Very fancy Italian restaurant with creative dishes and great service. It's a huge place with different rooms of seating. We sat in a back, quiet room that allowed intimate conversation with background music. They had a creative cocktail list however I did not like the drinks I ordered- but take this from someone who loves girly sweet drinks. What we ordered: - Bison Gnocchi: 5/5, winner of the night. The meat was so tender and flavorful and the gnocchi was cooked very well - Burrata Al Tartuffo: 3/5, I did not think the sauce paired well with the burrata. They were kind of the same vibe so their flavors dimmed each other rather than complimenting. - Pasta con sugo: 4/5, excellent el dente pasta and a pretty good sauce, nothing stood out too much sauce or meat wise but the pasta was awesome. - Lobster Agnolotti Pasta: 5/5, this was not the tradition lobster ravioli I am used to eating- no creamy sauce but the 3 large ravioli were jammed FULL of lobster. There was no "fillers", it was literally just straight lobster which is so respectable. - Pasta el duet: 5/5, very contrasting pasta dishes that give you the best of both worlds, cooked el dente with great fillings.

We took a trip to Boston for my husbands birthday, it's our favorite city!! I had seen reviews for Mamma Maria, but when I tried to make a reservation, they were fully booked. We tried our luck by calling and inquiring if they happen to have any last minute cancellations or anything opened up, and to our surprise they said yes! I am still dreaming of the bison gnocchi! The place itself is a quaint little restaurant with such a "family dinner" vibe. I would definitely be planning ahead for next time we visit Boston so that we can score a table!

The Scarlet Vetter says....our lawyer group of about 90 folks booked the entire restaurant for a special dinner, having heard how wonderful the food and service is at this establishment. It did not disappoint! The service was friendly, accomodating and professional. The restaurant prepared a special menu with various choices for our consumption. Three choices for an appetizer including Oysters, Wagu Beef, and Wild Asparagus Ravioli, which was followed by a pear, almond and field greens salad dressed in a tarragon vinegarette. Yum! For my entree I chose the Cod in a Lobster Brodo with Mussels and Calamari. It was wonderful. I've included the menu in the pictures as it truly was a great and varied menu. Seasonal desserts rounded the dinner out. The sound management was not great, and it was difficult to hear my dining companions. This may have been because we're a group that knows each other well. With many of us having been together over 25 years, and therefore there was lots of conversation going on everywhere, and that may not be the case on a regular dining evening, where people are more insular. The bathrooms were very clean and comfortable. In all, an excellent culinary experience!

This is apparently the best Italian restaurant in Boston. I absolutely love the North End area and I was excited to try this place out. We came here after traversing around the city all day in the freezing cold. Granted it's a nice restaurant with white tablecloths and we did not exactly fit the bill. However, we still had a lovely dining experience. Our waiter was an Italian man who clearly knew more than us and I respect that. We split several things such as the fall salad, the bison, gnocchi, the Bolognese and the baked oysters. The pastas were very good. The oysters were a bit much and the salad was fine. We also split a very nice bottle of wine which wrapped up the meal nicely. Overall, everything was good and the meal was adequate . Is this the best pasta in Boston? I highly doubt it. I have had much better pasta in New York and Chicago. Granted, I am a harsh critic, and this is still a lovely dining experience.

I visited Boston for a week, and my favorite meal was here at Mamma Maria. I arrived on a Friday at 8:30pm as a party of 2 without a reservation. Many restaurants in the area stopped accepting tables for the night, as they were full. Mamma Maria was also quite packed, but they were able to accommodate us for a table outside. Service was above and beyond. It was a little chilly, so our server got us blankets. The menu changes daily, and I ended up ordering the Rabbit Pasta. This was the best pasta I've had in a long time - the texture was the literal definition of al dente. Everything about the meal felt like I was transported to Italy. Highly recommend this spot if you're in north end.

Prepare to be transported to Italy We were able to snag a table on a Saturday night after strolling around and being quoted 90 minute+ wait times at neighboring restaurants so a reservation is definitely recommended! From start to finish the meal was absolutely amazing, the freshest and most well balanced pasta dish I've had in the clam and crab pasta and their drinks were fantastic. The ambience was amazing, you truly feel like you're in the streets of Italy with the right weather and the service and staff were kind and attentive.

The food was delicious. My boyfriend and I dined here in celebration of his birthday on 8/8/25. He was sure to make reservations weeks in advance. We were seated in the back by windows at a table for 2. The ambiance was romantic, Sinatra and Italian music amd views of the passing people on tje street below. We had an appetizer, entrees, wine and desert from the kitchen for a birthday treat.

Great food and attentive service. We enjoyed all of our dishes and wine recommendations. It was a cold day, so we went for heartier choices like pasta con sugo, rabbit pasta and venison gnocchi. Of the three, pasta con sugo was the winner. I very much enjoyed carpaccio with truffle as well. It's an intimate setting in an old building (very close to the Paul Revere house), so if you are clusterphobic or don't like climbing narrow stairs, call to check the table situation first. We found it charming but could be challenging if we were to bring elderly parents or younger children. For the type of place it is and the service level it's striving for, I think our second bottle of sparkling water we didn't finish should have been comped. The bus boy or assistant server topped our glasses with flat water although they were 3/4 full with sparking water, so our waiter brought us a new bottle to replace spoiled glasses. Maybe the service was too attentive but not accurate. We were understanding and still tipped well, but not comping the second bottle missed the mark for the 5 star service.

