I rarely need tailoring assistance, as I like to sew - but for a suit it's imperative! Ms. Kim did an exceptional job on custom altering my new plaid wool-blend suit (which I intentionally purchased too-large and budget-friendly from Chadwick's in order to make it alterable): *** transformed the skirt into high-waisted style for my super long torso so it now looks fabulous with a blouse tucked in! *** shortened the jacket's overall length to make a riding jacket style *** shortened the sleeves length and width, for a nice custom fit LOVE IT! With proper care and storage, this suit will last for decades. If you are going to get a custom tailored suit with many custom changes like mine, plan on spending at least $120 - and if it's a rush job, expect to pay a premium. (On the other hand, custom suits from clothiers like Tom James on Far West that do all your measurements, provide high-end fabric, and artisanally design/cut/sew the suit cost at least $800, so I've been told, and that is far beyond my budget, though it is a worthy investment for some professions). read more

Coming from NYC/CT I have always been into fashion. I have had custom suits made and clothes tailored all throughout my life. Similar to sitting down with a new barber for the first time, there are trust issues present. The same emotions come with getting valuable pieces altered with a new tailor. Let's just say I put full trust into Sun's Alterations after my first visit. Whereas now, I must've paid at least 10+ visits since then. Ms. Kim is so good at what she does! Her prices are reasonable and affordable. I got a jumpsuit, that was 2-3 sizes too big, tailored down to my size. The jumpsuit was for a work uniform, but they ran out of small sizes so I was pretty worried about what to do. She gave me a turnaround of one week, which was much sooner than I was expecting. It fits great now! I can't believe how incredible her craftsmanship is. The lines are neat and she even added some runching detail to make it fit even better. I also got a pair of old jeans tailored because I didn't want them to continue sitting in my closet. These used to be my favorite jeans, but i lost some weight and couldn't wear them anymore. Now, they're my favorites once again thanks to Ms. Kim! I'll definitely be coming back. She is kind and very very skilled at what she does. read more

I'm overall pleased with my experience. The girl who works the front/phones and assists with alterations is very sweet. Everyone I met definitely took the time out to make me feel heard. The stopped what they were doing, came over to me to discuss what I wanted in length, and made sure that I didn't feel rushed. That's a pretty big deal to me. Though the shop is small, there was plenty of room for me to change and have the ladies go over my alterations. There was a small delay in my order time, but they had my dress ready for me by closing that day and the job did not looked "rushed", which was my concern. The most expensive part of my alterations was the hemming, and that definitely looked like quality work. To get a two layered dress hemmed and a strap added to the back was 65$. I needed a dress tailored to attend a wedding ASAP, and I came here on a whim. When I walked in, I told the woman working the counter what I wanted done to my dress, and she had me put it on and mark where I wanted it hemmed/etc. She told me for the hem at the bottom and to change the lengths of 2 slits it would be $86. I thought this to be pretty steep, but needed it done in a week so I went with it. I ask her if the coupon on this yelp page would be honored and she said she didn't know what yelp was. After I went to pick up my dress (this time, noticing the yelp sticker literally on the front door), i put on my dress and it was hemmed much higher than we had discussed, making it unwearable. I sunk $180 on a dress between alterations and the dress, for it to be unwearable. I understand at a certain point communication/language barrier can be an issue, on top of the week turnaround time, but the markings on the dress should have made this extremely straightforward and she could have turned me away instead of doing a poor job. Gave an extra star for accommodating the turnaround time, but my dress is unwearable, and pretending not to even know what yelp is when there is a sticker for it on your front door was extremely odd putting. Will not be returning and do not recommend. read more

I have been a customer of Sun's for awhile. I brought by a dress and the owner fixed the zipper for me, as it was not well made. Unfortunately, I had to bring the dress back a few weeks later. I explained to the owner that it broke again. She made a comment saying that the dress was too small on me, that I didn't fit in the dress, and that's why the zipper broke. There was another customer in the shop as this was happened. I will not be going back here. read more

