. The sweet potato fries looks like they are fresh not frozen. I was impressed. Customer service was also great. We had a vet nice young man wait on us. They also seem to have a full bar. .
