Maggie's in one of the oldest bars on 6th, a pat of the 6th street legend across the country. That said, you'd think it would be a bigger deal. It had nice points, I'll grant you. They have live music, though the quality is hit or miss. They have a great outdoor patio on heir roof, one of the largest and nicest in Austin, good for watching fireworks or games on their giant screen (if you like the Longhorns, that is) or attending a large alumni event (which I did). They also have a long, thin, dive bar style shotgun bar on the far side, and this is the part that feels authentically 6th street, it's very tattooed and who gives a shit over there, and a good place to have a quiet beer on a weekday night. read more

We've been going here since college and always enjoyed the roof-top bar and inexpensive drinks. It's been a couple years, and the last visit was enough to erase all happy memories. My boyfriend, who is a bartender at another bar downtown, attempted to explain to the staff that our friend was not drunk, merely tripped off the edge of the rooftop bar, and before I could even process what was happening, I saw my boyfriend (who has always been extraordinarily passive) being thrown down the stairs and kicked. I wish he has filed a police report, but he refused. I'm never going back again, this behavior was absolutely unacceptable. read more

This is hands down the biggest bar on dirty 6th. Entrance is already a huge room featuring live music. Upstairs is ridiculous with multiple bars and huge open spaces accommodating hundreds. The center has a projection screen and a dance floor. The left side room has a live DJ playing techno/dance. Cool bar but drinks are expensive and poured in tiny cheap plastic cups. I guess it's understandable when you are serving hundreds of people every minute. read more

My boyfriend took me here to show me the great upstairs deck area that looks out over 6th street. It is a great view, but we ended up spending our time inside because there were more seats. Inside was pretty much empty because everyone was outside, very understandable. The beer selection inside was pretty minimal. They had more liquor than anything. I ended up ordering a Michelob Ultra because they had no draft selection. It came in a can so that people can't throw glass off the balcony. Smart idea. We didn't spend too much time here because I was anxious to find somewhere that had better beer. In general, my experience was marginal. Perhaps I didn't give it enough time or maybe I should have been outside with a group of friends. I just thought the DJ was cheesy and the drink selection wasn't that great. read more

I have been to Maggie Maes 100 times over the last 15 years and they are always consistant. They treat the locals and the tourist with class and show the best of Austin. I am always sending people to Maggie Maes. It is one of only a dozen or so bars on Old Pecan Street (6th street) that have been open in Austin for over 10 years, that is because they know how to do it right. read more

I have been to Maggie Mae's many times. I've always enjoyed the music and atmosphere. However, last night's experience shattered what, prior to this experience, would have been a four star rating. What happened is this....I was drinking beers and talking with friends. I finished my beer, crushed the can in my hands, and then tossed the beer in the trash can..oops I missed. Immediately, one of the bouncers got in my face and ordered me to pick up the can. This guy was aggressive, rude, and overbearing. I asked him if he worked for Maggie Mae's., and he replied in the affirmative. I told him that yes, I was planning on picking up the can. Then he actually had the nerve to start counting down. Bear in mind that this is mere seconds after having missed the trash can. I waited for his count to end before I slowly walked over, picked up the can, and placed it in the receptacle. Then he told me that I had to leave. WTF? I told him to go F himself, and then I went back to my friends. A moment later another bouncer came over and told me that I had to come with him. I told him what happened, as well I told him that I am a combat veteran (I exaggerated for effect. I'm a veteran, but not a combat vet.), and that I don't deserve to be bossed around and disrespected. I told him that I was not leaving the bar and I asked him to get his manager. He came back a few minutes later and told me that the manager was downstairs, and he asked me to come with him. To make the story short, he duped me, left me outside the bar, and they wouldn't let me back in. I demanded to speak to the manager. Finally, some guy that said he was the manager came out and spoke to me. He said that there was nothing he could do. So that's it. Apparently you have to lick the boots of any bouncer who barks an order at you at Maggie Mae's. I was well-behaved, well within the bounds of sobriety, and I was a loyal customer. My only crimes were crushing a can and poor aim. I will not bow down to the gestapo that runs security at Maggie Mae's, nor will I drop my money at a place that does not respect veterans. There are plenty of other good bars on 6th street folks. Don't support a place that treats you worse than a discarded beer can. F*%k you Maggie Mae's!! read more

Incredibly rude bartender upstairs, this woman who poured our drinks was one of the most miserable people i have ever encountered, and it was not the end of the night, it wasn't overcrowded, people weren't belligerent yet. I honestly can't imagine being as bad at my job as this woman was at hers (she poured the drinks fine, i mean with a horrible attitude but can you ask for more on dirty sixth?), but she swiped one of our friend's cards 3 times in a row (quickly up and down like some bartenders do to make sure the stripe reads) but her Bank of America app froze the account thinking it was fraud or accidentally double-charged. This caused her card to be denied and the bartender's response was "just as I thought, you don't have any money" which is one of the most appalling things I have ever seen someone on a job say to someone who is trying to pay for a service, this woman was maybe raised by wolves, who knows? When our friend showed her the text fraud alert she got from BOA the bartender rolled her eyes and said she didn't have time to look at anything (it was early enough on this night that we were one of maybe 10 patrons at the upstairs bar at this point). Someone else in our group ended up paying but the initial interaction with this horrid bartender was enough to make us leave after our drinks. Truly a miserable, miserable person. read more

