Since my friend loves uni, I decided on this place since I've been eyeing their uni bowl for a while now. We both got the UNI BOWL (off menu), but it was really nothing special. It only comes with a few pieces of uni, seaweed salad, assortment of seafood, but no sashimi. I thought it was their take on a chirashi bowl, but I guess it's nothing like that. They also serve banchan, and I hate to say it, but their banchan was better than the uni bowl. My friend had to order two more rounds of nigiri because he wasn't full from the uni bowl. In the end, they did offer complimentary green tea ice cream though, which I appreciated. Tip: This place is also super hard to find. Food: It was a new experience because my previous instances from having sea urchin was only from all you can eat sushi, served as nigiri. The side dish I ordered came with a garnish, and my dumb self decided to eat the garnish. Yeah oops my bad! It was a funny story to tell though. I really came for the uni but was told their supplier had a temporary shortage. Was extremely disappointed but our waitress threw in some extra items to make up for it. Highlights ---------------- Porridge -- The porridge was plain but they definitely added some seasonings to it because it was clearly more flavorful than a bland porridge. Ultra thick consistency with just a hint of sweetness from the rice. What an excellent 1st course! Sashimi Platter -- A massive plate overloaded with sashimi. We're talking cuts of fatty tuna, salmon, yellowtail, red snapper and lobster. The tuna was incredibly soft but the salmon seemed to have a thin layer of gooey film. The lobster was unbelievably sweet, tastes just like how it is steamed but with a softer, wet texture. Lobster Soup -- They take the head from the sashimi platter and cook it in the soup to give it that distinct flavor. The soup comes with an assortment of vegetables but the flavor from the lobster is really what makes it. It's the last course of your meal, which is great for the tummy. The restaurant gets especially packed for dinner so make sure you get there early. I hear the Asian buses like to stop here because of the famous special combo. So disappointed. I rarely have one star on Yelp. I came for the sea urchin bowl and was told it doesn't come in the sea urchin shell for a long time. They do have "urchin bowl" in regular bowl which is $19. I ordered it. When it came, I saw two super tiny sea urchin on the top. The size is about the same as the nail of my thrum. Although I was surprised about the miso soup and salad with my two rolls, I am very disappointed for the most part. I got the caterpillar roll and the crunchy shrimp roll. Our server actually was pretty nice and was quite quick with all the side dishes and the hot tea which I loved. I got the Man Sun dinner which came with I believe five pieces of sushi, sashimi, four piece roll, and tempura for $22.00. The price was pretty cheap, with how much food you are getting. The restaurant was quite small, so the tables were mainly full. We were seated and given our menus immediately, however it took a while to get someone to take our orders. We ordered an eel rice bowl (not pictured), the man sun lunch special, rice with fish egg (not pictured) and a beef teriyaki lunch box. The eel rice bowl and the rice with fish egg were brought to our table and the waitress helped mix the bowls. Both were solid. We were originally going to order the sea urchin rice, but they ran out so we got the rice with fish egg. It had a mix of different things such as eel, uni, egg, etc. The eel bowl was solid, but not special. The man sun lunch special came with a mix of sashimi, sushi, and tempura. This was a good portion of food for the price. The fish was good and not overly chewy. The beef teriyaki lunch box was very worth for the price! I came on a Thursday night around 8pm to try their famed uni bowl but was informed that they ran out. Would recommend coming earlier in the day/week to guarantee your chances. Thankfully, they still had the abalone soup, which comes in a huuuuge bowl (enough for 3 people I'd say) and was delicious and full of umami flavor. Other things I liked about the meal were the complimentary Korean side dishes and ice cream they give before/after the meal. I also ordered a sashimi salad- three types of fish over a bed of miso-dressed lettuce. The sashimi is usually salmon, tuna, and tilapia, but I asked to sub out tilapia for yellowtail, and they were kind enough to do it. However, I wish I didn't because the yellowtail tasted awful and it even seemed like there were hints of chemicals in the fish. I was over charged by $11 dollars for a bill that was supposed to be 70 dollars for an order of Albacore roll (14.99), Hamachi Kama (24.99) , bento box (19.99), and a beer (8). They said they made a "mistake" when I asked them why I was charged $81 instead of $70. How do you make a mistake like that? On top of that we were going to leave another 20% not knowing we were over charged. They hovered over us while we were trying to figure out what to even tip them after they had already pulled this shady stunt. The outside is very unassuming and parking is a bit tricky (there is an open lot on the side of the building) but the food is amazing. At least every month or so, my co-worker would rave about her family's visit to Man Sun for lunch over the weekend. Because of her, I've had this place bookmarked for well over a year, just waiting for the right opportunity (aka, close proximity) to try it out. Both came with miso soup, a bunch of banchan, and at the end of the meal, a scoop of green tea ice cream! BF's order was a bento box that not only included the teriyaki (Korean style) and tempura, but also a salad, rice, and your choice of sashimi or sushi roll. It's a nice bang for your buck for under $8. Since I was squeamish about eating fresh uni right out of its shell (and with other Yelpers commenting how it was still alive when it got to their table), I wanted it in a normal bowl and not in its living quarters. Tasted very fresh, just like Maruhide Uni Club (RIP -_-). Service was good, though since we came close to the end of their lunch period, the servers were cleaning up and we had to get up to find someone for the check and get some tea refills. I can definitely see why people are raving about this pretty