I bring almost all of my everyday clothes here to be tailored. The prices are more than reasonable, and the woman is very friendly. Expect about a week turnaround for items you're having tailored. I struggle with finding jeans that fit me well around the waist. Jeans often fit well around my legs and backside but are too large on the waist. She was able to take some of the fabric out and re-sew a new center hem so that the jeans fit appropriately, and they look amazing! read more

I had a pair of dress pants altered somewhere else & they did not turn out the way that I had wanted them to, and Sun Alterations completely altered them into exactly what I was looking for- and for a very fair price. I was ready to give Sun's a great review, but was immediately disappointed when I came to pick my item up. I was in a rush to get a pair of pants hemmed and brought them in on Tuesday and she said they would be ready by Saturday. I called on Friday to see if they happened to be ready early and she said "I think so"...ok? I stopped by and they were ready but she then informed that she would be charging me $10 more bc the pants were lined. Seems like that's something she should have called about! I ended up paying $21.65 to get the pants hemmed. The quality of the work is good and I'm happy they could get the job done in a short time, but there is absolutely no customer service and the prices seem a little steep read more

Tip: Sun's Alterations is NOT cheap at all. I asked her prior a rough estimate of how much it would cost to hem my dress and shorten the straps, but she insisted I put the dress on before she could give me a quote. I couldn't really say no to the cost after she put pins everywhere so I reluctantly said yes. $46 for an easy job. I was expecting maybe around $20 or $30 for such an simple dress without any lining, but she slapped me in the face with the $46 lol. She did a great job though! read more

I came to Sun's Alterations to get a fully-lined sheath dress with an embroidered knit lining overlay taken in. I decided upon this location because of many reviews on Yelp mentioned how quickly she was able to get the job done. I brought the dress in on Thursday afternoon and requested for it to be completed by Saturday. This was the first tailor I'd ever visited in Austin (I am originally from Dallas), so I was not sure what to expect in terms of pricing. The job ended up being $58, which she requested upfront before I picked up the dress. In my experience, this is pretty normal for a dress that had as many layers as the one that I brought in. However, I was a little disappointed because the tailors that I visited in the past to take in form-fitting clothing usually give me recommendations on what is best and explain exactly how the dress is going to be altered, along with any other details that might affect the complexity of the job. This makes it a lot easier for me to justify the price instead of blindly accepting a quote. I called in around noon on Saturday to check up on the status of the dress, and she told me to come in an hour to pick it up. It fit perfectly! Bottom line: If you want reasonably-priced, straightforward work that is finished quickly and well, Sun's Alterations definitely meets these criteria. However, while I am a fan of the speed and quality of the work, the overall experience was not up to par, especially for a similar price that I normally pay for equally good work and much better service. read more

My experience with Sun Alterations has been good, but not great. I first went to get a bridesmaid dress fitted. It took a lot to get the top to fit correctly, and they did a good job on that. However, they also hemmed the dress about 1/4" too short. I went back a second time to have the top of a shirt dress taken in (buttons all down the front). They ended up tailoring it too tight, and having to add additional snaps onto the front so the buttons wouldn't pucker. Their prices are okay and the location and people are nice, but my alterations have just been kind of off. read more

