Avoid if you don't want to be disappointed. One of the owners, Alex, reached out to my husband after his first experience here was less than stellar (cocktails took nearly an hour). He asked if there was anything he could do, so my husband suggested reservations for Valentine's Day. Alex said sure, 5:45. My husband confirmed. So we got dressed up, went to the restaurant, and the reservation wasn't in the system. After a lot of back and forth, the best they could do is an hour wait in the lounge downstairs. The owner INVITED my husband! What an embarrassing way to run a restaurant. Now we are scrambling on Valentine's Day with nowhere to go. Can't imagine this place will last. read more

There are meals and then there are *dining experiences*. There are restaurants that need some time to work out the kinks upon first opening and then there are those that immediately shine. Haymarket is the latter in both cases. When I first read about Haymarket, my spidey senses (plus years of monitoring new openings) told me that it would be a formidable newcomer to the NYC dining scene, one that could quickly become one of those spots that is impossible to get a reservation at. Trying a new spot in its first couple days can be a crapshoot, but I had a feeling I would not regret taking the risk. And wow, did Haymarket deliver, exceeding expectations at every turn. The food, European with Caribbean influences, is singular and creative, sophisticated and refined, whimsical and quirky, and executed to perfection. Spots like Haymarket are why I remain devoted to the foodie life and for that I am so grateful. At 8:45 on a Saturday night, upon stepping into this beautiful, lively space, we were enthusiastically greeted by the host, clearly buzzing with excitement (and probably adrenaline). I had thought that the restaurant officially opened the night before, but the host told us that the night before was their soft opening for friends and family and that we were there for the first service open to everyone. A momentous occasion that was very cool to experience. As we settled in and opened the drink menu, we quickly realized that deliberations would be challenging here. Every cocktail was both intriguing and appealing. I started with the I Have A Martini Kink (vodka, vermouth, raspberry, lychee, lemongrass, szechuan) and my partner had the Hay Barbie (mezcal, aquavit, cachaça, beets, ginger, saffron). For our second round, I got The White Mirage (gin, bergamot, aromatized wine, aperitivo, vetiver) and my partner got the Lucky Plum (gin, umeboshi, fig leaf, coriander, soda). I have gone to a dizzying number of fancy cocktail bars in my life and I can say with certainty that the drinks here rival the very best that mixologists have to offer. They were all outstanding, but the Hay Barbie and The White Mirage were particularly astounding in their flavor profiles. True genius, true art. Food-wise, I think it's safe to say you can't go wrong. The menu is impeccably curated with an impressive range of preparations. Everything is designed for sharing, and you'd be silly not to try as much as possible here, an approach that sharing facilitates. Each dish showcases expert technique and artistry with flavors that are both astounding and harmonious. Eats, below: Tuna Crudo w/ aji amarillo, avocado, radish: A+ Light, fresh, with very thinly sliced avocado and radish and a glorious both of aji amarillo that had just a hint of spice. Bibb Salad w/ sour cream + onion, everything crumble: A+ Our server told us that each bite magically tasted like a sour cream and onion chip and that it did. The everything crumble was from potato chips made from scratch, which alone is impressive. It's on the smaller side as far as salads go, so order two if you're on the fence. Grilled Prawn w/ bouillabaisse, chili crisp: A++ Minds were starting to be blown at this point. The prawn was cooked to perfection and that chili crisp-bouillabaisse flavor/texture combo was just next level. Pan-Seared Dorade w/ spring potatoes, asparagus, anchoïade: A+ The sear on this fish was beautiful (Gordon Ramsay voice implied). The dish was bright and delicate, and I basically licked the plate clean because of how good the anchoïade was. Roast Half Chicken w/ peri peri, ranch, snow pea salad: A++ The signature dish here is this one-of-a-kind peri peri chicken, as visually enticing as it is delicious. Accompanied by a cute little salad served in turquoise ceramic chicken (let that sink in for a second...and peep the photo). The first bite left me speechless. Our incredible meal was made even better by the great service, which is always appreciated but was particularly impressive on this night given that Haymarket just opened and you never know how a concept may take on a life of its own when fully manifested. Everyone working here was friendly, attentive, efficient, and helpful. As a young foodie in training, anytime I went to a great restaurant, I I'd ask my parents with some degree of desperation if they could promise that we'd return, my brain incapable of accepting the possibility that I may never have such an experience again. I found myself doing the same thing here with my partner, despite the fact that I am now, in fact, an adult with autonomy who doesn't need permission for such things. I suppose this experience activated a childlike part of me, which is a testament to the chef and operations staff, who created an experience that evokes a sense of play, a seriously great venture that does not take itself too seriously. read more

