Love me some Nelda's tailors! I have been going to Nelda's tailors for 25+ years. The entire team does excellent work. They alter the most complicated garment to the simplest job. You can always count on your garment being treated with kid cloves and your finished alternations exceeding your expectations. I dropped off several items with Gladys that were snagged by jack Brown cleaners staff in their cleaning process. Nelda's team were able to salvage these pieces. The pieces now look like they did before I dropped them off to Jack Brown Cleaners before they destroyed more than 25+ articles of clothing with snags and punctured holes. Horrible experience. Decided to give Nelda's a try after reading all of the positive reviews. I typically use Nordstrom's for tailoring but thought I'd try to support a longtime, local business because I was in the area. I dropped off two cotton dresses to shorten with a basic hem on each and explained that I wasn't in a rush. However, I didn't expect to not hear anything back for over a month. Called to check the status and was told they'd be ready in 10 more days. Not a big deal since I didn't need them right away but I was very surprised to see how much I was charged once they were finally ready, $28.50 each!! Seems like rush pricing and easily 30% over what Nordstrom's charges. Service wasn't friendly either. It looks like they do a lot of bridal work but I definitely wouldn't recommend for basic alterations, way overpriced. read more

Normally I don't get my clothes tailored much, but when I got a pair of pants for a trip and they were way too long, I thought there was no way they would be able to hem them in time. Nope! Highly recommend for bridal tailoring. I ended up getting a bunch of things done like adding lining to my scratchy straps, needed a bustle, and an adjustment to the bustier. I needed a bridesmaids dress hemmed and was recommended by a friend to try Nelda's. I stopped in and was happy to see everyone wearing masks during COVID. They immediately helped me out and pinned the dress as needed. They told me it would be ready within 5 days (I wasn't in a hurry). I got a call about two days later that it was ready. They did a great job, it was done quickly, and the price was very reasonable. It was about $40 for a multi layer dress. I recommend! read more

Would not recommend for wedding dress alterations. I visited 4 different tailors and this was the only experience where I wasn't given great service. Not very detail oriented and only did the "bare minimum." By this I mean that once I got my dress on, she pinned the sides and the straps and discussed hemming. That's fine if you want a regular alteration done... but she did not take the time to discuss any fine tuning such as shaping of the neckline, or how fitted I want the torso/waist, if I plan to sit or stand-only in the dress, and any detailing of stitches/seams/etc that should be discussed when handling a dress that will be completely fitted to your body. For the minimal service I was given, I was blown away by how much she was quoting me in comparison to the other tailors I visited. To top it all off, when I called to make the appointment, she did not once mention to me that there was a $15 consultation fee. This was made known to me at the VERY END of my appointment as I was getting ready to walk back to my car! It was not mentioned when I walked in, when I sat down, when I met the wedding dress tailor, nor when she was giving me the quote. Since then, I've visited one other tailor who gave me EXCELLENT service, who is a master at her craft, is extremely detail oriented and truly made me feel like she has my best interest in mind. Nelda's is simply the best and there's a reason they have been around so long! I discovered a defect in the back bodice of my mother of the bride dress less than a week before my daughter's wedding, which gave my dress the appearance that it was either torn or unzipped. This was not exactly the look I was going for when being escorted down the aisle and I was launched into panic mode. I gathered up my dress and rushed to Nelda's where I was met by the sweetest man who not only allayed my fears, but assured me that he could correct the defect in plenty of time for the wedding. When I returned three days later, I was presented with an absolutely perfect dress that was repaired at an extremely reasonable price. What they pulled off was nothing short of magic as they created a lace overlay where previously there was none! I am forever indebted to Nelda's for allowing me to celebrate my daughter's wedding in the dress of my dreams! read more

I have been using Nelda's place for suit alterations for well over 20 years. I have NEVER found anyone as good!

