This is a great little place - probably the oldest of old school barracks row establishments. It's been 20 years since I've eaten here. After a bunch of times saying "we should go back to trattoria Alberto" we stopped by today we arrived about 1230 on a Monday and the streets were empty. We were seated immediately. Bread and water were complimentary, and the bread came with whipped butter, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar. My wife had the chicken piccata and I had the chicken Parmesan. Both meals were tasty and super fresh. The service was the star of the show today. If you're looking for something different on 8th street check it out! read more

I've been going to Albertos for years and it's easily in my top 3 Italian restaurants in DC. The service is always fantastic, delicious food, and generous portions. My favorite dish is the chicken piccata with pistachio cake for dessert. The dining room is nice and reservations aren't required to get a seat. These dishes also travel well if ordered for pickup/delivery. read more

Trattoria Alberto was recommend by friends who have lived on the Hill for over 3 decades. We met for dinner and enjoyed a meal together. They recommended the Avocado salad to start. It was delicious. The avocado was pleasantly soft and ripe. The dressing wasn't over bearing and just the right amount. What a nice start to a meal. The menu is extensive - I wasn't sure if I should I order pasta or a protein that's served with pasta. I decided on Chicken piccata with gluten free pasta. They offer gluten free variations and vegetarian dishes. The chicken piccata was cooked perfectly. The only issue was the side of pasta. It wasn't served with gluten free pasta. However, the server quickly noticed and replaced it. I didn't have to ask. He knew and fixed it. The service it great at Trattoria Alberto and so is their at home feeling when dining. Food is good. Drinks are a step up. The service is what really brings us back. The staff makes you feel welcome and part of the family.

Had the paella. Very good. Good food and wine recommendations from the waiter. Also had calamari which was good.

I really wanted to give this place four stars for the level of service provided from beginning to end, but I just couldn't bring myself to it based on the cost. The night we stopped in we decided to sit outside since given a choice and they do have covers and heaters for the remaining cool Spring evenings. They have an extensive beverage menu, so you won't have difficultly selecting a wine or drink choice via the bar. The menu has a wide range of Italian dishes to choose from as well as traditional salads and antipasti. The food was above average and no one was disappointed with any item ordered and I was satisfied with my chicken parmesan dish. Four stars for the quality and portions of food, but as I mentioned at the outset the value brings the overall rating down. The street the restaurant is on is highly competitive and would it be hard to justify coming back here based on the cost. read more

After being welcomed by friendly staff, all went down hill. The food was below average for the pretend Italian ambiance. We both ordered the house special, catch of the day with pasta and vegetables. We first received cold aged bread with cold butter and no oil for dipping. The fish was dry with a bland taste, and they forgot to add the sauce on the pasta. They brought the sauce 5 minutes later, and didn't offer a discount. Disappointing for the money paid. This place is over priced serving plain tasting meals. read more

Their version is very cream heavy, and the portion is quite large. I enjoyed it but did not find it to be a special dish. I love the ambiance of Trattoria Alberto so much. It feels like a hole in the wall Italian place that you would find in New York City. The service is good, and at Christmas, there were cute decorations. Traditional old-school Italian food on the Hill Good food, impeccable service, but a little pricey. You won't find nouveau-Italian cooking here but it's solid and checks all the boxes. The wine selection is just ok, and it's served in thick-rimmed glasses that could have come straight from your grandmother's china cabinet. Better glasses would be a good start. The crème brûlée for dessert was made in advance and pulled straight from the fridge. Pretty disappointing. Ambience is nice...small intimate dining rooms with brick walls. Carpets need a good cleaning though. read more

We were really excited to try out this place for my best friends birthday. We got there and our server was already rude and short, and acted as if he did not care in the slightest. We ordered our drinks and eventually our appetizer (when he did come over, which was like a total of 3 times and it was not busy). We ordered the antipasto meat and cheese board for two, and I was actually shocked at what came out. It was quite literally deli meats rolled up with deli sliced cheese and random vegetables. It was unlike anything I had ever seen at any Italian restaurant. Not to mention when sending it back our server was rude once again. When the table next to us came in our server read them specials, went over constantly, and ultimately gave them a great experience. He barely asked us what we wanted for dinner. The manager seemed to not care one bit about this either when we were so clearly unhappy. Not to mention, when seeing it was my friends birthday on her ID, they didn't say a word- and we saw them bring out dessert for another birthday, but this option, along with others, was not given to us. I rarely leave reviews but the food here was exceptionally terrible. The worst Italian food I've ever had. This food was so bad it hurt - my feelings and my stomach. You'll have better luck at olive garden. The garlic bread was a joke - wasn't even baked/crispy and just had garlic powder and some chopped garlic on it, the pasta with the chicken parmigiana was completely unseasoned like it went from pot to plate, the creme brûlée didn't have a hard sugar top and tasted like flan, and what was supposed to be fried calamari was completely chewy and unseasoned. Secured a table for eight and was supremely impressed with the food, service, and ambiance at Alberto. Everything from the strong martinis and mixed drinks to the calamari appetizers and main entrees was stupendous . I enjoyed the veal Marsala and found the meat quite tender and flavorful and the pasta was outstanding. The classy establishment is reasonably priced and all eight diners were throughly satisfied with dinner. Definitely a must for anyone in the Capitol Hill area. When I went to visit, I sat at the bar but there is a bunch of seating in the restaurant for couples, families, and even private events. I love the ambiance inside, it's dim lit with exposed brick which gives off a great vibe for a first date. They have a great wine selection and the owner is actually there to give recommendations as he works behind the bar. The experience for our small group from out of town was tremendous. This place was recommended to us, and the neighborhood and atmosphere were great. We chose to dine inside although the patio option was also inviting that day. I sat at the bar waiting for the rest of my party to arrive, and the barman was personable and friendly even when busy. The staff accommodated our small party without a reservation, and we sat in a prime spot in their dining room. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. They have been very helpful when selecting wine and don't make you feel like an idiot as some servers do! The bread is good, and I like the atmosphere. It's located in what feels like an old house converted into a restaurant. Once I was seated in the bottom level and it was really loud because of other patrons. But all of the other levels have been very enjoyable. Just be careful of one thing. The check in deal here on yelp only works on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday I believe. Even though it looks like it works on a Friday, once you get there and check in, it specifies the days. I was disappointed about that but now I know. I like their pastas! I really loved the attentiveness of my waiter, his pleasant attitude, and his ability to help me navigate the menu. I was very indecisive about my choice for dinner and he asked me to "trust him". I gave him my top three items of interest and then he chose which he thought was best. I was completely satisfied with the meal and blown away by every aspect. From the fresh pasta, sauce, and tender chicken. Everyone in my party moaned throughout their entire meal and verbally described how delicious it was.
