    5. Rare Steak, Brisket and Flank Soup

I'm back! And yes, the food is always good here! So many pho choices all served piping hot! It's a small, busy restaurant, clean and the service is quick. The staff are friendly and efficient. Their banh mi and vermicelli dishes are my back-up orders when I'm not in the mood for pho. Grab a smoothie with optional boba while you're here. They're thick, creamy, and not too sweet. Highly recommend this place! I'm never disappointed.

I love this restaurant. They have the best vercellmi noodles. Service is just alright. They are not too friendly. The place is outdated and needs some upgrades though. It clean and everything made fresh to order.

Solid noodle restaurant with lots of different options and great value. The food was really satisfying and well made, and healthy too. Plenty of indoor seating and friendly staff who are attentive and helpful. The menu is extensive and there is something for everyone.

Came here on a Saturday night and food was so amazing! There's plenty of seating in the restaurant and seemed clean. Server was very attentive with our waters. We ordered the egg rolls which complimented our pho really well. One order comes with five egg rolls and I loved how it was warm, freshly fried. I also ordered the steak, flank, and tendon pho. The meat and noodle portion was great for a regular size although I did feel like there could've been more tendon. I'm so happy that I found an authentic pho restaurant nearby. Highly recommend!

Pho Tai (large) - $18.91 after tax...barely a normal serving of noodles and 3-4 slices of "rare beef" (May 2025)
    Kevin M.

I've eaten here a few times out of convenience, and was mostly mediocre experiences not worth writing a review about. It's noticeably been on a decline over the past year or so, but tonight was too egregious a ripoff to remain silent! Ordered pho tai and "upgraded" to a "large" bowl for a +$2.50 up charge. What I got was nothing more than a somewhat larger volume bowl with perhaps more soup but maybe a few bites shy of an average serving of noodles and literally 3-4 slices of "rare beef"! $18.91 before tip is such a ripoff for a poorly executed optical illusion.

    Decent, lacked salt for me.

Don't expect service with a smile here. Do expect them to give you the check without you having asked - whilst in the middle of eating. Vietnamese coffee - weak and underwhelming. Egg rolls - lacked salt/seasoning Seafood pho - decent

    House Special Beef Pho Soup
    Lucy M.

$15.93 after tax for a large house special beef pho! The beef pho had a clear broth and there was a good amount of meat; wished there was more tripe and tendon inside. The noodles are slightly firm and thus the right texture (for me). Left the place smelling like pho. No wait on a Saturday afternoon. Service was quick and the noodles came out in less than 10 min after putting the order in!

There are plenty of other offerings in the area. I grew up with the chain and have tried various locations. Pho Banh Mi Che Cali generally promises a large selection of affordable various Vietnamese dishes at a super casual environment. No frills and amazing value. Unfortunately, I feel like this location is trying to do a lot of things. They offer Ramen or Chinese soups. There's so many "new item" signs and I really think they are losing their core identity. I'm getting off topic. I ordered the Pho with extra beef. I found the self-ordering kiosk to be easy to use. I was able to pay, grab a number and find myself a seat. While it wasn't a very clean place, it was fine. Where I was disappointed was when I tried the broth of my pho. I think Pho should have been a slam dunk for this restaurant. It's a staple to Vietnamese cuisine, so I'm sorry to report - I thought it was bland. I would say the worst pho in recent memory. The price starts at $12.99, so it's a tad cheaper than a normal sit down, but with the portions I got, i really think it isn't an excuse. I noticed others customers in the restaurant ordered Banh mi. Perhaps that's a better bet.

It comes with chilies and fish sauce for you to pour on top. The rice cakes are served warm and are super smooth and soft. The thai chilies it comes with are spicy so don't use too much. The vermicelli with nem nuong and egg rolls comes with a slab of meat and a whole egg roll. The bottom are the noodles and mix of veggie and herbs. The nem nuong is sweetened charbroiled pork that is grilled. Think of a sweet meat ball. The egg rolls are super crispy and filled with meat. The noodles go well with the fish sauce and there are a lot of veggies inside. The nem nuong coun is a spring roll that's wrapped in rice paper. It has the meat and lettuce wrapped inside and comes with a dipping sauce. I believe the sauce is made with ground shrimp. For $8 for 3 rolls it is a steal compared to other restaurants. If you are craving Brodards in OC this place can satisfy your craving. Their che ba mau which is a 3 bean dessert has a lot of beans inside topped with coconut milk and shaved ice. Not much mung bean either after stirring it literally for about 4 seconds the mung bean basically disintegrated into the liquid. The liquid.. watered down skim milk, not a trace of coconut flavor anywhere. I didn't know you can mess up Che Ba Mau until I had it from here.

