Perfectly seasoned fluffy eggs, crisp turkey bacon, all sandwiched between croissant so buttery and delicate, it almost disintegrates. The item that brings it all together is the harissa mayonnaise. Great new place for breakfast or lunch. It can be tricky to get a table here during busy hours. They have a water pitcher and hummus and a type of crab salad for you to sample while waiting for your order to be prepared. There are a few long tables indoors with communal seating, and some other regular tables as well, but very limited outdoor seating. Everything we ordered was so fresh and delicious!!! Walked in here 15 minutes before closing and felt super bad about that coming from a service industry family. However, to my surprise the employees were super friendly. Casey took our order at the register and was very sweet + helpful. We ordered a variety of things from lemon Bundt cake, schnitzel, chicken shawarma tacos, vegan blueberry pie and challah bread. I've been trying to support Marcel throughout this ordeal, find their staff very friendly and helpful, but have had some WTF moments with them. About a month ago, ordered a coffee strawberry smoothie thing that cost NINE DOLLARS, and turned out to be a small-sized, watery, milk shake I could've bought for $4 at the diner and enjoyed much more. But today's experience really made me think twice. Saw the special "marinated steak sandwich," didn't notice price (FIFTEEN DOLLARS) When I ordered and was told, I was shocked but there were people behind me and so I completed the order, thinking, "this better be good!" No. The sandwich was on pita, overstuffed and sloppy, the steak itself chewy and tough. I'm embarrassed I even ordered it in the first place but more embarrassed this restaurant--overpriced to begin with--would dare ask such a price. I feel deeply for restaurant workers and owners, and have noted upward trending cost to consumers and some of that, I accept. But if you're going to gouge, make it worth our while. So very, very happy Marcel is now open late! If you have that craving for desert, and really good desert, pop on in! The deserts (all of them) are delicious and the selection is ever changing. As for the food, it gets a thumbs up too. The pizza is not your Italian grandma's pie; it is however the pizza your Greek grandmother would make. That's not a bad thing, it's just a tad different-especially the dough. Empanadas are delightful as well as the sandwiches. The one thing that sucks is the interior layout and seating. I was constantly bumping into people which meant I was constantly apologizing for what, the crappy layout? The uncomfortable chairs and strangely heighted (I know that's not a word) seem all too familiar, but in a bad way: think Ikea. Oh well. Glad they are here, food is great, tables and chairs,not so much but hey, isn't it all about the food anyway? As a Montclair native, I am often skeptical of new restaurants and boutiques that have popped up to replace old classics, but I must admit that I was exceptionally impressed by the menu offerings at Marcel Bakery & Kitchen. I went today for a business lunch and ordered the Vegan Dream sandwich. The softness of the pita bread is what first caught my attention about the dish. It was warm and so fluffy, having that airy quality that only fresh baked bread can possess. Best pita I've ever had. It was stuffed with grilled portobello and tofu in pesto sauce which were juicy but not soggy. To top it all off I added the in house made hot sauce (requested it from the counter) which was absolutely dynamite. It was a thick paste with a gorgeous orange brick color and strong taste of red pepper. I would buy it by the bottle if given the chance. The culmination of the experience was meeting the head chef, who was behind the counter. I told him I loved the bread and that I was hard to impress because I worked as a baker to put myself through college. He immediately offered me samples of some of the delectable pastries in the front display. I had a little piece of the rose water cake, the chocolate hazelnut filled cake and the brioche. Holy flakey, tender, supple, buttery Jesus these treats were delightful. I could not possibly do them justice in a single post but long story short, Marcel Bakery and Kitchen gets my local stamp of approval. That being said I still got to the front of the line within 5 minutes and the cashier was so hopeful in helping me figure out what I should get. I got the mamas chicken ...so freaken good!!! It was so tasty, the chicken was so juicy, and the sauce they used was perfect and not excessively used. My coworker got the pesto pizza....just as amazing. I will be back once a week. Definitely has potential. Grabbed take out for lunch. Ordered the Turkey & Brie Sandwich. The bread did not seem super fresh, however, the turkey was perfect. Also ordered the Mushroom and Ricotta Pizza. The mushrooms were really good. Was disappointed in over all flavor. Didn't feel either dish has me running back for more. The place was super crowded and it was tough maneuvering around the large counter in the middle. They also did not have any paper menus. The counter where you order is small. The brownie and blueberry scone were average but my brownies come out better and not as expensive. I was surprised on how much everything cost.
