This is one of many drink places open at Santa Anita mall. I tried it for the first time yesterday and really liked the matcha drinks here! The matcha flavor is very strong, and the caffeine content seems pretty high. My friends and I tried the matcha shake and the matcha latte with sakura foam (50% sweetness). I loved the Matcha Shake, which was basically a drinkable matcha soft serve. The matcha latte with sakura foam was also good, although it was very bitter (which is probably because we ordered 50% sweetness). My friend also ordered a strawberry mochi for herself (which I personally did not try); she said it was very good and the mochi was soft. I've been there twice and while I love a good matcha latte I have ordered their matcha soft serve the past two visits. There is easy ordering on the iPad. The big menus are up above. The first time I ordered the matcha soft serve and the second time I ordered the matcha and milk swirl. I think I prefer the latter. The next time I might try the Mont Blanc softserve. I agree with Margaret P., the L.A. East Community Manager, who wrote that it didn't knock her socks off. But it definitely hits the spot without having to drive somewhere else after shopping. Matcha Ren was announced in May and then opened in September in the old hainan chicken spot (near the Nordstrom as you walk towards the outdoors area, past Uncle Tetsu!) It's kiosk order only and service was relatively quick despite the building line. I ordered the: *Matcha Montblanc Parfait (layered with the montblanc, Hokkaido milk cream (you could also pick Matcha ice cream), strawberry puree, mochi , crunchy cereal and kadang (jelly)) - I enjoyed this! The strawberry puree was pretty sweet for me but I loved finding the mochi and kadang. Decided to skip the matcha drinks and ice cream since I was disappointed when I first went there a few months ago so I gave this spot a second chance and got their popular mochi instead! At first, I was hesitant to spend $4.80 on 1 mochi but I ended up being curious and getting 2! This was definitely the priciest mochi I've gotten but after seeing so much hype on social media on how their mochi is freshly made, I had to get it. The Matcha Strawberry mochi tasted very fresh, soft, and chewy. It didn't taste too sweet or doughy but wish there was more of a matcha flavor. The strawberry would have been better if it was more sweet. I really enjoyed that there was a string given to cut the mochi perfectly in half! The strawberry choco mochi was very sweet and the strawberry tasted hard and not sweet. Definitely don't recommend getting this and would much rather get the matcha strawberry! Passed by this matcha spot over the weekend at Santa Anita Mall and noticed there was a line, so of course I had to see what the hype was about! The setup is open and you can clearly see their workstation while ordering. I noticed that the bowls and whisks didn't seem to be rinsed or changed between drinks, and spills on the counter weren't being wiped down right away. It made the area look a little less clean. I ordered two drinks. First was the banana cream matcha -- it was delicious and really smooth, but I honestly couldn't taste much matcha. It leaned more toward a banana milk flavor. The second was the blueberry matcha.They used blueberry purée (it tasted fresh!), but similar to the first drink, the matcha flavor was very light and got overshadowed. Overall, the drinks were enjoyable flavor-wise, especially if you prefer fruit-forward matcha drinks. Matcha Ren is located next to Red Rock in the corridor between Din Tai Fung and the promenade and serves a variety of matcha treats--crepes, daifuku, Mont Blanc soft serves, and matcha drinks. I've passed by it a few times where the line almost made it to the boba shop next door. It doesn't move super fast but isn't too long of a wait either. We ordered daifuku, although they were unfortunately out of the shiroan by that time (7pm?) and I don't like the anko daifuku as much. It's nice that the offer the shiroan one in general though. It's pretty tasty for the US, with the only downside being the outside was a little crusty from sitting in the fridge. Both Mont Blancs were yummy, but I liked the parfait ($10) way more because of the mochi balls and tart strawberries which helped balance the milky soft serve. Was craving a drink while shopping at Santa Anita Mall and decided to give this place a try. I always cross paths with this matcha shop and notice that there's always a long line but my family and I got there and no line surprisingly on a Saturday afternoon. Before