I suppose if there was a lower star than one, or a half star, I'd rate this place or no star. My experience was as horrid as they come. I think what made it's worse was the no acceptance of responsibility or accountability on the guy's part. I think he's the owner. I dropped off some pants for alteration. When I came to pick up, two were fine, one was not. I dropped that for readjustment and added another new pant for alteration. Let's just say it was a disaster when I came to get the two pants. This man tried to add payments on the fly, said I said things I didn't say and charged different from what was on the receipt he gave me, citing that tax was not being added. Yes, somehow, that was not in the total amount he had prior told me I'd be paying?? I made my feelings clear, told him it was all about the principle and it's a very wrong way to conduct business especially to customers who are new like I was. This is single-handedly the worst, worst, worst place to possibly consider getting your clothing tailored. The owner literally tried to steal my clothing! Check this out: I left several pants, a dress, and a few other things here a few weeks ago. The tailor measured me and we discussed the work. He told me it would take a few weeks and that I'd have to pay in cash. I smiled at the cash-only thing but it's common at mom-and-pop shops. I arrived today with the cash to pick up and pay for my alternations. This is the exact interaction, verbatim: "Well I didn't do your stuff because I didn't think you were gonna pay." "What?" "Many people leave their things and since you smiled when I said cash-only I decided you weren't gonna pick up your things so I didn't do the work." "But why did you accept my clothing if you didn't think I was gonna pay and weren't planning to do the work?" "Well because many people leave their things." "That's not what I asked. I asked why did you accept my clothes if you weren't going to do the work?" "Because you smiled so I didn't think you were gonna pay." This went on for some time. Me asking why he took my stuff, and him rationalizing using unrelated reasons. The owner is unwilling to apologize or take responsibility or be accountable. Rather than apologize, he just kept blaming me and talking about other clients. No acceptance of responsibility for attempting to steal my stuff or making a completely unwarranted assumption. This went on for some time. He then grabbed my stuff and dragged it on the floor, stepping on my dress. I said please don't step on my dress and he denied that he was doing it, even though I was watching. I kept saying, "I just saw you step on my dress." And he kept denying it. This is called gaslighting, a technique abusers use to make people around them question their reality. It doesn't work on me but I recognize the manipulative tactic. He then began to record me, which I'd love to see, because I've been calm and collected, trying to understand the rationale behind him accepting my belongings and not doing work. I decided to sit down in the shop to write a review immediately, while this interaction was still fresh. He told me to leave, despite it still being business hours, claiming that he has to take lunch. I decided to remain here to finish my review, while he continuously harassed me and kept saying things while I asked him to please leave me alone to finish writing this post. He wasn't kind, apologetic, or accountable despite it being clear that he made an unwarranted assumption or tried to steal my stuff or both. The situation is absurd but please, do not take your stuff here. I have no idea if he's a competent tailor, but I know he is at least an attempted thief and can't be trusted. read more

Did a good job hemming sleeves of blazers at the wrist. The work was done quickly and on time. I hoped they would also help a blazer with complicated buttons but they said they wouldn't because it wouldn't look good. Had three super random requests I needed help with, I received a blazer from StitchFix with defects, had a dress I loved but the slip kept riding up underneath it and I popped a button/ripped a dress. He found a way to make all three even better than brand new and the price was very reasonable. I believe I was dealing with the owner, a super friendly gentleman who went out of his way to help me with all my requests in a very fast timeline. This is a hidden gem in South Austin. I can get my $200 Paige jeans hemmed with an original hem (it looks exactly the same as before I got it hemmed) but without that $25+ Nordstrom price tag. It's $12.95, and the turnaround can be as fast as one day if you request it, IF the proprietor is not busy. Same for lined J. Crew wool work pants. Ask for pricing. Some things aren't practical to get tailored. Be sure to bring your clothes for the least fuss and best estimates. Douglas is his name. This man takes care of meticulously adjusting your length in the mirror after you try it on in a very spartan dressing "corner," behind the register. He'll do a great job for you. You can tell by the neat way he dresses and grooms himself. When going, be sure to watch for Hill's Cafe - Master Tailor's right across the street from Hill's in a smallish strip mall facing west, so it's a little tricky to see it sometimes. I'd bought a skirt (part of a very expensive suit) and realized that the way the skirt was cut was very matronly looking. I wanted to get it tapered in on the sides to give it more of a pencil skirt shape. So I looked around at reviews on Yelp and found Master Tailors. He had the best reviews so I stopped by. It's not a fancy place but the work was incredible and it was done within a week for a fair price ($28 or $30). I was a bit worried because the skirt was lined and I didn't know how that would come out. You can't even tell. I just got back from Master Tailors where I picked up several pairs of shorts whose waistline I had taken in. His alterations are undetectable and the fit was amazing. I also had capris/bermuda bottoms altered to become shorts, and I am so pleased with how they came out. He has no problem making any further adjustments to his work. Don't underestimate this unassuming place with its no frills set up. Quality work is quality work so you should care less how "fancy" the place is. I diligently research every service I employ so stop looking for a tailor, save time, and use Master Tailors. read more

