I stumbled upon this place going to my dentist office and fell in love. I lived and worked on Capitol Hill for 15 years and discovered this place just last year. I wasn't sure at first because it looked a little deserted. I did like the cheese they put into G man. However. I think my expectations were a bit too high after reading the other rave reviews prior to visiting. I felt there was too much bread for the amount of stuff inside the actual sub. The highlight was the cheese, super strong cheese. Everything is cut very thinly is due the sandwich so it is never overflowing like sandwiches you would see on an ad. Barely anything inside the sandwich, perhaps get the double meat portion instead if you're looking for a more satisfying sub. Staff were very friendly, and they have been around forever! The Best Italian Sub in DC...Hands Down!! They have been around before I was born and I'm well into my late 30's! This is a DC institution in my eyes when it comes to family owned establishments. I've had their lunch subs many times, but due to my odd schedule today I was able to get a egg and cheese sub. Just tried the breakfast sub and it was truly excellent. I really loved the sweet peppers (recommended by one of the employees when I was calling my order in). The eggs were cooked perfectly, and it was hot and ready as soon as I got there. I was really upset because I have to cover for 2 missing guys in my 3 man department today, but getting this sub for breakfast makes today that much more bearable. read more

First time coming after walking by many times and it being closed (the only weekday lunch hours thing). Place was packed with ems/firefighters which I guess is where their business comes from (also judging by the massive number of badges on the wall). In a world of 12$ fast casual dining options it is refreshing to get a delicious high quality sandwich for 6.50. It completely dominates the subway around the block and makes me wonder why anyone would choose it if they knew this place existed. People at the counter were friendly. The best sandwich shop in S.E. Washington, DC. The bread and vegetables are always fresh. The people are so courteous there. I went and forgot my Credit Card and the guy at the register said: "It's okay you can bring it pass when you get it." My only complaint (and really, it isn't one) is that they pile the sandwiches SO HIGH that it is tough to manage the crusty bread without getting lock-jaw. My moms sub was supposed to have oil and vinegar and hot peppers. A staple right? No oil or vinegar or hots. This happened a few years ago when I went there and it turned me off for a while. Quite easily the best subs you'll find in the district. The "G" Man sub is a study in delicious and should be eaten "as is." Let the professionals decide what is good for you! If you are particularly hungry, the Big "G" is a "G" Man with extra meats. I especially like their hard rolls. The best way to enjoy a "G" may be to have some patience and let it sit for an hour or so. That way, the oils soak into the bread, softening it slightly and making it ever more delicious. The hours can be a challenge and the location isn't exactly primo, but it's well worth planning your day and your trip around DC to get one of these subs. read more

First of all, the nostalgia of the family owned small business makes me want to support them to the fullest, the fact that they make an absolutely amazing sandwich just makes it so much easier. That being said whether you are local, or a visitor to DC, you really want to see this piece of living history. The owner's family spans four generations of sandwich/sub-making, in DC and they still operate this place. Parking is street parking and seems to be prevalent and easy to find; the old Frager's location is close by and since it closed the whole side of the block seems to be easier to find. If you're a tourist or a metro rider, hop on the Orange/Blue line and go to the Potomac Avenue stop, and walk one block down Penn towards the Capitol building. Some of you who know DC may say woah, not really interested in making that trip, however its actually extremely safe -- this place is a favorite for Police, Fire, Rescue, and almost any uniformed officer. I have never been there when a police officer wasn't present or hanging out waiting for their order. I will tell you that there is absolutely no seating in the restaurant, walk in or call, place your order and be ready to take out. Now for the information you are all wanting, the sandwiches. I have always been a fan of the G-Man, on a hard roll with all the fixins except the tomatoes. The person I was with on this visit got a loaded G-Man and it was hard to imagine that this sandwich got bigger but it definitely is when fully loaded. We could have shared one but instead opted to eat our own and I couldn't finish mine and she could only finish by eating it open faced. The G-Man hits the spot when I want a sub, well prepared, large, flavorful and satisfying. In fact that was the only thing I had to eat that day, and I was full till around time for a late evening snack. An update to some previous reviews on this and other sites, they are no longer cash only, thet accept Visa and Mastercard as well as cash. Lastly, as yelpers are always wondering, the cost for this amazing sandwich and some drinks are not expensive, as in a HUGE sandwich, plus, chips and a drink will run under $10. My boyfriend and I were looking for a quick bite around 10am and this place popped up with glowing reviews. We escaped the heat and cooled down inside. We thought there would be seating, but it's just take out. No biggie though. We were greeted by two gentlemen who offered us a menu. I told one gentleman that it was our first time and he recommended the G-Man. My boyfriend ordered the G-Man cold with soft bread and hot peppers. I got the same thing except I wanted mine warmed. We waited and read the newspaper clippings on the walls. It's awesome that a mom and pop shop like this is still exists. This place was the real deal. Several people came in after us and I eavesdropped on their orders. 5 out of 6 people that came in after us ordered the G-Man (the 6th ordered turkey). I think we made the right choice. We got back to the car and unwrapped our sandwiches. My boyfriend took a bite out of his and his eyes lit up. I opened mine and took a bite. Yep, it was really good. So many meats and fresh veggies, the bread was just right and the hot peppers and oregano gave it a nice spice. If you want a real Italian sandwich, come here. It's the best. read more