I ordered, I saw that their bowl and whisk aren't being washed in between making each drink. You can see through the transparent glass how messy the bar is since the leftover matcha just drips down from the whisk and bowl. Whatever, we still decided to order and take our chances. I got the banana cream matcha and you can taste the freshness of the banana cream top. The matcha wasn't as concentrated as I hoped it would be but it was decent. Came here a couple of times and this place in terms of wait has been a hit or miss meaning one day there'll be a long line or other days it'll just be a short wait. The matcha drinks here are pretty comparable to other places which is a good thing but doesn't mean it really stands out compared to the rest. Nevertheless, the Matcha Strawberry drink I got wasn't too bad. We also ordered their Mont Blanc to try. It's probably the must-try here at Matcha Ren. For the popularity of this place, this store location seemed understaffed and not well placed. I waited in line for 20 minutes as the line stretched behind into the hallway leading outside. Upon receiving the mont blanc soft serve, the ice cream looked aesthetically pleasing. However, I was not a fan of the texture of the mont blanc as it's very similar to play-doh. The ice cream was also lackluster as the matcha did not come through and ended up tasting more like condensed milk. I AM IN LOVE! So surprised to see NO line on New Year's Day?! I have been wanting to try this place for so long but the line was just always so long. Good matcha option in the 626. Located inside the mall right along the hallway near Din Tai Fung. Average price is about $7 per cup. Ordered 2 blueberry matches and 1 strawberry, did not taste artificial and was pleasant. They make each matcha drink per order and you'll see them craft each cup as order comes in. Of the three flavors we tried, strawberry with matcha, strawberry and chocolate and the sakura, I would recommend the sakura one because it was nice a floral and the gummy candy on top was nice. This is my second time at Matcha Ren. My first time I got a matcha soft serve. My friend thought it was too bitter but it was perfect for me! I like my matcha stronger and it was rich and creamy. This time I tried a hojicha soft serve with the matcha strawberry daifuku. The milk soft serve tastes like the white rabbit milk candy rather than a pure milk taste. The hojicha was not blended in but rather a drip on the top. The tea flavor was good! You can't go wrong with a daifuku, although the mochi was slightly on the thin side for me. I'm not sure if the matcha is usually bitter but it tastes way bitter than the regular matcha I would make at home. I'm not too sure if I just got a bad mix of matcha or it's their usual taste. Their service was pretty fast as I had to wait for a quick 5 minutes for my drink. Ambiance is average since this is more of a grab and go cafe! I've been to this spot more than I can count with my fingers. It's a good matcha spot next to Nordstrom / Din Tak Fung but has drinks, ice creams, crepes, and Daifuku. Don't expect you'll get your drinks right away as they are whisking up your matcha. Each cup is measured and whisked. Hence service can be a bit slow but can't blame anyone. Trust the process. I've been here twice so far and was lucky to visit on weekdays with no line. The matcha Americano, however, was disappointing, it was watery and lacked flavor, so I wouldn't get it again. This review is based purely on their mochis/daifukus. I ordered the matcha strawberry and the strawberry cream daifuku. Both of them were absolutely delicious. I could easily eat 10 of them. The matcha strawberry had a fresh strawberry inside of it, and the paste wasn't too sweet. The flavors blended well together and the mochi skin was soft but had a slight chewiness to it which was perfect! The strawberry cream was light and not too sweet either. I'm not really a matcha person, but I am a daifuku person so I was very interested in trying Matcha Ren's matcha mochi strawberry mochi, which is a whole strawberry, encased in white bean paste, and then a layer of matcha mochi. The matcha is more for color than taste but it was a lovely confection, the tartness and brightness of the strawberry, the sweetness of the bean paste, and the chewy mochi. While I was there, I also ordered a banana cream latte, which the cashier helpfully recommended. It is one of the Top 2 sellers for reason. The banana cream is homemade with fresh bananas, condensed milk, and cream. It is delicious and not artificial at all. We also really liked