Frittata , aperol spritz, French toast in the background

Visited Manny's Bistro during a busy morning on UWS after the Maybelline Women's Half Marathon in Central Park but this hungry runner was seated immediately! Our waitress was courteous and efficient in giving us our drinks and throughout our stay. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We were made comfortable with plenty of space (feels like a rarity in NYC restaurants).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We were started with mini croissants with strawberry jam and these were honestly the hit of the meal. They were flaky and doughy at the same time - delicious and would have eaten an entire basket full! Was slightly disappointed by my frittata - was just kind of plain and thought there would have been more to it for the price. Our table also split the French toast - very well cooked and was sweet but not too sweet. A solid, underrated brunch spot. Would want to try more egg dishes to see if the frittata was a one off.

This place is usually full with customers, especially when they have music. After many years decided to visit; wish I did not. The portions, quality, service, do not come close to the prices. Rarely have I ever thought about how disappointed I was the next day nor has my partner, that was the first thing we thought about in the morning. we got the escargot to start, flavor wise it could have used some garlic and was not even close to the mussels at la grand boucherie. The seafood pasta portion, I've zoomed in was laughable, flavor wise it was like store bought pasta dressed with olive oil and small pieces of seafood. We ordered the lava cake since they ran out of the apple tart which we only informed of afterwards, and if chili's/applebee's manage to not screw it up, I don't know how the place did. It was over cooked, tasted like a muffin, so small. Our sever disappeared that we couldn't even say anything and it took forever to get the check. Overall, my assumption is that this a local place, frequented by Tony Danna, that people just want to go to for convenience. But, I would hop on a subway train instead or explore other French places in the 80's. A $300 bill for something that was not even 1/4 that worth and the fact that I rarely ever finish my meal and here not only did I, but I was still hungry.

First of all, I dine out most nights and rarely post except a star review on where I book -- unless something happens that is very different than what comes across in reviews. We decided on this restaurant because my friend who lives in the neighborhood DID have a good experience once before and I was coming up from downtown for dinner. Our dinner was beyond less so. Why? (1) Order was wrong (we ordered a filet, they brought hanger steak; waiter said I thought you said 'en le' i was like what is that -- he said that is hangar steak in french and I said did I speak any pretentious french before that ok I did not say pretentious but why would someone say ONE word in french? I said you should repeat orders back to people so they know they are heard, a lot of waiters do that. Unbelievable! Were they trying to take advantage of diners who did not speak french because they did not have much filet I literally cannot think of another reason since words are close and one is more expensive. (2) They took the hangar steak back and returned with a filet -- which we asked for 'medium' -- most of the steak was RAW. I showed the waiter and asked him to show the chef because I know lodging a complaint without evidence is a job hazard but it turned out doing so WITH evidence is more so -- and I was NOT returning the steak -- it was enough to eat the outer edge which I had done so it was obvious but 2/3 of steak was left --but instead HE SENT A WAITER TO PICK IT UP WHO BROUGHT US A DOGGY BAG WITH THE STEAK! Cannot make this up. When I explained this to him he said oh I thought you said don't tell the chef (and of course did not acknowledge why I would want to take said offense home...nor did he repeat his wishful response back to us). (3) our cocktails did not arrive until AFTER the salad service was almost or was cleared -- don't remember exact timing but we had finished salad. My friend was a long time server at a VERY busy west side restaurant a few blocks south back 'in the day' and had seen MUCH busier times (as I said when we told the waiter he should repeat orders back to diners especially when there is music he said 'it's very busy - it was NOT see photo -- though there were people listening to music from street and they had one large family party eating that left before we did -- and he said DON'T TELL ME HOW TO DO MY JOB when I said please repeat back to people -- they feel heard -- obviously he had a different experience. I still left a 33% tip but I have not left such a low tip -- NEVER less than 100% -- IN YEARS -- I know it is hard work but this low level of service at the early hour of 5:30 should be noted. And yes, the owner was there he went up with the band to say something.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Live the food, the atmosphere and especially Sunday afternoon with live music.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The mussels are always great! Today also had onion soup and endive salad. Both great. Best place on the UWS!