I had my wedding dress altered here three years ago, and let me just say, the absolute hoops that Anita jumped through to make it fit just right were no short of Michael Jordan level. I think 3 fittings is customary for a dress, but I ended up having 6 or 7, for which I am so thankful. Basically, the dress just wouldn't quite lay right on me, and Anita did not stop or give up until it was exactly how it should look. Because I'm short-waisted, she ended up having to disconnect the lace overlay from the bodice and skirt underneath, lift it up, cut the dress in half, shorten the bodice, sew it back together, and then reattach the lace overlay where you couldn't even tell. This came after probably 5 fittings where we couldn't figure out why it kept wrinkling across the middle and taking it in at the hips and under the bottom just didn't fix it (she also let it back out for me when those adjustments didn't work). I probably spent 6-7 hours with her over the course of the months leading up to my wedding. She was kind and patient the whole time and determined to make it right. Wedding dresses are her specialty. If you've ever been frustrated about wait times for items it's bc 1) they prioritize brides and we get to book appointments (GREAT thing for us brides) and 2) there are walk-ins constantly, all day every day. They're very popular, and there's a shortage of skilled labor like theirs. It's not a retail shop where they can hire just anyone to come and help out. Since my wedding, I've taken several dresses there over the years for much less complicated alterations - taking in dresses and shortening bridesmaid dresses. Anita always remembers me and it's always good to see her. Give yourself much more time than you think you'll need for alterations, or learn to sew yourself, and you'll never be disappointed. read more

I've gone to Nelda's twice based on the recommendations on Yelp and both times I was disappointed. The first time I visited I brought in some pants to be hemmed. I brought them in on a Monday and was told they'd be done on Thursday afternoon. When I went to pick them up on Friday they weren't ready. The woman at the counter asked me if I had received a call saying that they were ready. Well...no, but it's the day after I was told they would be ready. Shouldn't they be hemmed by now? Later that afternoon I received the "courtesy call" to let me know my pants were ready to pick up. Recently I bought a new pair of jeans that needed to be hemmed. Not quite ready to give up on Nelda's, I returned. This time I dropped the pants off on Monday and was told they'd be ready the following Monday. A full week to hem some pants? Bummer. The following week I waited for my "courtesy call", having learned my lesson from the last time. By Wednesday afternoon I still had not heard from Nelda's- a full two days after I was told my alterations would be ready. Thursday I called to see if they were ready and maybe they just forgot to call. Nope, my pants weren't done yet! Seriously? They can't hem a pair of jeans in 10 days? Then, seven minutes later (yes, I checked) they called me to let me know they were ready. That says to me that they hadn't even started and then when I called to check on them they realized they better get that done. Total time to hem pants? Seven minutes. The work they've done is good but I think the amount of time you have to wait is ridiculous. Both times my alterations were not done when they said they would be. Honestly, I feel like their system of giving the customer a courtesy call when the item is done is an excuse to not have things done when they said they would. Maybe they do amazing work on more elaborate alterations but their customer service is lacking. I guarantee you I'm going to spend a lot more money in my lifetime on hemming pants than I will on wedding dress alterations. I just won't be spending that money at Nelda's. read more

I am embarrassed to say that over the past six months I have had two pairs of Juicy terry cloth pants chillin out in my car. At the tiny height of 4'10 (and 27 years old **blush**) every, single time I buy pants, I must have about half of them cut off it seems. This results in extra money and time on my part -- not cool dude, not cool. I took a few Yelper's recommendations and tried out Nelda's. Although the outside wasn't very appealing, the inside was warm and comfortable. The staff was super friendly and glad when I mentioned Yelp. I returned a few days later to pick up my items, but I did so before their courtesy call, which would have informed me when they were finished. However, the woman recognized me and was super nice. She asked if I could wait 10 min and she would have them done. So I did. I must note, that while waiting, I noticed the store next to Nelda's, which was named -- "A&A Liquors" -- I found this to be ironic :) For about $11 a pair, which seems to be about the going rate, my Juicy pants were hemmed and they fit perfectly. The only downside is that they are quite a distance from where I live, so slightly inconvenient. Other than that I am pleased with the service and will probably take more items there. read more

