I live a couple of blocks from the place and have been walking by it quite often - seemed like a decent place from the outside. Boy was I wrong... After reading some other reviews, I can see how people are satisfied with the food. The quality of food itself is not bad, but nothing special. The whole experience went south as soon as I walked through the door. The waitress wanted to sit us next to a woman and a child with less than a foot of space between the tables. I asked for a different table by the window where it seemed like it was far away from the crowd (nice and comforting) and she gave me some BS excuse as to why we cannot sit there. Any business owner knows that customer is always right and should get what he wants. I didn't want to sit next to a kid yet alone that close. Right there and then I knew this wasn't going to be a good experience. We stayed and ate anyway... and I must say I regret it. My girlfriend was upset the whole time because of our waitress' attitude and the kid sneezing all over the place with a mouth full of food. Decor is terrible and there is no comforting (family-friendly) feeling there what-so-ever. I'm not sure what the other reviewers are talking about... I ordered the lunch special salmon teriyaki with mixed sashimi. Whoever said food portions were small wasn't kidding. Food wasn't cheap but wasn't too expensive either. Lunch special + bento box + salmon sushi was $28. Lastly, although I go to sushi places for food not for atmosphere, the overall experience was horrible. I DO NOT recommend this place. Probably some of the best sushi in the Pasadena area. The family run restaurant is a pretty busy place, with mom and dad running the cashier, and the two sons as the sushi chefs. Definitely try out the Omakase, they have excellent judgment on what you will and won't like. They have everything from the ultra traditional to the new and "Californian". I'd recommend trying out either the Salmon or the Red Snapper with Lemon and Seasalt ... it's an amazing combination on a traditional nigiri. The cuts of fish are excellent as well. Probably some of the best Yellow Tail Toro and Blue Fin Toro I've had in a long time. Lastly, finish off your meal with the Uni. It's cold, sweet, and succulent. I really try to be nice when reviewing places...but I also appreciate the truth, especially when it comes to having a good meal. This place is very near our apartment and we've been meaning to try it for a while...about 2 weeks ago we finally did and whoa, we were so disappointed. We only ordered rolls and vegetable tempura, but the fish just didn't taste fresh, and it wasn't easy on the eyes either. The vegetable tempura wasn't bad, but how do you mess up vegetable tempura? The reason I'm giving this place 1 star instead of none is due fully to the fresh brewed iced green tea. I'm all about green tea, so even I can get unlimited refills of the iced version, I'm a happy camper. We will most certainly not be returning to this place, nor recommending it to anyone. read more

Came here on a Tuesday night, so it wasn't even that busy. There were a few empty tables, but the service was still slow. Not once did the waitress come by on her own to see how we were doing or refill our drinks. The sushi was actually pretty good, above average. They had some special roll, so we decided to try it... it has Siracha and mayonaisse on it.. and it tasted horrible. If you do come here, do not get that. But all the other sushi (rolls and non-rolls) was good. Price for the quality wasn't about average I think, around $60 or something for 2 people. I just ate here the other night with some friends. I didn't think the food was that great. Everyone at my table agreed that they've been to better sushi places. The service was very slow. Our server was nice; however, they kept messing up our orders. Some of the food items came so quickly (like 20 mins after ordering) and some didn't come until we kept asking our server for our order (like 1 hr). Overall, I don't think I would be coming here again, nor would I recommend this place to anyone. AKA "Pasadena Delicious Sushi" to my dining partner and me. What? It's true. The sushi here is possibly the best and freshest I've ever had. This place has excellent quality but in a more laid back atmosphere with reasonable prices. We opt for the sushi bar. The sushi chefs are personable and friendly; they're always happy to make conversation, and they remember us each time we show up. In fact, a lot of the patrons seem to be "regulars". Understandable