The bar itself is beautiful, the live music is always great, and the place is very open, you can even go to the rooftop to get away from everything. However, the customer service is lacking. You have to search them out to get served, I found myself begging to be served on the rooftop, the beer was ok but good customer service makes me spend more money at a bar, there was a huge lack of servers too, one server for a whole floor of people on a busy night? I was begging them to take my money but still had a hard time. Not good, but I love the atmosphere and you need more bodies on the floor to collect money, this place should also invest in some ladies as servers, it was all guys when I went. Better beer would give this place an extra star and better customer service another. I will give this place another chance though because I really did like the layout of the place, the customer service I did receive was friendly but I still shouldn't have to be all Sherlock Holmes looking for someone to give money to. read more

Don't go in here unless you wan't to be harassed by a group of hoodrats. Walked in here with about 10 people for my birthday. I had been given a nice seasonal Christmas beer with a big picture of Santa on it. Upon walking in i presented it to the doorguy and he said it was cool unopened. I had to explain this to like 4 other guys while in the bar until the one weasel just came up and grabbed it out of my GF's purse. I was livid to say the least but the entire pack of monkeys couldn't get it through their thick skull it was unopened and legal. They just started moving away with the beer. They almost got more than they asked for. The door guy later bald faced lie to the other bouncers that he let me in with it and I was kicked out. Maggie Mae's is kind of a mirror image of next door Blind Pig Pub. They both have large outdoor patios but I found Blind Pig's to be much livelier. Maggie Mae's has the advantage at the street level (downstairs) - it's roomier and the live music was much better. This space is really amazing. It's huge and the middle is SO open. The bottom level has a lot of rooms where you can drink and an area where bands can set up and perform. The top level is a huge roof bar that's open and very laid back. They have games playing on their big screen there so it's a good place to grab a drink and kick back and unwind. I have to say, I'm old and don't have much College Rage left in me so I was tired by 9pm and really didn't stay much longer after that to see the cool kids drunkenly take over. I'm sure when it gets crowded this place gets ridiculous (like most of the places on 6th street). I guess you just have to really figure out what you want out of coming to a place like this. If you don't want to get vommed on... go early for a pregame (or if you're old like me it IS your pregame and your 'game' hahahaha). One of my favorite bars on 6th Street! I usually head up to the 2nd floor open patio in which the Frost Bank Tower is illuminated in the back. A really cool place to hang out on a warm night. They had a great 90's rock cover band one night and another time I came, they were playing Mel Gibson's Apocalypto...that was kind of weird. Bartenders are great, prices are reasonable. You can meet some interesting people here. Very cool and open bar when walking in the bar had a nice open space when I walked in. There was a fountain to the left when entering with tables placed at certain spots for smoking if you smoked. There was also an upstairs section with small bar for more room. My girlfriend said when she used the restroom though she noticed there was no hot water to wash your hands so that was an uncool thing we notified the bartender and they said they was doing some construction which I noticed when I walked in due to some of the dry wall not really being done in a corner of the bar. read more

Great little dive. The rooftop is great place to just hang out and watch the crowd below. But get up there early for a good spot. I usually like hanging downstairs at the little bar by the window. Same crowd watching, but at street. But the best part is the stage area. Live music here is one of the best spots on 6th St. Always dark and cool. My roommate and I are new to town, so we asked some girls on the street where to go on 6th Street. They saw through our shameless pickup attempt in record time and, with no enthusiasm, offered up: "umm, I don't know, it depends on what you like...Maggie Mae's is cool I guess." We take a chance and go there. The drinks are sorta weak, but drinkable. The rooftop patio is meh. The band is pretty unlistenable and not helped by the crowd that has as much energy as a heroin junkie after running a 10k. The only things that saved the night and the third star of my review: meeting a thirty-something couple that joked about domestic life, and the comedy of seeing a circa 1994 rear projection big screen TV hanging from the ceiling. So if that's your thing, then Maggie Mae's is your kind of place. read more

This place is huge! They had a live band playing in one room, a bar in another room, an outdoors/indoors patio, an upstairs area with a projector and screen that was showing the playoffs, and an upstairs seating area. Impressive. The people at the downstairs bar make a mean Irish Car Bomb. Their kamikazes are also blue. Odd, but yummy none-the-less. So yummy, in fact, that I drank a little too much here. Which is how I found out that they have pretty decent bathroom (toilet) accommodations, as well. =( I'm not sure if it's because if we were from out of town or what, but people here (and on 6th street) were REALLY nice to us. For example, my friend and I were sitting down in a booth and the DJ came up to US and asked US what songs we wanted to hear. That NEVER happens on the west coast. He brought us to the DJ booth and played some "yay area" stuff for us since we were visiting from the Bay Area in California. E-40 sounds even better from 1,700 miles away. Haha. It's always a coin toss at Maggie Mae's, but if you choose your day and time wisely, this place is awesome. There is always live music downstairs, and the bands have been great every time I've stayed downstairs to listen. Upstairs has more music options, but I'm most used to the DJ on weekend evenings. If the temperature's right, people get their groove on upstairs on the deck, with a great view of the Frost Tower. It's more of a beer place, as the liquor drinks are hit or miss. If you're willing to to take a risk, you may end up with the perfect night at Maggie Mae's. If the line's out the door, keep walking. read more