I am standing up in my best friends wedding in a week and I needed to get the dress hemmed that was custom fitted from a dress shop in Boston. I have recently moved to the Austin area and researched many reviews for alterations on Yelp and decided on Master Tailors. What a GREAT (yet ballsy) decision - especially when it comes to a bridesmaid dress! The guys name is Douglas (just one guy I think) and he does amazing work. The dress was hemmed EXACTLY where I needed it and you can't even tell I got it hemmed. The work is flawless and quick. The cost is a little pricier than some, but not outrageous and I personally think it's 150% worth it for the quality of work. CASH OR CHECK ONLY! The location is kind of hard to find and it's small. I believe I gave Master Tailors the most stars last time I reviewed them...perhaps on another site???? I am changing my review now.....I am livid!! I went to Master Tailors after reading their reviews. Everyone seems to LOVE the work he does. The only complaint I saw was quite a few people's garments were not ready at the proposed pick up date. I decided to go ahead and chance it. I took my jeans to be hemmed and when I went to pick them up on the date he said they'd be ready, they were not ready ...hadn't even been touched. I overlooked it because I was in no hurry. Once I finally received my finished jeans, they were PERFECT! I was very impressed with his work! They did not look hemmed or altered in any way. YAAY Now I have a fabulous tailor! (I'm short, so I get a lot of things hemmed.) Well....after three visits, I have learned not to trust him when he says they will be ready on a certain date.....I have yet to see that happen. Each time I went to pick them up, they had not been touched...still hangingin the same spot I left them a week before. My last visit was my last visit. I took 5 pair of pants in to be hemmed. My boyfriend took me shopping and bought me very expensive clothes that I would never be able to afford on my own. I took them to Master Tailor to be hemmed. Even though he is awful at pick up times, I was VERYconfident in his work and was not afraid to take him my expensive pants. He said they'd be ready on Dec 29th (1 week).....I went to pick them up Jan 4th....they had not been touched. He advised he could complete them that day and I could come back..... I'm guessing he threw them together really fast...the work was horrible two pair of pants are too short and they all look totally hemmed. Looks like the work of a low budget laundry mat tailor. I am so sad! I have ruined these gorgeous EXPENSIVE pants.I cannot replace. I will not be returning to Master Tailor. I went in needing my dress hemmed. He got it done on time and did a nice job, although I would have appreciated a phone call when it was done. The only reason I'm docking a star is because I feel I got overcharged. $92 for a simple hemming is steep based on what I'm accustomed to (and from what I'm seeing others are posting), especially considering the dress didn't even cost that much. This was an emergency, so I just went with whoever was available, but next time I'd use someone a little more reasonably priced. read more

When I first moved here from California I called around to have a few pair of pants hemmed but the prices were about triple what I would have paid back home. I know, I know most things are cheaper here but I just didn't feel like an alternation should cost the same as the ugly work pant itself so I just used hem tape. A few weeks ago I found a cute dress in a resale shop that had huge arm holes but for $7 I couldn't pass it up. I also had another dress at home that I knew I'd wear more if it were altered from long sleeve to tank. Lastly, I had a jacket with a ripped seam and since it was lined, it wasn't something I could easily hand sew. So my quest for a new tailor began and lucky for me I found Master Tailors super close to wear I live. He was friendly, efficient, well priced and I'm happy with the result. I will definitely return! I had an incredible experience at Master Tailor. Appearances are deceiving here. I brought in a bridesmaid dress that had a lot of gathers of fabric on the bodice. The bottom gather stuck out almost like a "shelf" on the dress. I brought it in to Douglas & he did a thorough fitting. When I came to pick it up it didn't look quite right bc the fabric was so heavy. He said he would fix it, & for me to come back later. When I came back he had fixed it perfectly & insisted I not pay him. He is a perfectionist who delivers high quality work& exceptional customer service. If looks can be deceiving then the Master Tailor must be a master magician. I originally found Master Tailors on Yelp and have been extremely pleased with his work every time. It's a small place in the same parking lot as a gas station but I can appreciate its charm. Plus I always try to support small local businesses being a busines owner myself. Over the last few months my husband and I have taken in multiple pairs of jeans, slacks, and most recently a designer bridesmaid dress that was a little long and tight through the belly... he did a PHENOMENAL job on the dress which also had a manufacturing defect on the zipper. The clothes have always been ready on time and I've felt very comfortable with the tailor (as a woman this can sometimes be tricky). Poorly run business. Have strict policies on picking up clothes. Took longer than any other tailor I've used in my lifetime. Also did not tailor my dress appropriately where I requested that would not show my bra and boobs in the front. Will need another tailor to fix dress. All around, will not go back. read more

They do not take credit cards and are very defensive about it. Also, you will need to specify if you want a finished edge, or it will be left raw. The charge was 12$ to shorten straps on a bathing suit (which I would've done myself but my machine is broken and I'm intimidated by the stretchy fabric.) When I went to pick up my bathing suit I overheard him tell another customer that they only take cash and checks. I was surprised since l was not told this when I dropped off my bathing suit. I was pretty annoyed because I'm going out of town and was expecting to bring my suit with me. There was no signage anywhere stating that they do not take credit cards and the other customer seemed quite surprised as well. We both told him that he needs a sign. So I went home and came back the next day with my checkbook. When I commented on the rough edge of the work, he got angry told me to leave his shop, not pay him and not to come back. Not very professional in attitude or work, which is a bummer because they are near my house. read more

I've been going to the "Master" for years. It all started about 10 years ago, when he altered my bridesmaid dress, beautifully. Now, my husband and I continue to go back and get our pants hemmed, since we're both short. He even fixed my husband's nice peacoat, which a different alteration business had made such a sloppy job. We had moved and were much closer to the other, but decided Master was well worth the drive! Only once did I have to get my tricky pair of pants adjusted a second time from Master, and he did it without an extra charge. He's super nice and skilled, and his business is a well run operation. I had a pair of jeans taken in at the waist, and I must say that the craftmanship was excellent. I've seen much stronger customer service, but apparently, the master tailor had to spend some unexpected time in the hospital, so I'll cut him some slack. I went a few times to pick up my stuff and the place was just locked up. It would have been nice for his helper to put up a sign letting us know what was going on or something. Oh well. Because the workmanship was so good, I'll give him another shot the next time I need something tailored. read more
