Saw this place in a TikTok video for "top 5 black owned fried fish spots" and since my friend and I have been on a mission to find the best fried catfish in LA, we headed over to Pasadena to check it out. Fish was good but service not so much. My friend went in before me because I was taking a video wanted to shout them out on social media but when I walked in the man looked up at me stared for a little bit and went back to loading the fish. I stood there looking at the menu he still never said anything. I finally walked over to my friend and asked if he acknowledged him when he came in and he said yes. I was ready to walk out but he wanted to stay. Stopped by a few weeks ago for the first time as I was craving some Jamaican food nearby. This fish market is no frills and can be concerned a hole in the wall. The gentleman taking my order was kind, but overall service from order to take away was slower than I anticipated. I was sad as I was really craving curry goat, but apparently they sold out 10 min before I arrived, which was at 7pm. Not many places to sit and eat within the market or outside so that was a bummer. If they put some extra money into the market by sprucing up the aesthetics and adding more tables and chairs, I think that this place would do even better. This review is really about the owner, Leroy. I wanted everyone to know what a kind and genuinely compassionate person he is. One of his customers accidentally drove into the wall in the parking lot. Instead of getting upset or angry, Leroy's first reaction was to make sure she was okay. I helped translate for them, and he kept reassuring her, saying, "As long as you're okay, everything else is okay." He told her not to worry about the damage because he was just happy she wasn't hurt. Seeing how shaken and upset she was, he even gave her a quick side hug to comfort her. In a situation where many people would have focused on the accident, Leroy chose kindness and empathy. That says so much about his character. Happy i finally got to try this spot. I love Jamaican food, but unfortunately, it ended up being a little underwhelming. Food: I ordered the tilapia with fries and mac & cheese. The tilapia and fries were fried perfectly and visually looks good, but it was plain, 3/5. The mac & cheese was delicious and savory 5/5. I'm not rushing to go back, but I think I would try it again. I left work early today and on my way home went to the Pasadena Fish Market. It was clean and in order with people from all walks of life in and out or picking up large orders. I don't eat shrimp, but the way he tenderly deveined them made them look mighty special. I may have been tempted to order just one; but I kept my discipline. After doing a little business I was ready to order; oxtails, beans and rice, cabbage, plantain; oh the food was delicious. I never wanted to eat the beans and rice because of previous restaurant experiences; dry, flavorless beans that just sat in their plate looking at me, knowing they would never again be invited to visit my palate! But, I thought I'd take a chance today and order beans and rice, a dish that I've shunned for years. If you're looking for a solid seafood and fixings meal, this is the place to go in Pasadena. I ordered their grilled tilapia plate with collard greens and plantains, and all I gotta say is WOW. Their food is delicious. The fish was cooked perfectly--not too charred, lightly seasoned, and thoroughly cooked. The greens are SO damn good-- not overly sweet (if you're looking for that solid flavor, unlike most places in this area), well-seasoned, and full of flavor. The plantains were also cooked to perfection. The serving sizes are just right--they gave me enough to feed two people. Parking was super easy, and the customer service was good. Let's not forget oxtail is a hot food trend in 2023, so I predict that there will be more people trying this place out this year. The oxtail plate was about $25, and yes, although it was expensive, I will say that it was worth it, however, the next time I might just get the oxtail separately without the sides as the oxtail was filling for me. I also ordered the collard greens and red beans and rice. Both items were good, but the collard greens took the charts on this one! I recommend you order over the phone so you don't have to wait. Pre-2020 this place was slow af, like easily 90 minute wait for some fried fish (and the Jamaican was never passable). Someone else must have taken over at some point because the service got much faster - like 20 minutes at most, large portions, good fish and shrimp (Jamaican still not passable). But now it's back to the same old bs. Pretty sure my order had less food for the same price and everything was super salty. The drink bottle had nasty black stuff all over the rim like mold or mildew. Came to look at the most recent reviews and they're not great, so I just will add this to the ever growing list of places not to order anymore.
