This is a neat little store that has been around for many years. In fact, an elder Mangialardo has been interviewed in an oral history project about the area. we went here on a friday afternoon and yeah, lined up behind construction workers, emts, cops, and firemen. On one of the walls is a board decorated with all types of service-people patches. To be fair, there were also regular folks from the neighborhood and hill staffers. You place your order and get a ticket. Then you find a place to wait till your number is called. Last, you pay at the register (cash only) and go find a place to eat. As another reviewer states, there isn't a description of the all sandwiches listed on the board, which is a bit unfortunate. There is one called a "G-Man" as well as a Super Sub. Those are the way to go. It is your choice between hard or soft bread. My vote is the hard. On my first visit, i ordered a turkey and cheese sub on a hard roll, and then selected preferences for cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, hot or mild peppers, mayo and mustard. maybe something else, too. My companion chose the G-Man, which is a variety of italian meats. It was tasty, and superior to my turkey sandwich. The G-Man easily serves two, it's huge. the store sells chips and drinks to go with your sub if you are so inclined. There was a handwritten sign saying "italian bread, $2.50". This deli offers a few warm sandwiches and spaghetti and meatballs, and also serves breakfast on the weekday. One of the intriguing breakfast items is the pepperoni omelet. it would be wonderful if it was open on the weekend! i do recommend a visit. read more

I am shocked that I haven't reviewed Mangialardo's yet! I have them listed in my contacts and depending on who answers the phone in the morning, they know me by my order :). Turkey, egg and cheese on a kaiser roll. It's ridiculously good and a perfect breakfast treat. The lunch sandwiches are great with a variety of options, but I prefer breakfast sandos from this local gem. Please note that they ONLY take cash so bring some. ATM is located at a gas station 2 blocks away, if necessary. Some mornings, the place is packed (especially before 9am). And they're only open for breakfast and lunch, but worth the trip, trust me and enjoy! read more

