I've never been to Austin before, but everyone I talked to who lives here or visits frequently said I should check out 6th street. It's pretty much like. Bourbon or Beale Street, and there's tons to see, drink, and eat. We stopped in Maggie Mae's to grab a couple of drinks and sit in their courtyard because it was such a beautiful day! Our bartender was courteous and was glad to help us when we had questions about what to do, where to eat, hidden gems, etc... He made outstanding drinks and the prices were not that high, considering where we were. It's a beautiful spot that I would definitely go to again! read more

Well, hello there, Maggie Mae's! You sure know how to show an out of town girl a good time! This place is good for dancing and some eye candy on the rooftop on 6th Street. They have all sorts of drinks and I stuck with some shiner bock so I wouldn't trip all over myself when I danced to some hip hop/dance music. If it's your birthday, the DJ will play a request such as Empire State of Mind. There's also ample room for you to curl up in the corner just in case that Tequila shot(s) pull you to your knees. As my two buddies and continued our tour of 6th street we were again drawn in by live music and this place had plenty of space! Granted it was late Thursday night and there was a Fan Fest going on for the F1 race (the reason for our visit to Ausitin), the place was still lively! The stage was a good size, you could probably fit a small marching band up there! The sound level for the blues band that played this night was at a comfortable level... I can't say anything bad about the bar itself because I never actually got to experience it due to the bouncer not allowing me to enter. He claimed that my I.D. was fake because I just moved here from North Carolina and I guess he had never seen a NC driver's license ? I even offered to show him my debit card which also had my name and picture on it that matched by ID. I felt I was treated very unfairly and when I attempted to reason with this man, he threatened to call the police. I was PRETTY confident that I am 26 years old and my ID is not fake so I wasn't worried at all about the police coming but at that point I no longer wanted to give the bar my business so I left. read more

If you're looking for a laid-back place with ambiance and style, don't go to Maggie Mae's. With that said, Maggie Mae's performs its schtick well: Big bar, lots going on, young 20-somethings galore, & cheap drinks. I wouldn't visit frequently, but it's great for a big night out. read more

Maggie Mae's was the first bar we checked out during our SXSW stay in Austin. Came to Maggie Mae's at around 11 or 12? to check out Eisley on the rooftop deck. The rooftop was definitely cool, I enjoyed creeping on people walking on the street below, and it was nice to get some fresh air while drinking! There were 2 bars upstairs, which was nice because neither was crowded and we were able to get our drinks quickly. I thought Eisley was really good, although the arrangement up there isn't quite ideal for viewing the band, because the stage is higher than back part of the room, so the crowd was blocking my view (if that makes sense). It was rather easy to push up front for the last couple songs though, so I was able to see Eisley for at least part of their set. I enjoyed my time at Maggie Mae's, and the rooftop deck is definitely worth checking out. Otherwise, nothing too too special, especially since I heard that they don't usually have live music during non SXSW times. read more

This is the bar where I learned what "Southern Hospitality" is. Wow, these guys behind the bar are super friendly!! To be honest, I was a little shocked at first, cause coming from San Francisco, most people are definitely not that friendly for no reason. We had ordered our drink, talked a little with the bartender as he genuinely asked us how our day was going and what we were doing. Told him we were just here for 1 drink, bar hopping on 6th street as we were tourist, he gave us recommendations of other bars and offered to take a picture of us (we hadn't even mentioned this). Given the other reviews, I came here with my shields up. I was prepped to defend myself against sketchy bouncers, be ignored by grizzly bartenders, and get my butt kicked after asking for water. But actually it was a super pleasant experience. All of the staff were either very nice and helpful, or just obviously too busy doing their job to bother with you. The space itself is nice, especially the upstairs area. Past that, I'm not really sure what to say. It's a clubby bar type of place. Nothing super special past that I guess. I think relative to some of the other bars on 6th I felt it was nicer, but I'm not sure that is really saying much. read more

Oh man, 6th street. I just, don't even know what to say haha. If I were still in college (or let's be real, later years of high school), I would've had the best time on 6th street. But nearing the end of my 20's, I'm just feeling a little too old for this scene. My local friend put it best: you need to be properly toasted to experience 6th street - it's not meant to be seen sober. As far as 6th street goes, I really liked this place. It had a giant balcony and lots of seating, perfect for overlooking the drunken antics. Bottom line: if you're properly schmammered and up for this kitschy scene, go for it. If not, I might try your kicks elsewhere. read more