What can I say about Nelda's that is positive? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. They will forget about your clothing and lose it. Is there anything WORSE a tailor can do? I took in three shirts and two pairs of jeans for simple fixes (add a button, sew up some holes). They forgot about my order for a month, and I had to come in to complain. Then, it took them a day to find it, at which time they said they'd do it ASAP. When I went to pick up my clothing, they had lost both pairs of my jeans. Both. The lady at the counter was also incredibly rude about it. Suffice to say, if you care about your clothing, care more than bringing it to such a CARELESS tailor shop as Nelda's. read more

I feel I need to add some balance to these glowing reviews: I did NOT have a smooth, successful experience at Nelda's. Maybe I caught Nelda's in a busy month or something, but I had to return 3 times for a fairly simple dress alteration and I am not satisfied with their service and workmanship. I really wasn't looking for perfection or something super-custom, but here are the reasons I won't be going back: 1. They say that they will call when the alterations are done but do not. Three times they said they would call when the dress was done, and three times they never did. I ended up going there days beyond when they told me the work would be done... Only to find that it wasn't done or was done poorly. 2. The alterations were not done as discussed: The seamstress made some recommendations for a vent in the back of the dress, and I agreed that it was a good idea. When I returned, the dress was sewn solid with no vents. They said it was done because of some issues with some sewing tape that might be visible. Why not call and let me know before going ahead with something else? Similarly, I was told that 2 out of 3 changes would be made "by Monday." When I went in (on Wednesday since they hadn't called me), only the hem had been done. 3. Not much attention to detail/pride in work done well: I was having an fuller dress changed to a narrower silhouette. The seamstresses didn't notice that the dress had been quite asymmetrical, so the dress came out much fuller on one side than the other, with a lower/sagging hem on that side. That accounted for my 3rd trip to and from their shop. 4. After all this, they ended up charging $20 more than I was originally quoted; though *fewer* changes were made to the dress than they originally planned. I inquired about this, and she said someone must have been giving me a break, and suggested that the price quoted originally was simply wrong. Kind of the icing on the cake, right? Paying MORE for a meh experience. I felt paranoid that I was seen as some kind of high-maintenance jerk for noting these things and politely asking that they adjust them. They were agreeable but hesitant and made no effort to make these fixes quickly. As a result, though I began alterations 3 weeks before an event, I was able to pick up the dress just one day beforehand. Not impressed; wouldn't recommend them to friends. Nelda's is probably ok for basic alterations (straight hem, etc.), but I wouldn't trust them with much more. Bummer! read more

While rummaging through my closet, I came across of pair of True Religion jeans I've had for over a year! Yep, just hanging out in my closet and never worn. Why have I not strutted my stuff in these bad boys before, you ask? They were a good 6 inches too long. I wear heels not stilts. I've had Nelda's bookmarked for a few months now with "get true religions hemmed" in the box to remind myself. Go me. I swung by Nelda's before class one day and I was in and out. The ladies were really nice, asked to make sure I was getting the jeans hemmed just the way I wanted. I was nervous because those were my True Religions ...my baby. But Yelp said Nelda's would be the best and in Yelp I trust. A week later I come by to get my fancy pants and they were perfect. Hemmed just right for me and you couldn't even tell. $12 for the hemming but that's a deal for a great job on my precious jeans. I know it sounds so petty that I was so nervous about trusting anyone with my jeans but I've heard horror stories about clothes getting destroyed and I'd rather have the jeans back in my closet, tags and all, than destroyed. I definitely recommend going here; fantastic work, friendly people, and great price. read more

