If I could give more than 5 stars I would. When starting our search for our move from Framingham to Atlanta my original thought was to do Pods or U-Pack as a cost-cutting initiative. My brother in law who has been a mover for the better part of 30 years was very down on the self-serve Pods. So I researched and found that it was not the best way to go. He recommended Humboldt as a company he knew. He told me they are honest and have a not to exceed guarantee. I looked at them as well as two other national movers. Humboldt came in with the best price (which is always a good thing) Upon selecting Humboldt I worked with Dave on the estimate and initial contact. He informed me of their services and who I would be in contact with. During the process, there was no runaround or confusion. When you call they answer the phone ' How can I relieve your stress' which anyone who has moved long-distance knows what that is like. My contact/coordinator was Bethany, She was a great resource and help during the entire move. On move day our driver Hector showed up on time and ready to go. He and one other gentleman load our entire 4 bed 2 bath home in just under 6 hours. Hector and his loader were amazing and extremely professional. When we pulled away on our drive to Atlanta I knew our stuff was in great hands. We received several calls from Bethany throughout the day of the move as well as our delivery date. Hector called from the road with status reports as well. As expected our Truck arrived as promised at 8:30 am this morning. Hector and a crew of 2 other gentlemen came in and completely unloaded the truck and placed things where we wanted them as well as helped in getting a piece of furniture up the stairs and into my home office. They were efficient and professional. To wrap up the day Bethany called and checked on us and the whole process. I cannot say enough good things about our experience. If I knew then what I know now I would have saved myself a lot of time and effort and just gone with Humboldt. read more

We moved out of our home of 40 years in Burlington last May 2024. Our items were moved to Humboldt's storage facility in Canton and were kept there til we located and moved to our condo on the following November 15th. The owner Howard Goldman and his employees went above and beyond at every pass. They were extraordinary in their responsiveness when we had questions about billing or adjustments to our move. Jamie -our coordinator, was always reachable and was very helpful every single time we communicated with her. Howard, Jamie, and every employee represented Humboldt in the best possible way. The prices for our moves and storage were quite fair. None of our furniture items were damaged in any way. The movers themselves were experienced, careful, and professional. I've moved from MA to OH to CO and back to MA. In the move from MA to OH to CO, I lost no inventory with a different moving company. In the move from CO to MA, with Humboldt, I lost inventory; I had multiple pieces of furniture damaged. Thought I was clever hiding some personal items. Huge mistake. We were referred to Humboldt by a friend and we were super impressed! They estimated 7 hours, but the job was done in 5 hours. They gave me a prompt refund on my credit card. We'll be using them to move us back in after our house renovation, so hopefully we find that nothing was damaged as it was shipped to and from the storage unit. Very disappointed with our interstate move to date. We selected Humboldt because they are associated with United Van Lines but the national partnership has not helped. We specified the unique layout of the move out home and had a representative come out in person to be very clear on the scope of work. However, on move out day, they sent a 2 person crew to move a house full of furniture on the 3rd and 4th floor. It took 8.5 hours. Our window to have our stuff arrive was 12.21 to 12.31, today we were informed that the driver 'might' have COVID so looking like early January. Complete horror show. A major thumbs down for Humboldt from our viewpoint. I am regretting my decision to select them for a time sensitive and important move. An update, Humboldt is attempting to have another driver deliver, we may get our stuff on Sunday January 2nd. Fingers crossed read more

We are happy with our moving experience from Southeast Massachusetts to Miami. The 3 guys arrived on time and worked hard and efficiently ( we did spend time preparing and had all boxes ready in garage). While the delivery in Miami took 2 weeks longer than expected - we are in the middle of the great driver shortage. We were kept informed. Worst company ever! Over $12,000 worth of my things were missing when they arrived here, merely a day's drive away! They failed to respond to any of my notices of this (phone, mail, etc.). Then they said it was too late to file a claim (they just ignored it). I talked to corporate headquarters and apparently I was supposed to have filed a POLICE REPORT! BE SURE TO DO THIS!!! They are horrible people--I had been a long-time customer, but since I moved out of the area, I guess they figured they wouldn't get any more business from me, so easy pickings! Their movers couldn't read simple notes, were kinda scary (snooping thru personal things instead of packing). They threw fine pottery (one of a kind) into boxes without any padding at all, they packed all the cords separately from their devices--what a mess! They destroyed part of a wall in my new place. They also arrived 4 hours late (selling off my stuff, I assume) and were recruiting random strangers to help them unload the van. Some of these neighbors said they had a threatening demeanor. Nevertheless, the owners stand by the lead mover, begging the question: what exactly does "bonded" mean? Nothing, I guess. They owe me an apology and a lot of money. read more