Normally I don't leave review. But my dinner experience here prompted me to leave on. Let me start by honestly saying the food were not bad and the ambience was actually pretty good. However, the waiting time for the food is among the longest ever in all my dining experiences. It was well over an hour from the time we sat down to getting our food on the table. The waiter took our request for the drinks right after we sat and it was at least 20 mins later before we had to flagged him to take our order, and another 40 or 50 minutes before our food came. Though the waiter was polite, the time it took was just way too long. And no one came in all that time to update us on thr status. We had to, again, flag our waiter down to find out where or food are. The restaurant was packed, but to me that is not an excuse for this ridiculous wait time. I haven't been this excited about a new restaurant since forever. All I know is that the chef is from London and has Caribbean heritage. The food is bold, adventurous and packed with flavor. Our server described the linguine dish as the encompassing saltwater smell of the ocean as you walk towards it, and it was exactly that! But with a beautiful citrus note cutting through it. The signature peri-peri chicken was great, and both desserts were incredible. The bar absolutely matched the food in terms of flavor and balance. We loved the Sol y Playa and I Have a Martini Kink. Came for the Black History Month dinner--was severely underwhelmed by the experience. The menu lacked cohesion and the food was pretty bland. It took a long time for the plates to come out and there didn't seem to be any consideration for timing between each course. I don't think there was value for price paid. Staff consistently knocked over my purse without apology, though eventually someone did provide me a bag clip. If I came back I'd go for drinks in their downstairs bar, much better experience. read more

I found Markette on the Infatuation and was not led astray. We went to Markette for my boyfriend's birthday. I can tell they paid attention to my reservation note/request; they were super sweet and celebratory towards us. In the most common pictures for Markette, you will see the peri peri chicken, so naturally, I had to try that. It was delicious and the mini salad + wing served on the side was delectable. If you have a low tolerance for spice, I would advise trying something else, but it was good. My boyfriend got the lamb skewers with their home made pita which was phenomenal (we were told this was about to get rotated off the menu for other/new dishes.) We had the cod fritters as an appetizer, which was another crowd favorite that is a sure fire recommendation. I'm usually not huge on cod, but they were really tasty. We ordered the mango dessert, which was actually saltier than expected, but it was interesting to try. They put a candle in the dessert as well :) I would actually recommend trying the strawberry Swiss roll, I have heard amazing reviews about it and I think I'll have to go back to try it again! Drinks were delicious, I had the Sol y Playa which was balanced and deceptively strong. My boyfriend had the Hay Barbie and we split a Sunken Strawberry. These drinks are strong, so if you are a fellow lightweight, pace yourself! To top it all off, we were given mezcal martinis on the house as a send off for his birthday. I could not recommend this place enough. The restaurant is beautiful, the ambiance balances a classy air without being stiff, and the staff was very welcoming. For the experience we received, the prices were pretty reasonable as well. This place feels like a hidden gem due to its discreet signage, but it was packed by the time we left. Nice build out. But food was subpar. Too acidic. Chanterelle fettuccine was acidy from white wine that was actually unpleasant. Piripiri chicken was burned. Burnt skin on chicken was covered with hot sauce and white sauce. Skin had to be removed as charred taste from skin was offputting. My wife finished it. These are the dishes I can't stop thinking about: * Oxtail: This dish was life-changing. Must get. * Crudo: Often, crudo can feel like just a taste if you're sharing, but the portion here was more than substantial and the sauce is magical. * Grilled Prawn: Perfectly cooked with a crunchy kick from their incredible house-made chili crisp. I need this bottled at home. The prawn was cut into pieces so it is easy to eat. * Caviar and Duck Fat Frites: I'm not even a caviar fanatic, but these fries are delicious Even as someone who rarely drinks, I assumed the cocktails would be special considering the bar director's background. We tried the three cocktails from the "Tall & Crisp" section, and they absolutely delivered. He clearly has a talent for crafting perfectly balanced drinks. The food was unparalleled- the peri peri chicken was insanely good and I will continue to have dreams about the oxtail for months to come. Everything here from the ambience, service, and food deserves top marks! We started with a couple cocktails including the gin-based White Mirage which is a very loose spin on a Negroni and even better with less bitterness and more freshness. Being in a decadent mood, we followed with the royal sturgeon caviar which was accompanied by sour cream and the hottest, crispiest duck fat frites. Killer way to kick things off! We were going to have the Bibb salad but our server steered us to the roasted sunchokes for a more varied flavor profile and he nailed it. After that it was the peri peri chicken and the grilled lamb. While we needed a little more salt, both were super flavorful and totally delivered. The pita that came with the lamb was out of this world! There were three of us and we had more than enough food. Highly recommend this place.