I've been a frequent visitor here for a few years, and I can't believe it took me this long to write them a glowing review! [[HIGHLIGHT]]I love it so much I've spent a few new years here and it's the spot I come to for a relaxed visit when someone is visiting the UWS.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's that versatile, that lovely.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Every item I've ordered is delish from the coq a vin to moules to steak a poivre-- you can't miss. Tonight my dad was in town and running late. Naomi poured me a delightful paper plane at there petite bar while I waited. I haven't ordered yet today, but I already know I'll be pleased!

The food quality is 5 star here, very well cooked and the sauces were outstanding which is key for good French restaurants. We really enjoyed the salmon and Brussel sprouts, and the filet mignon with cheese potato. This was a 4 star experience though because we ordered takeout and when we got there the older waitress at the bar was really rude and insisted we didn't place an order when I offered to show her my phone. She claimed she couldn't check the computer and made us wait for the manager who then was nice but said we had to wait 40 more min for our food. It's also pretty expensive, though the food is good.

Was slightly nervous given the mixed bag of reviews but our first experience dining with Manny's Bistro turned out to be a pleasant one. I called ahead and was told it was okay to walk in without a reservation. Interior is a classic bistro. Our party was dressed for a day in Central Park but no one batted an eye. Our server was William and it's because of him that we had a five star experience. He was attentive, gracious, and patient with my young kids. He knew the menu and ingredients well. My oldest child has a lot of food allergies. Her favorite food is duck so she had the duck breast. She wound up feeling off after eating a few bites of the duck and decided to stop eating. I gave her some allergy medicine and began monitoring her closely. I brought this up with William. He apologized profusely and said the dish had none of her allergens. I believe that there wasn't an allergen ingredient because of the way she reacted mildly. It seems as if something contaminated with an allergen touched her food, perhaps a contaminated utensil or pot. I appreciate the way William handled everything. He insisted on taking the dish off of our bill and took away the duck immediately. She's been mocked and stared at by staff at other restaurants in the past when she had a reaction so the way William treated her with so much dignity was heartwarming. The foie gras appetizer was delicious and perfect. My next favorite dish would actually be my daughter's duck breast. It was cooked so well and the flavor was great. The rest fell under solid, standard French fare.

After Tavern on the Green, H and I decided to find dinner in the relative wilds (to us, both denizens of the UES) of the Upper West Side. We ended up at Manny's Bistro, and had both a lovely experience and a wonderful dinner! We were greeting by a charming host, seated in the outside enclosure, and Caesar took great care of us all through dinner. Manny's is a traditional French bistro that does the staples very well. We had soupe à l'oignon to start, escargot, and then steak frites. The French onion soup was very, very good! Plenty of deliciously browned, gooey, yummy Gruyère cheese. The escargot were garlicky, buttery, and perfect. The bread was crusty and served with both French butter and pâte. The steak (medium rare) was perfectly cooked and seasoned, if a bit gristly. I was surprised by the gristle. The frites were REALLY good. Crispy and flavorful. We did not have room for dessert, but wish that we had.

If you're looking for a place that is Classic French on the upper west, look no further. The food and decor takes you to a small dark cafe in Paris, and for a moment your can pretend your somewhere else. The bread is a classic French loaf, hard and crunchy in the outside soft on the inside, served with soft salty butter and a chicken liver patet. The clams, with white wine and garlic sauce, were delicious. A perfect sized appetizer. The duck was the highlight, truly. Tender and melting in your mouth. The hanger stake was also delicious, with a perfectly salted red wine and shallot sauce. Both classics, done well. Will definitely go back to try the crème brûlée!

The RW menu was nice and well worth it, but as for me, I saw something else that I would rather have than the choices on the RW menu. I decided to go with the duck confit, but I did not read the menu thoroughly to see what side it came with. When it came out I saw it was with Flageolet bean Ragout which unfortunately I cannot eat, so I had to let Anna our server know. I was hoping she would keep the duck and just replace the side, but it looked like they made a completely new order, what service. My wife and son both ordered from RW menu and chose the boeuf bourgigninon which was so delicious, very tender beef and smooth mashed potatoes. We decided to also order escargot and French onion soup. Our service was just amazing from Anna our main server and the support servers who brought out our orders and to those who made sure our glasses were never empty. Of course the prefixe dessert was also delicious. Just super happy we learned that it was restaurant week and that we were able to experience it.

