We came here for happy hour. There is a bar downstairs and upstairs where they have it. The place interior is beautiful. There's an upstairs patio as well. The staff was great and fast. We ordered pretty much all of the drinks and food items. Everything was good. Our total bill was $295 which is a lot for $8 cocktails and $13 and under appetizers. They participate in the InKind app which means with a referral code you get $25 off. The app allows to split the bill. Great value, great atmosphere and amazing food and drinks.

We came here on a Friday night prior to a concert at the Black Cat. I regret not being dressed nicer as this is definitely a higher-end restaurant. That said, we didn't feel unwelcome. They have a happy hour available at the upstairs bar, but their draft taps were broken so we opted to get a seat in the main room upstairs. The waitress was friendly and helped us decide what to order. They are a tapas-style eatery, and the menu has a lot of options for the omnivore and vegetarian alike (not many vegan items). We ordered 5 plates for the two of us and finished everything without feeling gross. The best of the meal was definitely the falafel which was hot and crispy. We also loved the cauliflower. There was so much labneh that I regret not asking for more bread. Would eat here again. Great date night spot.

What a vibey little place! We stopped in here for a later night catch up, and loved the food and atmosphere. The servers checked up on us often, and kept our water refilled without being bothersome. Taking away one star because the prices of the cocktails are a bit astronomical at $18 each for what they offer. I thought the menu selection was fairly good with the typical tapas selection and fair food prices for what we got.

Great spot for late night eats. I went on a weekend with no reservation and was only about a 10 min wait. The restaurant was definitely busy that night, but noise levels were still at a very comfortable conversation level. Our server was awesome and made some great recommendations and everything came out perfect in my opinion. This definitely is a spot I would recommend to friends and come back to visit myself.

OMG!!! I'm already thinking about the next time I'm coming here. The restaurant is really beautifully decorated, clean and esthetically pleasing. The service that we received from Minyae was phenomenal! She took wonderful care of us and offered great recommendations. She also paid very special attention to my nut allergy and made sure I was safe with our food choices. Now, I think I'll be dreaming about this food until next time. It was so delicious! The mussels and the broccolini were the stars of the show, but everything was so delicious. I'm not sure what seasoning that is they put on the pita bread...10/10!!! Also, the Gypsy Dragon cocktail was very tasty. I would highly recommend this place and will definitely be back soon.

Went to the HH between 4-7pm, got Tegroni's as drinks and couldn't complain about any of the food or drinks here! Would highly recommend coming, HH is at the bar seating both floors, upstairs was more crowded smaller bar seating availability but cute ambiance. Will be back!

Nice restaurant, he liked the name. I loved that it was Mediterranean cuisine! The boho gypsy decor was cute. The water was so delicious! The server was nice. The food was amazing. My lamb was falling off the bone! Go, enjoy!!

Hands down Gypsy kitchen is some of the best middle eastern food I've had in DC. Their take on any classic middle eastern dish is next level. They have somehow mastered the art of blending traditional flavors with additional ingredients in a way that I've tasted no where else. Also, their servers are very friendly and know the menu like the back of their hands. This is a must eat spot in DC!

I went on a double date on Valentine's eve. The restaurant was packed. We were seated upstairs. It was chilly inside. The servicer was attentive. We ordered a variety of different dishes. All were tasty. I only remembered to take a pic of my dish when the desserts came out. I enjoyed the dishes but they are pricey.

The food was very good. The small plates were enough to fill two tummies! The service was on point. He was checking with us at every turn of service. It is a great place to gather for visitors and home town people alike. The bar set up was pretty cool.

The food was so tasty. Every dish was packed with so much flavor. The croquettes were so very crispy and creamy on the inside. The muscles were also very juicy and the sauce had the perfect addition of andouille sausage. I'm not usually a huge fan of hummus but it was also very tasty and citrusy with the addition of the dill and lemon juice. The team was so nice and accommodating, and still allowed accommodated our reservation even though we were late. I also loved the modern vibe of the restaurant.

Back but to knock a star off, unfortunately. I've been back twice since (highly recommend the happy hour) but today's visit for brunch was not the best. We were one of the only tables in there but our waiter rarely came by. We needed things multiple times and would be searching for him. We even mentioned maybe getting drinks or additional dishes but ended up not since he was rarely around. Lastly, we had a party of six and were charged a large party auto gratuity. I have no issue tipping 20%, I typically tip extra especially if service is great since I've worked in the industry myself, but on a party of six I found this peculiar. Overall, was just super unimpressed with this brunch experience. But leaving four stars because the food here in general is worth trying.