I usually come to this bar because of the rooftop dance floor. It's a nice club, but last night ruined my experience. As I was exiting the club down the stairs with friends, an African American male bouncer asked my friend something and she couldn't understand him since the music was so loud, we were just trying to leave. Then he grabbed my girlfriend by the neck and pushed her down the stairs, and everyone was yelling and completely freaked out. A white male bouncer with red hair helped him throw her out. We cannot believe we were treated that way, we were not out of line in any way. The bouncer was in a bad mood to begin with when we entered the club. I wish I knew his name to complain. I only spent 10 minutes here on what may have been the most athletic bar crawl i've ever experienced, but THIS place rubbed me the right way. I caught some good live music--mad points to the afro'd drummer who managed to put down his stick, grab his beer and do the head nod/wink at me while still keeping perfect time--and didn't have a terrible time getting a drink. Was in town for the CPD Enforcers (Chicago Police) football game against the Central Texas Wolf Pack this passed weekend. My friend and I stopped at Maggie Mae's on Friday, 3/22. We only visited the first floor "shotgun bar" that night. In all honesty, you can thank your bartender, Gianni for our stopping in. As we walked by, there was nobody in the place, but Gianni's smile and infectious personality drew us in. She was wonderful! The DJ was spinning some good music as well. We actually stopped back in on Saturday after our football party and visited the 2nd floor. Nice place, friendly staff and reasonable prices. This is a different kind of bar. With it being split into so many different sections. There is something for any kind of person that is looking to chill. I usually prefer to go upstairs and have a drink with some friends under the stars. But ever since they covered the roof with the canopy, its just not the same. But yes the drinks are pretty cheap and you can have a really good time watching the people below stumble down 6th street. read more

The rooftop patio was very nice. Live Dj was present when I visited. You can see all of 6th Street from the rooftop. The drinks tasted great and they were reasonably priced for 6th Street. They had live music going on downstairs. The bartenders were attentive and very polite. I thought it didn't make much sense that you couldn't take glass on the rooftop. However they offer plastic cups to pour your drink into. Pretty cool spot. I'd imagine it is rocking during Mardi Gras. read more

Rooftop dance party. If those three words don't do it for you, just stop reading right now. For the remaining 99.9% of us who like a good-ass time, Maggie Mae's will do you just fine. In ATX for a bachelor party weekend with nearly twenty dudes, not only is credit due to Maggie Mae's for keeping this large group virtually intact while out on the town, but also for entertaining us for two damn nights in a row. Truthfully, we tried to go elsewhere on our second venture into Dirty Sixth territory, but nothing was living up to the brand of a good time we knew was waiting for us at Maggie Mae's. Pretty quickly, we were back up on that rooftop, drinking double mixed drinks, and having any and every group of girls avoid us because we were, well, a solid lot of drunk dudes dancing with one another. Allow me to set the stage (as if the twenty-bro visual wasn't enough). Against a big Texas night sky, Maggie Mae's has a VJ set-up with a drive-in style, music video-playing big screen looming over the dance floor. Good music is one thing, but a good music video (especially one gigantically broadcast) brings shit to another level. Mostly hip-hop, pop, and R&B clips (with a weird middle stretch of country, but hey, we're still in the South here) were chopped/scratched into an impressive mix that made it hard for MM's revelers to walk away from and try somewhere else. (Guilty as charged.) No-brainers like $2 upgrades to turn your mixed drinks into the aforementioned doubles may have played a part in our loyalty here, as well. And while it can't hold a candle to the ratchetness walking outside down on E. 6th St. (again, they don't call it Dirty Sixth for nothing...), Maggie Mae's had its fair share of people-watching potential, as it's a pretty popular spot for out-of-towners (bachelor and bachelorette parties alike) and/or locals who like to lose their damn mind on the dance floor. Two things I didn't care for, however: 1) The downstairs country pub half of Maggie Mae's. With the open-air party goin' on upstairs, the ground floor set-up didn't stand a chance - just not my thing. 2) The definitely sketchy staff. All of the bouncers watch you like hawks (and how they profile potential miscreants is questionable), but the one scanning the dance floor with cat eye contacts was seriously unsettling. I'm also shocked a fight didn't break out at one point or another. Despite these minor gripes, Maggie Mae's served us well. Hard to imagine finding a better spot to keep a large crew entertained, again not one, but two nights. (Trust us, we tried.) If you are rollin' deep, accept no imitations, and head straight to MM's. read more

My out of town friends love this bar so we always make it by whenever they are in town.However,I'm not sure I'll be returning after an incident this past weekend.I understand that patrons must be out of the bar by a certain time.I get it.But,that is absolutely not an excuse to physically put your hands on and shove people,let alone women.We were on steps.Someone could have easily fallen in heels.Totally uncalled for and unacceptable.Not to mention we spent 20 minutes waiting in line bc the bouncer kept allowing large groups to cut the line.This place just isn't worth it.Move on. read more

Have always enjoyed the rooftop here when it's not too crowded/busy. Given it's on 6th, it does tend to get pretty packed some nights. But interestingly enough, on many weekends you can still find space to sit, or at least stand, while having a drink. Good memories here. read more

This place was a great night-starter!! We came here first on a recommendation and it totally became our go-to bar. There were three bars, two downstairs, and one upstairs. The upstairs one was great because it was open-air and you could look down unto 6th street to see all the people walk by. Also, they had a massive TV screen playing the sports game of the moment. I cannot emphasize how cheap mixed drinks and beers are here! and how great this is a way to get yourself amped for the rest of the night on the 6th. Have fun. -Matt read more
