I picked up my dress today, 3 months late. No ticket, no phone call, and a ruined graduation weekend. I was unable to use it for my graduation photos because she never told me it was ready. When I went to pick it up after never being told it was ready, never received a ticket, and only received intense unprofessionalism I was appalled by a $80 charge. For a hem?!?! I'm really disappointed. I Had a simple cotton skirt that needed the waist band replaced. I saw the reviews and I thought that I was going to a great place. I never got a quote from her, but I was going to trust the process. She was kind and friendly. I wrote down my phone number for her to give me a call whenever the skirt was going to be ready. She assured me that it would be done within a week. I never heard back from her. I waited a month! I went back to her and she said that she lost my number then she charged me 30 bucks. She said that she charged by the hour. I asked her if she thought she should give me a discount since she didn't call me to let me know it was not ready. She said she charged by the hour. The house is a little hard to find but there's a small, quaint sign on the side of this house on the street. You can park on the side or in the drive way if no one is there. I knocked on the door and both times I did not see a dog. The interior is not like an actual shop - I believe it is her home. It's very cozy on the inside but don't expect extravagant interior design. The lady is extremely friendly and so sweet. She asked me about my life but was very quick to look at my dress. It took about 45 minutes to pin down parts of my dress and about 2 days to cut off some length. The dress turned out great! It costed about $45 in cash. I took a gamble and trusted Fine Stitch with my wedding dress. I bought the dress used online and made the mistake of trying to wash the hem on my own. I shrank the silk, but Jenny slightly shortened the dress for me so that the hem is beautiful and even again. She also fixed the delicate lacework on the outside of the dress (when I got it in the mail I was super distressed to find an undisclosed tear on the hip... Jenny fixed it right up). Was her shop clean? nope. Was it fast service? No... but I told her to take her sweet time (2.5 weeks), so that's my bad. I think if you were very clear about your timeline for your garment and if you advocated for yourself by calling to check in on it, it should be fine. Haters gonna hate, and it's not the most frou frou of shops... but dang, some other places were quoting me $250 for a basic wedding gown hem, and she did it for less than half of that. Glad I went with Fine Stitch instead of the other expensive bridal places! If you're super picky and/or weird about dust bunnies, don't go. If you're a thrifty bride who isn't in the mood to spend dumb money on dress alterations, I'd recommend Jenny. read more

I just called the business to ask for a price & time estimate and the person who picked up the phone seemed disinterested in answering my questions and hung up immediately after without giving me a chance to respond or ask any clarification questions. Just from her uninviting demeanor and her hanging up the phone on me-- she immediately lost me as a potential client. Her unwillingness to communicate effectively also makes me question her ability to cater to the specific needs of clientele who have custom requests with their alternations. I am a strong believer in reviewing the businesses I use - the good, the bad, and the ugly. I hate to say it but my experience with Jenny was ugly (yup, worse than bad!). First, the bad. I went to her for alterations on a bridesmaid dress I needed for a wedding. When I went to pick up my dress, there were two patches (on the outside) to cover holes she said she discovered when working on the dress. It was a brand new dress, but fine - let's assume there were 2 small holes near the seams. Patches? On the outside of sheer black material? But fine, let's assume patches were the right thing to do. Two different, rather large oddly-shaped patches with frayed edges? Seriously? If you have to use patches, at least make them neat, small, and presentable. I wish I could show you guys photos - but suffice it to say she didn't care enough to spend the time to make the best of the situation. Now, unfortunately, is the ugly. When I picked up the dress, I noticed the patches and asked her about them. She told me about the holes she discovered. I asked her if patches were the only solution and if there were other creative fixes we could do. Then for some reason, she got visibly angry and started yelling that she didn't have time to explain it to me and that I wasn't getting it. It was shocking to say the least. I asked her (politely, though I was starting to get upset) if we have to do patches, could she make the patches symmetrical with no frayed edges. She continued to yell, telling me I was frustrating her and she did what she could. Ultimately I ended up paying her ($75!) and leaving as it was clear she wasn't going to hear me out. So there you have it. I paid $75 for alterations and now I have to take the dress to someone else to repair or try to repair it myself. Bad work can be a fluke or an indication not to use a business, but horrible customer service is just not acceptable. read more

The lady at fine stitch (I think her name was Jenny?) did an awesome job on my jeans that were about 6+ inches too long. She took the time to figure out exactly what I wanted, gave me recommendations on the best length for the type of cut of the jean and made sure I was happy before and after she altered. All for a super affordable price! I think I paid less than $15 for the alteration and she had it finished within a few hours. I will be returning with any other alterations I need. read more