This place will get you hooked! Their Mediterranean dishes are top notch, I am obsessed with their grilled branzino and their burnt cheesecake! We've celebrated a few especial occasions here and we always leave feeling happy. Servers are wonderful and the place itself is beautiful. My one recommendation would be to make a reservation ahead of time because every time we've visited it's been quite packed.

Are reservations required? would someone looking to come on a wednesday at 4 need to reserve a table or can we walk in?

I'll be in DC April 22-25th for a quick Spring break trip with 17 year old daughter + friend. It looks amazing for me but will a 17 year old appreciate the menu? If you think so, how can I book the rooftop for an ultimate experience?…

Depends on your daughter. If she likes Mediterranean food she should like it.

What's the price for one persons standard meal?

The average price per person, depending on drinks, is between $35-$45.

    Is this a nut-free restaurant?

No, we are not. However, we do offer nut free menu options, and we can modify certain dish to be nut free.

Can you accommodate large parties with separate checks?

The short answer is Yes! We have an app, Sunday, where you can divide up your bill among your guest however you see fit. Nothing to download or signup for, just the ability to create as many separate checks as you need.

Can I order a tasting menu to experience a variety of dishes?

Verlaine: Although we do not have a specific tasting menu, we can create a special menu to meet your request. Please feel free to contact me directly to discuss options.… Read more

    Is there a parking garage?

    Street parking but no garage

    Do they have bottomless mimosas?

No, I didn't see anything of the shirt in their menu when I went.

How do u go to the rooftop? Stairs or elevator?

There are stairs leading to the second floor and then the rooftop. You'll see the upon entry into the restaurant.

    Are they checking vax cards?

    Yes!

Is there covered outdoor seating and can you reserve outdoor seating?

Yes there is a covered patio I sat in on the second floor. I didn't reserve but the hostess asked if I wanted to sit outside.

    Do they serve gluten-free options?

Yes, plenty! Lots of veggie and meats, and the restaurant will try to accommodate as best as they can.

Are pets allowed on the patio?

    No pets allowed

    Do they allow dogs?

    I don't believe so

    Is it halal?

I wouldn't think so, given that they serve pork.

I see some saying they went with family- would you say this place is kid friendly?

Its really according to what the kids eat. The food is a little rich. I haven't seen that many children anytime I've been.

Is dining available since its pandemic?

Indoor dining is available with limited capacity.

It is typical of Spanish flavors, heavily relying on high-end cured meats and cheeses, and classics such as croquetas. There is something very special that goes into tapas because its suppose to satisfy you based on good taste over quantity. Large shrimp in a generous skillet of olive oil and slow cooked garlic slices and a iberico mac and cheese are some examples of how they elevate classics we are familiar with. We really liked that they learned into garlic and spice. We found dried Aji Caballero in our meal, great attention to source country. They have a very robust and generous drinks menu. Loved watching others not dining alone and embracing that share quality of the menu design. Perhaps it is not the best tapas I had, I would have liked to see a balance with lighter citrus flavors but maybe that was an ordering issue. At some point, since the menu heavily leans towards rich and decadent, its better to plan around that. Our waitress was amazing, she explained the questions we had on the ingredients and was on it with the refills.

Hot toddy - waiter recommended, it's hot and has honey lemon taste like a tea but the alcohol is also a bit strong 2/5 Pineapple margarita - very very strong almost like straight alcohol lol 1/5 Red sangria - super well balanced and fruity! A little spicy, overall good quality but I do think they put a bit too much oil which made it have an extra oil taste 2.5/5 Middle - like prosciutto this is the best one! Not dry at all in any area and not too salty 3.75/5 Right - least favorite but it is still good overall. Taste a little less yummy than the one on the right even though the one on the right is too oily 2/5 Queso Mahon - rich and cheesy. Not too sticky and very soft. I like the little fruit it comes with too 3/5 Seared scallop - usually squid in rice I feel like is just color but this one was super savory and delicious with a unique taste too that I'm thinking must be from the ink! It's made super well and the crispy sear on the scallop adds so much flavor but also the scallop was not overcooked at all, super bouncy and tender. 4.5/5 Spanish risotto - very moist and yummy! Even though it's just vegetables it's made well 3.75/5 Crispy pork belly - falls apart and very tender. Not dry at all! Unfortunately too salty though. Also very heavy. Meat too salty but veggies it came with like potato that soaks up the flavor was like inedible too salty 2/5 Seafood paella - I think it came out a bit faster than 40 minutes but I didn't keep track. Large serving size! Wish there was more seafood but lots of rice! Very moist and flavorful rice, seafood flavor comes through too! Wish they cooked it longer though since bottom is not crispy at all. Shrimp is overcooked unfortunately but individually seasoned. All the squids and octopus don't have much flavor but cooked well and not chewy at all. Mussels were good too but had some weird webbing on some pieces that made me not want to eat it and size is a bit small. Needs more seafood to balance the rice amount 4.25/5 Crimini mushroom - weird with the poached egg especially since there's a bunch of mushroom liquid below that I think would mix weirdly together. But ignoring that, the mushrooms themselves were very flavorful and actually taste really great with paella! 3.75/5 Basque cheesecake - very heavy and dense. Jam is not too sweet which is nice 1.5/5 Churros - very airy and light inside! The fried part is more than double the inside though so wish that was a little less thick so it can be a little less oily but still overall light. Came very warm and the dipping sauces were very liquidy. Chocolate is on the darker side which is a nice match 3/5

