I've been coming here since my first SXSW in March 2010 while i still lived in NYC and i continue coming here all the time, like tonight when I saw Big Freedia for my 4th time here and 7th time total. While I don't like the venue as much these days since the staff downstairs is overly aggressive if you aren't "within the lines", it's still a great place to catch bands in a tiny outdoor venue (just don't drink so much that you fight back like I saw someone do tonight). Tonight was a lot of fun but that one staffer kept pushing people back out of the walkway if they didn't listen after the first time he asked them. Unnecessary. Luckily they don't do that on nights when it's less crowded, but honestly they should never be putting their hands on patrons. As far as food...i think they have a hot dog thing on July 4th weekend and a pancake party during SXSW but otherwise you won't get food here. But they have in and outs if you are over 21 . And the beer prices aren't horrible if you're here on a night with a good band. They are high though any other night for just hanging out (and you should drink elsewhere). read more

Service was good at the bars, had no issues. Being able to see the actual concert was the part that has me unsure that I would return here. The different levels really doesn't add much viewing unless you are able to get right up against the railing. If you leave your post there will be people behind you waiting to snag your spot quickly. There's also smaller indoor listening rooms/bars on both floors. The bars are staffed by some of the best bartenders in town and supplied with a beverage for every taste. I've attended private events, SXSW shows, and touring band concerts at Mohawk over the years and I've always had a good time. For newcomers, here are a few tips to make your visit more comfortable: - Doors typically open at 7p, music starts at 8p and goes to 10:30p-1a (depending on day of the week and our local noise curfew). This may vary for special and private events. Superfans will be in line at least 15 minutes before doors to assure a favored standing position. - It's hot! Forget about being stylish. Wear comfy shoes for standing, stair-climbing, & moshing on concrete in 85+ degree temps. Coolers of free self-serve cold water are available on the bars. Use them & stay safe. - There are 2 ways to get in. 1st floor doors on Red River and 3rd floor door on 10th. YMMV, but I prefer the smaller door on 10th. The entry line is usually shorter and it's almost always shaded. - Best viewing depends on your personal preference. Wanna mix it up right in front of the stage? Make your way to the 1st floor, but be ready to sweat, as airflow is nil down there. Wanna see the stage without obstruction? Post up at the rail on the 2nd or 3rd level terrace, and have a shelf for your drink, too. We went in for a Tuesday night show and it was not busy at all. The beers are pretty good, not sure about other bevs yet. They have inside and outside stages, I would like to comeback at some point to see what the outside is like when the entire place is open on busier a night, considering they have a rooftop seating as well. You can leave and come back if you're over 21 and have a stamp on your hands. You can bring food in but no drinks (even sodas and waters). They WILL check your bag. The sound quality during the show was weird: electronic back track was louder than live instruments and vocals, but it could also be artists' choice. read more

My experience at the Mohawk was not great because the show I wanted to attend was much later than listed. I went to see The Dandy Warhols which was billed to start at 7 but instead didn't start until about 1030pm. I expected one or two bands to play before them, thinking they'd come on around 830, 9, or even 930, but 1030 was a bit ridiculous. Needless to say I had to wait around until then. Could Mohawk not do a better job of broadcasting and updating show times? There's this thing called the Internet, texting, email...which I think I gave them to receive updates. read more

We came here on Friday night for a show by Los Amigos Invisibles. Originally, they were slated to start at 9pm but eventually delayed to a 10pm start. This worked out in our favor, since we were late leaving from the previous venue. There was a small line when we got there slightly after 9:30pm but it moved fast. This was my first time experiencing a slice of Austin's live music scene & I left with a positive impression. This is such a unique venue, I'd never seen anything like it: an amphitheater vibe but also still bar-y if that makes sense. Very different from Nashville for sure! Folks were nice when traveling between viewing levels even though it was crowded. It didn't get too hot. Some patrons could probably be nicer to short people like myself and let us go in front. One man was taking up two spots & wouldn't budge. I eventually got a spot behind some middle aged Venezuelan men, and one was trying to flirt & not respecting my disinterest. The line for the bar appeared to be very long, so that's the only other practical con. The music was good, vibes were high, and now Los Amigos Invisibles have themselves a new fan! read more