No matter what your taste you will find exciting entertainment at Maggie Mae's including; a sports bar with big screens to watch the game, an authentic English Pub, a new Orleans style courtyard beneath the stars and three live music stages with different genres of music on each. I would have given this place a better rating, but they lost my ID and debit card. My friends and I stumbled here after a few drinks at The Side Bar because we saw someone outside that we recognized. The band playing for Blue Monday was awesome, so I went to buy us some drinks. Maybe I just don't spend enough time on 6th, but I was perturbed when the bartender (the dude) asked to take my ID with my tab. Huh? That only happened to me before when I had a temporary card. He assured me it would be safe, though. Lots more drinks and good times followed. The female bartender working was very nice and friendly! Near 2 AM, we stumbled out into the street thinking we'd just jump to another bar real quick and then come back to close out like we do on 7th street. Instead, we forgot. Oops. The next day when they opened I called and asked about my stuff, but they told me everything was gone. Seriously? I had to cancel my debit card and get a new driver's license. They do get 3 stars anyway because I feel kinda bad- canceled debit card means all those tasty drinks we consumed wound up being FREE. read more

Best venue on 6th St. It's never overly crowded, there are different levels, and you can actually hear the music (not just the sound of the bass. You can actually sing along). My favorite spot is on the roof with music videos and Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby." You cannot go wrong with that. Sure, it's just a bar and you might not appreciate it as much after several drinks, but it's a really cool place to dance, drink, and socialize. Great for groups or a date. Awesome atmosphere. Very cool space. I love the rooftop setup and being able to look out at 6th St. or the folks next door (Blind Pig Pub) dancing away. There was a band downstairs, but in the upstairs there is some sound clash between the DJ here and Blind Pig's DJ. Maggie's has real cheap drinks, and the crowd is mixed. There were some nice clubby types here, and they were almost out of place. But not really. If you are just looking to hang out, bring a few friends and people-watch on the roof. read more

I always love going to the Gibson Room upstairs at Maggie Mae's but never again during SXSW. I was very disappointed the have to smell the stench of cigar smoke INSIDE. When my husband brought this up to the bartender, he informed my husband that the owner gave them the cigars to the SXSW guests!! He also acknoweldged that smoking is illegal inside. My husband then brought up this problem with the manager Jeb? and he did NOTHING! When we were leaving there were several people smoking cigarettes in the other room as well. Austin has a smoking ban law and you are not exempt. We are local Austinites and have been to The Gibson Room before- you should take care of your locals that bring you regular money and not just fawn all over and pass out cigars to the visitors from L.A.!! read more

Nice rooftop and the big screen is great if you're watching a game or if they have a DJ mixing videos. The downstairs is nice too, especially if you want to take a break from the crowded rooftop. The live music scene here is nice, good variety. Almost every time I go there is usually a group there from a conference going on. read more

Drinks were cheap and strong, but quite possibly the most rude bouncers on the face of the planet and an incompetent managers. Was there with some friends and after the first round a stumbling drunk guy ran into me from behind and caused me to spill my beer. Instead of causing a scene I picked up my beer and we began to clean my two friends shoes. The bouncer comes over and then accuses my girlfriend of throwing up and the tells us to leave. We tried to explain what happened but the bouncer didn't listen. We decided just to leave. After we walked out he than followed us down the street harassing us and telling other bars not to let us in. I then returned to speak to the manager and the bouncer got confrontational as I was speaking to a manger and the manager let him be extremely rude. Was the worst experience I've ever had in a bar/restaurant. With so many awesome places on 6th street I would recommend just skipping over this one. read more

My wife and I got there around 6pm-ish on Sat Aug 4, there was a 3-person band playing and they sounded good. The place wasn't busy yet. We got a table upstairs and I went downstairs to get some drinks. There was enough activity around the bar to keep the bartender busy but he was not slammed. A young lady was in front of me waiting to order and the bartender walked passed us a couple of times while waiting on others. So I figured those folks were there first. Then a guy sitting at a table a few feet behind where I was standing in line to order got up and walked over to the bar, to the left of me. When the bartender came back our way the guy said something and seemed like he was ordering. The bartender appeared to start working on that guy's order (it was loud, I could not hear everything that was going on). So, as the bartender walked by, I said "you see us, right?" -- I had to raise my voice to be heard but I don't think I sounded angry. The bartender semi-acknowledged me and I put up my hand to say "cool, just checking..." -- I said "thanks", whether he could hear me or not. The bartender did something at the other end of the bar and made his way back to where we were standing in line. As he walked back he had a pissed off look on his face, looking at me, and was saying something... the part I could hear was "... I have to take care of my other people, you don't have to be an asshole about it". He kept bitching a bit after that but I'd heard enough. I walked a couple of steps toward the bar and said, "Hey, I was only asking you a f'ing question" - I could have left out "f'ing" but now I was pissed off. He stared at me as he was working the cash registered and he nodded like he was going to spit in my drink when/if he got to me. So I turned around, got my wife, and we went to a place down the street with better music and, as it happened, a more professional bartender. I get that the guy was busy with other folks but it looked like he never saw me (or the young lady ahead of me) in line. All the bartender had to do was acknowledge that he saw us and things would have been fine. I spent 20 years working in restaurants and (very busy, and loud) bars. I have a great deal of respect for the folks who can work those environments. And I know how easy it is to let someone in line know that they are on the radar. On 6th street, going to one of these places is a coin toss. They are all pretty much the same. I won't give this place another chance, and I suggest you don't either. read more