Our server was really knowledgeable and friendly. As for the food , unfortunately, i didn't have anything that blew me away. My mini hamburger/Ibérico de bellota mini hamburguesa was actually my favorite item. Very juicy and flavorful. Though $13.00 for one slider was a bit much. My least favorite was the rabbit confit with apricot puree/Conejo en salmorejo con puré de albaricoques. I was excited about this because I can't recall the last time I've ever had rabbit but I think it was the texture of the puree that took away from the dish. Coming in at the middle was the seafood paella. I know it's one of the restaurants headlining menu items but I found the seasoning inconsistent. The rice seemed a bit salty and the shrimp was pretty bland. Combining it to balance it out didn't yield the flavor I was hoping for. Weirdly enough, if I went back and the table ordered it again, I definitely wouldn't mind but probably wouldn't get it myself unless my companions were interested. All in all, I'm not opposed to trying other items on the menu should I know anyone who would like to visit though I can't say it hooked me enough for me to go on my own accord

Completely not cool as to how they treat those who try to patronize their business. Note to management: we understand your establishment has great reviews but please don't take that for granted. Please train your staff to treat every single guest regardless of party size with respect, professionalism, and hospitality. Not mad about not being able to dine here because y'all were "fully booked" but more disappointed with how your outdoor and indoor hosts handled the messaging. P.S. There were plenty of tables left unoccupied for "7:30pm reservations" but it was already 8:00pm -- so I take it the grace period for reservations is 30+ minutes?!

I made a reservation with a friend this past Monday for dinner, and we had a great time! The food came out quickly and the servers were attentive. CEBICHE CLÁSICO - 26 This was a very refreshing cerviche that was topped with sweet potatoes, cancha ("corn nuts"), choclo (Peruvian corn), pickled red onions, and this seaweed/algae topping. It was quite citrusy, which paired well with the very fresh fish. The toppings added more crunch and crisp, along with some natural "sweetness" that each of them have. PAPAS DE HUANCAYO - 15 The potatoes were topped generously with aji amarillo (creamy sauce made with yellow chili peppers), queso fresco, and two halves of a quail? egg. Wow, this was so delicious. I simply loved the aji amarillo, which was so savory with a slight spice to it. The queso fresco added extra cheesy-creaminess. This was my favorite out of all the things we tried. I was thinking about the papas de huancayo even two days later. ANTICUCHERIA + corazon de res - 9 + chicken thigh - 9 These are charcoal-grilled skewers marinated with cumin, chicha de jora, oregano, soy sauce, red wine vinegar, and aji panca. I usually imagine skewers to be on the dryer side, but these were incredibly saucy. There was a bit of heat in the midst of all the spices, along with a nice acidic tang. Lots of flavors happening all at once! I enjoyed the texture of the beef heart, which almost reminded me of the crunch of chicken liver. The chicken thighs were tender and delicious. LOMO SALTADO - 34 Large plating, but it was emptier than it appeared to be. There wasn't much jasmine rice, which was perfect for the both of us. A few pieces of wagyu beef, which was tender, but underwhelming for wagyu. The potatoes soaked up the savory, soy-based sauce well, and the tomatoes were juicy. Overall, pretty solid entree, but I'd like to try something else next time. UNGURAHUL AÇAÍ - 15 We wanted to end our meal with something sweet, but refreshing. And what's more refreshing than an acai bowl? This was topped with a variety of fruits, some I've never had before. Good amount of granola (made of amaranth and quinoa?) that provided a satisfying crunch. The acai itself was almost like a paste. The bowl itself was cold and refreshing, but a bit too sweet. Overall, the flavors of each dish we got were explosive and unique. I did think it leaned slightly too salty. I would love to come back again to try more items along with their tasting menu at Causa!