TL;DR: I'd recommend you go elsewhere for your needs unless you have plenty of time on your hands. The quality of her work is good (neat stitches and whatnot), but the customer service is nigh nonexistent (negative points for her). It was a Monday. I wanted a floor-length bridesmaid dress magically turned into a knee-length one within a week (and the sides of the top part a bit tapered). I consulted Yelp for help, and it gave me two promising looking shops. One didn't pick up or reply to my phone call. Sun's Alterations picked up immediately. I asked the lovely voice at the other end if it would be possible to get what I wanted within the specified time frame. She responded in the affirmative. I was elated. Until I got there. When I entered the store, all I saw was this lady chatting on her phone. She didn't even bother greeting me. Just a quick glance at me and a vague wave to the dressing room when I hesitantly remained standing at the door waiting for her to get off the phone or something. Not to be deterred by the lack of welcome, I changed into the dress and watched the lady meander my way with some safety pins. I told her what I wanted and she did her business--still on the phone, mind you--and it was a quick 3 minutes with all of 10 words said to me. Very "Wham, bam, thank you ma'am" . We set the pick up day to be the following Monday. Pick up day was not Monday. I had gone to pick up my dress, only to find out that the lady hadn't even started the alterations. I had driven 45 minutes (with another 45min of driving back to look forward to) to see the lady casually chatting with some other lady and absolutely nothing changed on my dress. What. No. I could ignore the potholes in the parking lot. I could forgive the lack of customer service and having this lady talk on her phone about personal matters while ignoring me. What I could not tolerate was her inability to do the job for which I was paying $81 (full price even with the delay). I ended up returning the next day to see the hopefully finished product. I have to admit: I still wasn't happy with her work. She had taken in the bust more than necessary, so the dress was tight on top and would barely zip up. She did add a hook to the dress to help it zip, but it seemed to be more of an excuse to not redo the sides. She definitely didn't want to do more work on the dress, and I didn't want to deal with her anymore especially for fear she would take additional days to fix her work, so I just took home the dress as is. I just hope the dress doesn't rip when I bend or sit or move in any way. At least the hem looks beautiful. Work: 4/5 Everything else: -1/5 read more

I'm so glad I found this shop on Yelp. Not only is it close to where I live, parking is ample. If you are driving up Lamar, you'd definitely pass this place since Sun's is way in the back of the complex, in the corner and somewhat covered up by a tree. Its located in the complex right before where Goodwill & the Book store. If you reached that point, you've gone too far. There is a little changing room for you to try things on. I brought jeans in and she measured them with the shoes I was planning on wearing them with. For 3 pairs of jeans, with the original hem, it was $60. I thought it was a little on the pricey side but since the reviews were so good, I figured she was worth it. When I got my jeans back, they were hemmed perfectly. I am very pleased and happy to have found a tailor I can go to! Sun's has limited hours on Saturday, so make sure you get there by 3pm to pick up/drop off your stuff! read more

I would definitely say I'm disappointed in this seamstress/business owner. I brought in a dress that needed to be taken in. The dress was maybe worth $15-20. After explaining what I wanted, trying it on, getting it pinned, and taking it off, the owner then tells me "That's $75." WHAT?! The dress isn't even worth half that much! In an effort to make both my time and hers worthwhile, as I didn't desire to go shopping around for a decent price to cut a few inches off a cheap dress, I asked if it would be any cheaper if there's no rush on it- TAKE YOUR TIME. The price dropped $10. But it gets worse. When I pick up the dress, I couldn't try it on since someone was already in the dressing room (there's only one). So I just throw it over my clothes- satisfied enough- I take it off and leave. I then put it on later for the wedding I was headed to, and come to find out all is perfect except my waist (the tiniest part of my torso) isn't cinched in. There's at least an extra inch of material on each side, giving me a boxy look. For $65, I expected better. Needless to say, is not recommend this place, especially if you want something done right and/or are on a budget. read more

The alteration was fine and the work what I expected. But she quoted me one thing and when I came in charged me an extra $20 because the dress had a lining she didn't see before. Two issues here - why didn't she call me to ask/inform me in advance of the extra charge and why would an experienced seamstress not check the structure of the dress initially to know there was a lining and exactly what the alteration would entail. Seems like I wasn't the only one this happened to - see Laura M's report of the very same scenario. And like another post I didn't like the fact that there was only one dressing room. Worse still is that it clearly hadn't been cleaned in awhile. Her shop doesn't need to be fancy but clean is another thing entirely. I brought Kim a genuine leopard vintage cape with shredded lining on the inside, Kim fixed it. I also brought Kim a 1920s Art Deco dress that i couldn't fit over my chest, Kim put a zipper on it and it fits perfectly and it's beautiful. And now I can actually put it on and wear it. I brought Kim three 1920s-30s dresses, so old and delicate that I had given up on wearing them, the seams on the shoulders, sleeves, at the bottom were all either fraying or straight up disappearing, but Kim fixed them too and they too are beautiful Thank you Kim. And not to mention the extremely affordable rates and the timely manner in which she worked. read more
