Got to appreciate Austin's title of "Live Music Capital of the World" here! Came here for a Beach Fossils concert, and had a nice time with friends. It's a sweet space with the multiple levels and balconies and you can feel the evening/night breeze. Getting into Mohawk was quick since there's plenty of (paid depending on the night) street parking close by. They also have free water coolers at the bars. Be careful if you stand close to a speaker though, sometimes the speakers would squeal and my ears were definitely dying by the end of the night. read more

Venue is cool. Sound was sub par but not terrible. Staff was standoffish at the door with my group at first for no reason at all, but then lightened up once we didn't feed their negative trip. I watched a few staff accommodate a couple people, but another couple staff members were inconsiderate of the peeps around them and were so rude. This part had nothing to do with us, but we witnessed it. They acted unprofessional and are allowed to act like a entitled children with no care for the customers that are helping pay their wages. Good venue but thr restrooms are terrible. All in the name of "gender neutral" "Sit" and "Stand" signs to distinguish toilets or urinals. So basically men have 2 bathrooms. I had 3 men walk in front of me so assuming they were going in to take a crap next me. I refused to go in. That's terrible. Nothing gender neutral of the "Stand" restroom. We were outside and it was a little hot. Definitely needed some fans. I believe there is also an inside space, but our event was outside. They do other trivia nights there which is always a lot of fun. I will definitely be back to the Mohawk.....especially since I won a $10 bar tab!!! read more

The sound quality at Mohawk is a thing of beauty...fantastic!! That could be end of story, and it would *still* warrant 4 stars, because music. Really, though - when you're taking the initiative to get out and support live music, what other factor is more critical then the sound?? Mohawk nails it. But wait there's more! Mohawk has a pretty cool beer selection for a venue - featuring Real Ale Fireman's 4, various Austin Beerworks brews, and a good chunk of the Austin EastCiders lineup (mix one with an available Guinness stovepipe for a flavored snakebite!!) - at reasonable prices. And if you remember that there's fairly decent beer here and don't eff around in Rainey St pubs for too long before the show, and get to Mohawk at least some time relatively close to doors, you'll get a spot with a great line of sight in addition to the glorious sound. My favorite spot is on the "top floor" of the multi-level venue... There's a structure of wooden bleachers that allows even us shorties to have a great view of the bands. (ProTip: walk right on past the people lined up on RedRiver to enter Mohawk, round the corner on 10th, and enter through the side door there. Takes ya right up to the top level, with little if any line/wait) Best of all...Mohawk don't give a single frig about the weather. LOVE! I just stood out in a torrential downpour watching an awesome band slay their set for 2.5 hours and it. was. awesome. !! A neighboring venue had shut down, for FAR less intense weather, a band i'd paid quite a lot to see, before their set had even gotten off the ground - bummer!! - and I was expecting the same from Mohawk. It's an amphitheater in the middle of the city so there's banging music and skyscrapers right behind it it's awesome. One thing that was kind of a bummer was that I wasn't 21 and if I left I couldn't come back and there was no food. That kinda made me sad. I got to see my favorite band tho. This place is a weird haven for really gorgeous overly bearded tattooed men. Their faces are beautiful... their earning potential limited... and yet, it's nice just to stare and marvel. Its a seriously cool spot with lots of great music and an incredible amount of people watching. And it's roomy like you wouldn't believe. From their outside stage which rocked all the SX bands, the upstairs concrete patio overlooking club deville, the "grizzly bear room" with its funky furniture, green walls and bathroom that spells like rotting sewage to the super hilarious graffiti. It's can be hot as hell inside and the drinks aren't especially cheap but they do a great job of being the reason people flock to Austin in mustached droves to worship at the feet of the live music capital of the world read more