when the quality is so consistently good. The only snafu we've encountered was when the sushi bar was full. We requested a table for 4 (even though there were just 2 of us) so we could sit side by side. Aww. Anyway, nope, no dice. Despite it being pretty late on a weeknight and the restaurant being nowhere near full, NO DOUBLE TABLE FOR YOU. But that's okay. We stuck it out and sat at the sushi bar which was a better choice anyway. Make sure to nom the salmon sushi with lemon and sea salt. It doesn't sound that magical, but let me tell you, IT IS. We usually go for the aforementioned salmon, blue fin tuna, yellowtail, saba, ika, and sometimes tamago or albacore. It is all scrumptious. Scrumptious enough, in fact, that I'm actually using the word "scrumptious", which is totally ridiculous but also entirely appropriate to describe Pasadena Delicious Sushi's fishy goodness. Note this review is based on the service not the food. food was ok. not in any way amazing but their service killed it. We had a waitress that was mediocre at best and then were completely ignored at the end of the meal. Good sushi made by real Japanese chefs. The way they cut the sushi is very clear. The prep of the sashimi, rice, seasoning really makes the difference between real and fake/imitation sushi. A lot of fake Japanese restaurants (those run by Chinese or Koreans who have never served an apprenticeship in a sushi restaurant) charge full price but serve crap that looks sort of like "authentic" Japanese. This is my new favorite sushi place! But not because it's cheap or the portions are generous. You get Japanese service and fresh sushi. And at a fair price Sushi lesson #1: Maki rolls are made from tuna. Yellow fin tuna. It's red etc. But this place sells the blue fin. If you go to a sushi place, it ain't all that unless they serve this and serve it well. This fish gets funky if not very fresh. And they will not serve the bland (and cheap) yellow tuna. Even our bento boxes that came with "sushi" came with three pieces of fatty blue fin. I highly recommend their bento boxes as their sushi plate of blue fin comes with five pieces for $14. Miso lesson #1: their miso soup comes with clams! Very traditional. Not very clammy but just right. Drink this right away as this is best servd hot. Beer lesson #1: a new Japanese beer for you Kirin and Sapporo lovers is Yebisu. Light with lots of flavor. A must try. Dining lesson #1: make a reservation. The saturday before Valentine's there was a descent line. We had reservations for four. A few minutes after getting their attention, we were seated next before everyone else that had not made a reservation. We felt like superstars! This night due to the crowd, it was very busy. Not As Good As I Was Told. The review is based on table seating for dinner, whereas I usually prefer sushi bars for the fish. I would have to say I was disappointed after hearing good things and how much better this place was supposed to be than a few local competitors - Not so. If you are a sushi lover - who knows good sushi, do yourself a favor and stay away from this place. Here is my evidence: Firstly - If you like to eat at the bar, don't do it here. These guys are extremely rude and not sociable. I was by myself with NOBODY else at the bar. My phone rang - so I took the call. It was my girlfriend. About 10 minutes into my conversation another person showed up at the bar at which point the sushi chef asked me to hang up my phone. Wow! I personally don't like loud talkers on the phone, but I was being quiet. That's like a cop tailing you at 80 mph for 10 minutes and then after then 10 minutes - pulling you over. Secondly - If you like Maki Style Rolls Stay AWAY! They don't have any fusion type rolls - except for your standard issue stuff like the Caterpillar Roll, Crunchy Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, etc... Boring! So I asked the chef to make something not on the menu and he made a the following roll inside out style: Inside: Shrimp tempura and cucumber Outside: Spicy King Crab mixed with mayonnaise and Siracha It wasn't bad, but when I received the check - they charged me $24 for this single roll! Yikes! ***At this point you might be thinking that my opinion already is biased by all the above, but I'm trying to be as objective as possible. Lastly - Their Toro was sub par. It tasted and smelled fishy. I noticed that someone else 3 reviews down from mine had a similar experience, so I'm not crazy! Honestly, I would expect more from a Japanese owned Sushi