Very bag service. Ruined moving day for us. We schedule our move way ahead of time but they didn't tell us there will be a schedule change until the day of moving!!! They were supposed to come first thing in the morning but after lots of excuses they didn't come till the night!!! We had to pack all our stuff, which was supposed to their job, and we were bounced between several different agents and none of them were helpful. We had to sit around for an entire day, pushing all our plans back because of this. The most stressful moving experience ever. Update: Delivery----they delivered our stuff on the very last day of the delivery window. We have been compartmentalizing because this service is too stressful and we have other things to worry about. Our couch was scratched, wooden table top was scratched, a bedroom mirror was broken, three large cutting mats were missing. Also, they packed several pairs of leather dress shoes (which were on the high value item lists they made us make) by throwing all of them (unprotected) in a box, stuffed with some paper on top and call it a day. So of course they were squished out of shape and dirty and scratched. And they pack all the knives the same way...not individually packed but all thrown together in one box with paper on top, so the blades were chipping off each other the whole trip. There were also big dirty marks on our mattress. It's funny when we were on the phone with one of the many agents we have to deal with, she kept promising that the service will be very good, very professional, very fast. I couldn't have been happier with my experience with Humboldt. They were on top of things and responsive - Bethany said she would be 'there' for me the whole way through and she was! The coordination was top notch, and given I was moving from two states to one at some distance, that took some doing. LONG story short - the second truck with the rest of my things that didn't fit in the first truck (BIG red flag) still hasn't arrived five weeks later since I moved to Massachusetts. We ended up with Humboldt Storage & Moving Company ( an agent of United Van lines) because two other companies couldn't meet a tight deadline (imposed by the future buyer of our place). I can't complain about the price because of my husband's employer are paying them. I will complain about the service. It has been a series of mishaps. They send one guy to pack a 1 bedroom condo for two people. I raise my eyebrows. Just before 10 am he says he'll be done by 4 or 5 pm. By 2 pm, he's still in the kitchen blathering on or talking on his cell phone. By 6 pm, he's not close to being finished and has to come another day. Then there is the "miscommunication" between the coordinator and dispatch. We specified an early pick up time because we need to be out of our condo by a certain time. The last business day before the move, they call to confirm a 1 pm start time. HELLO!?!? This could make or break the sale of our place. Moving is stressful. You certainly don't need people who are inept to jack you around. Update: This is our 3rd move across country and the bumpiest of them all. On the receiving end, we had more problems since the Humboldt agent didn't tell the company delivering our stuff that a shuttle service had to be used. We had called the day before to tell the agent specifically that a shuttle was necessary. They rolled up in their long trailer and of course couldn't make it down the alley leading to the loading dock. We finally got our goods but it's been very difficult. I wouldn't recommend Humboldt at all and wish that we had gone with another company. read more

I had a terrible experience moving from Boston to the Midwest last fall. I had hired cross-country movers once before, so I have something to compare to, and I was angry and disappointed with how this move was handled. First, the good: The estimated weight for my move was almost on the nose, and I even got a small amount of money back at the end. They dropped off a huge pile of recycled moving boxes, plus packing tape and paper, for free ahead of my move. The guys who loaded my stuff in Boston were friendly and seemed to do a good job, but I was put off by their rental truck and lack of extra supplies. None of my many, many boxes were lost. The woman who helped me with my damaged/lost items claim was very friendly, but I think she might have been from a 3rd party claims company. And the bad: Where do I start? They smashed my nearly-new 42" plasma TV, and they lost a unique armchair from Pier 1 that I loved. (Interestingly, when I went online to try to replace the chair, I found an identical chair with the same wear marks posted on eBay in Connecticut. They refused to buy this chair and ship it to me.) I was reimbursed for both of these items after an arduous process of having someone come out to inspect the TV and then filling out their paperwork. Nearly every piece of furniture had damage that was visible but too minor to justify a claim. By comparison, when I hired cross-country movers 10 years ago, I was happily surprised by the lack of any damage at all. (Similarly, 8 years ago when I hired movers to pack a Penske truck and then drove that truck 3000 miles on my own and had friends unload, I also didn't end up with any damage.) The fellow who did my estimate was brash and condescending. When I moved cross-country 10 years ago, it was normal to set a day and time for delivery, and so this was my expectation going in. When I asked about setting a delivery date, he immediately copped an attitude and made a dramatic show of walking to my door as if to leave, saying something along the lines of "good luck finding