This itsy bitsy alteration shop is located right off Avenue B on 40th street on a side of a building and owned and operated by one lady, Jenny Lee. She's friendly, efficient, and reasonably-priced. An added bonus is being able to "walk" my errands and support a neighborhood store. I had a few suits and skirts hemmed and repaired and it was ready by the week's end. If you need it sooner, you just call her and ask for it on a specific day and she'll have it done. She'll be rather quick/curt on the phone but it's only because she's in demand. Not to worry she will pay more attention to your needs when you're in her shop. Highly recommended! P.S. It's best to just drop by during her work hours instead of calling, as she rarely answers the phone or checks her messages. read more

I've never ever had jeans hemmed before, so I couldn't tell you how Jenny's work compares to others'. But, what I do know is customer service, and Jenny's was top notch. I came in around 3pm on Friday with jeans in hand. She told me to go put them on. She saw I had flats on, and asked if I'd brought in heels just in case. I had so I put the heels on with the jeans and she sat on the floor and got to work. She gave me two lengths to choose from then noted that the jeans had a bit of stretch in them and adjusted the length to compensate for bunching. Wow! What a pro! She quoted me two prices: $9 something if I didn't care to keep the original hem, $15.10 with tax if I did. I appreciated her being upfront about the prices and not just trying to upsell me. I got a call at around 10am on Tuesday to let me know my jeans were ready. And they looked awesome when I picked them up and the fit was great, original hem and all! read more

Found Fine Stitch through Yelp and was not disappointed. I just had some jeans hemmed, but I didn't have any of the issues mentioned in other reviews. I called earlier in the day to make sure I didn't need to make an appointment, dropped them off right before she closed and they were ready to pick up the next day by lunch. Also, I have to add that she didn't JUST hem my jeans. Being that I'm short, the flare of the jeans weren't really suited to my frame, so she also took in the width of the flares as well! Saw some wedding dresses there as well, so I would definitely recommend her if you are looking to alter your wedding dress too! Location is also great and easy to get to. Since becoming completely obsessed with Sartorialist blog, I decided to concentrate on the "fit" rather than just the "look" of my clothes. I just purchased the most beautiful vintage dress, but the straps were a bit long and exposed my non existent, negative A cup boobies, which of course, would be a scary sight for anyone! I was thinking of being ghetto and just safety pinning, but after reading about Jenny Lee's dexterous skills and reasonable prices, I decided to pop over to her little store. Besides my gorgeous vintage frock, I brought two other dresses that needed to be taken in at the waist. Since i was bringing three garments, I was nervous that it will cost me an arm and a leg (student budget). PLUS, i got a quote from My Cleaners (excellent dry cleaning service) the week before and they said each garment will range from 20-25 dollars a pop. YIKeS! all three of my dresses cost less than 25 a piece so that just wasn't worth it. So I modeled the three dresses for Jenny and she immediately recognized the problem and told me what she would do to make it fit better. dress 1: take up the straps (straightforward) dress 2: awkward gap in the back, making the dress kind of shapeless. Jenny suggestion: just take it in the back a little instead of re-routing the entire dress and losing the nice draping in the front (right on!) dress 3: I didn't like how the skirt looked huge and billowy. Wanted a slimmer silhouette. Jenny solution: hmm...it looks like it might just be a worn out waistband (damn you Forever21 and your cheap goods). I might not have to do anything major, just change out the bands. ME: okay......i trust you. Jenny: see you in a week and by golly, she called me in about 5 days and it was all done! I tried on the altered dresses and all 3 came out perfectly! I mean, better than perfect! She did such an impeccable job. What's even crazier is that the entire total was 37 dollars! WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I pledge my allegiance to the Sartorialist and Jenny Lee for making this poor girl look damnnnnnn gooood. Menswear too! I took two pair of suit pants to be hemmed, one straight and one cuffed. They were very professionally done, broke perfectly across the shoes and needed no fixes or additional work when I picked them up. She said it would take about a week and it was only about 4-5 days. Excellent work, a very fair price, and a very nice lady. She also has an excellent front desk dog who will entertain you while you wait. This a small place with tiny sign at the corner of Ave B and 40th. The door faces 40th and is towards the back of the building. Don't let the scale of the place fool you. She is first rate. I have used 4-5 other tailors over the years and I will go back to Jenny from now on. Support small business! read more