Good to see my old go to spot in Austin hasn't changed. Well except, thankfully, they stopped showing replays of the 2006 Rose Bowl. I kid I kid Longhorn fans. I love watching Vince Young carve up the USC defense. We all hate USC. Actually now that I'm much older, I felt slightly creepy rolling into a college bar and being 10 years older than everyone else. Relatively speaking, it's expensive for a college bar. The highlights of Maggie Mae's though is the outdoor rooftop. It's a pretty legit scene in the spring time, where you get to overlook 6th Street and have a cat like perch of the awesomeness of UT coeds and Austin. The best part though is the music. Good hip hop and NOLA rap to bounce to. Any place that plays Cash Money Millionaires is money in my book. read more

Oh Maggie Mae's. You disgusting beast. I don't mean to always end up here, but I do. Maybe it's because I know one of the bartenders or because my friends bands seem to play here. Maybe it's because I ALWAYS run into friends I know. It's loud, it's dirty, it's crowded. But you know what, it's 6th street so get over it. It's one of the only bars with a patio that looks out onto 6th. It's got SEVERAL areas. Three bars upstairs and a couple down stairs too. Several bathrooms. Usually someone DJ-ing upstairs and they play some sort of video mix that I always crack up at. I like dive bars. I hate 6th street. But if you are going to be down here in all of those type of bars, I think the Maggie Mae's is alright. read more

*3.5 stars This was one of the bars that played more "club" music on 6th street. The DJ was spinning an excellent selection of Hip Hop on the roof top, but every now and then an unknown or weird song would get in the mix (IMO.) Loved the loud, bumpin' music, the high energy of the crowd and the bright lights. Towards the front end of the patio that over looked the street, things were a little calmer, however the areas around the bar were always crowded. It took a little bit to get a drink at some points and the bartenders didn't really seem to care. They were always courteous when ordering and making your drink, though :) Downstairs, the energy is a little bit lower - there is a live band playing on the first floor and another bar. Walking down 6th St at 7:30pm on a Saturday night there wasn't a lot jumping off, and we weren't sure where to go. We chose Maggie Mae's for the covered upstairs bar/patio. Turns out there is a full stage set up there, but the bar wasn't open yet so we came back downstairs. By the time we ordered a drink and got a bar stool by the window, the blues band started up...and we knew we'd found a great spot! I honestly have only been in here about four times in the last two years, usually it was only to rescue someone who was stuck here or wanted to get away from a crazy date. The drinks here are poured well and the bartenders are fairly friendly. The music in the main bar is usually pretty good, as for the downstairs courtyard, well that can be hit or miss. There is frequently a pretty decent crowd here, a little older than the rest of 6th Street but just as drunk and crazy. They also have a lot of special events and every now and then you can catch some pretty big shows here. They do have the upstairs bars and patios overlooking the street so that is a huge bonus. Overall, it is just an average bar on 6th Street, nothing really exciting. I am usually pretty bored when I come in here, best to just grab a drink and go. read more

Awesome bar! Caleb the sweetest door guy ever convinced us to come in, actually bought us a round! My parents and I were in town and had the best experience of our trip here. We walked up the stairs to the rooftop and Jeff Matthews came over and started talking to us. He is the sound and production guy for the bar and invited us to the les Paul room (their green room) for a tour. We stood and chatted with him for a good long while! My favorite bar on Sixth. And I'm not talking about the whole patio or whatever other rooms are there. There is a small bar on the side with a long old wooden bar and very few stools, its all carved up and decrepit. This is the only place you need to be concerned with. I didnt venture into the other rooms and probably wouldnt. Seemed like it could be pretty douchy. You may find a rather large, cordial gentleman bartending. His name is Brian. If you see him, order up a shot of Hideous. He will make you some awesome drinks that are fairly priced and have you laughing your ass off in no time. You wont find as many frat boys in here as the rest of Sixth, they wont be able to hang. What you will find is a good, mixed and friendly crowd of people from all walks of life looking to get drunk. Brian is pretty much the best bartender ever. I feel just as at home as I would at any bar on U Street or in Dupont Circle in DC that I frequented for years. Clientele is decent. Our tastes tend to run toward more divey and/or woodsy bars in the evenings, but if you're having a casual day, it's a great spot to watch the time and the people go by. On New Years Eve me and my buddy were on the ground floor standing by the stairs when the security guy came barreling down the stairs screaming at the top of his lungs to get away from the stairs. My buddy and I walked out of the way as the security guy continued to scream at everyone in the area until I said "wow this guy." He continued to push me from behind towards the exit as hard as he could and when I said that I was leaving he still continued to try to throw me out. He then did the same thing with my friend who had done nothing out of line. You could tell the guy had an inferiority complex and really wanted to flex on everybody. The patio on the rooftop keeps bringing me back. Dancing your heart out on a clear Austin night will make you a happy camper. Good music, for the most part on the upstairs deck. The first floor usually has a live band to keep up with the Austin scene. Their prices are a bit high in comparison to the surrounding bars, but that deck...I tell ya...that deck...
