Hummus chicken shwarma
Kimberly G.

Almost forgot how much I enjoy this little place! Food was delicious and staff was friendly. I love how cute and casual the feel is. The pastries look amazing and the ones I've tried have never disappointed. I ordered a chicken shawarma bowl and my husband had the steak bowl with rice. The portions are huge and we had enough for leftovers!

Review for take out only! You guys. If you're looking for excellent quality and consistently great food, this is your spot! I dont love Mediterranean but decided to pick up to go weeks ago and am so so glad I did!! I've picked up almost weekly since I crave it - we love the chicken shawarma, hummus (the pita chips are insane, so good!) the honey chicken sandwich and za'atar fries. The food is really exceptional packed with lots of flavor! Easy to order online for pick up too and they wrap everything so nicely! I love love this spot!!! Glad to support!!!

Marcel is the best place to go for breakfast/ brunch/ lunch in the Montclair area. The Cappuccinos are amazing, and you can't go wrong with ordering anything on the menu. I've tried the shakshuka and the challah French toast, and both experiences were unreal. The staff is very welcoming and accommodating. 10/10 experience.

Great place! It was my second time here and my friend and I really enjoyed the food. Service was quick. It wasn't very crowded in the morning and there was plenty of space. I had the mushroom and feta omelette which was delicious. Loved the pita that came with it!

Chicken Shawarma Dinner

Called in my dinner order of chicken Shawarma plate. I wanted extra onions. No problem, it'll be ready in 20 minutes. My food was ready when I arrived. I had to grab pita chips and hummus. My Shawarma was salty. I've eaten here before and this was a first. My next visit, I'm getting my go to salad and Chicken Schnitzel. Paid street parking Small dining area.

This cute bakery/restaurant had delicious breakfast/lunch food! The fries were crispy and paired with a great sauce. The chicken shawarma pita was also packed with flavor but I felt that there wasn't a good balance of chicken and pickles/veggies. The chicken was packed at the top but and the rest was packed at the bottom so you're not rly able to get a good bite of the mix. I would definitely go back and try other things. I heard great things about the French toast. I also got the focaccia to go and it had great texture and savory flavor. The people serving were also so kind!

Israeli Breakfast

Delicious restaurant in the heart of upper montclair. I love their Israeli breakfast. I've also wanted to try the shashuka but I like the Israeli breakfast so much that I normally get that. Fresh ingredients. Nice staff. Give this place a try!

So I just stopped in tonight and realized that I never posted from my first visit! I love it at Marcel! It's inviting, delicious and reliable!! Tonight, I ordered the curried tofu over rice. AMAZING. So much so that I missed taking the picture, haha. I will DEFINITELY be returning time and time again!

We have visited Marcel for a Sunday Brunch. We are impressed with friendly, super convenient service, and a DELICIOUS Food. Everything we had was top notch. Definitely a place to make it a routine brunch outing for us. Well done!

Shakshuka Mishmish Classic

This place is added to my Montclair brunch/lunch list. The shakshuka mish mish was just as good as I remember from Mish Mish. Subtly spicy, robustly flavorful tomato sauce with flourishes of addicting za'atar. A fresh, tender pita comes with it. I wish the poached eggs were a bit less done but overall my meal was solid. The downside is the size of the place and its popularity. There's only 5-6 tables inside and 4 outside, which left me waiting for 30 minutes. The drill is: order at the register and then sit. They'll call your name and walk your order over. I recommend grabbing a paper menu from up front bc it's not displayed anywhere. Seasonal specials are on the chalkboard behind the doors that open to the place. To avoid paying for parking drive 1 block away from the train station. Stop at Vesta for some chocolate and pick up some cheese at Van Hook on your way out.

