I can't say enough about our experience with Marathon Moving. From the estimate to the move, it was truly amazing. We had a local move into a storage unit while we transitioned into a rental house. The office communicated effectively and often to be sure we were ready and if we had questions. The crew showed up on time and got right to work. All the furniture was wrapped and covered in blankets while the boxes we packed were carefully moved into the truck. They moved everything into a storage unit and used every inch of space. It was so packed we couldn't close the door! But they stayed until everything was acceptable to me. The final bill was very close to the estimate and I was more than happy to pay for the extra blankets they used to protect the furniture. We were fortunate to have Juan Sanchez and his team from Marathon Moving as our movers in late November of 2023. They had a bit of a late start due to bad traffic, but once they arrived and surveyed the job to be done, they got right to it. Every piece of furniture and artwork was perfectly wrapped and safely moved from the house to the truck. The move crew was careless and damaged an very expensive custom 13' dining table, Knoll outside furniture, and my front entrace door and moldings. I filed 2 claims and they rejected them immediately. I should have chosen another move but didnt based on price. It was obviously a mistake and now an heirloom piece of furniture, and other really valuable pieces, are badly damaged. I would not recommend them. We've moved 5 times in the last 12 years and decided to try a larger agent. We chose Allied who was serviced in our area by Marathon Moving. Their quote was almost double the next best company we trusted, however, given Allied's reputation and the services that were promised, we decided to give them a shot. While getting a quote Marathon was quite pleasant with them being very helpful in that stage. One of the major reasons we chose to use them over other movers because they promised to "Pad & protect your home including floors - walls - door jambs - etc.;" We were selling our house about a week after the move, so keeping everything in great shape was a priority. The day of the move they arrived about an hour later than the window they promised. They then started packing/loading without protecting the house at all. I asked about this and the crew manager said he had no idea what I was talking about. I then attempted to reach the two people at Marathon I had previously spoken to. I tried both their cells and office numbers and couldn't get through. The fact I wasn't given a contact number for the day of the move should there be issues was unacceptable. A few hours after my voicemails I received a call back, but by that point everything was already packed and on the truck and I was just signing final documents. They had scratched walls, furniture and the ceiling coming down from the staircase. While they were packing, they left a number of items from furniture they disassembled on window casings and countertops, luckily we saw them and asked what they were from. They said they they must have forgotten to pack them with the furniture and asked us to just hold onto them until the delivery of the items. The next day, we got a call from our driver from Allied stating that they would come pick up our items the next day, we informed them that they had already been picked up and they were quite confused. After discussion it seems like Marathon picked up the order themselves to make a bit more money. At delivery the same thing occurred, the quote stated: "Again fully pad & protect your residence including floors - walls - door jambs - etc.;" And once again, none of this was done. Once all our items were unloaded we had the misfortune of finding out that nearly every box that was marked fragile was crushed or damaged. We haven't made a claim yet, as the items are still adding up, but we have had quite a few broken items. My TV was also listed in three inventory in the quote as a 55"and we were charged for a box for that. Unfortunately, the box they used was not designed for a TV of that size and was just trapped into a box with the side of the TV sticking it the end wrapped in a ton of paper and tape. The TV arrived with scratches all over the exterior. I would not recommend Marathon. They didn't deliver on the many promises they made in their quote that convinced us to use them in the first place. Many of our boxes arrived damaged, and quite a few of our items in those boxes were broken. They over promised and under delivered and performed worse than a company we've used in the past that charged half as much. read more

The crew from this company damaged my ceiling and ran out without telling me about it. They put a crack in the drywall about a foot long by slamming a bookcase into it. I know accidents happen and if they'd have let me know about it I could have claimed it with Allied but they didn't and I had to eat the cost. Be sure to watch these guys and don't hand out any tips until you've went over your house with a fine tooth comb. read more

We just moved from Canton to Dedham and used Marathon. They provide boxes, tape, wardrobe boxes for clothes, and were the least expensive quote. We had Will, Dennis and Edwin help us move, they were professional, quick and friendly. They made our move so easy (as easy as moving can go). All our stuff was packed in one truckload, nothing was damaged, and they placed everything where it belonged and checked multiple times to be sure we were happy with their service. I hope to not have to move anytime soon, but would definitely use them again and would recommend them to anyone. read more