I had to get 4 items altered and needed them done the same day... the adjustments were 2 shirt cuffs, trouser length, and suit coat sleeve length. I called Nelda's and they said that they would do it if I got there by 10:00. I dropped everything off that morning and went back around 6:15. They were just finishing and suggested that I try everything on. I did and asked if they thought everything fit ok. Nelda's daughter noted that the sleeves were still a little to long on one of the shirts. They were already closed but without any fuss, she said "I'll redo them and have them ready in about an hour." And she did. I was really impressed... sure, they made a mistake, but they also went out of their way to get the job done in one day and were completely sweet about it. Highly recommend. read more

When I got married, I had a lot of dresses to alter. I had another friend getting married, so I had a bridesmaid dress for that, and my wedding dress, and one of my bridesmaids lived in Austin and needed her dress altered as well. Belle Saison Bridal, where I bought my wedding dress and my bridesmaids' dresses, recommended Nelda's. I did use Nelda's for all three of these dresses, and all three were fabulous. I haven't had a lot of formal dresses altered before, so I'm not sure how competitive their pricing is, but it seemed reasonable for the amount of work done. They gave me an accurate estimate of when the work would be done, got it done promptly, and made sure that I was satisfied with the dresses when they were returned. I was. They did a great job and I would definitely trust them with any clothes I need altered in the future. Note: Pay by check. They don't take credit cards. read more

Having never been to Nelda's, I went there to have my $5,300 wedding gown altered because of the great reviews on Yelp... And it turned out to be a total disappointment. I will stick to the facts to save everyone the trouble. 1. The master tailor (Anita) was never on time when I went to the scheduled fittings; there were a total of 3 fittings. 2. Anita passed me off to one of her assistants on one of the fittings and had I not asked for Anita herself, the assistant would've cut off the gown 3 inches too short. 3. The bottom of the gown was hemmed with the type of stitching that is meant to hold up temporarily; it was very loose and came apart easily. As a result, my shoes kept getting caught in it and nearly tripped several times during the wedding. I will never ever go back to this place nor will I recommend it to anyone. read more

Only reason even knew to come here, these ladies had done a good job taking in my dads leather coat. Seeing I was in two weddings this past spring. I was needing my bridesmaid dresses altered. Went in had a fitting for my dress, never saw a price sheet or was given a quote. Thinking I was about be over charged. I went to Nelda's based on the recommendations on Yelp and I was disappointed. Like Mindy said this place just work for basic alterations. I was so frustrated. I brought my fabric and my design and this guy made a mess with my dress, He charged me almost $200 I went like 3 or 4 times and he supposed to make some alterations but at the end he gave me this..... if I can say "my dress" even that the zipper it wasn't functional. The dress was sewn badly. He ruined my fabric. He sewed like a belt on my dress with the same fabric when I got home the belt fell off and my surprise was that with needle and thread he did. When i went with another tailor she was so mad too she told me that the people who made me that probably was blind or stupid she could not fix it but thank god she made me a new one and I WAS SO HAPPY with her job in 2 days she gave me the dress I wanted. I brought my wedding dress in for alterations to Nelda's. The gentleman who helped me had me try it on and said it would be synched/brought in on each side of the front waist. I was called on Tuesday before the wedding that it was ready. I picked the dress up Thursday and was in such a hurry to get out-of-town, I did not try it on, my mistake. I left town that day as the wedding was 2 hours from Austin. When I tried it on on my wedding day it HAD NOT BEEN ALTERED. Nothing at all was done to it. Yet, I was charged. I went through my wedding wearing what felt like a potato sack as it was too big. I'm too upset and disgusted to even go back in and get my money back. We had a fairly straightforward job for them: Fix some khaki pants that are a part of my husband's garanimals clothes. Yes I dress Cody in an adult male version of the old kids' clothes matching system - polo shirt, khaki pants, socks, doc martens. We have refined this system to the point where he could close his eyes, pull something from each designated space and they will match. No need to ask me if it looks ok. It does. Sometimes he gets cheeky and grabs one of the solid tee shirts for a casual day. He's not the flashiest dresser in the world but by god it's a great improvement on how he dressed when I met him in 1997. He was in a disturbing country button down shirt and tight bootcut wranglers phase but I also had an unfortunate sculpture department art school girl overalls thing going on. It's amazing we both survived. Now he exclusively wears khaki pants that are the pleated version of the Ralph Lauren Andrew Pants from the big and tall collection. We know he likes them and that they're comfortable. They're not that cheap, considering what he's willing to spend on clothes. Sometimes the seam at the outside of the hip wears a little or a button comes off. I have tried to fix these myself and subsequently ruined two perfectly good pairs of pants. So we thought we'd try paying someone to fix them. The shop is in a small strip on Pflugerville's main drag, somewhere near the high school. It looked like a normal tailor shop to me. There was a bridal fitting going on when we dropped the pants off. Now we didn't have a deadline or any particular kind of special need - we wanted the seams sewn closed and buttons put back on securely. They did this in what we thought was a reasonable period of time. We didn't even bother checking until a week had gone by. The seams were nicely done, the buttons were secure and all was well. The cost for all the repairs was about 1/10 of the cost of one pair of pants at the store so we were happy. Again, this was a fairly low maintenance job but I was perfectly happy with the outcome and the price. read more

