Ace Tailor is a Total Gem! I have to shout out Ace Tailor on North Lamar because they are absolute wizards with a needle and thread. I brought in a few clothing items I'd pretty much given up on--pants that were too long, a jacket that made me look like a kid playing dress-up, and a zipper that had completely given up on life. Not only did they fix everything perfectly, but it was all done quickly and for way less than I expected. Seriously, the value is incredible. I've paid way more elsewhere for way less impressive results. The staff is super friendly and efficient, and they don't make you feel weird for bringing in a pile of chaotic clothing "projects." Lisa is so incredibly kind and transparent with her work. She listened to me explain what I wanted, and then she explained what she can do and what we shouldn't do with certain items (i.e., breaking it down to show if we take this area in, this area won't look right, etc). She also explained exactly how she would be altering the clothing, which was reassuring to me and appreciated. She finished alterations in a few days, and everything looks and feels great; she is very talented. She knew how the clothes would drape and clearly had an advance understanding of the nuances of alterations. The cost was much higher than other tailors I've went to. Lisa is alterations GODDESS. I'm 6"8 and 225, clothes never fit right and generally I try to accept that with good humor... always rolling up my sleeves to hide that they end at my forearms. Or accepting that if something fits well around my chest it will feel like a tent around my midsection. I've used tailors my whole life with varying results. This time it was critical to me, my uniforms (Army/ both OCP and A class) I wanted to look good in. My ASU's were absolutely ridiculously ILL FITTNG. I thought there was no hope. Lisa and her team went to work on them clearly understanding how important this was to me and I don't know why Lisa knows everything, not only about fit, but about the army's insanely strict 670 regulations. And she's just a cool, warm person who's fun to talk to to boot!!! Well I got my uniforms back and I feel sharp as a tax and dressed to the 9's. They have a customer for life. read more

I usually go to Art Alterations on Congress (highly recommend) which I love, but I moved to Clarksville and came here because of the reviews. I needed to take in a dress and right away the the woman was snotty and rude, told me that a zipper could not be added or the fabric would pull, and if she pinned the dress to take it in, the pins would tear the dress when I took it off. She seemed incredibly inconvenienced and irritated that I had come in at all, and was basically telling me my dress could not be taken in. If she tried, it would be $120 minimum, which I would have done because the dress was too big and I had to do something, had she not been so rude about it. As a business owner, it truly boggles me why anyone would be so overtly rude to paying clients, but I certainly wasn't going to ask her. So I went to Art Alterations where they added a beautifully done zipper, with very minimal pulling for $78. read more

I am 5 feet tall so I have trouble wearing a lot of dresses bc they are too long in the tour/too revealing. I took them into Austin Alterations. They were very kind and welcoming. I don't have any experience with alterations. They explained in detail the process of tailoring each dress and also tried to set expectations on what was possible vs what was not. I REALLY appreciated this transparency and I felt comfortable asking questions. I just tried on all the finished products and they all look so good! The work is not even noticeable and all my sheer/delicate fabric dresses look the same just tighter/closed up in the chest/sleeve area. Work done was at a fair price done in a timely manner Went here the first time in 2017 to get my bridal dress altered - got a recommendation from a friend who has gone here to get her dresses/pants altered. This most recent time I went beginning of January 2020 to get a bridesmaids dress hemmed and altered a bit, though it was special order from the bridesmaid's dress shop, it still needed some fixing (hey don't blame me I got short girl genes, kay?)... anywho.. I went in, told the ladies exactly what I needed fixing/altering and they got to work putting pins in my dress and asking me constantly throughout the entire process of determining how much/where I needed trimming/fixing, "Is this right? Laura, at Austin Alterations is the best! I trust her to alter everything that I have. She recently altered two coats of mine that were quite expensive--by designer Rick Owens, and she did an unbelievably great job. I was slightly nervous initially because each coat literally costs thousands of dollars, but when I picked them up, she exceeded my expectations. Also, for some context, I am very, very particular about most things, but especially the way my clothing fits me. And because of this I tend to ask a lot of questions. Laura's patient, listens openly, and she takes the time to always explain exactly how they are going to alter the piece, to achieve the look I'm after. She also uses the highest quality fabrics. I also really respect her because she is incredibly careful. If I say I want something done, and it may not work, Laura walks me through why it won't work, and gives alternative options. I have never made a negative post about a business before but how I was treated was unacceptable. I came for a bridesmaid dress fitting and wanted basic alterations and was very relaxed with how the tailor wanted to do it. When she charged me at the counter is was shockingly high and when I asked about changes we could make to make it cheaper she told me to go somewhere else. there was no reason for her to be so rude to me when I was not rude to her and was asking for her help. I came here to get a bridesmaids dress altered and the lady was really rude honestly. I am a student at UT from out of state so I don't know a lot about altering clothes and how much that should cost in general but she charged me $45 to shorten the SPAGHETTI straps of my dress and $120 to hem it. I wish I would have gone somewhere else but I felt pressured. I asked the employee if there were any more affordable places (as that is a lot to spend on a dress that I already spent $250 on) and they remarked that they had no idea and couldn't speak for the way in which other places would do the alterations (implying that they were the only people who did things the right way). I understand that as her job, she has to shut down competition but I just felt taken advantage of. In the end I paid $165 + tip (they make you tip before you even get your clothes back). read more