We made a reservation for the rooftop patio, which had a beautiful view of the surrounding brick buildings. The space felt lush and vibrant, filled with greenery and natural sunlight. Our table had a lamp that unfortunately did not work, but overall the ambiance was still lovely. Our server was incredibly attentive and offered great recommendations. The appetizers arrived at a good pace, though our entrée took longer than expected. *Classic Punch: the only cocktail served in a pitcher format, which yielded about five to six glasses. Our server highlighted their in house aged liquor, and it showed in how smooth the drink was. It had a clean profile with a natural balance of tartness and sweetness from the pineapple. Very refreshing and easy to keep drinking. *Corazón De Res: one of the best skewers I have had. The beef hearts were well seasoned with ají panca and cumin, with a deep, developed flavor and great texture. The huacatay aioli and rocoto sauce added layers of creaminess, acidity, and heat. Easily the most well rounded dish. *Papas De Huancaína: a chilled potato dish with an interesting concept. The standout element was the soft quail egg on top. The potatoes themselves were cooked through but still slightly firm. The ají amarillo sauce overwhelmed the dish, and there were not enough potatoes to balance its sweet and tangy intensity. This would have improved with either less sauce or more potatoes. *Seasonal Cebiche: the daily special featured Hokkaido scallops. The scallops were tender and naturally sweet, complemented by the acidity of the marinade. Toppings included seaweed, cancha, choclo, red onion, and sweet potato, offering a variety of textures. The seaweed and choclo added chewiness, while the thinly sliced red onion could have been more generous for added sharpness. The sweet potato was especially memorable for its sweetness. The cancha added crunch, though it felt slightly overused compared to the other toppings. *Cebiche Amazónico: recommended by our server for a spicier, creamier profile. The white fish was tender and took on the marinade well. This version leaned more acidic, with the sauce standing out more than the fish itself. The toppings were similar to the seasonal cebiche but included plantain chips. The chips felt redundant alongside the cancha and would have worked better as a separate side. *Pulpo Al Olivo: the octopus itself was very well cooked, tender with a natural sweetness. Unfortunately, the botija olive sauce was overly thick and heavy, and there was far too much of it for the portion of octopus. The strong tang completely overpowered the dish. *Mafalde: the house made pasta had a nice chew and a beautiful shape. The wagyu beef cheek was tender and generously portioned. However, there was a noticeable gaminess that the tomato ragù did not fully mask. The sauce was cooked down but needed more seasoning and depth. *Chazuta: a surprisingly expensive dessert for its size and subtle flavor. The macambo added a pleasant crunch, but the matcha center was very mild, making the dish feel one note. The passionfruit droplets were bright and flavorful, though too sparse to tie everything together. An underwhelming finish. The cebiches, skewers, and drinks were the highlights and truly impressive. The rest of the dishes fell short in flavor, especially when considering the price point. The 20 percent automatic gratuity felt justified given the quality of service, but if I were to return, I would focus on the smaller plates. Overall, this felt like a three and a half star experience, rounded up slightly due to the ambiance and service.

I chose Ambar for my group, and I'm very pleased with our selection. Food Most of our group had dietary restrictions. Several of us were gluten free, and one person was both nut and seafood free. Ambar did an excellent job curating a menu that worked for everyone without making anyone feel like an afterthought. We opted for the Chef's Table experience, which included a spread tasting with veggie sticks and a variety of dishes that were clearly labeled and thoughtfully prepared: * Bean hummus - GF / DF / NF * Ajvar - GF / DF / NF * Balkan salad - GF / DF / NF (one prepared without feta cheese) * Baby carrots - GF / DF / NF (one prepared without tofu sauce) * Roasted peppers - GF / DF / NF * Cauliflower - GF / DF / NF * Baked beans - GF / DF / NF * Roasted lamb - GF / DF / NF * Stuffed pork belly "Sarma" - GF / DF / NF * Brussels sprouts - GF / DF / NF (one prepared without yogurt and bacon) * Seafood platter Everything was flavorful, well-seasoned, and beautifully presented. The meal was so delicious that I didn't even manage to get photos of everything, which rarely happens for me. Just know we dined very well and left completely satisfied. Service The staff was wonderful from start to finish. From the event team member who served as our account manager, to the chef, to the servers and wait staff, everyone was attentive and accommodating. They handled our dietary needs with care and professionalism and made sure our group felt taken care of throughout the evening. Pricing We paid a set fee that we were able to negotiate, and the final rate wasn't too bad for a group experience like this. Just keep in mind that there is an admin fee, a 20% gratuity, and taxes added on top, so be sure to factor that into your planning if you're booking a group event. Overall, I'd absolutely recommend Ambar for group dining, especially if you have guests with dietary restrictions. They made coordination easy, delivered great food, and created a memorable dining experience for our team.

