Just like Hotel Vegas, I've never reviewed Volstead. Don't ask me why, sometimes I forget. Started coming here even before relocating to Texas (during bi-annual family visits). Volstead is connected to Hotel Vegas and the bar has some great prices if you want a beer or even a cocktail. Good & gritty spot for live music, deejays, and more. Same vibe as Hotel Vegas, pretty much. Back patio area is more spacious if you need breathing room from the indoor crowd. Service is always spot on. read more

Volstead Lounge is the entry way for Hotel Vegas. This where identification cards are checked, i.e. carded. If you make it pass being carded, you're in! It is interesting that the Volstead Lounge has a different name than Hotel Vegas. If you were drinking, I can see how you could be completely turned around. The outside signage states Hotel Vegas and as you walk through the door, you then see Volstead Lounge signage. It is basically a lounge area with a bar. There is a lounge hour to sit in while chatting. You could also drink at the bar. All in all, there was almost no one at Volstead lounge. The bartender was ready to make you a drink. We opted out drinking at Volstead Lounge. There was not much going in the lounge, so we into the next room, which was the start of Hotel Vegas. read more

Closed my tab after buying a single vodka soda. I asked for well vodka and somehow that single drink ended up being 20$. As someone who works in the service industry I instinctively tipped 20% and ended up spending 25$ not realizing I was being overcharged. Meanwhile the connected bar next door was offering actual cocktails for 6$. The bar was empty on a Friday night so maybe the bartender was trying to overcharge me to make more money. I'm starting to realize I'm just not an Eastside girly, as the Volstead Lounge/Hotel Vegas is supposedly THE place to go for vibes... but every time I go, I just want to... go... somewhere else. Volstead is connected to Hotel Vegas, which is also connected together by a patio. There's always tons to see, but the music here is more indie. Also, don't bother requesting songs if there's a DJ, there's a "No requests from the DJ" policy here. Drinks are your average drinks at a bar, nothing that is crafted here. read more

We came here on a Thursday night after purchasing tickets for the much hyped comedy show. There were about 6-7 groups of people in the audience, couples, friends and one couple with their parents. No one person there got a single laugh out from the evening after being out $20 per person (tickets, beers, tips, parking). I wish they put as much effort in vetting the performers as they did marketing the event. There were 4 comedians if I recall correctly and not one of them could get the audience laughing or even smiling or nodding. I respect how difficult this profession is but I think asking people to buy tickets, setting high expectations in ads, and then not being able to deliver is disappointing. If it was setup as some folks testing new jokes, it would be one thing. But to pitch them as seasoned professionals was a mistake. There were only 2 tables setup and 4 stools at the bar - 2 groups just stood the whole show. The MC dropped his beer on me while walking by and didn't even stop to apologize. The Vixens of Volstead brunch is a must-visit for fans of Volstead and the Vixens! The show was fantastic, and we loved the sandwich offered at the pop-up food stall. However, there are a few suggestions for improvement. While they're pushing the drinks, it would be great to have more nibbles available. After we all devoured the sandwich, it would have been nice to have other options. We understand the limitations of the makeshift stove but since we came thinking about "brunch" and thought we will have other things to nibble on while waiting for the performance to start. One thing to note is the timing. We arrived at 12 pm when the doors opened, but the show didn't start until around 1:40 pm. They advertised that show starts at 1pm. The first round of performances seemed to be focused mainly on gathering tips, but things picked up in the second + round/s, and it turned into a real show then! The dog-friendly show and venue are also fantastic additions, and I'll definitely be back, but next time, I'll know what to expect and come prepared! read more

Try Volstead Instead! This place is a dive hipster joint. Cheap Lone Star Beer tall boys, y'all! Going inside the place, it's dark, with a bar along one wall. A stage takes up a good portion of the interior, with loud LOUD music. Rock n' Roll! The bathrooms are just as rock n' roll- covered in bumper stickers and graffiti, they're completely shady. The bartenders were nice and fast with the beers. If the inside isn't to your liking, the Volstead has an excellent outdoors patio in the back, with lots of comfortable seating, shady areas, covered areas too! The back area connects with the Hotel Vegas, so they all kind of morph into one big bar especially during SXSW. read more