I'm not a big cold cut sandwich fan. So when I say that the "G" Man is delicious, you should know I do not say it lightly. Philly folks are real snobs about their hoagies, but I promise they won't be disappointed if they give Mangialardo's a try. You know it from first sniff. In the words of my husband, this place is solid. It's been some time since I've branched out from my go-to, the G-Man, and that's because it's so dang delicious. Sooooo dang delicious. And I'm writing this review at a time when I'm (temporarily) dairy-free, meaning this sub is the shiznit even without cheese. My recommendation is to go all in, hot peppers (aka "special sauce" in my book) included. I prefer the soft roll, mainly because I hate to have my mouth torn up with a hard roll, not to mention that it just tastes so stinkin' good. The balance is perfect. I've tried taking off a slice of meat here and there when I think I might be just a bit too stuffed to eat the whole thing, and it throws the balance. What they have created, it's perfection. Staff has always been friendly. When we placed an order for one no cheese (and I mentioned my dairy allergy) they made a point to mark on the sub not only they type but also that it was the one that was dairy-free -- just to be clear, you know? Because they are good peeps like that. The others sandwiches are spot on as well -- we've had the turkey, the meatball, the tuna salad. But once we had the G-Man, we never looked back. The sandwiches are HUGE, and the price is quite decent by DC standards. They offer two bread options. I ordered my sandwich with soft bread, and it was delicious. I don't know what their hard bread option is, but I'm thinking it might be more like a baguette; hard/crunchy on the outside, but soft on the inside. They have several different sandwiches, so you should be able to find something appealing. Take a few minutes to peruse the old pics that line the wall for a brief history of the place. This place is all it's cracked up to be, that's for sure. For those of you who are disappointed that there isn't a bunch of tables and a huge menu, you clearly don't get it. The sign of an authentic Italian sandwich shop isn't glitz and conveniences, its when you have a sneaking suspicion there is an underground card game going on in the back. This place looks straight out of the opening scene of "Casino." Really, that is the best way I can think to describe it. They help is friendly, they have all the selection you could rightfully want and the quality is excellent. Granted, the reason it gets 4 stars instead of 5 is because I have been to a few better places (see Lioni's in Brooklyn), but for DC this is about as good as it gets. I had my first Italian hoagie in NJ at Carmen's Deli and it was heavenly. This did not remind me of that experience. The ingredients are average quality. I ordered the G Man and a regular cold cut. Unfortunately it really didn't stand out to me. I also didn't like the bread (soft or the hard). Not bad but not especially good. It doesn't get any better than this. There aren't many places like this left in DC, let alone anywhere these days, but this little shop is a true original. No gimmicks, no exorbitant prices, just great subs. It's one thing to find a place with a twinkle of character left in a sea of Subways and Chipotles. It's quite another if the food is great, and it is absolutely great at Mangialardo's. For an incredible six bucks, you get a huge sub piled high with fresh Italian meats and cheese. Simple, elegant, great. There isn't a better Italian sandwich in DC, and there isn't a better price for lunch in the whole city. The only drawback is that's kind of a pain in the neck to get there: you either take Metro to Potomac which is right there, or you walk from around Eastern Market/Capitol Hill (10-15 minutes), which can be tough in the middle of summer. I thought the sub could have been a tad bit bigger, however the sub I had tasted amazing. I got a tuna sub with lettuce, tomato, and mayo on a soft roll. The tuna tasted very fresh like they prepared it that same day. It had the right amount of pepper and mayo. Kudos to them for keeping it fresh. It took about 10 minutes for me to receive my order, but that's fine because I know a slow process means they're making the food with love and they're not just slapping some garbage together. They also have a wide variety of bottled drinks to choose from and some chips to go along with your sub. Best subs in DC - without question. Anyone who disagrees has bad taste buds and can go back to Potbelly's and Subway. I'm basing my review on it's similar style to subs back home in Central Jersey. They put adequate meat on the sub (that is freshly cut while your sandwich is prepared) and the no frills attitude is refreshing for all the fancy places in DC. So you've thought you've had the best italian sub ever, try the G-Man before you cast your final ballot. I prefer the soft roll for mine but that is the individuals choice. They have just the right blend of meats and cheeses and the dressing is outstanding. I picked up some for clients in the area one time, now they demand them whenever I come and visit---don't mind though, their subs are worth sharing. Went for the gman....also nabbed the hot beef and pastrami....both solid options but not worth the legendary status. Mind you...I don't believe (unlike a good cheesesteak or.meatball) that a good Italian is that hard to replicate I will get slayed here but outside if the wicked hard roll the g was a slight step above the excellent jersey Mike's one. I don't get the impression that you can pay until you have received your order which makes being in the shop longer than it needs to be, but when I came last Friday: 1.) I was impressed they announced they were open regular hours on Facebook since many federal agencies had the day off and it felt like other businesses adjust for that. 2.) The girl taking my order got it right on the first try, as somewhat complicated as it was: 4 G-Mans: 1 hard roll with hot peppers, 1 hard roll with mild peppers, 1 soft roll with hot peppers, and 1 soft roll with mild peppers. All had lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and oil and vinegar. Thankfully, I had backup options for breakfast as there was a sign last Friday that said they would not be doing breakfast (presumably for that day, not forever). I noticed that breakfast prices were about a quarter more than on the website. A bunch of apparently familiar faces stopped in to place orders, and I would say they were all out of there in less than 5 minutes. I was out in 15 ish because of all the sandwiches I ordered. I counted 10 people working around 8 am so next time, I will heed the suggestions of Yelpers and call ahead. Round trip to Capitol Hill and my place for some sandwiches was almost an hour because I couldn't time the buses well. I imagine lining up and waiting to be chaotic but since it was a light day, I am glad my first time was last week. As for the sandwiches, all the combos were good. Depending on my mood, I could easily vacillate between hard or soft rolls, hot or mild peppers. It does help to let the cold cuts, bread, and veggies marinate in the oil and vinegar. Surprisingly, mom and sis thought this was one of the better meals on their recent trip that included more expensive, fancy places. This review is based on the two times I went to Mangialardo and Sons, and the sandwiches I had. The first time was a big disappointment. Turkey is not a specialty here. The lettuce was limp and I was left wanting a real NY style deli. My second visit, a few days ago, I ordered the G-Man, and they do an Italian sub well. I was surprised that they will put mustard and mayo along with the oil, vinegar, and spices, but it worked pretty well in their favor. I'll still take Taylor's over the Lardo, but Lardo's is closer to work, so I may treat myself to these a bit more often while the weather is nice and I can enjoy the outside. read more

Who needs flair and posh surroundings when you have a G-man sub (the roast beef and pizza subs are tasty , too) and some utz potato chips. Make sure to bring cash (no credit cards or checks), and if you've got a large group, consider faxing your order in ahead of time. The G-man! Is there any other? Well, there is the Super G, and if you order that, you have made a terrible mistake. The G-man is the way to go. Get the peppers that they offer.
