Since I don't get many things altered, I'm glad that I consulted Yelp before deciding on Fine Stitch. Like what most people have written Jenny Lee is super nice, friendly, and offers good advice to try to save you as much money as possible. I believe she's comparable to what other alterations places charges - not sure if she's any cheaper. She does charge by the hour though which I find interesting because other places I called charges according to the work that needs to be done. I would give the place four stars, but I deducted one for slow service. She's not the best at answering her phone, which in my situation I didn't mind since I work super close to her store, but I can see how it would be annoying for somebody who does not live in that area. Not to mention she doesn't call you - you have to call her. She seems to give everybody that ten day window, but I think that's her own 'grace period.' I called her about 8 days after I had dropped the dress off (I didn't think it would take very long since I only needed one thing fixed on my dress), and she hadn't even started on it yet! She told me that it would be done in two days. Luckily I didn't need the dress altered ASAP - maybe if you tell her that you need something done right away she'll put your request towards the front of her queue. Her place is hard to find since it's in some random house that she shares with another company. She did great work altering a dress for me. She is not the most organized person-- I called to check on the dress and she told me she had lost it. She found it a couple minutes later, so all was well--but if I hadn't read the Yelp review that mentioned the disorganization I would have been worried. But I trusted the Yelpers and it worked out. The work was done quickly and she was extremely nice and helpful. One thing: she just takes cash! (Maybe checks.) No credit cards... which meant I had to pay the last few dollars in quarters. read more

I was the maid of honor for my sister's wedding, and when she sent me my dress it was an oddly shaped Etsy choice that was basically a trash bag with an empire waist sash. I could not figure out a flattering way to wear it as-is, so I brought it to Jenny the week before the wedding! She thought it was such an odd dress, too, and was concerned at the short amount of time, but she got it done in just a few days, so I had it in plenty of time for the wedding! She is very affordable, as she only charged about $40 for a hem, and taking in a ton of fabric on the side. I know it must've been hard since it was a weirdly shaped dress. She even showed me how to tie it with to sash to make attractive pleats! I will say that you can not get her on the phone, either because it doesn't work or she never answers. Often she has told me that she called to say it was ready, but I never got a call! Your best bet is to just go there during business hours. I've never had a problem with her not being there. When I still lived in Austin, I would always take my jeans to get hemmed here. She does a great job (and fast too...within a few days), and the price is pretty reasonable. I was recommended here by a friend, and I'm glad I came! One bad thing: a pair of jeans that I took here got lost in her big pile once. Not forever, but just long enough that even I had forgotten that I had taken it here. Jenny was really nice, and it was obvious when I walked in that she is well-liked and respected. There was an older couple inside, and they were joking and laughing so they seemed to be regular customers. The woman even gave Jenny a hug before leaving. It did smell like her dog a bit, but the dog was really cute and friendly so it was okay... and no dog hair on my clothes when I got them back! I came in to get two pants hemmed- one jean and one corduroy skinny jean, and she did a great job. She was patient in giving me several length options until I was happy. She called me a few days later and said they were ready! I had noticed a tear on a shirt in the meantime so when I came to pick up my pants, I asked if she had time to fix my shirt real quick while I was waiting, and she did. For the tear in the shirt and the two pants, it was $23. Very reasonable I think. Somewhat hard to find if you don't know the Hyde Park area. Plenty of curbside street parking. read more

First: Jenny did a great job with the dress I needed altered for a wedding. I have no qualms whatsoever about the actual work she does with a needle and thread. Everything turned out beautiful. But my experience with Fine Stitch was definitely compromised by some of the business practices I encountered. I took my dress to be altered in late February; the wedding wasn't until July, but I just needed it hemmed, and I figured I might as well get it out of the way. Apparently, Jenny called me back in early March when it was ready, but the call never came through, and I never got a voicemail. There was a period in early March when my phone was broken, so I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt and say she did call, but due to technical difficulties, I didn't get the message. However, I used to work in retail, and we had special orders. If people didn't pick up their special order within 10 days after the initial call, we called them again. And again. And again. I never got a follow-up call from Jenny. That doesn't seem to be a very good business practice. In April, I began to wonder about my dress. I called Jenny; no answer. I went by her shop several times over the period of three weeks; nobody was there. I kept calling and calling. It took almost two months before she picked up the phone and told me my dress had been ready and waiting for me since March. So while my dress now fits perfectly, I'm not entirely thrilled with the way business works at Fine Stitch, especially because there's no way to leave a voice mail when you call. read more