Love the area out back--multiple bars to keep drink lines short. Popped by here killing an hour before dinner around 7pm on a Thursday. They had a cool band playing, and then some other stage antics--very nice as I wasn't expecting free entertainment. Dog friendly and plenty of space to find a table for groups. Maybe I just lucked into a good night, but I enjoyed it. If the food truck, Bummer Burrito, is good and I have just as good a time and service as today my next visit, I'll edit my review to 5 stars...wait...Ill give 5 now and if things turn sour next time lower it to 4...can't imagine anything less. read more

I like that there's outside seating with shade - useful during these pandemic times. And the food is tasty - amazing chicken sandwiches! And the drinks are also delicious - I had the blackberry mule which I would not mind coming back often for. One of the bars I frequent partly because my boyfriend's friends DJ here (Joaquin and LZRCAT) My sad drink of choice (that I get 99% of the time) is a vodka sprite but it's always been consistently decent for the price. The bartenders are nice and attentive. Definitely biased but the music is always fun and I always have a good time! read more

Tuesday nights they've been having DJ Ulovei play on them patio lately. He's billed as "Latin Rock" and his selections (and fashion sense) have a distinct retro rockabilly flair. Two Stars cause I used to love this place Ive been coming here for almost two years but recently it seems like they've changed management because the service is awful. At the drag brunch which I havent gotten to go to since December I had to spend half the show in line at the bar! Seriously like half an hour for some poor chick to pour a frozen drink that I remember being amazing every time Ive been here, but it tasted awful! I ended up drinking water to spare myself the line again! The place was dead when we arrived, but as promised by my gal pal, once the DJ set started the place filled up and turned into an all night dance party. There's a mix of patrons, but it felt a bit younger and drunker as the night went on. By 10pm we were out if there. But the time we were there, the diverse selection of music (hip hop, cumbia, pop) kept things interesting. The drink menu features a few craft cocktails (the old fashion made with Wild Turkey was not tempting at all) but the frozen margs were a-ok. BEWARE of your MONEY Nice atmosphere and great music. But lousy ass robbing bartenders! This was the first bar of the night that my husband and I entered. I paid for a beer and I asked for an Irish trashcan. The bartender did not know how to make the Irish trashcan so he gave me a Long Island iced tea with sprite. I tried to inform him that that is not what the drink looks nor taste like. If you are unsure on how to make the drink just say you don't know! I remember how much that check was because that was the only thing I paid for the ENTIRE night. My check was $23.82 and I was NOT tipping for a beer and nasty drink that I left full to the brim at the bar. Thanks to Cash app I get notifications whenever there has been a change in a charge. So to the thief that is so unsure on how to make an Irish trashcan you owe me two dollars. I went to an event at Hotel Vegas last night and was hanging out on the patio. I had never been to either place, so I didn't realize the patio leads to Volstead. I went to close my tab, and the bartender (guy with blond spiky hair) was incredibly rude and hostile to me. It was so uncalled for. I'm sure it's a common mistake, to walk from one bar into the other and not realize they are separate. He didn't have to talk to me as if I was either the stupidest person in the world or completely shit-faced drunk. I will not be going to Volstead in the future. read more

First time checking out the Volstead Lounge over the weekend on Saturday 3/30/2019 and just wanted to share my thoughts on my experience. The DJ was awesome the night we went and kept playing songs that for sure made you want to shake something BUT the inside of Volstead Lounge isn't very big and was packed with soooo many freakin' people that there was no way you could dance without bumping into other people! I literally saw a fight almost start because of people bumping into each other so after seeing that we chose to leave because being confined to a small space w/ a whole bunch of people who have been drinking seemed like a disaster waiting to happen. Another thing that turned me off about Volstead is that the inside only has 1 women's restroom. There is an outside area that has tables to sit at & plays music but inside is where the action is at just too bad the inside isn't bigger. The "bartender girl" that serves outside will charge you $1.00 of convenience FEE if you order less than $10.00 hahaha... I ordered a white wine with a great/friendly bartender man inside and he charged me $7.00 with NO convenience fee. After I ordered the same white wine inside,apparently she switched places with the other bartender guy. When I asked her for my check she had charged me $8.00 for the wine + $1.00 of convenience fee... Letsss just say things didn't get pretty so she gave me my $2.00 back and she didn't get a TIP! read more