NORTH END, Boston This place was recommended by a local Bostonian so we made the reservations (a MUST) and everything was spectacular. I loved walking up to the place in "little Italy", past Paul Revere's house. The restaurant feels like you are walking into someone's house. We sat upstairs in the living room. The place was super busy, but they had it under control. Service was on point, but the food was slow to come out (for us Americans), but this is exactly how it is in Italy. In fact, this is the closest to "Italy" dining that Ive experienced! We also ate at Carmelina's, which was delicious too but more like eating in your Italian grandmas house, (which I prefer). Hubby liked Mamma Maria so much he said if it was his last meal on earth he'd be happy. The lobster ravioli and burrata appetizers were amazing, the pastas were excellent and my fish was also perfectly cooked. You can not go wrong with the food here.

Mamma Maria is a true gem in the North End. Set in a charming vintage two-story building which looks like a previous Victorian home, the restaurant has an old-world feel with classic Italian decor that makes the experience feel both intimate and timeless. The food was outstanding--our favorites were the Pasta con Sugo, rich and comforting; the Osso Bucco, fall-off-the-bone tender; and the Barolo Boar Gnocchi which was the best appetizer...all of these dishes were incredibly flavorful and unique. The service was polished and warm, perfectly complementing the cozy yet upscale vibe. Finally, we had the best apple tart dessert you will ever find in a restaurant! Overall, this is a must-visit for anyone looking for an authentic Italian dining experience in Boston!

Mamma Maria is our favorite restaurant in Boston. We had beautiful outdoor seating. It was a bit chilly and they were prepared with blankets. Service was excellent. It was pricey but I'm so glad we decided to dine here. Just a note, Paul Reveres House was across the street and a few buildings down. What historic ambiance! We skipped ordering appetizers and tried not to eat the bread so we could enjoy our mains which ended up being a very good decision. Our entrees were excellent. The "Beef" was grilled black angus beef tenderloin with Hudson valley foie gras, asparagus and carbonara pasta. That was the description but I just know it was super tender and delicious beef, the asparagus and carbonara was a good complement for the beef. The lamb three ways was an excellent idea to taste lamb. The grilled lamb, roasted lamb loin and lamb in the raviolis all tasted like very good lamb and cooked perfectly. It wasn't gamey or had an overly strong lamb taste. I loved the osso buco with saffron risotto carnaroli alla millanese. The marrow was the best part and so rich. The risotto had a great saffron flavor, the millanese sauce made everything that much better. This is definitely one of our family favorite places. We would strongly recommend trying this place to family and friends.

We went here for my girlfriends birthday. Needless to say, they did not disappoint in any way. The service was polite professional and quick. They brought us some bread and olive oil to nibble on. Although it was a bit crowded, it felt very cozy and romantic. I had informed them of the occasion and they brought us a very nice birthday dessert plate. The server took a picture for us which was very nice of them. I had to shake his hand at the end because they made me look so good in front of my girlfriend. Definitely recommend this place!

We had a decent experience at Mamma Maria. It was highly recommended by our guide we had while in Boston. The only problem I had was not really thinking about food selection. Most elegant Italian places have more exotic dishes. My wife is more picky than I am so she had a tough time choosing a menu item. She eventually chose the Asparagus Ravioli (the first one she got had a human hair in it so we waited 20-30 for the second one to arrive). I ordered Beef, that was the name of the dish. It was an enormous beef tenderloin with a pasta w/cheese, and asparagus. It was sooo good. Melt in your mouth. Just so you know, we had no reservation and was able to be seated in the outside dining area. Highly recommend you call for a reservation. PS It would not be a true review of Mamma Maria without letting you know that the manager personally brought us an appetizer of peach, mango, plums with fresh mozzarella nicely covered with olive oil and pepper. Really good app ( sorry forgot the pic)

    Do they accommodate gluten free?

Are there high chairs for kids?

    Yes there are

Is there an elevator to get to the 2nd floor?

    No, there is no elevator

Are kids allowed there? We'll be in the area soon and went to Mamma Maria's the night we got engaged 12 years ago. Would love to bring our kids (aged 5 and 8)

There was a table with a few kids when I was last there. You may want to verify there are things on the menu they'll eat. Enjoy!

Are reservations recommended, and how far out should we plan to book reservations? I know the north end is busy in the summer but i'm unfamiliar with the winter scene and we plan to visit in December. Thanks!

I would recommend booking a reservation a few weeks in advance just to be safe.

    Do they have outdoor heaters?

    Yup

Is this a good place for Valentines Day?

Definitely! One of my favorite restaurants in the North End.

    Can men wear jeans?

Oh sure! It's a nice place and slacks are commonly seen, but jeans would be just fine.

    Ok to wear shorts?