Not sure I would return; I would definitely return if someone else was paying (e.g., corporate expense account). We reserved for dinner on a winter Saturday night. We found street parking and walked over. The restaurant is inside the Waldorf Astoria hotel, formerly the Trump hotel, formerly the Old Post Office. Finding the entrance was annoying and challenging. The entrance is from Pennsylvania Avenue a half-block east of 12th Street NW, between 11-12th streets. It's a small driveway leading to the actual hotel entrance and a reception hall. Wish we had known. Upon entering the hotel, the architecture strikes you. Soaring atrium that soars up 10 or so stories. Festive, beautiful, striking. The restaurant takes up the entire left side of the lobby. The restaurant has a lower and upper level. We were seated on the lower level, behind the reception desk. That was a bit annoying but did not detract from our evening. The good part was the view of the lobby which definitely enhanced our experience. Had we been seated in the upper level, there were no tables remaining on the outer veranda with the view, so we would have been seated in an interior area with no view up. So we were fine. Extensive menu with signature cocktails and a lovely wine list. Limited number of by-the-glass wines (as is expected), maybe 20 wines total which is not bad. We both had margaritas with salt foam which were delicious and original. I also enjoyed a fino sherry pre-dinner, outstanding. With our meal we both had Rioja red wines which were excellent. The food choices are too many to list. They offer two tasting menus which look amazing. We are pescatarians and so we could not order the tasting menus, we could eat maybe 1/3 of the items offered. If I was a meat eater there is no question I'd do the tasting menu. The server suggested 6-10 dishes for two people, these are small taste plates, with any item being 1-3 bites. So small. Some of the items we ordered: mini Waldorf salads served in small chervil leaves Ceviche served in a dragon fruit (cobia, cherry hibiscus air, pecans, avocado) Neptunes pillows, which is spicy tuna on airbread (sesame rocoto, spicy tuna, fresh wasabi) Pau Gasol Potatoes, which is a tube of potato with caviar (fried potatoes, labneh, cured egg yolk, Ossetra caviar) Brussels sprouts with foam (lemon pith puree, apricots, green grapes and apples, lemon air) Honey miso eggplant, the winner of the evening for me. honey-miso glaze, masago pearls, preserved lemon, pine nuts, sesame Salmon cooked in a parchment-like thing, super flavorful Ora King "en Papillote" Ora King Salmon, sauce alcaparrado, crispy quinoa Japanese peaches and burrata. Every item was good. The brussels sprouts were tender and not what I expected and were ok in my opinion, these were the only item that I would not order again. The ceviche, Neptune pillows, Pau Gasol potatoes, and honey miso eggplant were truly outstanding. We also had coffee with our dessert, basque cheesecake, which was outstanding. Our server was outstanding and added to our evening. Responsive, caring, smart, highly enjoyable. When the evening ended, the total bill (including an automatic 20% service fee which seems fair) was $379. We turned toward each other and said, "How did the two of us just eat $400 worth of food?" We don't feel we went overboard at all on food or drink, so this is pretty darn pricey. As wonderful as the food and service and location are, that's a heck of a lot of money so the value is questionable. Ratings: Service and Atmosphere 5, Food 4, Value 3.

I started with Ben Frank's Milk Punch and it was really good. I couldn't taste much alcohol, but I think that's intentional compared to versions I've had at other places. The onion soup was interesting. I seemed to misread the "cappuccino" element. It definitely tasted like onion soup, but it wasn't very hot. The presentation also threw me off -- drinking it made my mind expect a dessert rather than a savory dish. The Cotton Candy Foie Gras was exactly why I came. It's a fun appetizer and I loved the balance between the cotton candy, foie gras, and corn nuts. You're supposed to shove it all into your mouth and eat it in one bite, which adds to the experience. The Tortilla de Patatas "New Way" was also delicious. I liked the contrast between the crispness and the creaminess of the sauce. It also came out super hot, which is how I prefer it. I didn't get to order more since it was meant to be drinks and apps, but based on what I tried, I wouldn't be surprised if the other items were just as delicious. Service was ok, they checked in with me but not enough for refill. Ambiance was luxurious which was a nice experience.

The pita was so delicious and we kept dipping it in the complimentary olive oil with black olive tapenade.