Restaurant, but this place fell WAY short of my expectations. I was unsatisfied with the sushi here. The great ratings on Yelp prompted me to come in to this location, and maybe those reviews were in reference to other menu items, but I cannot attest for the taste of the sushi here. It was very salty, and the wasabi wasnt that great either. On top of that, the prices are a bit much. Unsure if I will return to this location. We took your advice the other day to try it out before a movie in Pasadena. And although we weren't greeted by a ceremonial banging of the drums, we were ushered in by a "Spicy Tuna Bomb," which is a huge dollop of spicy tuna perched upon a crispy shiso leaf which has been tempura'd. Pure genius. In all of my visits to Japan, various Nobus, strip mall sushi, New York sushi have I had such a thing. It's strictly unorthodox, but who cares? The menu is rife with these kinds of fusion offerings, and small, izakaya, or "Japanese tapas" dishes. The sushi itself was good, perhaps not amazing, but sometimes you're in the mood for age dashi tofu, or hamachi kama or whole squid. Anyway, must say, we'll be back at Matsuri. read more

The first piece of Spicy Tuna I popped in my mouth... MMMMM so soft it melted in my mouth!!! Come here for the sushi, and nothing else!!! We ordered 3 sushi rolls and some Udon, and the only downside to the place is the STEEP STEEP prices. I would say the sushi is extremely worthwhile, but the Udon was nowhere near the $10 they charge for. The restaurant itself is adorable, and I'm assuming it's owned by an old Japanese couple. Every time a new guest walks in, the husband runs up to the entrance and bangs on the drums to welcome you. It's tooo cute! there are also a bunch of Japanese figurines on a shelf that makes the place distinct. I would probably come back here if there was some special occasion. Their sushi rolls are just sliiiightly higher than other sushi places, but the quality is so good, I can't really complain. Especially their sashimi... OMG! Beware though, they charge you for the green tea, which we were not aware of. they also seem a tiny bit short-staffed, there was only one waitress when we were there. she was prompt and attentive but I sitll feel like someone else can lessen her slack a bit! Matsuri is right on the corner of Green and Wilson, a few doors down from the studio I work at, Every experience I have had here has been great. First off, it's family owned. If that doesn't get you right there, enjoy your dinner at the mall. The older brothers work the sushi bar, Johnny and Ejii, who both have a great sense of humor. Its been more than once that Ive been sitting at the bar and had some random "samples" fall into my lap to try. When mom comes out from Boston, we go here. When my girl comes to visit me at work and wants to have a quick dinner, we go here. The fish is wonderful, the people are warm and the price is right. Im not looking for Disneyland when I go have dinner, I just want a wonderful meal and pleasant service and they have it at Matsuri. When clients of mine come in to get pierced and want to have a bite to eat in the neigbhorhood, we send them here. Plenty of parking on Green Street as well as in the lot behind the resturant. I always love coming here for lunch during my school break since it's only a few blocks from PCC. The service here is so warm and welcoming. The ladies are such sweet servers. I come here for their lunch special, their chicken and beef teriyaki plate and udon noodle soup are the best. Good portion at a good price. Came here for a small-ish birthday party on Saturday. The food was good (I added a few pictures) and the kitchen was pretty fast getting the food out. I really wanted to get the Matsuri boat (which serves 2) but it's big, so come hungry if you decide to order that. I got a fairly standard beef teriyaki and tempura, and was extremely happy with it. Service was also very attentive the entire time, with hot tea and water refilled frequently. They gave the birthday girl some ice cream with a candle in it, turned off the lights and even sang "Happy Birthday." I didn't order any sushi, but I think other reviewers have covered that. As a few have mentioned, there is a fairly hidden parking lot around the corner on Wilson (think narrow entrance) but it's convenient and it's free! This place has fresh fish and it's good. I like it because it doesn't just have rolls. There are lots of different items to chose from and you can tell the kitchen puts their passion into the