Oh volstead. You are the good, The bad, and the ugly. My nyc friend thought you were called Bullstud and I feel that's acceptable. I love/hate that you now have dance parties but right this minute, mostly love. And as I type this, my fairy fry mother just appeared out of no where and gifted us with some free fries so I owe someone a blood debt. Aaaaand thong song just came on. However any events that are advertised as having free shit are always a little shaky. I shouldn't say a little; anytime I see an event that's supposed to have free shit at a specific time, I know that you will have 2 of whatever free thing you're supposed to have and that it won't be available until 3 hours after the event invite says it will be, and then it will promptly run out in 7.5 minutes after becoming available. So now I just don't go to those events. Easy fix. But rookie freeloaders be warned. read more

This place is interesting because it has a back door to get into the outdoor part of the Volstead Lounge area (no line ever), but it's attached to Hotel Vegas which has long lines and cover charges in the front. The music inside Hotel Vegas is beyond awful filled with smelly and gross people. The outdoor area (Volstead) is better with lots of seating with but filled with cliquey and unfriendly millennial trash. One time (I swear to God) a few weeks ago everyone outside collectively was so trashed that people were bumping into tables, falling over, and fighting. I left. Bartenders are really nice but IDK, just get a weird semi carnival vibe from this place. At least they introduced me to White Claw. read more

A sweaty, underground feeling dance party on Friday night. Perfect to dance the stress away of the work week. Great drink prices ( Tie the bartender is awesome ), Dj plays anything from Biggie, to Cardi B, to Selena. On that note you only get 45 second clips of every song before it switches to the next, but you'll definitely get a price of the song you wanted to hear. What a great set up with the outdoor usage. The two bars were kool too. Drinks were priced farely. Having a 1 in 1 out system at 11pm when the venue isnt busy was kinda odd. The inside club scene was crap. This venue needs to fire there DJ they had on Saturday 10-12-19 night. It was a rookie at the wheel of the turn tables. The songs being played had zero beats, no transition between songs and the beats were completely off. This guy had no Idea what he was doing or how to mix and play for the crowd. And was asked to wait. Mind you I just finished using the restroom outside. I was able to wash my hands and when I was done i told "good for you" by Joanna this woman who is known for her bad customer service. Later. I was being told I had to leave. I left. I think we can all agree that we need something new on the scene considering we've all been crawlin' the same bars for the past year. We're all entirely too hip for that. Wink wink. Its in the ground floor of the Hotel Vegas and someone made this super hipster chic. I actually dig the minimal but totally LATFH decor. I should have stuck with beer instead of the overly sweet and sour margarita OR any one of their infused liquors (although they dont have a list). I heard tell of mint habanero gin and blue cheese vodka. Gross? Delicious? I'm gonna have to return to find out. The space outside is vast, with the big fat lights and branded boozy two tops. I think that they'll continue to improve as they folks get in there and it gets seasoned like a cast iron skillet. Coolest thing? They're making the space next door a live music venue. The Volstead is perfect for late night dancing. When you are on the east side doing east side shenanigan type stuff and it gets to be midnight or around that time ... walk on over to the volstead to end the night for sure! This is what we did on my bachelorette party and we had sooo much fun! It was the perfect way to end the night! Besides the dancing, they also have a great bar with some brilliant bartenders! They can make pretty much any cocktail you might want, shot or serve you your favorite beer. Their back patio area is super cool too and it connects to Hotel Vegas. A friend of mine was fortunate enough to nab her a very handsome Australian gentleman and is leaving the states to join him there (YELP TIP: Few things are sexier than an Australian man saying the word "Debauchery"). She chose Volstead as her going away joint. This was my first visit, but will not be my last. The staff are great, the patio is phenomenal. It's probably one of the better places I've been to on the east side in quite a while. They were playing tejano/salsa music in the main bar, which was fun. The burgers at the food truck. THE BURGERS. AT. THE FOOD TRUCK. Get them. Get them often. I very much look forward to my next visit. Noteworthy moment: this was my first time sampling an old fashioned cocktail called "The Hanky Panky" and if what I've read is correct, they're doing it right. I haven't had such a perfect cocktail in quite a while and for Volstead's extremely reasonable prices? It's definitely worth the trip. read more