Oh, what a delight to stumble upon Marseille on a rainy day!…read more We stumbled into Marseille completely by chance. We were actually going to a different restaurant but the rain came down so hard, we needed to go somewhere closer. I want to come back and have a true meal here! (Apparently they do a discounted steak frites and that is my love language.) The staff very kindly accommodated us even thought we didn't have a reservation (we were only two). Everything in Marseille is done with a purpose. The waiters are all dressed in the same charming uniform. The cocktails are crafted with certain flavor profiles in mind. The menu is there to whisk you away to a little, remote village in France - except, you're on 9th Avenue in New York City and the street is littered with pushy walkers and....well, you get the drill. Anyway. Marseille begins the meal with the most excellent bread service. A fresh, hot sourdough roll is placed upon your table, along with herbed butter and oil. I could make a meal out of that bread alone. My cousin and I split the mushroom ravioli as an appetizer - a little salty, but excellent. The flavors were very well balanced and six was a good number for a dinner portion. We actually opted for the French onion soup as out main, and it was probably the best French onion soup we've ever had. There was also so much, we could not finish it. My Francais G&T was unbelievably good and came with a cornichon. Actually, shout out to our busser (I wish I got his name!) who accidentally took my drink-pickle away and had the waiter bring over more to make up for it. It was such a kind gesture and he deserves to be awarded for his attention to detail. (The wait staff overall was excellent. Kudos to the tall waiter with the snake ring and the shorter waitress with the great eyebrows. Again, I wish I got their names!) Oh, and as a bonus - they gave us some incredible truffles as a parting gift because we didn't stay for dessert. Like I said - the attention to detail here is on point! Overall, this is a fabulous spot. I would love to try brunch here!

I especially recommend the heirloom tomato salad--it was the perfect balance to all the richer appetizers. For my main, I ordered the duck à l'orange. The plating was beautiful, and they even brought some fire into the presentation (the only picture I managed to take ). The duck was cooked to perfection--juicy, tender, and full of flavor. The parsnips were okay, although I wasn't a huge fan of the pairing with the duck. We ended the night with a dessert recommended by our waiter. It was some sort of cloudy foam with candy on top. My one small gripe: I got charged for two lemonades, which stung a little given that (a) it's lemonade, and (b) the glass was on the petite side to begin with. Minor quibble, though. Other than that, it was a perfect NYC lunch, exactly what I was hoping for.

Came here a mere week after five-star my first visit, and this experience was significantly less…read morepositive. While the French Onion soup was still a stand-out dish, the painfully slow service detracted. There appeared to be a single waitress working. I didn't notice during my first visit if there were multiple servers, but the first time I did hear the waiter advise another table that the kitchen was behind and there would be a wait for food. (This didn't affect me since on my first visit I only ordered soup.) Same thing happened this time, and there was a significant delay between our soup/salad course and entrees. We were told the kitchen was backed up. this is apparently the norm. For appetizers, the French onion soup was a gold star dish. My friend had the goat cheese salad which she said was also very good. The Chicken Cordon Bleu was good, and a hard-to-find dish in NYC. While eating our entrees, the server never checked on how things were or if we needed anything. Once finished, we sat there for a long time waiting for our plates to be cleared, and finally had to "announce" that we were done and request our dessert (as we had ordered the prix fixe menu). For dessert we ordered the Dame Blanche and Profiteroles. I would recommend neither. The ice cream (in both) was poor quality, crystallized and not creamy. A real shame. In all, the meal too 2.5 hours due to the slow service. The soup remains fantastic. I'm downgrading my review to recommend this spot only for soup and salad and not a full, hours-long meal. For that, it's 5 stars, for a full meal a middling 3.
