This restaurant is absolutely beautiful with hand painted walls in a gorgeous green motif and stunning ceilings. My caesar salad was incredibly high-quality with anchovies and a homemade dressing. The warm bread included fluffy, slightly sweet rolls with a decadent butter. Between the chicken milanese and arctic char, I'd recommend the delicate, flavorful char. The hostess was incredibly accommodating as we did not make a reservation prior to entering the Frick, but we did make one an hour and a half in advance (upon entering the museum) for 4:30pm. I was informed that they don't take reservations in advance and we should make them right after gaining admission to the Frick Collection (for which we did have advance reservations). We arrived at 11:00 A.M. and felt lucky to get a12:30 P.M. for the four of us. So we spent about 90 minutes on the first floor of the mansion before going up to the Westmoreland. We had to wait until 12:55 to be seated. It's a relatively small, but pretty dining room where tables for two wait a lot less than foursomes. We had been to the Frick decades before, when, as I recall, there was only one floor of exhibits. The mansion now, after extensive refurbishing, not only has exhibits on the second floor, but also the Westmoreland Café (a photo of which is available at Frick.Org). The cuisine at the Westmoreland doesn't rise to the level of the fourth-floor Met Dining Room, but it's focus, judging by their menu, is cocktails, wines, a hand full of beers I never heard of, and dessert drinks. That said, and despite a dearth of attractive entrées, I enjoyed my panko-crusted chicken breast. However its accompanying "salad" was just a handful of arugula with a lemony aioli (mostly mayo). My buddy had a decent turkey sandwich, but the side of homemade potato chips were too hard, even though they were tasty. So, it's a mixed bag. As others have noted, the Westmoreland is pricey, but that's to be expected on 5th Avenue and 70th Street in a mansion with numerous recognizable museum quality masterpieces. We got to the Frick collection late in the afternoon and wanted to grab a bite as we visited the exhibit.The service was fine and the atmosphere was what you would expect for a museum. I ordered the chicken soup and it was tasty with the inventive adition of saffron and some type of couscous type grain. Snooty, slow, stuffy and inattentive. Those are my lasting impressions of the Westmoreland Cafe. And oh yes... expensive! While I was touring the renovated Frick museum (which, by the way, is incredible), I decided to drop by the Frick's Westmoreland Cafe for a cup of coffee and light snack. I was alone at the time. The hostess sat me at a nice, corner table where I had a view of the entire dining room. The Westmoreland is a very pretty space, nicely appointed and oozing with charm. I was happy to be there. I noticed multiple servers milling around and chatting amongst themselves. Several servers walked right past my table, but nobody bothered to greet me, offer me water, or take my order. After waiting for approximately eight minutes for someone to stop by, I finally asked the hostess what it would take to get service. She appeared shocked and embarrassed and quickly went to find a server to take my order. That did the trick; a man came by within a minute. I ordered a drip coffee ($8 for a six-ounce cup of coffee) and a cheese platter ($23). Both were excellent. When I almost finished eating my food, I asked the waiter for a top-off of my coffee. He replied brusquely that they don't offer free refills; if I wanted more coffee, I would have to pay for another cup. (Another $8!) Mind you, we're talking DRIP coffee, as in coffee served out of a huge urn. I was not asking for a second espresso beverage or a glass of wine. Just coffee. After my server left my table, I sat there pondering why / how they could be such cheapskates. Another server saw me looking displeased and stopped to ask if there was a problem. Yes, I said, and explained the coffee situation. She said she would go talk to her manager. Soon, the manager came to my table and asked what my problem was. I explained that I wanted a top-off of my coffee. He reiterated that their policy is to charge the customer for a coffee refill. I was still shocked and told him I thought that was really crummy service and showed a complete disrespect for their customers. He got very defensive and repeated that that was their policy. He offered, as a one-time courtesy, to give more coffee. I told him I would get my second coffee elsewhere, thank you. I asked for my bill. The server who originally served me handed me my check and said they had removed the coffee from my bill. That was a nice gesture, but really missed the point. Coffee is one of those high-markup items on a menu. It costs the restaurant next to nothing to offer a coffee refill, and it goes a long way towards making the customer feel appreciated and valued. Instead, this somewhat snooty manager and the server left me feeling exactly the opposite. Am I being petty about this? Yes, probably a bit petty. But it's more the point that it takes very little to do something nice to make a customer feel valued. These people just didn't get it. read more

The ultimate ladies who lunch affair. Think dainty portions, extremely pricey.. well, prices. Inside The Frick, every option is visually pleasing and tasty but if you're going there to fill up, think again. I've been twice, the second time I got the mushroom risotto and it was oddly somewhat filling! They also have rose' tea which is non alcoholic while giving you the appearance of looking like you are drinking wine for lunch. But if you want a special drink without having alcohol it is a good choice. Their menu changes with the seasons. I enjoyed their apple tart with mascarpone as well. Everyone is really friendly and hospitality forward. Shout out to the hosts, they do a great job. read more

Naming the museum café after Frick's luxurious private railcar seems to reflect an aspiration - even if expressed in a far more modest form than Frick himself might have known - toward a distinctly high-class museum dining experience (much less upscale than the full-scale restaurant Modern adjacent to the MOMA). This polished, civilized museum café is a natural companion to the magnificent Frick Collection museum. The setting is unmistakably upscale, the food is top quality and prepared with finesse, and the portions are small but beautifully plated - in the best possible sense. The classic service is outstanding, delivered by a highly intelligent, elegantly dressed team who give the impression that they may be in the midst of PhD dissertations in art history (specializing or aspiring to specialize in fields such as the Northern Renaissance...). It is a high-class café (not too-high) in the best sense, a natural habitat for real art-loving, nicely put-together, sometimes exotic, New York ladies, occasionally accompanied by their non-exotic companions in the form of retired husbands, as real, even miniature, pets are almost certainly not permitted. For the record, we had superb gnocchi, top-quality poached Arctic char, and an outstanding salad, followed by excellent chocolate mousse and coffee that was serviceable but unremarkable. If a $100-plus light lunch for two feels like an indulgence rather than a burden, this café is well worth the experience, even more so after the profound pleasure of taking in the beauty of the building's interiors and spending time with masterpieces such as Rembrandt's The Polish Rider, along with the Vermeers, the Turners, and the many other treasures housed in this remarkable space. read more

Had a reservation for lunch at the Westmoreland after strolling through the Frick collection. Unfortunately, we had to wait 45 minutes to get seated. I understand that the museum gets busy, but the staff kept saying we'd be seated in a "moment" and that was only after we asked when our table would be ready. I do not recommend coming here after browsing the museum as they will not honor your reservation. Also their menu is incredibly limited. read more

This is a brand new cafe inside the Frick Collection museum. Everything was very good; service was prompt, friendly and efficient. Bar drinks were good and the food was well above average at reasonable prices. The menu wasn't extensive but a good range of selections. This is from a tourist from the Napa Valley, where we are used to good food. read more

The food and service were good but as a person who has traveled extensively it is extremely overpriced given that the portions are VERY small. The grilled cheese with the soup was not even a half sandwich. Coffee was $10.00. I agree with another review the trout looked and tasted like salmon. Lovely cafe, but we ordered the Grilled Trout and received Salmon, which they tried to tell us was indeed Trout, tasted like Salmon, looked like Salmon and definitely not Trout. In any case the Mocktail was delicious, pomagranate, cinnamon and lemon, a home run. Croissant was sweet flaky and delicious, but $8???? crazy.