anyone who will do that for you." He was the first estimate I had arranged, so I didn't yet know about this industry change; there was absolutely no reason for him to be such a jerk about this. Also, as someone else noted, once they have your money and stuff, the (mostly) friendly customer service turns cold. Every single question was met with a sour attitude and canned answers. The delivery team in the Midwest was cringe-worthy. The guy in charge kept insulting and berating the other guy on the small team of three -- that other guy was in his 60's, and I was in awe of his ability to haul things; I felt guilty and gross, and I tried to intervene when I could to stand up for the older fellow. The delivery team was slated to arrive first thing in the morning, and they showed up nearly an hour early. When I told them I needed more time to brush my teeth, etc., the head guy grumbled at me and hung up. When I complained to Humboldt about the delivery team, they told me they're not responsible for that part of the move because it was another company that did the delivery (?!?), and no one could tell me the name of that company. I'm glad that so many other people had positive experiences using these folks, but if I could go back in time, I'd happily pay more for better service from another company. read more

This is in response to Dan K's posting shown here: Dan K. must be a politician! He states that problems with my closing caused the delays with the move and is basically saying that I caused the overage in hours. The fact is, my closing was delayed one day, which meant that my move to the new home could not be completed as originally scheduled -- it was postponed one day. This in no way caused the eight hours that I was told the move would take to blow up to nearly 14. Nothing at all! The only "scope of the move" that changed was the delivery day. The fact remains that the job took almost twice as long as I was quoted -- that is the scope that changed! This company is disorganized and does not offer you a stress-free move. if you choose Humboldt you are choosing to schedule a late pick-up from your current address, a late delivery at your new address (10 days promised--it will be more), and take additional PTO that will need to be taken in order to accommodate their set requirement upon delivery for you to be there, with no compensation consideration from Humboldt. read more

I used this company to move to Boston, which was a work related move from DC. At the time, my company paid for the move. However, the movers who picked up and delivered my things were SUPER professional, courteous, and amazingly fast! The whole process was explained to me, and I appreciated this as I had never made a "big" move before that I didn't load my own stuff up and take it. Everything arrived in Boston, safe and sound, and undamaged. I even had a glass top table and wicker chairs that arrive without getting broken or beat up. They were super careful when putting things back together and even help arrange my furniture the way I wanted it in the new place. When I was moving out of Boston, I of course called this company again for an estimate. I looked around, but decided not to go with any company that called me back and I couldn't understand on the phone. Humboldt came out, and gave me an estimate, and again explained ways to make my move easier and to fit my needs and budget, since I was the one paying this time. I again was so impressed, that I had no choice but to use them. I was not disappointed. The movers who both picked up and delivered were professional, friendly, and fast. They took care of my belongings, as well as the apartment so I didn't lose any security deposit. (Ever have that happen because some mover scratched the hardwoods? Sucks!) I recently moved from Boston to Long Beach. I have never made a move like this so I was extremely concerned that I was going to get ripped off. Dave MacDonald provided me with an estimate. When he arrived, he took his shoes off (didn't want to track the snow in from outside) and changed his shoes with another pair to walk in the house - how courteous! I had a lot of questions and he answered all of them and immediately made me feel comfortable. Even after he left - he was very responsive to any questions that came up. While I received quotes from other vendors that were slightly lower, I decided to go with Humboldt because of the level of professionalism I received. I knew I couldn't go wrong. Elizaire was my moving coordinator and kept me abreast of everything along the way. From scheduling the time to pick up, to where they were along the route to when I could expect delivery. He also answered questions for me related to shipping costs, insurance, etc. He was very responsive and SUPER friendly. When the driver Dave and his team showed up to my place to pack up the truck, Dave took a close inventory of my belongings and was not only nice but very funny too. Those guys were in and out in no time. Dave contacted me 2 days in advance to let me know when he was arriving to Long Beach so I could coordinate with my cousin who was going to receive my stuff since I was still in Boston. My cousin also shared how impressed she was with Dave and his team. Every person I came into contact with at Humboldt was extremely professional. I really wanted to leave a review for those who were ever in the same situation as I was. For many years we were moved by the military so we never had to worry about paying or who was showing up. This time it was all on us. I read all these horror stories about scams (which we did encounter but thank goodness my husband was not as gullible as I was and said we're not going with them. The major sign, really pushy in getting our business.) of how they