When a loved one passes, your mind is fumbling with actions you can take. This is a mental defense you might construct to put off the grieving. It's perfectly reasonable. We all do what we have to do to get through things. One of the million thoughts that eventually came to my mind was "I need a suit for the funeral." But I was running out of time. I came to Brenda to tailor the ill-fitting suit I had. She had very short notice, but was able to fit me in. The suit perhaps isn't my exact size, as it is a 42 and I am more of a 40, but Brenda gave me her honest opinion on what would be essential fixes for a clean look. After the quick turnaround on a reasonable price, I was very happy with the result. Something so innocuous as having a finely tailored suit can help one's demeanor in a serious time. Overall, they did a nice job on my alterations and were friendly. With that said, they are WAYYYY overpriced. They charged me over $160 to simple shorten one dress and take in the spaghetti straps of another. I asked them to add a simple hook and loop (I have no talent and literally could do this), and they charged me $15 for this alone!! They didn't add the hook and loop before I went to pick it up, so they did it while I waited and it took them 5 minutes. That was a ridiculous price for such little work. Also, my alterations were done a day late with no warning or heads up! I had an event to go to (which they new about), and still I had to get there just to be turned around because they didn't get to it yet after they had my items for over a week. Again, the work was alright but the customer service and price need improvement. read more

Brenda is a fantastic tailor who listens and understands what you want, but is also practical and knowledgeable about what works best for the garment. I brought in an evening gown for my trip to Cannes a week before flying, needing a hem and some alterations. I let her know I needed it within one week, and she agreed to get it done. To my surprise it was completed in just a few days, and the work was exceptional. There are few quality tailors in Austin you can truly trust with your clothing- that both understand what you want in style and fit, but are also realistic about what you can achieve with the sizing and material of the item itself. Brenda is one of those top tailors, if not the flat out best in the city. She's been working 35+ years, and her know-how, savvy, and speed- without sacrificing quality- speaks to that experience. My boyfriend has been getting his suits tailored by her for the last decade and recommended her, but this was my first experience- and the first dress we had taken to her. It came out beautifully. I rarely leave something as important as bridesmaid dress alterations to the last minute, especially for a wedding in which I am the MOH to my only sister/sibling, yet, there I found myself last week in Austin with a deeper v-neck than I wanted on display for family and friends. I flew in from CA on Wednesday, they told me to come in as soon as possible, and reassured me they would do whatever they could to help. Not only was the work and craftsmanship impeccable, but I didn't give them an easy task in asking them to come up with a solution in order to source fabric to match the rest of the dress in order to close up the front and keep "the girls" on a PG-level. I am so impressed by their resourceful and creative ideas, as I threw them a monumental request to perform in LESS THAN ONE DAY (!!) - not to mention the custom couture result they gave me. The head seamstress is amazing and very candid about managing expectations before taking on a project. She has altered bikini tops, gowns, slacks, pant suits, and many other items for me. They also do a wonderful job with dry cleaning on delicate and expensive items. My only complaint is that they often close before their business hours say that they well and don't answer the phone during business hours, which is a little frustrating if you need some thing in a rush. read more