their Mochi as well, as they are hard to find outside of Japan and Hawaii. Their green tea flavored mochi with white bean and strawberry interior was very good. Stopped by one weekend and was happily surprised to be there before they opened. definitely arrive early or you might be waiting for a while, I arrived 15 minutes early and there was already a line forming. We tried the mont blanc, strawberry matcha and the banana matcha. I'd never had anything like the mont black before so it was a pretty interesting experience, the matcha just melts in your mouth. The flavor was unexpected, a little cheesy? Reminded me of cheese foam that you get in boba drinks, which I'm not the hugest fan of, so I would not get it again, but I am glad I tried it. BIG YIKES. I've heard of this franchise and seen it in other locations in SoCal, I've just never had the chance to try. Those ones have slightly higher ratings so the fact that this has scored so lowly is a huge red flag. But we already ordered before I checked in to see and part of me gave them the benefit of the doubt and thought the low reviews were from a grand opening event or something, but sadly not the case. There was no line when we went on a Wednesday evening after an early dinner, only 1 person ahead of us who ordered. The worker was polite and friendly and all of our order came out efficiently. Not only do they have matcha here in the form of a drink, but other beverages and desserts (strawberry daifuku, crepes, soft serve, etc.). We got the: 1) Matcha Latte: -You have choices of other milk alternatives, but we just got it with whole milk. -At first tastes like any basic matcha latte or matcha milk tea that you can get at any low quality boba place but strangely after an hour or so, it started to taste fishy which was super gross. I know this happens sometimes with matcha drinks that I leave overnight, but the fact that this happened so quickly makes me wonder what could have made it denature/oxidize like that... 2) Yuzu Lemon Matcha Soda: -No taste of Yuzu at ALL (even though I saw the server spoon some in before capping the drink). Even with mixing the drink. There is a slice of lemon in it too. -Just tastes like super bitter dirt matcha with soda water. Like a gross health tonic that we had to chase with the ice cream. 3) Matcha Mont Blanc Soft Serve: -You can choose the flavor of the soft serve and we go the swirl of matcha and Hokkaido milk. -All of the Yelp reviews and the photos that I've seen of Matcha Ren at this point have been of this Mont Blanc dessert and since it's amore unique item, we just had to get it. They also squish out the "matcha noodles" on top in front of you which is neat. -The "noodles" are soft dough-y matcha puree squished on top of the ice cream. The ice cream was decently milky and didn't have that watery texture and the matcha "noodles" added a nice kick of sweetness to the dessert. -We actually had to use this as a chaser for how foul the soda was...This was the only good thing from our order and if you had to get something, it'd be this. Maybe, maybe? I'll try a different dessert in the future if someone else I'm with wants to try it out, but other than that this is a big skip for me at this mall. I've been here a few times and the staff are always friendly. I've never tried their drinks and only come for the strawberry daifuku. Such a yummy treat! Fresh strawberry with sweetened bean paste and covered with chewy Mochi. We have tried the chocolate strawberry mochi and it is a bit too sweet for my preference so we always stick to the traditional daifuku. Today we tried the cream brulee crepe and it was ok. It had the crunchy sugar on top, but the edges of the crepe were burnt and left a weird after taste when we ate it. The drinks looked good and maybe next time, I will give it a try.Oddly, I am not a matcha latte drinker but do love other products made with matcha. (4.5/5) If you love matcha, this place definitely hits the spot. Tons of mixed reviews here on yelp, but during my visit, everything tasted fresh and was made well. Located at the Promenade near Nordstrom on the second floor of the Santa Anita Mall. The line was very long when I got there, but it didn't take too long to place my order. Service was good, and I can hear them call out the order number even it was ready. I got the Sakura Foam Matcha Latte and Mont Blanc Softserve. The Sakura Foam Matcha Latte was very good, especially with the floral taste added. The Mont Blanc Softserve was fun to try for one time since it's so pricey and interesting to see with the spaghetti form. read more