I'm all about ethical business practices. I brought some pants in to her to be hemmed. The hem on both pant legs was different in length. If I'm paying you for your expertise, it should be done correctly. First she tried to argue that they were the same and then the ruler came out only to discover they were not. Here's the issue I have. She raised the price on me. When I asked her why I should be paying for her mistake. She said because it's her time. Well sorry lady, but never again will I bring anything to you. Sloppy work and very rude! I did not budge on the price increase because that's just plain BS in my opinion. read more

As cute as the dog is, I won't be coming here for alterations. I came in for an estimate because I had a leather jacket that I needed fixing. It was a gift from my family and was not cheap, so I wanted to know all my options. I also heard leather was sort of tricky. She told me the pricing, which was much lower than anything I had heard so far (so that was nice), however, she began poking my jacket with pins. In the meantime, another customer came in. When I repeated to her that I just want an estimate, she gave me this annoyed look. I took the pins out and started to ask a question, then she kicked me out. Like literally shoved me towards the door. So, I won't be returning. I can't comment on her work, but her attitude needs some improving. read more

I have been trying to find an alteration place in Austin for a while that was reasonably priced (pay by hour not by item) and after doing a little bit of research, I was excited to take my items here. On Thursday 4/16, I brought in a long dress, long skirt that needing length taken off and another skirt that just needed to be re-stitched because it had been torn on the side. She pinned my items and asked when I needed it by but I didn't need the items back immediately, so she just told me that if I didn't get a call from her Wednesday that I should call her Thursday. I didn't get a chance to call her until Monday 4/27 and was told that she hadn't finished and I should come in on Wednesday. I tried on my items and it seemed fine enough but when I got home and really looked, I was upset. My dress is floor length and it is not one of those dresses that is intentionally long in the back and short in the front. She had taken off more length in the back by 1/4-1/2 inches and the stitching was horribly uneven. My other two items were ok but not as poorly done as my dress. Thursday 4/30, I came back in with my dress to show her what I didn't like and how unhappy I was with how it turned out. I showed her the length of my uneven dress and the very crooked stitching. She then asked me if she had pinned me and that everyone's body is different so she took off how much she pinned. I told her that when I brought in the dress it wasn't intended to be different lengths...they are meant to be the same in the front and the back. She got defensive quickly and told me I was the expert so I should tell her what to do. She started to pin my dress as I was holding it and asked if I wanted her to cut off more length to make it even. She was upset and I had offended her, which is not what I intended to do. I kept saying how I was expecting great work from her and that I was disappointed in this item. I just do not know how she has gotten away with tailoring items that are uneven - especially a long dress that IS NOT meant to be different lengths. It just does not make any sense to me. She was extremely unprofessional. It seemed like other clients have a good relationship with her but unfortunately, how she conducted business with me was not acceptable. I came back for a THIRD time that week to pick up my item and to which was done OK. The stitching color was wrong. I do not recommend this tailor at all. read more

I was looking for somewhere more personal and closer than driving to the mall and getting clothing altered there. Jenny is super good and the prices are resonable. She's also extremely fast. I had a pair of jeans shortened and a dress shorted Monday, and got a call about them being ready by Tuesday. I know that's dependent on how much she has on her plate, but it is definitely appreciated that even though I said I didnt need them until Friday, that she went ahead and got to my clothing. She's also got an eye herself and will make pretty good suggestions about alternation lengths and draping. Like the first reviewer said, the place is a tiny shop off the side of a house. I had to call her before I figured out that it is on the NW corner of 40th and Ave. B. I needed to get my suit jacket taken in last summer and she did a fantastic job! Jenny has had her little shop there since the early 80s so she's been at it a long time and seems very knowledgeable about what looks fitting. I was thinking about getting my suit skirt shortened and let out too but she told me not to because the length and fit of the pencil skirt were appropriate for interviews (and now that I think about it, I'm glad I didn't). Therefore, she gives you her honest opinion instead of fixing your clothes just for the money. Given that she's the only person working there, the turn around is quick. She usually tells you to pick up your clothes after 10 days, but if you need it done earlier she'll do it. Another plus is that it's very close to UT campus -- a 5 minute drive or a 10 minute bus ride. As I don't use a tailor often, I'm not sure what's considered reasonable pricing, but I didn't mind paying $17 for the quality work on my jacket. This is in comparison to Ace Tailors where I was appalled that a simple shortening of a dress cost me $40 + tax and the employees were impersonal and a little rude. I dropped off a wool peacoat to be taken in a couple of days ago at Fine Stitch without reservation, and have no doubt that I will be satisfied. read more