You get what you pay for and moving companies are no exception. Kathy came out to my property for a site visit, explained to me the process and what I needed to do and what they would take care. She followed up with a proposal and from there my move was booked. The two man crew showed up on time and were extremely professional. You could tell it wasn't their first rodeo because everything they did was extremely systematic and efficient. If I had a question about the process they were quick to answer, and overall moving wasn't as inconvenient as I thought it would be, which is definitely a testament to the company. When they arrived at the new property, they already knew where most of the items were going, and even helped me plan out a room when I jokingly asked if either of them were interior designers. The administrative side is good. The moving aspect is NOT! There is no white glove element to it. The movers don't treat anything with respect and just try to get things done as quickly as possible. They busted up boxes, broke furniture, left things all over the place. The cherry on top was that it was a hot day and one mover took his shirt off b/c he was sweating so much and then decided to bring our couch cushions in the house four at a time. Two under his sweaty armpits and two death gripped in his hands. It was a horror to watch. read more

I learned that Summer in New England is when everyone moves. I was about to close on a house and had to move the first week of July. Lucas at Marathon found a date that worked for me when no other moving company could. He sent a guy out that same day to do a walk thorough so I could get a realistic quote. (Yes, you do have more stuff than you think). Moving day the lead guy Mark called to say they were there on their way. Don't be afraid to ask for enough movers and trucks. We wanted it done in one trip so we asked for 6 guys and two trucks. SOOOO glad we did. They never stopped working even when I would chat them up with questions. Some of the guys were from Romania and working for the summer. Super nice and interesting. One guy had his Masters in Psychology! They also offer FREE boxes which I was very happy to have and they come get the boxes at the end. Just call when you're ready and they'll put them back in circulation for the next move. Reuse is even better than recycle! I not only would use them again, I did. Different movers but same polite, fast service. At the end Mark went over the invoice in detail. It's really hard to estimate what a good price is for a move. Marathon was $800 less than Gentle Giant but more than others. I think this is what it costs to get free boxes and a professional company. read more

Short story: Movers broke a piece of glass in china cabinet - that's fine, as accidents happen. Mover's insurance will cover it, right? BUT: Marathon claimed their insurance pays $0.60 per pound payment. Since the piece of glass weighted 15 lbs, they decided to reimburse me $9. The glass was custom glass that cannot be special ordered, the unit is 10+ years old ... so basically going to cost me $5000+ to order a new china/dining set. Moral of the story: Marathon damaged a VERY expensive item, and decided they wouldn't pay for it. read more

I'm sorry to write this review because everything we experienced on the front end with Marathon was top-notch. Kathy and Lillian were great to work with and the moving team we had was amazing on everything but a few items. They didn't even damage any walls carrying big furniture down a very narrow stairwell. Had I not just had the worst customer service ever, we would have recommended this company and given them high marks. But it's not every day that I get accused of fraud twice in a situation where I was simply trying to get some small damages repaired. Sheila was the one I spoke with two times and gave me one of the worst customer experiences I've ever had. Two out of three damages we reported were told to the company right away and they agreed to fix those. One, however, we discovered after the 30 days grace period following our move. A set of valuable paintings that we had wrapped and unwrapped by Marathon was placed on a concrete floor and the expensive framing was scuffed on two of the 3 pieces. Because we started a construction project right when we moved in, our basement where the art pieces were located wasn't unpacked until well after our move. Therefore I didn't discover the damaged frames until about 3 months after our arrival. I had paid for insurance, which cost an extra $250 and provided me $50,000 of coverage for "actual cash value" on my shipment. Our total move probably contained a couple hundred thousand dollars worth of items, but there were three insurance options on the form: 1. Basic coverage which was free and reimbursed .60 on the cost of the items. 2. Transit value insurance which was unavailable for items going into storage (ours were being stored so not an option). 3. And $50,000 of coverage for $250, the most you could get, so this was the option we chose. I'm still unclear as to why the "fraud" was being accused. Sheila mentioned that I hadn't declared the full value of our shipment and hadn't insured based on that. But I simply chose the most insurance I could get - option #3. The only fault I can see on our part is that I was late in declaring our damages. But wouldn't a reasonable business who was concerned about its reputation try to make good on something that really would have been no skin off their backs? I have been in customer service businesses all my life and that would have been an easy affirmative choice. The damage form I filled out asked me the original purchase value on my 3 damaged items, so that's what I put down. These totaled around $9500. Yes that is a high amount but I was never expecting to be reimbursed the replacement cost of the items. That's what was simply required on the form. The art was expensive - I can show the original receipts - but I wasn't asking them to buy me new art, I just wanted the frames cleaned up. But before we could even get to the point of discussing what needed fixing, Sheila had brought up the word fraud. It felt like she had brought a pre-determined mindset to our conversation that I was somehow trying to scam them. But I simply wanted my stuff fixed that Marathon's guys (really just one new and inexperienced guy) dinged up. Would it really have cost Marathon that much to fix a couple of scuffs on some frames and saved a customer who would have helped build relationships with many others in the future? I would have recommended Marathon to everyone I knew and I actually have in the past, but thanks to Sheila and her poor customer service and horrible tone, now I can't do that. read more