new Japanese restaurant! My boyfriend came here with his friends and liked it so much, he decided to bring his family and me back again a few days later. Ambience: The restaurant itself is quite small, so apparently there is usually a long wait in order to be seated. They also don't accept reservations after 7 PM or so either, which is quite fair. And this place is quite popular among the younger crowd who don't seem to mind the hour or so wait that might occur. There isn't a parking lot either - besides street parking - or in the lot next door (which technically is a part of the farmer's market). We were lucky and were able to be seated in a private room. The pictures on the wall and the furniture all were very nice, but the food is the focal point of this review! Food: People mainly come here for the uni bowl, which I think is a part of their sashimi deals. We ordered two large sashimi platters. Because they are a Korean owned restaurant, they served a lot of unique small dishes that included snails, kimchi, seaweed, shrimp, pancake, etc. The sashimi platter was enormous and had so many slices of fresh fish on it - salmon, yellowtail, albacore, lobster tail ... I can't eat fish, but I did taste the salmon and lobster tail, and both were amazing. Salmon was soft, succulent and overall smooth. But the best part of the meal was indeed the uni bowl. Each person had their own individual uni shell that had sticky rice, seaweed, uni, fish egg, and picked radish. The sticky rice had good flavor, so when mixed with everything else (along with the sesame and seaweed), had incredible flavor that made me want to keep eating even though I was already pretty full. After the uni bowl, they take the lobster (which is placed in front of you on the platter while it is slowly dying ... poor guy) to make into a lobster soup. Definitely hit the spot after a pretty full meal. And on top of that - vanilla ice cream to be served at the end! Service: was amazing. Everybody was courteous and really nice. They stopped by often to make sure we were okay, and I felt like they were constantly bringing us food. This restaurant is Korean owned which explains why the dishes came with banchan (side dishes) when normally a true Japanese style restaurant isn't structured that way. This hybrid mix of both Korean and Japanese is brilliant! I came here for the live uni bowl ($14) which I found out wasn't even listed on the menu. The wait staff explained that the combo packages were a better deal so we ended up getting the Man Sun Sashimi Special plate in medium for $75. This package came with two live uni bowls, a pretty decent sized sashimi platter, seaweed and several other small banchan dishes and there was lobster soup at the end. Talk about one hearty meal for $75. I think the portion was perfect for two people! Venue: This place is pretty small so I can only imagine that the wait could possibly be horrendous. We were fortunate to make a reservation and avoided all that unnecessary wait time. There's both bar and table seating. If you're going to order a combo and share, I would suggest grabbing a table. We were seated at the bar and so laying out the dishes was difficult. We had to shift and rearrange our plates every time a new plate came in. Parking: I didn't see a parking lot or structure. October 11, 2014 UNI BOWL! I have never had an uni bowl before where it's served in it's own shell! I was so lucky to have an amazing husband and wife duo take me out to cheer me up. I loved the bowl. I can not have an uni bowl every again without expecting the shell to come with. The bowl was $14.99 and I believe it's well worth it. We ended up skipping on the free green tea ice cream because we were extremely full off of the delicious meal. Located in Diamond Bar and Walnut border, this place was pretty difficult to find. I was scared that it wouldn't be enough food but this seriously was the biggest sea urchin I've seen. Uni on steroids. It was super fresh and I loved the combination of rice, seaweed, fish egg, and pickled veggies in there. Service: for a busy restaurant, the service was awesome! What a delicious hole in the wall sushi place in Walnut!! So glad I found this place! Location/Parking: Honestly I had no idea where it was. And did not see it when I "arrived" according to my gps. It is Father's dinner, (Very Bad Service).The waiter just place all the food on the corner, (not the center of the table). And we only have 45 mins to eat. (She keeps telling us, I got a group of nine people to come in after we sit down.) Here causes two stars already. Back to the food, the sushi is like Toys, no taste, not fresh. Taste like shit. Korean styled sushi. No idea why this place has 4 stars. Ordered the extra large Sashimi Special. The quality of sashimi is extremely poor considering what you're paying for. Sadly, the quality is only slightly better than your average revolving belt sushi such as Kura Sushi in Brea, yet a whole lot more expensive. Rolls... I don't even know where to begin. Lacks flavor. Also, poor time management skills - they left our entire family boat at the counter for at least 20 mins before serving us. Uni rice bowl... nothing special. Pretty much like a poke bowl with uni. Also, the matcha ice cream served at the end of dinner was way too sweet. All I tasted were the sugar and cream and zero matcha taste. They have no real wasabi, only the fake horseradish stuff. Ginger isn't that fresh either. Sorry, rather stick to my favorite Ootoro Sushi at walnut. read more

o3.3o.14 Dinner after karaoke! :D I heard they have yummy uni bowls here. I'm not quite of an uni fan but it won't hurt to try, right? We ordered the combo for two, which it comes with my craving of sashimi and uni bowl. There were also side dishes, snail...spiral shell snail? and grilled fishes. Oh, almost forgot about the alcohol. Yes, your choice of hot sake, beer, or soft drinks. Of course go for the hot sake! :) We've been told there'll be a lobster soup for the 4 people combo, but not for 2. Which it was fine, didn't really matter to us. But, we also got the lobster soup! Why? I guess because we were more lovable. Haha jk! We never found out. Anyway, it says it's a combo for 2 but it's more like for 4 in our case. We couldn't finish! Apologize for wasting food. :( Anyway, the uni was ok, not bad. :) read more
