We went on a weekday and it happened to be completely empty, so we had the whole restaurant to ourselves. It made for a really calm, intimate dining experience, which I actually loved. The food was solid--everything we had was flavorful and well-prepared. The calamari stood out as a great appetizer, crispy and delicious. Service was excellent as well, very attentive (probably helped that we were the only ones there). We always order dessert no matter where we go, and the cheesecake did not disappoint--definitely a great way to end the meal. Overall, this place feels like a little hidden gem in the neighborhood. I'd definitely come back again.

We practically live there, dining there at least once a week. The staff are friendly and helpful, the dining room has a vibe, and the food -- Aeolian island fresh pasta, marvelous sauces, great fish and meat dishes -- and wine are terrific. Note that Gennaro does not take reservations or (for the most part) credit cards. Prices are quite reasonable for the quality of the meals.

The hostess wasn't thrilled to seat us since we said we were just getting a drink, but since it wasn't crowded we were lucky enough to get one of the few patio tables. These restaurants have always been welcoming, casual, decently priced, serving classic French bistro or brasserie cuisine. Recently, my wife and I had reservations here for an early dinner after seeing an exhibit nearby, and the gorgeous weather invited us to sit outside. Service was professional. The well-made Lillet rouge Spritz and Hugo Spritz set up the usual high expectations. The arugula salad with citrus sections was absolutely fresh, and the dressing complemented the whole. We settled in for a typical solid meal. Which we were not to get. My bouillabaisse looked great, with plenty of shellfish, plump sections of fish, and a goodly amount of shrimp, with a fat crouton smeared with saffron aioli. My wife's Duck confit looked good as well, with roasted fingerling potatoes. Classic stuff. All good, until I started eating. The bouillabaisse desperately needed seasoning. I took the top off the salt shaker to pour out small piles of salt into my palm, to sprinkle around the bowl. Three then four times. My wife added a pinch more as well. And lots of pepper. The fish, not monkfish but softer cod, was well cooked, as were the mussels, clams, potatoes, and shrimp. No problems with that. But the broth lacked depth of flavor. Frankly, I was shocked. The Confit was better, but still needed salt. Only a small part of the skin kept any crispness, but that might be the style--this leg was coated in a brown sauce, which would make limp any skin crisped during reheating. My preferences, perhaps. My wife has gone here before and liked it. But this day, the main courses underwhelmed. This is the first of dozens of meals from the restaurants we have not enjoyed. Perhaps it was an off day? Or a prep cook forgot to add salt? At least the Petite Chablis I had by the carafe--1.5 glasses--was good, and the right amount. I wouldn't have gotten it if the waiter hadn't pointed that option out. I doff my hat at him.

We visited Osteria Cotta, a cozy two-story neighborhood Italian restaurant with a large outdoor patio in front. There was plenty of space for everyone, and I wasn't the only pup there--there were several other dogs enjoying dinner with their families. The humans who worked there were incredibly nice and spent a lot of time telling me how handsome I am. (It's important to surround yourself with honest people.) Mom ordered the Tartufo pizza with mushrooms and prosciutto, along with a non-alcoholic rosé. Dad ordered the Penne Pomodoro with a glass of red wine and somehow found room for an espresso martini after dinner. I ordered... ...absolutely nothing. There isn't a dog menu, and no water bowl was offered, so I'd recommend bringing your own water if you're visiting with your pup. Even though I didn't receive the pizza crust I had mentally budgeted for, the atmosphere was relaxed, the patio was spacious, and everyone made me feel welcome. It's a great place if you want a nice Italian dinner without leaving your best friend at home. Dogba's Verdict Big outdoor patio? Plenty of fellow dogs? Staff who immediately loved me? Wine is smooth, not too strong Lasagna a nice portion served on a cast iron skillet. The lasagne has a great tomato sauce that is smooth with a hint of sweetness I order a second glass of wine taking my time to savor everything. At the end I ask for the check which my waitress brings over. $56! Gee I look and the glass of wine isn't $8 they're $13 a glass! I motion to the waitress and point out the mistake. She explains she made a mistake. She brought me the more expensive pino because she forgot the house was a different wine. I decide not to make an issue of it. But wonder how many other people unsuspectingly have the same switcharoo, and just reflexively pay? I'm a bit disappointed and not happy about this. I think gee this is why people aren't going out? It comes the same week my other Brooklyn restaurant was an overpriced disappointment. Both times beverage, liquor or wine based. So I can't let this pass on Yelp here.