First visit last night. I was afraid to go since there was a shooting the night before on that street and they hadn't caught the guy. I bought tickets two months ago and had been asking where to park and there's nothing close so I went RideAustin for the first time. Cost $50 but felt safe not having to walk alone for several blocks. Venue itself is pretty amazing. Outside stage felt close even on top tier but was too far to get a good photo. The sound system is amazing. Kudos. Nice selection of draft beer and plenty of water which was absolutely required. It was hot but nice breeze and shade up top. Miserable on floor. My back won't let me stand for hours on concrete so it was screaming by the end of two bands. So sweaty I couldn't find a dry spot on my clothes. Really friendly crowd and great show. This place is like magic. Seriously, I felt like I was on a movie set. It's a wide-open music venue with twists, turns, nooks, crannies, and levels for all the eye to see. After walking in a garage door-sized entryway, cut right to head to the bar/inside stage area and talk shop or cut left to go outside and stare at the big-ass outside stage (which would look much smaller in an enclosed space). Walk up the natural steps to stand atop said stage and gaze out at the limestone walls, streets below or people bopping to whatever music is being played at the aforementioned stage. Across from the "I'm-the-king-of-the-world" view, is the Green Room/private room/freaky freaky room. For real, for real...it harkened to the secret lair of a James Bond villain (complete with freaky freaky femme fatales). I like. It's as though someone created a concert venue in a cave, combined it with the space of a field party, set it in the middle of a city and added a vip bonus area to make it even cooler. I would be way to a.d.d. to concentrate solely on a show here. I'd want to explore like I was Encyclopedia Brown and Bugs Meany had just pulled off a heist. Or, maybe I'd just be that nosy-ass Harriet the Spy. In any event, there so much more to do here than drink and listen to music. Thar be a world of wonder to discover. Explore...but don't do so on a dead night, cuz they will shut the place down and throw your ass out whether or not you just bought a beer. read more

Here's the thing that you learn about the Mohawk over time: there are a myriad happenings here, and it stands to reason that any given one of them may be wrought with a certain amount of interesting and musical shenanigans: for our part, tonight we caught a set intentionally purposed by and up and coming act and a supposedly secret but ultimately poorly held secret set by another act. They were both fun, both accessible, and definitely featured a wide variety of folks who make these sort of things happen. If you were the kid growing up who liked to move the magician's cape, you would appreciate opportunities to be in the know. Even so, it's the little things that make these trips to see bands and drink giant Lone Stars and smile insider smiles with your friends -- the kind of smiles that signify you'll all be thrusting your arms skyward in celebration afterward -- easier to swallow. It's a room that knows what it is, and they're aging well. And here's looking forward to an upcoming iteration. read more

The Mohawk is my home club in Austin. This does not mean there are not amazing gigs at many other places all over town. Austin is amazing in the amount of incredible innovative bands that play every night in every genre you can think of. But if I don't recognize anyone who is playing any of the clubs - and I am going to pick blind - I do better at the Mohawk than I do with any other shot in the dark. They mostly program alt, with an occasional run on electronica. At any club, if you are picking blind, you have only a one in four shot that the band you are hearing is any good. Multiple bands on the bill (the Mohawk generally programs two to four a night) increases your chances of getting lucky. When you win the lottery at the Mohawk you win bigger than you do at most other clubs. The best bands of the lot are unbelievably innovative from a composition standpoint. The players are total masters of their instruments. New sounds, new formats, new ideas about what can be done with a song ... You are more likely to get that at the Mohawk than you will at other places. Now Yelp is mostly about restaurant reviewing ... and the Mohawk is a bar as well as a music venue. How is it as a bar? Not too shabby. They are not the mixmasters of the century. They have mixed drinks but a lot of them are questionable. But they compensate with a fine fine collection of interesting bottles. Great ryes. Great scotches. Great bourbons. The Mohawk is not at the level of say a Bar 2211 which is the best whiskey establishment I have found in town. But there is always something new and interesting to put in your glass to occupy your attention. Which is just as well for nursing yourself through the three loser bands that it is your bad luck to hear, before the Genius of the Century gets up on stage and expands the universe of what can be done with electric guitars. read more