Mo' hawkin'! This is a big live music venue located right off sixth street on Red River. This place is BIG. Once you enter through the front, you have a choice- live music venue to the left, or live music venue to the right. To the left, it's a big outdoor stage, with levels and levels of viewing room, so everyone can get a good look. Keep crawlin up those stairs to the top, and there's an extra bar back there, where there's never a line. The other bar is much more intimate, and cooler, since it's inside. The center area is a large bar with lots of insta-suitable views. Say hi to the stuffed bear. The bar is kind of a mix of eclectic industrial rusted metal outside to velvet and stuffed bears inside. There's always an impressive lineup playing here. If you're looking for a great place to get some live music in the Live Music Capitol of the World, this is it. read more

What a garbage venue. Poor selection of drinks, sound system sounded horrible, and it's basically impossible to see the stage. It's such a small venue that unless you have a spot in the small outdoor floor space you can't see the stage at all. If there's even two people deep at any of the balcony viewing areas you can't see the stage. It's not worth spending money to "see" a band there, and you can buy better sound equipment to have at your house for the cost of the tickets. Big waste of time and money and I will never go there again. Sadly, places like this will continue to exist because that's just where some bands have to play, and unknowing patrons will buy tickets. read more

It complimented the artists (Shakey Graves and openers) very well and had such a great layout of stage standing, overhang viewing and standing layered viewing (similar to a baseball stadium beer garden). Location: 4/5 lots of street parking, at the heart of austin Venue: 4/5 outdoor tiered-levels music venue which was unlike I've ever been to before. we had beautiful weather and the night was perfect. standard bar drinks. I did not drink and they had some non alcoholic bevs. Acoustics: 2/5 the stage is quite intimate. I wish the height of the stage was just a few feet taller to really see the artists/performers. The sound here is subpar as well. The bass doesn't drop well, the trebles are a good try. Vibe: 5/5 the crowd really showed up on a thursday night! My friends tell me Mohawk is one of the last remnants of old Austin. This is a great place to see a rock show. A full crowd will literally envelop the performers on the outside stage, which seats around 900. You'll have to arrive early if you want a seat on the bleachers on top of the building. Otherwise you'll have to squeeze in with a bunch of new friends on the patio or the upper stage left walk way. Sound and lights are world class. The bar with the diverse beer and spirits selection is inside, but the outside bar has Lone Star, which hits the spot. read more

It has been awhile since we have come here, we used to come for ACW, an indie wrestling show, but stopped coming awhile back at first due to Covid then just never got back and now ACW is no more. Not the original at the Mohawk anyway. This trip was due due to Quesooff which we have been trying to get to for years and never quite pulled it off. Sometimes it was life, others was due to it being outdoors with hot queso in Summer in Texas. No thanks. Still it is pretty much how I remember it, though with more bars. During wrestling since the top floors were recording booths and wrestler areas they didn't open the extra bars but cool to see every level has a bar. They had water everywhere and while it was a bit wet it didn't seem to deter anyone. They had tons of cool and unique queso's ranging from major restaurants like One Taco to food trucks to a company that makes their queso only for private events, to one guy who just joined up literally "perfected" his recipe the night before. That was cool to see all the types involved. The bartenders and staff are great and until it gets super crowded the space feels open and flowing. I hope we get back to this someday. read more

I came here with a friend to see a show. The venue has indoor and outdoor areas for bands. The bar has a variety of different drinks. I had one or two margaritas before switching over to Tito's and soda. My friend stuck with draft beer all night. The venue is also located near other bars so after you're done with the show, you always can go someplace else if you like. There's a couple places to eat around the area, which was appreciated. read more

I like this outdoor venue for a few reasons: - There's an upper balcony level that makes it easier to see from far away - The balcony has a railing that you can lean against if you're early, and it's white a lot of railing so many people have the option of leaning - The bathrooms and merch table are easy to find and get to - It's big enough to host good bands but not so large that you wonder what the point in showing up was when you're 1000ft from the stage - While it's outdoor, there is a bit of cover in the back if it's raining or too sunny read more