    Yes! Its a casual place

The menu refers to these as "Greek cheese bread" but somehow that doesn't do it justice - these were immensely pillowy and cheesy, with an amazing crust, with homemade honey butter on the side. I could have had just these for dinner and been satisfied. They really nailed the bread. My other favorites: 1. Hipiti: spicy whipped feta with crispy potatoes on the side. I don't do well with spice but I absolutely loved this. 2. Marouli: winter lettuce with the most amazing vinaigrette dressing. My only knock to this is, presentation-wise, they serve it with half of the plate empty and the other half with salad. I don't understand why restaurants do this because - one, it only highlights the smaller portion and two, we're just going to mix the salad all around in the bowl anyway. 3. Boudeto: daily catch in a beautiful tomato broth. For a seafood dish at a restaurant in Back Bay, this was priced at a fairly reasonable $28. The only dish that fell a little flat for me was the tzatziki - needed a bit more seasoning. As it was, I was eating mostly just plain yogurt. The table-side preparation was cool, though. The space is its own visual dinner, there's simply a lot to look at (including a drawing of Poseidon riding a surf board). We got the big table in the back, which was a beautiful glass structure with a whole terrarium underneath. We couldn't stop marveling at it throughout the meal. Our waiter was wonderful - very helpful recommendations, came by to check on us often even though we were pretty far in the back, super patient with our questions. Hard to get reservations but worth it! Don't bother driving / trying to find parking unless you're willing to eat a hefty garage fee, it's Back Bay.

The bread had large air pockets, visibly soft, with a rich aroma of salt and milk; the olive oil was smooth and mellow, with a full-bodied fragrance, and the aftertaste even included a subtle, restrained hint of tea. Even knowing it's a calorie bomb, I couldn't resist dipping it in more. Baccala Mantecato: Classic Venetian flavor. The salted cod was tender and delicate, almost like a light foam, somewhere between raw silk and mousse; the dark bread was simple yet not coarse, perfectly balancing the saltiness of the cod. The most surprising thing was the refreshing aroma of celery leaves that emerged in the aftertaste, lingering and persistent. Lumache: When looking at the menu, seeing "chili butter, Jonah crab, breadcrumb," I never expected such a distinct citric acidity. The subtle acidity was gently enveloped in the fatty aroma of chili butter, perfectly complementing the umami and sweetness of the crab meat with just the right amount of spiciness. The lumache were firm and chewy, the sauce rich and smooth, and the breadcrumbs light and crisp, creating a rich and distinct texture. The portion was generous; even after microwaved the next day, the sauce had naturally broken down and the lemon's tartness had dissipated, but the noodles mixed with chili oil still had a unique flavor. Tiramisu: Highly renowned, and the staff were quite confident. The surface was covered with a thick layer of crispy cocoa nibs, the cake itself is incredibly soft and moist, and digging inside reveals an "underground river" of coffee liquid, while its bitterness was perfectly balanced by the sweet Marsala. The overall flavor was sweet and mellow, less bitter than typical tiramisu, with more layers of complexity. Actually, I was hoping for a slightly bitter version. Even on a weekday, it was packed with customers; by 5:10 PM, only one bar seat was left. Reservations are highly recommended. However, the bar was in a good location, with the bartenders being the easiest servers to find. It was a pleasant conversation with them.

The service here was attentive with the waiters offering more bread for the mussels. Most dishes are a little spicy, so if you don't like spice, make sure to note that with the waiter. The miso gelato is one of the most delicious savory/sweet desserts, and has lots of nice crunchy accents of the sesame crumble. Cocktails are fabulous, very smooth, as well as the mocktails. Cons: The crostini was nothing really special, and one of them came without the oyster butter. The meatballs, which were tasty but had a slightly hard texture on the outside. The prawn risotto was pretty one-note in flavor, and the prawn heads tasted overcooked and slightly off. The radiatore was spicy and nicely plated. The Cremoso al Cioccolato had a strange flavor profile that didn't quite fit, and had such a large salted chocolate-truffle section that we did not finish it (which is saying something)! Overall, if you are looking for a solid dinner in Boston that will guarantee be a nice experience because of the atmosphere, this is a good place.

Salty Pig Pizza: A pizza with the same name as the restaurant! Who was the genius who came up with the idea of salted pig and beer caramel? It's brilliant! The salted pork appears to include Prosciutto di Parma from Langirano, Prosciutto Cotto, and Salcissia. Baking rendered the prosciutto's fat, which blends with the caramel to create a beautiful golden syrup that flows across the pizza's surface. The prosciutto was savory, oily, and tender; the minced salcissia retains its coarse texture and rich meaty aroma; the caramel was sweet and mellow with a honey-like sweetness, forming the top, middle, and base notes respectively. The arugula was slightly warmed, losing its astringent and raw taste while maintaining its crisp texture, helped to cut through the richness together with the Parmesan cheese powder. The crust was crispy, while the inside the dough was soft and chewy. The cooking time and seasoning were all just right, and the restaurant's proud wooden oven added a charming smoky flavor. Affogato: I had high expectations, but it was just okay. The espresso was too sour, and the vanilla ice cream couldn't balance it out.