Austin is indeed the musical capital of world! On any given night within a block's radius you might have Slayer or Snoop Dog playing a few clubs away from each other. And even sometimes, I have seen it before, both bands might be on the same bill! However, is it me or is it just of late that the energy that made the Red River a vital part of its city seem, well a bit lacking? There used to be a club called, "Room 710" that I felt embodied the free and independent spirit of that strip of street. But wait, there is a really cool venue called The Mohawk that has seemed to fill that void. It is on a street corner and hangs above other spots, such as the Red Eyed Fly. I don't know why but I was envisioning the place to be bigger, just on the basis of the top national acts that play there. But it is not too big, or not too small. The door people here are really friendly! I have gone to other places here and the door person is typically in a band, and they tend to act cocky or arrogant. Remember, the first impression a person makes is right at the moment we step in front of your door. When you get there you will notice two playing areas, one inside and the other outdoors. There are a set of stairs that leads you both ways. Be mindful, as both these areas see great traffic, with concertgoers and scenesters alike. What I like about both areas is that anywhere you stand you are always near the music. I have to admit, the sound system here is flawless. On this night, that was humid as hell, you could hear the metal band performing quite clearly! And loudly as well! Top that off with some greasy beards carrying Lonestars(the drinks are not cheap here.) and you have the makings for an interesting experience. In addition the stage is set low so you can see the band up close and personal, which creates and intimacy between the audience and the band. Another major selling point of this place besides the music, is the food option. On top of the second stairwell, I believe, there is a chef that cooks vegetarian cuisine. I had a portion of sweet potato fries and spring rolls for 6 bucks! It was quite delicious, fresh and hot! Typically when I go to shows I am accustomed to the same food fare of taco trucks or the dude that sells pizzas for 5 bucks. It was refreshing to see this option being offered even in the midst of tattooed, headbanging, dread locked and nose~pierced folk that probably dine at Stubb's. But then again Austin never ceases to amaze me. It is a quirky place filled with many contradictions and surprises. I really like the Mohawk. It has a cool laid back vibe. The door people are friendly. The drinks are kinda pricey but the sound and layout of the venue compensate for this. Sure it is a bit hot and sweaty here, considering it is summer but who said rock and roll was meant to be pretty! Now I just got to work on my Metal Horns! I visited post-corona, it was actually raining for the opening act but luckily it cleared up before the main event. I really liked the tiered viewing, if you want to close to the stage you can but if you want to see well and have a little more room it's easy to go up the tiers. There were 3 bars open that night, your tab follows you around so no worries about that. I ubered there, I'm not certain about parking in the area. I can't even begin to tell everyone how I pretty much love Mohawk like a BFF and how this is probably the best overall venue in the city of Austin. First of all, live shows. They have lots of them. And they are pretty much all amazing. Sure, most of the bands are "indie" but bands like the Melvins, Circa Survive and even Nah Dude play there. Also, there isn't a bad seat in the house. Sure, it's pretty much all standing room, but you can stand pretty much anywhere, including the 2nd story when it isn't just VIP. Secondly, the bar staff rocks. Actually, all the staff is pretty much amazing. They remember your drink orders. They are always calm, happy and nice. They like making crazy drinks. Oh, and they love whiskey! Finally, the drink selection is choice and theme nights are awesome. There is usually a cider on tap. Want a hot toddy? They can whip it up. Maybe even in June. The theme nights vary from mustache happy hours to bike night with free live music. They even let you ride your Harley right inside the outside stage area. Rad/ Overall, A+. I went to The Mohawk once before on like a Tuesday @ 5:30PM & it was pretty dead. I thought , ehh... this place is okay but I like Club deVille more & took off. Last Sunday when I went to go see Ice Cube it was off the hook!!!! I met my friend Lisa up there & we got through will call quickly. Now first things first: I found the bathroom conveniently located then went to the bar. Now I dunno about you but I'm a baller on a budget. I go for the more bang for my buck. Lone Stars & PBR were $2 & 32oz Miller High Life's were $5. I got the 32ozer's (of course) for Lisa & I as well as a couple of Jager Bombs. The bartender poured them faster than I could get my wallet out. Cheers!!!! Now time for the show:) We walked out the door to the outside venue & the stage was about 20yrs away. What was cool is that floor slightly tilts downward. So if your in the back of the crowd you can still see it pretty well. I'm close to 6ft & had no problems with someone in front of me. As I looked around I noticed a couple of stairwells going up towards a upper patio that warped around the floor. It was pretty cool. Up on the patio there were bars up there as well as plenty of places to sit. (but why sit? Come on your at Ice Cube!!!!) I continued to wander the club and I think I discovered a secret bathroom. (Sweet!!) I went back downstairs & found my friends & proceeded to rock tha house, ring tha bell, rock out or what ever you want to call it. I was pretty impressed with the sound system. I could hear everything perfectly & there was no distortion. The place was outdoors & I only saw one bouncer in the crow so you were pretty well free to smoke what ever you wanted. & we did ;-} The show was awesome (cool lights & sound) & if ya left to go pee or to the bar you were usually back in you spot in about 5 or 6 minutes. Perfect!!! After the show we stuck around & got our picture taken by a photographer (see my pics) who took you picture & placed it in a funny background. It was he had different ones & different prices ($10 - $20) but what the hell??? We were having fun. Just a few odds & ins.... they start shows there early & end them early. Theres a sound ordinance in that area of Red River & it prevents clubs to get to loud and/or play late into the night. (I know stupid law. Why build a condo next to a lot of music venues in The Live Capital of the World. Not Keeping It Weird there) The TV was also not working so I wasn't able to get updates on the Cowboys game. (& everyone was asking me if I knew the score). All in all it was a blast. Cheap drinks & a great experience. I recommend this place if your favorite band is gonna play there. read more