Two and a half stars. They charged me $40 to take in the waist of a bridesmaid dress. I was told they would take in the bust a little, but I didn't notice that they had. I wore the same bra and it fit me the same around the bust. Since I was on the fence about alterations in the first place, I let it be. There was something in the notes about a corsette, but, really, there's just some wire in the front vertical around the breasts. I think I got the wedding tax added to my cost. I would say I was overcharged about ten dollars, or 30%. This place is awful! They ruined a ton of really nice clothing I needed altered. I went a lot bc it was so close to where I live and I just didn't know better. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING was ever ready for pick up the day and time promised. It just got plain ridiculous! I still had to pay full price, which is not right, if it's not ready when they promise, they need to start knocking down the price for their failure. I ended up taking half my clothes to a thrift store bc it was unwearable and not salvageable. I kept a few favorites but /i never wear them now b/c it just looks like a 5 year old worked on it. They don't respect your time or your property, and after several visits and me being nice about everything they were just rude, and I felt taken advantage of. Stay away! read more

My first trip here was a success. The second and last time, I left with a ruined dress. Both sides that I had taken in had white marks that would not come out which ruined my dress unless I wear a cardigan to cover up this error. The upside-they didn't try to charge me and apologized more than once. I had to call both times I took garments in to check on their status. I had the worst experience. I will never recommend Nelda's to anyone. I went on a recommendation from a bridal shop. I will be calling them to let them know that they should consider other tailors. Nelda's does not know how to work with delicate materials and should stick with basic alterations. I brought my dress in to be taken in around the chest and waist and to remove or alter the zipper on the side. The zipper was causing the left side of the dress to protrude from my hip. The first time I went to pick up the dress, the zipper wasn't even touched. The man who worked on the dress got extremely angry and said that he fixed it but just not the way I wanted it fixed. Other than making a profit, isn't that what your business should be doing?? You should be altering clothing the way the customer requests! The second time I went in to pick up my dress, the material covering the slip was slit open. They tried to give me an unfinished dress. The third time I went to pick up the dress, the material was sewn into the slip and there was still a wide gap. It was still unfinished! Not only that, his stitches were coming undone. And, the small alteration on the right side wasn't even done and the belt loops for a ribbon were cut off. I did not ask for this as the dress came with a ribbon to tie around the waist. I eventually asked for a manager and the owner starting working with me. She proceeded to tell me they had sewn the material back the way it originally was. Obviously the dress wasn't like this because any person could tell that the dress was either unfinished or torn, and the other side was completely different. This should have been a red flag to them. The forth time I returned, the owner had sewn the covering material together and the original problem with the zipper was more evident. I had to return a fifth time. This time, the material and slip were sewn together, but only on the left side! So, the right side flows and the left side is stuck together. I then noticed the left side of the covering material was hanging lower than the right. I started to pull on the right side to see if it would make it even. The owner told me not to do that because the material will stretch. I pointed out the left side being longer and she admitted that it was longer because of them working on it. The owner then asked if she could alter the front of the dress to fix the problem. By this time I had had it! I was completely done and couldn't trust them to work on the dress anymore. My dress cost over $200 and I will be wearing it as the maid-of-honor in a wedding in a week. It took five trips and over 30 days for me to be absolutely unsatisfied and frustrated with their results. read more