Volstead is my new favorite bar on E. 6th. It's mostly because of the comfort I feel when I'm there. I used to be partial to the country/western bar down the street until they started charging cover on weekends, and there's two other bars I'm big fans of in the district, but Volstead takes the cake for ambiance/scene/great music/diverse set of people. Let's break it down: Hipster Factor (on a scale of 1 to Portland): 47. You will find a few, but there's really a great mix of people. I moved from Houston 11 years ago and this is a rare place that gives me the diverse feeling again. Not like West 6th that's overrun by douchenozzles, not like Rainey where you literally have to choose between the 30+ crowd, the racist crowd (if you go to Unbarlievable we will fight when I meet you), the douche crowd or the live music crowd (granted there's a couple places that are ok), and not like Dirty where I feel like Brad Pitt running through (underage or tourist) zombies in World War Z on a Saturday night. (Portland=infinity, btw) Dallas Factor (on a scale of 1 to The Domain): 1. This place is not The Domain, so it is not Dallas douche/yuppie/daddy's money factory. Everybody is pretty chill, nobody wearing blazers, casual/good-looking people chilling on the weekend. East Austin Factor (on a scale of Westlake to East Austin): Still East Austin. This place is still trying hard to keep it real. The hip-hop they play is usually from the era that East Austin was still largely hip-hop. The cumbias they play is also reminiscent of the times when East Austin was still largely cumbia. The free kickback event they host on Sunday nights is also pretty clutch, but I refuse to give you details because I swear if you put the 'T' word in an event the entire city shows up, take a breath y'all, there's enough flour and corn t______s in this town for us all. Cons: It does get hot and crowded inside (back patio is great though), and the drink prices are beat by a couple spots on East, but can't complain. Overall (on a scale of 'This place sucks let's leave NOW' to 'Another beer?'): You're almost certainly ordering a 2nd or 3rd drink here. Just a cool place where a diverse mix of people are minding their business with their friends and everyone always appears to be having a good time 60% of the time. Which ain't bad really. The most uncomfortable I've ever felt here is seeing white people try to dance cumbias like they learned at their 30-minute salsa lesson, but all in all if that's the most uncomfortable part of the night it's a pretty fun time. read more

Came here one night as my boyfriend seemed to like it. There is a food truck out back, which is awesome. However, also a lot of smokers (boo). It's the only spot you can really hang out and talk but the smoke eventually got to my fragile asthmatic lungs. Inside, it's dark and loud music plays. Really can't talk in there. I went here for my birthday and I was not satisfied in anyway. All the people that go their are not dressed up, they have sneakers and regular clothes. I had brand new suade heels I was not messing up. To get to the bathroom I had to go through the patio area. Inside it's so hot, it smells like hot piss and butt. They have one stall for women and no soap. The door opens up to the dance floor so everyone can see inside. The bathrooms have tissue everywhere and smeel so bad it was the worst place I've been too. A group of 15 of us were in Austin on vacation. We spent Friday on Dirty Sixth and Rainey and I low key kinda hated it. Then on Saturday we had dinner at Odd Duck (fantastic) and the waitress told me that the kind of people who eat at Odd Duck go dancing at Hotel Vegas. There was a cover band in Hotel Vegas so we went around the back to go dancing in their sister bar Volstead. Soooooo fun. I love that they have multiple areas so people with different vibes can hang in different areas. I was on the dance floor all night and couldn't get enough. Even when it was at capacity and you had to wait to get back in I still loved it. This music made time nonexistent (the Tito's probably helped). I made new friends. Lifesaver to have a food truck there too. 10/10 recommend for hipster types in their early 30s. read more