dishes. Anyone who says it's not fresh or bad is wrong. They must have had a bad day. Also it makes no sense to complain about the size of the food for the price. It's sushi. It shouldn't be cheap. Best in Pasadena. A bit pricy, but worth it. You want to sit at the sushi bar, not at the tables. Sometimes wait can be a while. If you're one that likes bento box type meal, don't bother. Its just okay. I always order the Spicy Yellowtail Sashimi with Ponzu Sauce, Spicy Garlic Albacore Sashimi, Ika(squid) sashimi, and Unagi Sushi. Their Shi-so Hot is really good (deep fried shiso leaf with spicy tuna on top), I go for extra spicy. The best part is when they have it available, Jun or Eji would fry me up some Spanish Mackerel bones, its crunchy goodness (we call it fish bacon). And I love their Uni Sashimi too. Went here with friends while we visiting California for the first time. While half-Japanese, I am not a sushi person by default. I usually wimp out and order inari or smoked salmon, or what I call "the coward's guide to sushi." My experience at Matsuri has changed all of that, and I am now a go-get-em sushi adventurer! The atmosphere in this Pasadena sushi-joint is intimate and authentic, and the 8-seat sushi bar is a territorial prize. The three sushi chefs are Nisei, children of the Issei owners. Only two were there the evening we went, but they were both friendly, knowledgeable, and skilled with a knife. Our friends are regulars, so they showed us the ins and outs of the menu, but the true joy is in asking for the off-menu items. Be prepared with your wallet, b/c veering off course will cost you, but it's well worth very fair pricing for both quality of food and the skill in preparing it. We started with hamachi (yellowtail) that tasted like melted butter in our mouths, and a blue-fin tuna roll that was robust in flavor and also buttery in texture. Their Matsuri roll combines avocado, tempura shrimp, tempura asparagus, eel, and a dollup of mayo and hot sauce (and probably more that I'm forgetting)... the asparagus adds a delightful crispness and rounds the flavors nicely. At the chef's suggestion, we tried a filet of black cod, broiled in a sweet sauce (ponzu maybe?) that tasted more of candy than fish. It was succulent. The real treat is asking for the sushi chef to surprise you with a one of a kind sushi roll creation. My husband ended up getting something amazing with eel and tuna, and our friend got crab with king crab on top... it really felt decadent. If the chef suggests something- go for it. He won't steer you wrong! From the drum call as you enter, to plate after plate of decadent sushi, Matsuri is an indulgent experience appropriately priced. Set a limit for yourself though - it's easy to say "just one more roll" and end up with a 3-digit bill at the end. Even so, it will still be worth every penny. read more

This place so far is the best sushi place that I've tried. Its really fresh and the sushi chefs are actually Japanese! (how weird is that? haha) It is a bit pricey but when is sushi not pricey? We didn't order any rolls so I dont know how much those cost or if they are any good. We had sweet shrimp with the miso soup, softshell crab, blue fin, yellowtail, red snapper, salmon, albacore, and many more. they have a great variety and are all very fresh. The key to good sushi is fresh ingredients paired with the perfect sticky rice. Matsuri has both! Loved the spicy yellowtail sashimi, it comes with diced jalapeños on top to give it the perfect heat. We sat at the bar and the sushi chefs were friendly and attentive. Only complaint is that the edamame arrived towards the end of our meal and it was overcooked. We love supporting local, family places so we were excited to try. Mom and dad run the front and the two brothers work the sushi bar. Being that it was also Valentines day, the restaurant was packed! When you walk in, there is a sign in sheet, you can mark if you want to sit at the sushi bar (serves sushi only, no entrees dinners) or at a table. Be prepared to get there early or there will be a wait. They take reservations but not for parties of 2 or less and are closed on Sundays. So glad we found this place!! For anyone that's had real sushi at a place owned by actual Japanese people, you just can't go to a place that serves chicken with broccoli alongside california rolls. It's not a knock on other Asian cultures (after all, we're part of this 'other' group), but when it comes to sushi, you gotta leave it to the pros. And thankfully we've found this place. We