But despite this, my salesperson at Marathon stood by my side as I tried to recover from the terrible experience with the Bekins Agent. Even the owner tried to assist me with advice, and they never received one penny from us. They are extremely rare, honest, play totally by the book, take pride in their contracts, inform and EDUCATE you as the inexperienced naive consumer. Yes, they may be a little more expensive, but I have learned the very hard way, that so many of these movers give you very rose tinted time estimates that are 35 to 50% off. Oh, Marathon. I have a a mixed review. We loved Marathon the first time we used them to move in 2004. We hired them again a few months ago for a significantly bigger job including a few weeks of storage between move-out & move-in. Getting the quote & setting up the job with Paul was a pleasure. The best price quote of the 4 we got, and the job ended up slightly under that. And the guys who actually did the moves were outstanding. A+ service there. But dealing with the office staff in the few weeks since the move has been a royal pain. We had some damage to a piece that required repair, and it took several weeks of me calling them before the repair was set-up (and the repair was great, thanks Furniture Medic). Then we got the last of the boxes unpacked and yes, there was one missing. Our last box to be packed, you know all the really important things you keep out until the day you move? It's not in our new home. So I called the office again and got a 10 minute lecture in how the "missing" box was definitely in our house. How missing boxes ALWAYS turn up in the home. Story after story of how it's always the homeowner at fault. Ummm, how about you just help me find my stuff? Finally, after a weak "we'll have look around", *click*, I was left feeling rather pissed. Look, if the box is gone, it's gone. No big deal. But don't make me feel like a jackass for inquiring about it. Update, 6 months later. The missing box never did turn up in our home and, as suspected, I never heard back from Marathon. read more