The staff here at Nelda's just did a stellar job reworking my vintage ivory lace dress into something less Renaissance and something more sophisticated and modern. The seamstress managed to preserve the delicate lace from the edge of the neckline and sleeves and reused it on the final reworked neckline and shorter sleeves. I would make sure to bring in pictures of what you want, but that's to be expected with any tailor. I couldn't have asked for anything better! They have done other dress alterations for me in the past and that's why I came back. read more

I went to Nelda's after reading all these reviews, and I must agree. I had a bridesmaid dress that needed to be hemmed. The wedding is less than a month away. I get to Nelda's at 5:26 pm, and the close at 5:30 pm. She's very gracious and stayed until after 6 pm to help me get the dress pinned up. Usual turn around time is 2 weeks, but I'm going to be out of town until the date of the wedding. Yes, I was leaving Austin for several weeks and not flying out of Austin for the wedding. I needed the dress before I left. Nelda's got that done for me in 4 days. They are AWESOME! I would recommend them to everyone. read more

I was VERY anxious about having my wedding dress altered. Naturally, I turned to Yelp and chose Nelda's because of their bridal experience. I needed the dress hemmed (a LOT because I am short, yet wide, and the dress was about five feet too long), the straps shortened, and the bust taken in. I also asked them to sew in cups (purchased from Petticoat Fair) so I wouldn't have to wear a bra, as the dress was cut low in the back. When I came in for my second fitting I was horrified to discover that the dress wouldn't zip! I was practically in tears, but the woman helping me patiently explained why it happened (in case you care: to make the bust fit they had to take in the sides, which made the dress smaller) and calmly assured me that it could be fixed. As you can imagine, the week between fittings was filled with panic attacks. But at the next fitting the dress fit perfectly. HUGE sigh of relief! In the pictures, the hem looks great, which is amazing because no one ever seems to hem my clothes correctly. I was also pleased with the turnaround time. I had two rounds of alternations in the time it took for another place to simply alter my now-husband's pants! Minor quibbles: the dressing room is teeny-tiny. Putting on my dress in such a small space, with no help, was quite a challenge. I also had to wait a bit for someone to come zip me up, which meant some unsuspecting patrons had to stare at me clutching my dress to my chest so I could keep it halfway on. I would highly recommend bringing someone with you to your appointment. And my dress was pretty wrinkled when I got it back. I probably could have asked them to press it, but I was feeling impatient to take the dress home. I'm not going to hold it against them. Also: it ain't cheap. But I suspect that their rates are comparable to any other quality establishment. I was willing to pay because I didn't want to take any chances with my dress, but if you're on a tight budget you might want to shop around. My sister was freaking out 2 days before her wedding because her dress was a little too snug, and pulling at the seams. She was terrified that on her wedding day she would burst out of it. To quell her fears, I turned to Yelp and found Nelda's. I called, they didn't guarantee anything, but let me bring it by. Everyone there was so sweet and helpful. Nelda (not sure if that's her name, but she was a beautiful, friendly woman with long gray/white hair...I feel really bad I didn't ask) was able to give her another couple of millimeters and re-sew the fabric closer to the zipper (since it was pulling). Since it was rush they charged $15 for the rush and $42.50 per hour. It was well worth it! They finished around 4:30ish (2 hours) and made sure it was perfect and my sister was happy before we left.