Chicken Schnitzel in Pita Sandwich

It's been a while since I've made a Yelp review. I'm happy this review of Marcel's Bakery & Kitchen is my first in quite some time. First, I've driven by this gem of a place a thousand times and had no idea what I was missing. I decided to meet up with a friend at a local spot in Montclair. Naturally, I suggested Starbucks but she suggested and preferred Marcel's. I had no objection. I love to try new places, especially in Montclair. I arrived on time at a non-peak time - 4:30ish. Immediately I looked around and took in their ambiance. It was extremely clean, and bright yet had a cozy and warm feel to it. (Perhaps it was the delish-looking pastries that gave it that warm touch) I glanced over to my right as soon as I walked in, to their grab-and-go options. There were plenty of incredibly healthy options to choose from. (I was so happy to see that). However, I couldn't make a decision. I wanted to taste everything!! (It didn't help that I was famished. I opted for their special - Chicken Schnitzel in the best darn warm pita I've ever had, and a side of field greens w/a hint of lemon dressing (it was perfect). It's been a few years since I've ordered a Dirty Chai Latte and this was just what I needed. The gorgeous design was a sweet touch. My Friend had mint hot tea which smelled so delightful. We decided to sit outside since the fan was cooling us a bit much and we needed to warm up some. I spotted a book nook upon leaving and it brought a smile to my face. (I love books) I'm thinking of going back this weekend to donate the poetry book I just launched, to Marcel's, so they can add it to their collection of books on the shelves. They have a nice amount of seating outside. The evening was perfect to sit and enjoy the sunset and chat away. Customers sitting alongside us were friendly and the aroma of the food they ordered smelled incredible!!! My friend and I stayed until just about closing. The owner was super polite, waved goodbye, and bid us a great rest of our night. The employees were courteous and did not rush us out and offered us to stay longer until they were ready to bring the chairs in. I can't wait to go back and try the other items on the menu. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for healthy or vegan options, kind and courteous service, and no pressure place to just sit, relax and enjoy some quality catch up time with friends. 5 for me!

When we first arrived, we saw there was a line out the door. Luckily we had made a reservation. We still had to wait about 15 minutes but they had a small seating area which we used. The place was pretty and had an interesting design to it. We were seated at the back on a bigger table which they divided into half for another family. The worker there mentioned they could move us to another table once there was an availability but this was no issue for us so we stayed where we were. We got the BLT sandwich with sauteed onions, micki mouse shaped waffle, birria tacos and shashuska. We also got the chicken and steak empanadas and also strawberry mint lemonade and mint lemonade. The food was good. The Shashuska and Birria Tacos were tasty. The birria tacos however were VERY oily...the oil was dripping out! The BLT was ok - nothing special but nothing bad but the fries it came with seemed to not have been seasoned evenly (some were very salty and others lacked salt). Waffle was good - normal. We also had gotten the chicken and steak empanadas. The chicken empanadas were tasty and better than the steak one. The sauce the chicken empanadas came with was limey and tasty. The steak one was salty according to my friend. What we all loved the most were our drinks. We had gotten the freshly squeezed strawberry mint lemonade and the mint lemonade and wow - it was so tasty and refreshing left me wanting more! Overall, place was nice, and food was good.

This one pound mozzarella stick definitely fulfilled that criteria. It was so gigantic it was almost like getting a workout in just to lift it. The outside was heavily breaded with bread crumbs and the top was sprinkled with parmesan cheese and chopped scallions. Even the dipping cup was supersized to accommodate the diameter of the stick! Typically, I would have posted until after my I finished my oversized food compilation project. However, it's being posted early because The Brookdale is permanently closing its doors. The staff is fantastic, friendly, helpful, and genuinely welcoming, but the real star is the food. To start, we shared the Buttermilk Biscuit, Duck Fat Tater Tots, and the Beet & Citrus Salad. That salad... I'm still dreaming about it. The biscuit was equally delicious and will definitely be my go to from now on. The tater tots, while okay, lacked a bit of flavor. It did pair as well with the salad, but lone was lacking something. For the entree, I had the Breakfast Sandwich and also got a taste of the Brunch Tostada. Both were incredible, but the sandwich stole the show for me. The biscuit is absolutely top tier, and the chorizo sausage patty was perfectly spiced not too hot, just the right kick and paired beautifully with the rest of the sandwich. And the lattes? I wasn't sure if it opened as I didn't see anybody inside at first. Then we opened the door and stepped inside, and called out. We found the employee sitting behind the counter, but the counter was so big that it obstructed our view of knowing they were there. Upon looking around, they had a nice assortment of pastries and baked goods, along with wrapped sandwiches from earlier in the day. I spied the baked goods section and could not resist getting a chocolate chip cookie as we eyed their baked goods. We decided to share since I need to watch my calories during the holidays. I want to celebrate Christmas, and not look like Santa. The employee there made two lattes for us and asked if we would like her to heat the cookie. Yes, please and thank you! Upon sitting down, I noticed the big grease mark on the napkin, so it should be noted that their cookies are made with high butter content. The chocolate chip cookie, though generously chipped and served delightfully warm, fell a bit flat on flavor. Similarly, the latte, while hot and satisfying, was overwhelmingly milky, lacking the robust punch of a quality espresso. Here is how it ranked: Chocolate Chip cookie: 3.5/5 stars. Good texture, high butter content, but flat taste. Latte: 3.5/5 stars. Nice and hot, good alternative milk option, but too mild on espresso. This cafe is a perfectly pleasant spot for a moment of refuge and a hot cup of something, especially if you're not concerned with a full-bodied coffee experience or a truly exceptional baked good. If you're out and about needing to warm up, it does the trick.