came at almost 8 one night, and the place was PACKED. We were barely able to get a seat at the sushi bar. Things were off to a great start. With all the yelp reviews, we decided to try their blue fin tuna. AMAZING. You almost can't go back to 'regular' tuna after this..it was soooo buttery and soft it melted in your mouth. You barely had to chew it. We then also got a bunch of our usuals: spicy tuna, spider, spicy salmon, as well as one of their appetizers, a hawaiian-inspired sashimi bowl. Everything was super-fresh, the sushi chefs were super-friendly, and the buzz in the air was one of energy. Kind of hard to find in Pasadena at 9PM.... Yes, the food does get a bit pricey. Most rolls were of a pretty substantial size (i'm sure the softshell crab in our spider roll had been doing some pretty mean pushups in its day), but you'll def end up spending more than at sushi-down-the-block. I ordered a california hand roll, and we both got the dinner combination beef teriyaki and tempura; on the menu it said it came with rice and miso soup, so we ordered a salad on the side. The meal came with a salad, which would've been nice to know so we didn't order an extra. It was a large helping, so he finished his, but I didn't finish mine. The California roll was delicious and the beef teriyaki was very moist. The tempura was the same as pretty much all other tempura I've had. The waitstaff was very friendly and helpful, and banged on a little drum when everyone walked in, which was fun. They were very attentive in refilling our water, and the entire waitstaff wished us goodbye as we left. When it comes to sushi, I'm a huge fan of Salmon and Yellow Tale. And this may very well be the best you'll find outside of Little Tokyo. Ok, new favorite Sushi restaurant. Sushi place by Japanese owners. Nuff said. I'm not knocking on other non-japanese owned sushi bars, but somethings are better in the hands of the people who created it. Came here with the GF last Friday night after a last second ditch effort to go to NODA down the street, BEST decision I made all day. The wait was about 15mins, the tables were filled. but the line wasn't that excessive. Hostess is a old Japanese obaasan who's (as agreed upon by GF & I) too cute. Toooo Cute. Very friendly and very traditional with greeting, introduction and overall interaction. Waiter was friendly, prompt, and efficient. FOOD?? Well the food was simply AMAZING! Chirashi with tempura: the fish was fresh and cut to perfection, not big nor small. The presentation is beautiful in a rectangular box and the tempura is nice and crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The dipping sauce was a little bit on the bland side, but that's ok, the tempura itself was very tasty. The quality of the fish is something else. judging by the pictures on the wall, they often feature freshly caught local fish (tuna, yellow tails, etc). Oh and they had blue fin toro! $15 for 2 piece of sushi. Oh shit! I just shitted myself thinking about. Never have i tasted anything quite like it at any other sushi restaurant. The way the fish melts, the taste of clean fatty fish is simply amazing! simply exquisite! If you've never tired it, if you like buttery fish, try it! Although the Salmon sashimi was very delicious and buttery, GF claims she's had better else where. Hard to believe her. =). The portion is small. as in quantity wise. But with quality that high it's hard to dismiss their portion. The presentation again is very nice. Better then others. Seaweed salad is one of the best if not THE best we've had. Period. Very nice and mild, not overly masked by heavy loads of dressing (ponzu). Nice touch of sesame oil and a nice mix of different kinds of seaweed. Most use the string cut seaweed, but they add several variety that gives it a nice mix and palate pleaser. GF had their Philly Roll (wit cheese, duh). Normally I hate Philly rolls because I think it's a great way for a restaurant to use cheap cuts of fish and mask it with the overpowering taste of cream cheese. However, after much resistance, I was forced to swallow on and oh was it delicious. Still not a terrible fan of Philly rolls in general, but it was mighty tasty! oh they also serve ORGANIC GREEN TEA!! Look, I know a thing or two about TEA, my family is a TEA, I come from a family of TEA and danggit they serve one hell of a cut of Ocha. Very smooth with no sappy after taste as you're accustomed to with other cheap/mixxed green tea. It really clears the palate so you may enjoy other exquisite bits of food.
