I'm sorry, but Marianne's is not it. By DC Central Kitchen, the organization provides on-the-job training and a hospitality apprenticeship to youth and adults that are facing obstacles to employment and housing - such a great mission! This eatery is located on the 1st floor of the MLK Jr. Memorial Library, and they offer a menu that offers various beverages, pastries, breakfast, snacks and sides, salads, and sandwiches, along with featured specials (when I went, they had Chicken Taco Salad and a Fresh Summer Salad). I had a pre-order of: +the Jerk Chicken Sandwich - a brioche bun filled with jerk chicken, with side cups of Caribbean slaw and jerk sauce; the bun seemed more of like a wheat bun, as it was definitely not fluffy, light, or buttery, but more on the dry side; the chicken 'strips' that the bun contained had no flavor nor sauce; the jerk sauce that was on the side didn't help, and it was of a thin consistency; the Caribbean slaw was red cabbage-focused, but hardly any flavors nor seasonings; it also didn't seem to be pickled long enough +chips and a canned soda The sandwich itself was just below average; the chicken itself was just super dried out, almost to the point of jerky consistency. The staff just chooses the flavor of the chips for you, but you can kindly request them to swap out for the one you actually wanted. Canned soda is not that cold, so ask for a cup of ice. Staff were fine, but they seemed extremely overwhelmed; there was a lack of communication, and orders were being mixed up, gone missing, offered to other patrons, etc. There's some tables and counter seating available, but during the lunch rush, it does become filled quickly. I'm glad I gave Marianne's a try, but definitely would not return. +dried-out sandwiches +unorganized staff +seating available +located on the 1st floor of the MLK Jr. Memorial Library +metered street and garage parking available

I'm going to give Marianne's a holler because they were a perfect way for me to start my trip in DC. Not too far from where I'm staying, they offer shockingly affordable prices for coffee and breakfast items. I had an 8oz black coffee and a egg and cheese croissant and spent a total of $4. WHAT! Unheard of! But all solid, basic, necessary. Located inside the MLK public library, make sure to support Marianne's. I'm a fan!!! I support you all. Thank you for greeting me (a visitor) with a smile and steaming hot food and coffee.

The name Marianne is in honor of the woman who trained many hospitality workers under an apprenticeship program! I love the name :). The cafe is in the right atrium as you walk into the MLK Library, and is a small, inexpensive cafe (coffee is $1), with foods provided by the DC Central Kitchen. This cafe employs people under an apprenticeship program in hospitality. I ordered a cesar salad with grilled chicken. It was a fairly simple salad, but solid for only $8. A quaint place with a powerful mission of empowering our youth communities. I will continue to support this cafe :)

This is a great addition to the central library! They have very fair priced food and drinks, especially for the area.

Most recently went as a party of 4 and got the crab beignets, beef arepa, masa gnocci, and parillada for two. Crab beignets were our favorite - perfectly crispy and great flavor. Masa gnocci was a little overcooked this time but still yummy. Beef arepa is a classic dish to get at the royal; two people can easily share one arepa. Parillada was a hearty entree and probably best for 2-3 people. This amount of food altogether was just nice. We probably could have ordered one more thing to be extra full. I don't typically get Latin American food but love all the flavors at this restaurant. Next time will try their breakfast menu!

It had a beautiful chew with the classic burger toppings with an amazing pairing of their slaw with a garlicy aioli. The bun was very pillowy and soft with a nice crust. They also never lack on their specialty lattes. I got their carrot cake latte and it was just so fabulous. Extremely smooth espresso and perfectly steamed milk. Syrups made in house of course and you can tell. Just a perfect latte. I usually am an iced latte person but I recommend getting their lattes hot. Hits different.

The ivy wrapping the entire exterior of the building is stunning -- it feels like the cafe grew right out of the earth itself. The garden is lush, intentional, and beautiful, and the grapevine patio pulls you in like you've stumbled onto a secret courtyard in the middle of the city. I rode the metro over an hour from Alexandria for this and the exterior alone told me the commute was worth it. The iced coffee delivered. The vibe inside is warm, neighborhood-cozy, and full of character. This place has a soul that most coffee shops spend years trying to manufacture. Four stars instead of five -- and here's my honest feedback with love. The outdoor seating is gorgeous but the trees overhead drop baby spiders constantly. I watched them land on my table, my drink, and my arm more times than I could count. The birds hopping onto tables scavenging for crumbs added to the chaos. For a patio this beautiful, the experience deserves better. The fix is already in the DNA of this place. Weaving lavender, peppermint, chrysanthemums, citronella grass, marigolds, and rosemary throughout the patio would naturally deter spiders and mosquitoes while making the garden even more breathtaking. The fragrance would become part of the experience. Big Bear Cafe is already special. The ivy, the garden, the coffee, the community energy -- it all works. A few intentional additions to the patio and this place is untouchable. I will absolutely be back.

Unlike most other coffee shops, they also have full service for folks who are dining in, so you can order from the QR code on your table instead of at the counter, and they'll bring your order out to you. I visited Bluestone around 4 PM in the afternoon, so it was a bit too late for coffee, but I love that they offer a wide selection of non-coffee drinks. I got their golden latte, which includes turmeric, almond milk, and a few other spices; it feels warm (both literally and figuratively) and is a lovely caffeine-free drink that helps me feel healthy as the weather gets colder. And to counterbalance any potential health benefits I might have gotten from the golden latte, I also got their chocolate chip cookie, which was massive -- almost the size of the plate they served it on. It was a solid cookie, slightly chewy but with a nice crust, although it was a bit lacking in chocolate chips. Bluestone is undoubtedly a rather pricey cafe, but I do love how quiet it is, so I'm sure I'll be making another visit the next time I need to be super productive.

Ok...They claim to be coffee roasters, but the baristas were not knowledgeable. I was excited to see they offer POUR OVER brewed coffee. I asked what beans they offer, and was told: light, medium and dark. I was expecting single origin options. I asked if they had any single origin beans. Again, I was told, yes, light, medium or dark. I clarified again and asked, do you have Ethiopian Yirgacheffe. He said, yes, that is our medium roast. I really had to pull out this important information. I ordered and he didn't brew it properly. He kept taking long breaks, letting water empty out causing beans to cool below proper extraction temperature. The coffee didn't taste like freshly roasted pour over. It was a big disappointment. We dined in and waited a half hour to get our food and coffee. I ordered the CROISSANT SANDWHICH with eggs, bacon and avocado. It was tasty but very messy and I had to eat with fork and knife. It should be served open face My daughter ordered the FRITTATA WITH ZUCCHINI. She opted for egg white version. It was HUGE! You can easily share this. However it was bland and not very tasty. This was a very expensive breakfast. I had expected much better quality food and coffee for the money. Service was awful. It is quick if you order drip coffee and a premade pastry. Expect to wait if you select made-to-order items.