Even it was about 4 years (11/2008) ago I had used this company but I can't forget what they had done to me. The person who came to give me the estimate claimed the traveling fee was included in the quote but at the end the mover presented to me an extra ~$300+ traveling fee. At first, my husband and I refused to pay this amount but they said they'll stay in our house until we paid. They became very unfriendly. I attempted to call the office to get an answer but it was a Saturday and the office was closed for the weekend. Frustrated at this point, ending up paying what they had demanded. I will admit that I was the faintest bit skeptical of these guys after the first round of estimates--they came back with a number that was quite a bit higher than two other companies we asked with. Never have I been so wrong. It turns out, 9 hours to move an entire household of stuff is an ABSURDLY SHORT amount of time, and the other guys who were quoting 3 or 4 hours for the same services were probably planning on firing our dishware out of a cannon aimed at the new house, and then stuffing the cat into the glove compartment for the drive over. We had a team of 3 guys moving us (whose names are now escaping me and it is KILLING ME, because they are amazing and should be celebrated in song), and if I had 1/10th of the hustle that these guys have, I would be... well, not writing Yelp reviews during the work day, that's for sure. 8 hours into the move, all three of them refused an offer of dinner, and just asked for Gatorade. Notable highlights: 1. Whenever they were not carrying boxes of our crap from the house to the truck, these guys were straight-up running. Like, when they ran out of boxes to assemble, someone would literally sprint back to the truck parked outside. 2. We were not packed for this move. Not even close. Dishes still in the cabinets, blankets on the bed, shoes in the closet... it wasn't a good scene. This was after two weeks of us preparing for the move. These guys packed our entire house up and loaded it onto a truck in three hours. THREE HOURS. The last time I moved, it took me that long to park the U-Haul. 3. But don't think there's any slipshod packing work here. Our Ikea dishes made the trip unscratched, because they were just as careful with the $1.50 plates as they were with my grandma's china. When I unpacked the boxes from the kitchen, I discovered two open boxes of cereal that they had TAPED SHUT to keep the Cheerios from spilling on the trip. I cannot even. 4. Because they understand the insanity of the moving process, Marathon pulled the permits with the city to block off the street in front of our house so the truck could park, and then posted the "No Parking" signs themselves. I didn't have to set foot in the town hall, which is good, since a week of packing our lives into boxes would have otherwise guaranteed that they would have had to park on the lawn. 5. Speaking of parking on the lawn: when the truck couldn't fit up the driveway at the new place, nobody batted an eye. They managed to parallel park, on the sidewalk, in a spot about 8 inches longer than the giant truck, and didn't even roll their eyes at my complete lack of foresight. Every person I know in this town has a story about terrible movers. Don't do it! Don't hire the lowest bidder! Hire the guys who will bust their asses for you, and then apologize for not being able to get your 80" boxspring around the 60" hairpin turn on the stairs. read more

So many positive things to say about my experience with Marathon. I used them to move from one apartment to another this past weekend. Setting up the appointment was very easy. Their estimate and phone consultation was effective and courteous. Everything went great on moving day. I was impressed at how hard our 3-man team worked on the move. Overall the service was excellent, the crew was very efficient, arrived at the time they said they would, packed everything carefully and was great to work with. I used the packing service and it was tremendous and everything arrived at our new house in great shape. It was one day to pack and one day to move, for the crew and service couldn't have asked for more. The only thing keeping it from being 5 stars is that price was almost $1,000 over the estimate. I understand some overage on an estimate but 1K is a bit extreme and depending on your circumstances could be quite a hit that you aren't prepared for. The crew that moved my furniture were really hard workers. Even the 90+ degree heat didn't seem to slow them down. They were really polite and easy to work with. However, they caused some damage to the house I was selling. The crew leader took pictures and assured me that someone would call me on Monday to arrange repairs. No one ever called me until I contacted them several days later, but by then we were unable to arrange someone to repair the damage before the house was sold. read more

I did a lot of research before choosing a company to move my family of 8 out of our 4 bedroom house. With Marathon, my calls were promptly returned and the secretary/dispatch people I spoke with were awesome! They gave me an estimate that seemed reasonable and the move was arranged. A few weeks later, the house we thought we had fell through, and we had to change the date and location of the move. Marathon was able to accommodate us without any problems. Our 4 man team showed up exactly when we were told they would, and they were amazing!!! They knew exactly what they were doing and worked with precision and diligence. They checked in with us several times to make sure that everything was exactly how we wanted it before they left. They also finished EARLY and we paid LESS than the estimate we were given! Moving sucks. Moving when its a 90 degree day, with Amazon-jungle type humidity sucks brutally. Having professional, organized, friendly, courteous, know-their-stuff movers makes moving in these conditions so much more bearable!!! They made a positive impression from the first phone call, they were able to send someone to my place to give me an estimate after hours (a huge help for me). The fact that they take the time to send someone out to give you an estimate (makes SO much more sense than giving a blind estimate over the phone and it was well below the 2 other "phone" bids I received!) went over big with me. Day of the move - they showed up right when they said the would and did not waste a moment. Everything was carefully wrapped, anything that needed to be disassembled was done quickly an carefully and they checked and double-checked what was supposed to go. My new apartment was tricky to get some furniture into - but they hoisted the huge and cumbersome items over the back deck and took care in doing so. The heat and humidity (it was brutal) did not have any effect on their level of helpfulness, friendliness or professionalism. Not only did they come in under time, but under budget as well.
