It almost got a 5 star review but we had a few hiccups in the beginning. The restaurant opens at 11am. My family arrived around 11:15am and the front doors were locked. We ran into some kitchen workers and they told us maybe another 30 minutes before their boss came with the key. We eventually got inside and they were slow to get our order. I eventually just wrote out what dishes we wanted. I would avoid the water here if you eat in. The interior is fairly small and very basic. They have some seating inside and we were a party of 7 including 2 kids. Other than that, the food itself is amazing. We knew it probably would have been better to get our food to go but my mom's place doesn't have enough seating. We ordered the pepper beef, orange chicken, chow fun with beef, house fried rice, and some dim sum dishes for the kids we literally have nothing negative to say about the food. There was no parking anywhere close by. I walked in after paying for an online order to see a conditional permit on the door. They gave me the order and one of the dishes had the wrong meat in it. And I've never had issues with the owners or drivers in any negative way But usually when I order I'm too tired to pick it up and since its close by I figure it can't take that long. But each time I've ordered I've had to call and ask where my food is. Which is frustrating because it seems like there's always "something wrong with the system". And they're always apologetic about it but I have no idea whats going on when I order from their own website that the order never gets sent out unless I call to ask where it is. Since they've tried to create an dine-in experience it's made me question a lot of what's going on there. The times I've come to pick up my food, the girl or man behind the counter was incredibly rude. Not at all engaged or welcoming. The place is a mess inside. It's dirty and half finished, depressing. The Egg Drop Soup was subpar... the corn tasted old as did the little fragments of chicken littering the bottom. Ample egg in it, but the soup was uninspired. This is one of those Chinese restaurants where it tastes like they're cooking with dirty water. I wish they had it together, but they don't. I can't recommend this place at all. When it finally arrived, I was excited and found out that the hot steam already makes the orange chicken soggy. On top of that, I could not taste the aroma and the flavor of the orange in the chicken. Pretty much a disappointment at this point. It goes with the rest of the dishes. The vegetables fried rice particularly was bland. I wonder if they had forgotten to put salt or is there something wrong with my tongue. I've driven by Y&J Gourmet so many times and finally saw that they opened their doors. Not interested in cooking for the night, I decided to walk over for a daily special which was their fried noodles that night. I was almost overcharged until I appeared confused, and they corrected the charge quickly. While they were preparing my food, I waited outside at the side door. (Note: At the time of visit, they're still undergoing renovations after an event left their front door unusable.) If you're waiting alone outside at night on the street, though, it may feel a bit unsafe. The fried noodles were alright, and they tasted as expected. They were definitely on the saltier side, but they also tasted homemade which was nice. The BBQ pork slices were a little thin, and it was quite flimsy when compared to traditional BBQ Pork. This hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant was surprisingly good! I order four different dishes for Chinese new year's eve dinner, and they all come out delicious! I went to the shop around 1 pm for a pickup at 5:30 pm. The was ready at the designated time and warm. I ordered four dishes for three people and left with plenty of leftovers. They have Peking Duck, which I ordered once and was nice, but they don't offer any of the accoutrements that usually go with it. I'm not Asian and don't know what else to do with this glorious duck without a wrapper of some sort, scallion, etc. I also wish they offered Mu Shu. It took a lot to get the taste out of my mouth and honestly, I've eaten some funky stuff, but this is truly the most inedible food I've ever had. I also got the Mongolian beef which was wayyy too sweet and not enjoyable in the least. However there was one good item which was the BBQ pork buns. Based on the reviews on Yelp, I walked into the little obviously family run restaurant. It looked like I had stepped into someone's dingy, not dirty - maybe just dated, house. The young man behind the counter asked me if he could take my order. He was friendly and helpful. I have to go for my "go to" at Chinese restaurants!! Kung Pao Chicken and Hot and Sour Soup. My absolute fav's!! He said it would take about 10 minutes. In much less time than that he came through the little obligatory curtain from the kitchen with a bag of food. I was surprised when he said it was mine!! I didn't question him, I took the bag and proceeded to walk the mile (+) back to my hotel. The reason I bring up the distance to the hotel is because I really like my food pretty hot. Specially Chinese food. Actually, cold Kung Pao chicken is pretty damn good too. So I can do either extreme. Very hot or very cold. Either way, I figured that the food would be ruined by the time I hoofed it back to the hotel. I opened my soup and took a sip from the container. I'm now nursing a scalded esophagus, just kidding. But seriously, this stuff must have been nuclear when I left the place to still be that hot by the time I walked to the hotel. The soup was hot and sour. It was amazing. Fresh crispy bamboo shoots, tofu, onion, and I think some sort of mushroom but I inhaled that baby before I had time to examine it. It was incredibly tasty, and HOT!! In truth it may have been a little too salty, but I enjoyed every bite of it, and would absolutely order it again!! Having ravished the soup with relish I turned my attention to the Kung Pao chicken. It too was hot, not as hot as the soup, but still hot. It's my favorite kind of Kung Pao chicken. It has chicken, spring onions, nuts, chili peppers and more chicken smothered in absolute deliciousness!! It too was amazing!!!! I say "was" as if I could finish it!!! Too damn much food!!! But now I have some for breakfast!! I'm so excited, I can't wait for breakfast...if it lasts through the night!! I'd say I like it a lot. Don't let the initial impression of the place throw you off.