hold your things hostage and charge you different than the quote. I was having really bad anxiety of this, especially since we were moving 20,000 lbs of household goods. I checked movingscam.com and found humboldt. I spoke to Bill MacRae and he helped ease my anxiety so much. He stayed in touch throughout the whole process, we FaceTime to see exactly what I needed to cut costs. They actually a day before the move reduced my cost like he promised might happened when I first spoke to him. He wasn't pushy in getting my business but reasonable in when I needed to secure they're services. When the move came close I then dealt with Elizaire. He also was very comforting. With both of them I felt like I was dealing with 2 of my close friends trying to help me out. They were there all the way and I knew they had my back no matter what. The movers showed up Jose, Lilly, and Carlos (Q showed up for unloading) All Super nice but didn't talk much which I liked because that meant they were constantly moving and working. They took 1 break for lunch and it wasn't even that long. We moved from Texas to NC. The whole process was stress free and nothing broken. Also nothing in my house like walls damaged by them handing my things roughly. I really liked that I had the same movers that loaded and unloaded me. It made it a lot more personable and easier when they were asking where I wanted to put things. Everything went so easy that I'm actually writing this while sitting outside watching them unload because they're taking care of everything and I have nothing to do. I always thought that the people writing these awesome reviews were friends or employees trying to defend all the bad reviews so I want to assure you that I don't work for them nor have I ever even heard of them prior to doing google searches. Where do I start? I was moving from Cambridge to Brookline. A one bedroom apartment. They told me they would start sometime between 8-10 AM. I asked for an early start because my new place has a rule that all moves must be completed by 5 PM. They showed up at 10:20. I figured it would be ok since everything was packed. Alll they had to do was load the truck and wrap the furniture. I went over to the new place at noon because the cable guy was coming. They were all done loading boxes and were wrapping the furniture when I left. By 3:45 pm they STILL had not arrived in Brookline ( less than 5 miles away). Calls to their cell were not answered. I called the office...sooo unhelpful. Told me they couldn't get ahold of them either. I suggested they send another person over here to help them unload. The building here told me they would extend the window for me till 6 PM but no later. They show up. FINALLY. No apologies, nothing. In order to be done by 6, I had to HELP them unload. A woman. We all know the moving industry is riddled with wretched companies that break your stuff, get it fixed by shysters and bill you incorrectly. If that is the experience you are seeking, look no more. Humboldt is the top of the pile when it comes to bad service and broken goods. We recently moved to the Midwest with Humboldt and have regretted it. They overbilled us and broke our valuables. When we called to make a claim, they never sent the claim forms. We asked them four times! Basically, they just wanted us to go away and not make a claim. We used Humboldt recently to move our family of 5 from Boston to San Francisco. The whole experience from top to bottom was mind-blowing. Dave MacDonald gave us the original estimate - he was courteous, kind, extremely professional, responsive, and patient during the entire process. Humboldt called multiple times prior to our move to ask how they could help us. Dave dropped off moving boxes for free prior to our move. The guys who showed up to load the truck worked tirelessly from morning to night with hardly any breaks. The tracking process was awesome during the move. The shipment arrived on time and the offloading process went smoothly. We didn't get charged for anything extra and we paid the exact amount quoted. I used Humboldt to move from the Boston area to Vermont. They were pretty great. I got a binding quote from them when they came in and inspected all my stuff. It was super easy. Then when I decided to pack most of the stuff myself, the guy just came back and adjusted the price. The crew they sent was AWESOME. I don't know about you, but I can't stand watching other people work. I can't sit still. They were totally cool with me rearranging boxes and vacuuming and "helping." I had a 3 man crew to load up the stuff. They only packed up some dishes and electronics but they did a great job. Make sure to look through all that paper though - I accidentally threw away the tray to my microwave because I didn't notice it! There was a 2 man crew for unloading. They got everything up a crazy staircase to the 3rd floor and they were so nice. I unpacked as they worked and they even got rid of the empty boxes for me. The only problem I had was that the administration was kind of nutty. The crew had to be in two places on the morning of my pick up and so arrived an hour after my scheduled time range. I totally don't blame the crew. Then, there was a discrepancy between the time agreed to by the coordinator and the time the crew driver was planning to arrive. I was happy to coordinator directly with the crew. They're the ones hauling all the way to VT! In the end, I didn't pay any extra for the crazy stairs, or the fact that the truck couldn't pull all the way up to the building. It was a very reasonably priced move. All in all, I highly recommend them for out of state moves. (There are different rules for local moves and from what I've read, most people with problems moved locally.) read more