So I attended the ghostemane concert tonight and they totally disrespected, and scammed, not only the performers but the customers. When it came to the performers they just said "oh well that sucks" when the sound sounded terrible for Horus the Astroneer and he got upset like any other performer would and Mohawk lashed out. They cancelled the main act, Ghostemane, which everyone was there to see. People like me, 2 hours away from Austin and more, came to see ghostemane and they totally disregarded the customers situations. And also, cussed out the customers and acted totally unprofessional. Also, we may not get our refunds because the venue wants to act petty. Totally do not recommend this venue. read more

Been here more than a few times. The door guys are kind and the acoustics inside and outside are great. That being said, the bartenders are not in the right profession. Every single time without fail I have encountered a rude, impatient, and demanding bartender upon ordering a drink. Doesn't matter if its a local artist with a few people or a sold out show, they're still not happy to be there nor serve drinks. During SXSW it was particularly awful when they snapped at virtually everyone in their establishment who dared order a drink at the showcases. Maybe time for a sit down conversation with their staff and remind them that the people coming to the shows are not the enemy. read more

Hands down, this is my favorite venue in Austin. All of my personal experiences with the staff have been nothing short of stellar. They've always been friendly to me. They've even taken care of me after fainting and let me into a sold out show for free for singing loud enough and for a long enough period of time outside of the venue. The booking here is always great, there are always great bands playing at this venue. The sound indoors and outdoors is consistently awesome (I was especially impressed with whoever dealt with the high demands of infamously deafening Swans in 2016 on the Glowing Man tour, I've seen them at a different venue before and the sound person there couldn't compare). I recommend catching a show here mostly because there's usually great energy in the crowd at this place. This place is really well-suited for the artists and crowd being able to establish a relationship with each other during a performance, and that makes all the difference in the world for the live music experience. read more

When the staff/club owner starts off by being rude it starts the whole thing off wrong. If you don't have something nice to say, keep it to yourself. I have been to every iteration of this place for many years and this one represents most of what is wrong with clubs/bars in Austin. Mohawk is hands down the best venue I've been to here in Austin. The atmosphere is great, no bad vibes. Even though it's small, there's tons of options of where to stand so you're never too far from the stage. Depending on your interpretation, there's either 2.5 or 3 levels of standing room. It means you get lots of opportunities to get rail and a great view of the stage. There's also quite a bit of the standing areas that are covered, in case it's raining. This place also tends to have more bands that I like than other venues, so I might be a bit biased in that respect. read more

We watched a concert here. They should have cancelled the concert due to thunderstorms but didn't, so we had WAY too many people crammed under their leaky tin first story roof. There's no way this would have been fire-code safe. The bathrooms were scary, in disrepair, and they were passing germy toilet paper from person to person because apparently it couldn't go into the stalls themselves. There were so many people crammed into the tiny space that drunk kids were basically moshing to get their alcohol and then get back into the spot they were in before, elbowing and kicking their way through us. Not enjoyable AT ALL. This place would have been fine for a concert with a limit of like 80 fans but the greed of the owners to get to a few hundred made it absolutely intolerable. read more

Ok, technically I have only been to Mohawks once but it was overall a good experience. My guy loves wrestling so we came for the Anachary wrestling event this past weekend. It was a typical 100 degree ATX summer day and the event was held outside (since that was where the stage is). I was not particularly happy about this. But alas, the things we do for love. The venue inside was surprisingly clean. The bartenders and event coordinators were really helpful and kind. The drinks were about average, a 16 ounce Lonestar was $4, and they had free water available for anyone who wanted it. Overall, I was pleased with the staff and the venue. Although I was hesitant to come here after they bumped Sage Francis from their lineup when he came to Austin this summer. But I would go back for future events. read more

If you like being followed around and harassed by an insane employee while you're trying to enjoy a show, then this is the place for you. Came here for the first and last time this past weekend. Said employee kept telling me to move because I was "a fire hazard." No matter where I went, this employee kept following me, yelling in my ear, touching my arm, and telling me to move (I was not blocking any paths or exit ways/doors). He made me feel extremely uncomfortable. All I wanted to do was enjoy the show, but he would not stop harassing me during the final 20 minutes.
