Are you one of those people who are leery about going to a sushi place that is run by non-Japanese? I'd have to admit that I am one of those people, but once you know why you're here then it doesn't matter...
Man Sun is a Korean run sushi bar that panders to that type of crowd looking for fresh sea urchin (uni) and lobster, but without spending premium sushi bar prices looking for a deal. Naturally they offer so much more than just uni and lobster but I surmised that this is what lures people in: the chance to have shellfish so fresh that the tentacles are still moving (ok folks, it's not a Jedi mind trick, all they do is squirt a little lemon onto the critters and their just cleaved nervous systems are reacting to the acid)...
It's hard to crack the code of the menu unless you can read Korean so allow me to explain the omakase or chefs choice, which here is called the Man Sun Special Combo. As it was explained to us by the waiter (and I use the term loosely), there are three levels for $50 / $75 / $100 meant for two, three, or four people. Even though there were only three of us, they recommended the $100 level because that's when they serve you the lobster, naturally. I suppose if there were more people in your group then they would adjust the price upwards in increments of $25 and adjust the portions, but regardless of how many people are in the group everyone gets the uni bowl...
I can only say that you need to try this at least once. The uni is indeed fresh -- sort of sweet, buttery, and creamy. The texture was a little soft, it didn't quite have the firmness or texture that looks like the papillae bumps on a tongue. and yet it wasn't fishy or funky in smell. A lot of the flesh is presented with the sashimi but the star is the uni bowl itself. They save the shell of the uni, spindly spikes and all, and load it up with rice, seaweed, ginger, roe, sort of like an uni chirashi... delicious...
The other part of the meal I remember most is the lobster sashimi. It was the first time I've ever had it. It doesn't have a strong fishy flavor and the texture was gentle and soft, not very firm. They would later take the head and the claws and make a soup out of it adding tofu, daikon, and cilantro. They called it a spicy lobster soup but it was mostly white pepper taste that I could tell. Much different experience having lobster this way instead of the usual boiling...
Much of the rest of the meal was secondary to me and inconsequential, it's just that I know what I came for. The sashimi is good quality but not best quality. They hit you with the banchan right away so you can get started on the salad. For a while, they kept coming with more and more dishes that we were quickly inundated with things to try. As I think back we got quite a lot of food for (only) $100...
I would give Man Sun a five star rating but the service was a little uneven, lazy even at times about busing and cleaning tables like a few reviewers had mentioned. We had a short wait for our table initially. We were treated mostly with courtesy but at times they would forget themselves and engage in stuff that you would not expect to see, like the waiter helping himself to uneaten sushi (not ours) that was left behind. I'm not naive, this goes on in every kitchen, but for crying out loud don't do it where I can see you do it...
Still I would return and bring a couple of friends that I know who like uni. I might even come back for lunch where I read you can get an uni bowl for $15... read more