The Mohawk has been around a long time. I remember seeing Buzzcocks there in2010 and it was great but I hadn't been back in several years. After moving away from Austin and coming back life got hectic so I decided to force my husband to make time to go enjoy the things we love namely live shows. I been to The Mohawk a few times this year and it's still an amazing place to check out live shows and it's a very people friendly place for ALL. Bartenders are nice, drinks are good, shows outside are amazing as ever and the crowd is as eclectic as Austin is. I've already got tix to 3 upcoming shows and with so much changing in Austin I'm so thankful The Mohawk is still around and hopefully stays around for a long time. Long live Red River!!! A tip: if you want a good view get here early this place really can fill up as you can see in the pics, but that's no problem just come early and enjoy a few drinks before the show starts. read more

My favorite venue in Austin, and somehow I never reviewed it. I don't know what it is about this place that I like, but it just seems setup really well. Saw my favorite band (RIP) Yeasayer there a couple July 4th's ago and there wasn't a bad spot in the house. Watched a bit from the back, then got up front by the stage, and took some awesome photos from the area above stage left. Staff has always been nice here and their drink prices aren't crazy. There's also another stage behind the bar where I saw a friend's band play, but it wasn't as easy to see the band play as outside. read more

This venue is awesome! There are two stages, one inside & one outside, with plenty of room. The inside stage is very small but great for intimate concerts. The patio for the outside stage is honestly my favorite in Austin. The view is amazing & there's so much space! Bartenders were kind & efficient, and the drinks weren't crazy over priced. 5/5 stars, I look forward to coming back to this venue! read more

Mohawk is close to most hotels downtown. The staff is nice and helpful. However, I noticed the show I went to see was over sold. People were packed together, and there wasn't enough room for everyone to see the show. I thought this was a fire safety issue and decided to leave thirty minutes into the show. Nice place to grab a beer, but it's not worth the price of a concert ticket. read more

Gotta say, the evening was a complete disappointment and waste of money. Mohawk does not have visual access for everyone there. If you're not the first few hundred in the door, then you're basically at a listening party, not a concert. $250 to be behind a literal wall or a wall of people. Had we not listened to the club guy outside directing people to a "shorter line" around the corner, we would have been able to have a visual spot. Instead, we listened to him and found ourselves in a line 2x as long that moved at a snails pace. Our fault for listening to him. Jack White's fault for picking a subpar venue for his fans. I'm a school teacher her 3 times vaccinated. Working understaffed overtime for the same pay. Went to a show not aware of the vaccination requirement. Im 3 times vaccinated. My job prevents crime and is the first line in defense of child pedophilia or abuse. Lost $80 and got nothing but rude and condescending comments from both staff and police. All to see a punk band. Listen this is just one of those places you go to for good music. Period. It's an institution. A must-go. I like the atmosphere and the set up. Some people complain about the service and staff. Look it's a venue. Get in do what you need to, watch the band and move on. I've had no bad experiences here. It is what you make it. Can't say enough good things about this place. I've seen 4 shows at the Mohawk and the bartenders/staff only get better. There was one time I did wait about 10 minutes for a beer, but take into consideration the outside stage was sold out, and so was the inside stage. Great Austin music staple! I love seeing shows at the Mohawk. Yeah, it can be a little grungy and it's mostly outdoors but it's a solid place to check out some music. When it comes to shows featuring bands who are popular but "not quite mainstream" yet, Mohawk is the absolute perfect venue, and I'm including San Antonio's venues in this. What I love about Mohawk is that parking is actually NOT THAT BAD. It's nothing a quick walk can't get you to. There's a side entrance that takes you up to the top level, and the acoustics are great. Speaking of levels: that's my favorite thing about Mohawk. Every spot is a good spot due to the tiered venue. Even on the top level, there's a set of risers for additional height. Thank you for caring about short people! My first time at Mohawk was in April 2017 when I saw the Allah-Las. Tonight I saw The Growlers since they've outgrown Paper Tiger in San Antonio, and they were fantastic. I had an excellent time tonight.