Jenny does an amazing job on alterations! I brought in a silk blouse that I loved but could only find in a M (I'm an XXS-XS). The blouse featured Lambskin cuffs that had about 10 snap button closures and lambskin trim in the front. I dropped my shirt off Friday afternoon and mentioned that I needed it as soon as possible. Even though she was very busy, Jenny got my blouse to me by Tuesday. In addition to taking a ton of fabric off the sides she also shifted all the buttons on both cuffs to make the cuff smaller. All of this also only cost $24.75 which was very reasonable given that the shirt was a Silk Chiffon blouse and the sheer number of buttons that had to be moved. I would definitely stop by if you need anything altered. While I've heard that it can take her some time to get large orders done, she does excellent work. I'd recommend her to anyone. Jenny does a great job on alterations and her detail work is excellent. She has altered jeans, pants, suits and shirts for me all with superb work. Recently she shortened a heavy pullover sweater at the sleeves, but took up the material from the shoulders in order to keep the original sleeve hem - you cannot even tell it was altered. She also recently altered two pair of flannel type sweatpants that fit perfectly in the waist, but were about 2 inches long - great job making them look like the original hems. Jenny is very reasonable in her prices and very honest - I had another sweater and I wanted the sleeves shortened. She told me it could not be shortened properly as it was fitted and it would have bunched up on my upper arms, so I did not have that item altered. If there is one negative, it is what others have mentioned in previous reviews -- her timing and locating what you dropped off. I solve that problem by attaching my business card to my alterations so she can easily find them if I call her - but I am not asking for items to be finished in an express fashion and usually the items are ready in a week. Also, bring her dog Suie Suie a treat - you will get some bonus points, plus Suie Suie is a cute little dog! read more

Now I'll admit, all I asked of Jenny was to hem a pair of jeans - a cakewalk compared to taking in a dress or whatever. I came in on a Tuesday morning (nice dog!) and she had them done by Friday morning, all for ten bucks. The stitching seems welldone and straight, and the hem itself looks great. The only detail that says these jeans were hemmed is the thread she used is a slightly different color than the original (but I don't care). I've only been there twice, but she seems to have a steady flow of customers, and there are a lot of clothes on the rack, which makes me believe she does good business. Jenny herself is really nice and easy to deal with, and I'll be back there soon with the rest of my jeans. Hooray for being short! read more

Hooray for clothes that fit the way I want them to! Jenny is a sweet lady who definitely knows what she is doing, and doesn't charge you an arm and a leg! I had a bridesmaid dress hemmed for $30 dollars (probably easily double that if I had it hemmed at the Bridal shop, methinks). It turned out well and you can't tell that it ever had to be altered at the bottom. Also, I had a pair of very flare-y jeans turned into more of a boot-cut (Don't judge I only bought them because they were on sale and my fave brand!). They turned out perfect and I'll definitely be getting more use out of them. I believe that was a good $18 dollar investment! Her shop looks a little scattered, but if it works for her, then it works for her. And her estimated time may be a little skewed on when you actually end up being able to pick up your clothes. Her workplace is located on 40th Street and Avenue B, the entrance is on the side along 40th Street, facing the church. The sign is not easy to find but you will see it on the side door with a "People Loves Us on Yelp" sticker. I was given a bridesmaid dress that is 6 times too big and had to seek Jenny to rescue me. I like her work and agree with others that she isn't a very organized person. You have to call from time to time to check where your things are. She is a sweet lady though. read more

When I lived around the corner from Fine Stitch I've driven and pedaled by hundreds of times without noticing it. One day walking I noticed it. Most of my shirts, pants and jackets come from the Big & Tall, and I'm only one of those. I have to get most of my pants hemmed. I've been charged at some places 30-40% more for a few more inches of hemming. Jenny has good and fair prices, good turnaround times, and most importantly incredible work. read more

A friend recommended A Fine Stitch for an alteration to a bride's maid dress, and after checking the yelp reviews, I went on in. I am glad I did, she was fast, sweet, and honest. She got the dress done days before it she said it would. I wanted to alter more, and with her expert eye, said, leave it, it will end up costing you more, and no one will notice. She also ended up saying, "You have the best dress on the season, YOU REALLY COULD wear this dress again". Although I may never wear this dress again, it was appreciated. I've now used Fine Stitch a couple of times and fully expect to be a return customer. The quality of work is great and the prices are very reasonable, especially considering how quickly she finished up the first pair of pants I had hemmed. I'm pretty sure she called me to come pick them up about two hours after I dropped them off. Impressive first experience for sure. So why three stars and not more? Because (like others have said) it's not very organized or professional over there. The second thing I asked Jenny to help me with was a simple patch job on some pants and after not hearing from her for a couple of weeks I called only to learn she didn't know where the pants were exactly. She knew she had them, just couldn't lay hands on them. Not a big deal. The request wasn't emergent and I was confident she'd find them. And she did. But between me dropping them off and ultimately picking them up was almost a month. Granted, I wasn't in a big rush to get them back, but had I not called when I did, I'm not sure I'd have them yet. It's cash or check only, no plastic. Fine. For the low prices she charges, I don't mind. She's talented and friendly enough, but don't call on Saturdays because the guy that answered when I did wasn't friendly at all. (She must live above her shop and after 5 and on weekends the number goes from Fine Stitch to private residence and the gentleman of the house did not care to be disturbed that day.) Overall, my Fine Stitch experience is right in line with all of the one-woman-show alterations places I've ever used. Solid quality, a bit lacking in other areas. read more