Finally got a chance to come-in & I'm glad that I did. Although, I have my "go-to whole-in-the-wall Vietnamese" place in the SFV, there's always room for more businesses to support & Mama Hong's Vietnamese Kitchen - Burbank definitely deserves your patronage. It's a welcome step-up from your typical no-frills Vietnamese place, so the vibe / decor is especially great if you're introducing someone to Vietnamese cuisine for their first time. FOOD **PRO TIP: Go "Family-Style" = split multiple dishes amongst your table so you can have the opportunity to try multiple delishes dishes at once. That's the move. Shaken Beef Garlic Noodles - 9.2 / 10 **GET THIS DISH!!!!!** I did my "due diligence" before coming here & I 100% knew that I wanted to try this particular dish as soon as I came into the restaurant. In fact, the person whom I came here with wanted this too. (She didn't tell me in-advance). Needless to say, when multiple people have the exact same dish in-mind, you know that this is a good sign. Strips of lean, tender, juicy, quality, tenderloin steak, well-sautéed onions, plenty of garlic, served on top of a bed of al dente noodles. What's not to love? It's like eating a big, bowl, or spaghetti, but without the overpowering tomato sauce. Don't let the simplicity fool you. Yeah, I could very, well likely make this dish as home, but sometime it' just nice to leave some things to the pros. You can't go wrong with this dish. It sounds delicious in theory & it delivers on all fronts in reality. Spicy Garlic Chicken Rice - 8.9 / 10 A nice counterpoint to the heavier beef dishes that are offered, the well-seasoned, not-overly dry, but not-too spicy chicken is substantial. Round that off with an adequate portion of perfectly-steamed white rice & some fresh veggies (your standard pickled carrots, daikon radish, & lettuce), & you got yourself a solid chicken dish. Grilled Ribeye Steak Sandwich - 9.1 / 10 I hadn't had breakfast, so I was definitely craving a bit more to satisfy my hunger. This beef variant of a traditional Vietnamese Bahn-Mi hit the spot. Since I'm used to eating more economical + fattier cuts of beef for my bahn-mi, it's a rather welcome + modern twist to be using more premium cuts of steak (I honestly might steal this move the next time I whip-up a bahn-mi at home). It was hearty & you can definitely tell that the quality is there. I could be mistaken, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was some fish sauce that was used to marinade the steak. It makes for such a well-rounded, savory flavor. The crisp veggies, & aromatic cilantro round-out all taste sensations on a fresh baguette. In many ways, this is the fancier, upgraded, "Rolls Royce", of a typical whole-in-the wall Vietnamese spot's bahn-mi, & that is sometimes what you want. I would definitely get this again, especially if I was on-the-go. DRINKS Mango Jasmine Iced Tea - 8.9 / 10 Don't sleep on Mama Hong's handcrafted beverages. The mango jasmine iced tea provides everything that I want in a thirst-quenching drink. You get the tropical tones of the mango offset by the herbaceous jasmine of the tea. I really appreciate that it's not overly sweet. I especially dig that their handcrafted beverages come in customized branded plastic packaging with that soda-can lever-opener-style lid. You just don't get that anywhere. The staff is beyond accommodating. Shout-out to Mariska for being such a friendly & warm server. Granted, I came on a Sunday afternoon (around 2pm-3:30pm), don't be surprised if you have to wait because I can see this place being quite the trendy spot. Granted it's casual, it's still feels a bit nicer/fancier than the more relaxed bars, fast-casual spots in the surrounding area. You can't go wrong with Mama Hong's Vietnamese Kitchen - Burbank. A solid choice, indeed.