I needed a few pairs of pants hemmed quickly as I was leaving Austin for a business trip. Jenny was great! She discussed the options with me based on the style of the pant and had them done the SAME DAY!!! All three pairs for $39. I am so impressed by how friendly and knowledgeable she is. Her prices are definitely fair. The shop is a bit untidy but don't let that scare you away, she is well worth it. Jenny is the best. She has tailored 3 dresses that I found at thrift stores, 1 beautiful one from Anthropologie, a long sleeved shirt I wanted made into a short sleeved shirt, and a few pairs of pants. I am never disappointed. They are always ready on time, or earlier. She might be a little disorganized, but that is not a problem with me. She's never just lost something of mine. Sometimes she'll ask you to call and remind her to do something, and I do and she gets it done on time. To me it's not a big deal. As you can tell when you go in there, she has a lot of work and she works alone so I don't mind helping the process with a 30 second phone call. I have never found her to be rude. She is professional and always polite. Last BUT NOT LEAST, she is affordable and always works with you in terms of what you want. We've been going to Jenny for over 25 years. She is amazing. She has made bridesmaid and flower girl dresses from scratch for us and they were simply gorgeous. Recently my daughter had an Italian made size 2 wedding gown that was breathtaking and had bead work and lace that was extremely elaborate. The train and the vail were Cathedral length. So, I figured I'll try calling them to ask how soon can they get it altered. But, despite several calls, no response! I figured there might be something wrong with the phone, so I even went to their office but the office was locked (during working hours). I asked an elderly asian man who was fixing something next door and he tells me to come back in an hour. What is the point of posting service hours if you are not going to be there. I had a horrible experience with Fine Stitch. I took my wedding dress in to get hemmed and when I got it back it had several holes in it (like scissor cuts). I was told I brought it in like that but I know for sure I didn't. I also have a hard time believing that while she was on the floor pinning the dress she wouldn't have noticed several cuts in the dress (if I had brought it in that way). She didn't own up to the issue and now my dress is ruined. I wouldn't even take old jeans to this place. Beware! read more

Had them fixed up and in hand after less than 2 hours and for $12 - less expensive than other places I've used in town, and without the week turn around. That's what I need in a good tailor. Jenny was so accomodating and friendly! I took 3 pairs of jeans to be hemmed and I was on a major time crunch because I was graduating and leaving on vacation in 2 days. I called ahead of time to ask if there was any way she could do the alterations in one day. So I took my jeans in just before she closed on a thursday, she cuffed them all according to my wishes, and called me back Friday at 10am to tell me my jeans were ready! The hems are quality and she matched the seams really nicely. The price was totally reasonable - just about $10 per hem - and she is incredibly convenient for anyone in the Hyde park area. I can't speak to her work on larger alterations but it looked like she had plenty of business. I will definitely return to Jenny for future alteration needs. read more

Jenny's prices are fantastic and she has a cute little dog that hands around in the "shop". I had three pairs of pants that needed alternations. All of which needed to be hemmed, and one pair needed the waist taken in. The pair of jeans I brought in I had requested the original hem. What was the cost $48. That is pretty exceptional. I know ACE Tailors would have charged like $70 seeing that original hem on jeans is like $25. The drawback is that the original hem felt like the jeans had been folded over and over with about 3 layers in the hem and they don't lay flat. When I dropped my items off I asked when I should pick them up and she said 10 days. I called her two weeks later and she asked me why I didn't call her to let her know I needed them. I guess I thought that was obvious when I dropped them off and she told me to pick them up 10 days later. She then agreed to get them done that next day so I could pick them up. Maybe I am a little OCD, but I don't feel easy seeing such chaos. There are clothes everywhere with no organization that I can see. I am kind of surprised nothing has been lost. When you call to check on your items, make sure you know exactly what you brought because she doesn't ask your name you are only known as the person with three pairs of pants, including a pair of jeans which needs to hemmed with the original hem. The price is fair, the location is great, but keep in mind she is only open 9-5 M-F and she does not take anything but cash or check. If you aren't in a rush and you have hours in the week that you can go by, check her out. I have moved on. read more