First time in Austin with my autistic son, so I wanted to show him around town. Stopped by to check out this venue b/c of the rooftop, but the bouncer refused to let my son in. The bouncer said he did not believe my son was of age despite me showing him his ID. In disbelief, I pulled out my phone to record the bouncer and his inflammatory accusations. The bouncer proceeded to place his hands on my phone, and pushed me back even though I was standing on the public sidewalk. My autistic son became very distressed and tried to speak, but the bouncer mocked him by uttering demeaning sounds and blabber. I asked the bouncer what his problem was, but he turned his back and continued snickering. Physical and verbal assault combined with discrimination was very disappointing for an establishment in Austin. Are these bullies the type of people Maggie Mae's hires at their front door? read more

Taking this isolated downtime to catch up on some reviews. This place is nothing more than a joke. NYE party is a sloppy mess. Literally. Even a crazy fun time can be somewhat organized and clean. Not here. Some of the bartenders have a serious attitude. The tickets they sell for $25 through Eventbrite are a joke. They were just letting everyone in, no cover, no scanning of tickets. For the record, I'm totally ok with rednecks wanting to have their own bars. But if you're going to put a redneck bar in the heart of Austin, at least put a confederate flag out front so there's no confusion about who's welcome or not. When I first moved to Austin five years ago, Maggie Mae's was the very first bar that I went to. I loved it and have continued to go on various weekends, events, and whenever a visitor comes to town. Sadly, last Saturday changed my love of Maggie Mae's. I was out celebrating my birthday with a group of my friends. We were sitting in the upstairs indoor bar in a circle. Suddenly a group of about six bouncers came up and told my friend's boyfriend and his friend they had to leave. We had no clue what was going on as we had been together all night minding our own business. We finally got an answer out of one saying that they believed our two friends were dealing drugs. This seemed odd as our two friends were the only minorities of the group. They continued to kick them out and we of course went with them. They never gave us an answer as to why they thought that and my friends even offered to be searched. As we were leaving, my friend explained to the bouncers that they were each veterans and one still in the military. His response was, "Well you know how people in the military are." Not only was this a clear case of racial profiling, but also disrespecting these two that served their country. I posted this earlier to Maggie Mae's Facebook page and within hours it was deleted without a reach out or message from their management or owners. I am very disappointed to see that this is not being taken seriously as this is no way that a establishment should treat their customers. I again welcome the owners or even the management of Maggie Mae's to please reach out to find out which of your staff is behaving like this and creating a bad name for their bar within the Austin community. read more

I took a group of people to this bar because it was advertised on do512.com for there drink specials. Get to the bar and asked for the drinks on the special and the girl bartender was like that's def not a special tonight I showed her the ad that was posted online with there bar symbols and details. She texted the manager and asked and he said the ad is 4 years old. No way do512.com that updates the site would have that for four years so we argued about it for a min how that's a bull shit answer the employees went on how they are not paid and the owner is crap. Then my friends and I move on to talk about other stuff then the guy bartender comes up and rips the drinks out of two peoples hands and says we have to leave when they just bought the drinks the manager comes over and tells us bull shit and the GM won't come talk to me at all about this. This is the most ridiculous situation I've ever been in. I work at a bar in Hawaii I'm just visiting Austin for the summer and I would never let someone I know go to the bar if the employees are treated like shit they will treat the guest like shit. I came here with hubby to see the show Chicago and we had a great time. The band was incredibly good, they played some great jazz. My husband ordered two drinks are he said it was really good. The show was great, the atmosphere was cool and the place itself was very nice. We shall return again someday. read more

When I got to the door to show the bouncer my drivers license, he instantly said he needed to see another form of identification. I showed him my debit card. He looked it over and said he still couldn't let me in. I was wearing a white button down shirt and a tie; I'm a woman. I feel like I was discriminated against because I am gay. There was no reason for him to deny me entry. I was dressed nicely, had a valid ID, and am well above the legal age. I think the bouncers pride themselves on being jerks. My license had expired and even though I'm almost 30, I couldn't go in. That's ok I guess, being a little overly cautious but it was my nieces 21st birthday so we pushed it a little and the bouncers said something like, "Cry me a river." Whatever, What really got me though was when I had one of my high school students tell me he goes there! He gave me a sufficient description of the inside that I think he's being truthful. I've asked around and at least 2 others have been there also. Maybe those bouncers need to learn to check more than the expiration date! I like the roof top dancing and big video screen but Blind Pig is similar and the bouncers are actually cool. read more
